Workflow for using Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite

I am considering purchasing Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite as I have noticed some unsatisfactory results in Compressor, even though I am generally impressed with Compressor and happy with the program and the options it gives, especially with exporting movie files for the web.
Right Now, if I want to export my timeline to MPEG2, I either export directly to Compressor, or I will export to a Quicktime movie file, not self-contained, and then import that into compressor. The latter of the two is certainly a faster method but I have noticed quite a few mixed opinions on these forums as to whether you lose quality or not with that method because video is being "recompressed"
Can anyone tell me the workflow when using Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite? Will there be an option in FCP to export directly to Sorenson Squeeze as you do with Compressor, or will I have to export a Quicktime reference file and then import that into Squeeze? I noticed a few posts on this forum suggesting that you have to export a self-contained quicktime file for Sorenson Squeeze. How can that be good, as you would definitely be compressing the image more than once?
Also, maybe this is a quesion for the DVDSP forum, but I was wondering what codec is used by DVDSP for encoding the menus. Does it use Compressor in the background? or something else? And if I am using Sorenson Squeeze, will DVDSP use Sorenson for encoding the menus, or will there even be an option to tell DVDSP to use Sorenson for encoding the menus?
thanks for any input advice anyone can offer.

thanks for that info. that is really good to know.
the only thing is the box that says recompress all frames is shaded unless I check the box that says make movie self-contained. so, does that mean anything? does that mean that it will only recompress frams if you make the movie self-contained? and will never recompress if you just export a reference file?
thanks.

  • Workflow for using proxies and AVCHD

I'm working on a 6 camera mulitcam project of a theatrical performance and I'm using Premiere CC.  The footage is all spanned AVCHD from Canon Vixia's.  My machine is pretty good but no way is it going to play 6 streams of AVCHD at once (I've done 4 and that was pushing it!).
I've done a little searching on the forum and found this post:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4877276#4877276
    In particular, Fuzzy says:
    The workaround is the following:
    - create a folder for your proxies next to the folder containing original footages and name it e.g. AVCHD.Proxies;
    - transcode your MTS files into MPEG2 ones with the same file names and MTS file extention (or run Batch Rename in Bridge after transcoding with MPG file extention);
    - close your PrPro project, created out of original MTS files;
    - temporarily rename AVCHD folder containing original MTS files to e.g. AVCHD.Sources and AVCHD.Proxies to AVCHD;
    - open up PrPro project and enjoy: all your original AVCHD files are now linked to MPEG2 proxies.
When you're done, reverse rename folders.
This idea appeals to me but I've got a question.  My files are all spanned AVCHD.  It seems, in his example, that each .mts has a corresponding mpeg2.  With my spanned clips, how will Premiere know how to put them together properly?  I don't really mind if there is a one frame drop between the mpeg2 clips but will this majorly screw things up when I swap the proxy footage out?
Is there a better way to do things now, one year on?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hmmmm... still having problems.
I got back to work this morning (having spent most of the weekend and yesterday raking leaves) to find that all of the mts have successfully been transcoded into mpg clips.  I added a new STREAM folder, moved the clips and changed the file extension to .mts.  So far so good.
I decided not to stitch the spanned mts clips first because I'm on a Mac and I haven't found a good (free) stitcher.  I have a nice Windows one that I like but i didn't have the time to move the clips to a Windows machine, stitch them and then move them back again.  This may still need to be done because I'm faced with a new problem.
When I go into Premiere and try to import the mpg clips (now hiding under the .mts extension) I get the error "The file has an unsupported compression type".  This happens if I use the regular import OR the Media Browser.
Any ideas?  I compressed these in AME using the default "Match Source - Medium Bitrate".  I used the H.264 format, not the MPEG2 format thinking that Macs like H.264 but I wonder if this is the problem
Thanks for everything, by the way.  You've been more than helpful

  • Best workflow for using iMovie as a long term home video storage

I want to store all my home videos in iMovie since it's organizes them well and integrates with Front Row and iLife.
As we know iMovie converts videos to AIC codec when importing which makes them insanely large. AIC is quick and good for editing but it makes no sense to store videos like that.
On the other hand H.264 codec is good for storing and playing videos. iMovie can work with H.264 .mov but it makes editing just a little slower.
    I suggest the following workflow:
    - Import videos from a camcorder.
    - Edit imported videos - remove junk, trim, etc.
    - Make iMovie project to produce nice movie for family (if needed).
    - Batch convert imported videos to H.264.
This will make iMovie library up to 80% smaller in size. And videos will still be available for playing and editing in iLife.
Can you suggest a better workflow?

