Workflow to zip specific folder also includes all desktop items

Hello,
I have built an Automator workflow that selects a specific folder ("Mail") in my user account's Library folder, creates an archive file of that folder on the desktop.
However, when I unzip the archive file, I find that all items on the desktop also have been included in the zip file.
What needs to be done to the workflow so that it zips only the selected folder, excluding all of the desktop items from the zip archive file?

There's no cut and paste in the Finder on Macs as there is in Windows. You can copy and paste, but most people just drag and drop a file to move it from one place to another.
In any open or save file dialog window, click the small triangle next to the filename to expand the window and show a mini-Finder with the sidebar, allowing you to easily change the location you're looking at or navigate into subfolders.

I have now made it so that all new folders now have all desktop items in them. I used the control+fn+f1 keys and it created this problem, I tried un-doing it by using those same keys again, but it doesn't work. Wondering if anyone else has run into this problem, if it can be fixed and if so, how?

You may not have created a mess, it's possible you simply don't know where your data is after migrating. Had you followed