    {quote:title=AppleMan1958 wrote:}I would not convert them to h.264, because if you re-use, you will have a generational data loss as your reconvert to AIC.{quote}
Are you sure I will have to reconvert to AIC? I tried putting H.264 encoded clips into events and iMovie seems to deal with them the same way. Just editing (selecting, scrubbing) is a little slower.
How do you suggest storing home footage?

  • Workflow for using photos in FCP?

I'm editing a sequence with 1920X1080 video (pro res) and a lot of photos. As you can see from my specs, I have plenty of RAM. However, a few minutes into my sequence I'm getting a "preparing video for display" message (I am monitoring on my desktop, not externally) every time I move anything. Is there anyway to stop this from happening? Do i have to do something to prepare the images for FCP? I am using JPEGS and the frame size is 5184X3456. Thanks for the help.

The biggest dimension size FCP can handle is 4K. Your photos are 5K. Size your photos to match the video. If you are zooming in on your photos then make them a little bigger than 1920X1080.
Also, make sure your photos are RBG not CMYK.

  • What is the workflow for using a Shure X2U USB preamp to record voiceovers in PP CS6.02 for Mac

Although I have managed to get the Shure X2U working with PP CS6.02, the trial and error method of selecting correct Audio Hardware and Audio Output Mapping is very haphazard and causes PP to crash almost every time. "Premiere Pro 6.0" appears in the Audio MIDI Setup program and I have the following selected:
    Built In Microphone    2 In
    Built In Input               2 In
    Built In Output            2 Out
Shure Digital              2 In        Drift ticked
Is there a method of being able to take audio level using the program meters before actual recording begins, or do I have to alter levels on the fly whilst recording the beginning voiceover to obtain the correct level?
    Using Intel i7 Macbook Pro

I haven't ever used Premiere to record VO's. However to address your volume question I have always adjusted volume after the recording is over with. I use windows and in windows I have always just used windows built in volume controls for line in. I usually try to record everything as loud as possible without having a bunch of background noise. Then in post I simply set the levels where I want them for whatever my edit purposes are at the time. I'm fairly sure that Mac's probably have some sort of line in volume control as well although you might need to look it up.

  • Need help with compression rates with Sorenson Squeeze 6, Compressor3.5.2

Hopefully somebody can help me with this...
I am running Sorenson Squeeze 6 on a Mac to try and compress some Apple ProRes 422 videos into an MPEG-2 file. The file will be played in a DirectX application, running on a PC with Windows 7. When being played it looks to be heavily compressed, and I need help with some of the compression settings.
Let me get more into detail...
So I have received a Quicktime .mov that has been encoded with FCP using Apple ProRes 422 compression at 720x486 , 29.97 fps, 40.29 Mbit/s , and the file size is 515.7mb.
So, this is the type of file I will have to compress into an MPEG-2, that will be playing on a...
1.6 GHz Intel Atom 330 Dual Core
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Graphics
    1Gb DDR2 800 Ram
    32Gb SATA Solid State Drive
    Windows 7 Home
Here is what I have done so far on my Mac using Sorenson Squeeze 6 :
I have brought the original file in and created some presets.
First off, I am encoding these MPEG-2 videos using an elementary stream type so I can mux the files using MPEG Streamclip...
Here is a screenshot of the settings I am using in Sorenson :
    - I have changed many of the data rate settings as low as 3000 Kbps, and as high as 15,000 Kbps, and the end result looks essentially the same
    - The audio isn't a problem, so I'm not going to address that.
    - I have used the crop/deinterlace filter and also not used the filter, and it makes a big difference, so obviously it needs to be deinterlaced.
From there I will get the .m2v file and the .m2a file, and then mux those with MPEG Streamclip.
So, I have done 8 different Pre-sets all with various settings playing primarily with the data rate, and the method from 2-pass vbr all the way to 1-pass cbr.
So again, my end result that is playing back on the windows 7 box (the specs that are listed above) looks to be heavily compressed and pixelation occurs.
    - I have also done the exact same with Apple's Compressor, and have gotten better results muxing while compressing, however the end result still tends to be the same, however the end result is much better. I have gone through 8 or so different compression export settings, and just overall still have the same issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • .flv files Exported from Sorenson Squeeze

    Hi There,
I'm trying to convert a QuickTime file to a .flv file using
Sorenson Squeeze (MAC platform) and my audio is popping when I
preview the squeezed file in SorensonFLVPlayer.
The audio does not pop in my QT file.
My settings for the compression are as follows:
    Codec: Fraunhofer MP3
    Data Rate: 64 Kbps
    Sample Size: 16
    Sample Rate: 44100
    Channels: Mono
I've tried changing them around and I get the same result.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix or work around this? I've
tried using no compression for the audio and it just outputs crazy
    static.
Is there a way in Flash that I can sync separate video and
audio files? Maybe I could export video only from Sorenson and
export audio from elsewhere and re-sync in Flash.
    Any help would be wonderful!
    Thanks!

I've had similar problems with Sorenson and I reverted to
    using the Flash 8
    encoder, which worked fine.

  • Sorenson Squeeze in CS5

I am about to move up to CS5 from CS3. With it I have been using Sorenson Squeeze 4.5 for my compression utility. Right now (or until next Thursday) sorenson is offering version 6.5 for a $200 upgrade fee, for me a savings of about $400.
Question is, tho, whether Squeeze is really necessary with CS5? Does the AME and other presets, etc, render Squeeze useless, or is it still worthwhile to use that package?
    Thanks,
    Bill Zens

Take this for what it's worth (heh--not much ), but here's my experience:
I purchased Squeeze 4.5 (or maybe it was 4.8?) for Flash back when I was running CS3. I was regularly delivering Flash video files, and wanted to use the VP6 codec--which CS3 had, but only with single-pass encoding. The quality was pretty iffy, so Squeeze was worth the money to get good looking Flash video encodes.
Around the release of CS4, Squeeze 5 came out; I paid to play. However, in CS4, we had multi-pass Flash encoding and the quality was pretty much on par with what Squeeze was outputting, so Squeeze started collecting dust.
Somewhere along the line, Sorenson launched Sorenson 360, their online video distribution and playback system, which integrated with Squeeze. There was also the ability to do client reviews, so I started using Squeeze again. There was the extra step of encoding an intermediate file, but the review system made up for that.
Then came CS5 and 64-bit goodness (plus a new computer ). Encoding to whatever was and is a lot faster than CS4 and Squeeze, but I still liked the review system. About that time, I got a great upgrade price (same deal that I think you're looking at) to go from the "Flash" version of Squeeze to the full version of the new Squeeze 6 with all supported encoding formats. Some of the new filters and options were nice, but I was finding Squeeze to be pretty slow (it's only 32-bit) and I had a lot of problems with stability with some formats and the inability to import others. One thing I have always HATE HATE HATED about Squeeze is that they included ffdshow in the install which is supposed to increase the format support. However, installing that is a big no-no on an edit system with Premiere...
That said, I still liked the 360 review service (I don't really use it for "hosting"), even if it wasn't perfect. I wasn't crazy about still having to export an intermediate file from Premiere to use in Squeeze--especially since I was having to resort to uncompressed AVIs and MOVs because anything else would bring Squeeze to a screeching halt--and there were a number of bugs that I'd discovered and submitted to the Sorenson folks. Surprisingly, many of these were addressed in Squeeze 6.5 (the current version).
But then things changed. Right about then, Adobe released CS Review for Premiere, and with that, the circle was (more or less) complete. No more intermediate files. No more slow encodes (from Squeeze, that is). No more crashing (with Squeeze, that is). Much better and more integrated review system. With some changes to the CS Review service (one of my requests has already come to life!), it will be the perfect solution and I will never have to use Squeeze again.
I really wanted to like Squeeze--as you can tell, I've given it more than a fair shake. However, I think it's turned into a big ball of bloat that is not very stable and really doesn't produce significantly better output than what I'm able to achieve with Premiere and AME. It's far slower, and the fact that I need to feed it a huge space-and-time-consuming intermediate file makes it not very user friendly. There is no communication between Premiere and Squeeze, so those intermediates will be a necessity until an exporter module is in place (which I'd say is never going to happen). And for me, the 360 review system is nowhere near as robust, well-designed, flexible, and integrated as CS Review is with Premiere.
Suffice to say, I will be giving no more of my money to Sorenson for what I feel is a subpar one-trick-pony. Do with that what you will

  • What is the workflow for creating templates in full FrameMaker and pushing them to XML Author?

    Hi All,
I'm working for a large organization (3000+) that is subdivided into 60+ business units.  I'm trying to figure out the workflow for using full FrameMaker to create a template that I can provide my business units to fill in via XML Author, send back to me, and then I can publish into a number of products using the Tech. Comm. Suite.  I am somewhat new to XML so I am not sure how to get my structure and format to translate.
Can anybody clarify what the general workflow would be for this process?  All I have been able to find is the flowchart showing full FM to XML to XML Author and back to full FM.  From my test driving of the Tech Comm Suite though it has not appeared that easy.
    ---Corey---

    Hi Corey...
Here's a rough outline of what is needed.
    1) First, you'll need to define the data model that your documents are using. This could be some existing model like DITA or a new custom model. Depending on the complexity of your document's needs, this may drive that decision.
    2) Once you've got a model, you'll need to create a structure application (in full FM). This structure application defines the model and appearance of documents. This will provide the fundamental structure of the "template" as well as placeholder text for the elements where you want people to provide information.
    3) Then you have to install the structure application on each of the XML Author installations. This involves copying the structure application definitions file (structapps.fm) onto the client systems as well as the structure application files (into the proper location as indicated in the structure application definition). The structure application definition may reference these files at a network location, which might simplify the deployment, but would require that each person is connected to that network in order to create the files (pros/cons with this approach).
Once that's set up, your XML Author users should (in theory) be able to create a new document using the new structure application, then send you the resulting files. Lots of hand waving here .. but that's the general idea.
    Cheers,

  • Sorenson Squeeze question

I just got squeeze and love it for encoding to Flash. One question, and I ask it here because the Sorenson forums are totally dry. I have been asked to create an flv with the size 15-30MB (or Medium setting)
Right now the ones I create end up being around 200MB.

I'm really having a hard time with this and I need to deliver this file. If I change the max file size to 30MB, the picture looks terrible! Somehow the previous editor was able to do this http://www.berdonllp.com/ecast/
I'm using Sorenson Squeeze 6 to create the flv.
The one on their site which I downloaded, is 15MB and 560kbps Data Rate. And the quality is decent.

  • Firefox will not play WebM video encoded by Sorenson Squeeze Pro 8

A short video encoded to WebM using Sorenson Squeeze Pro 8.0.48. Chrome and Opera play the HTML5 webm video with a problem. Firefox 10.0.1 and 11 just display a dimmed window with and "X" in the middle and will not load or play anything. Sorenson is a commercially proven product as confirmed by Chrome and Opera, so what gives with Firefox?

We have just completed our webm testing with Telestream's Episode Pro 6.2.1.1 and not surprisingly, the same results as Sorenson Squeeze Pro 8.
Chrome, Opera and Safari browsers play HTML5 webm video as expected.
Firefox rigidly enforces the server .htaccess configuration to specifically state Mime Types, then it will/does work.

Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.
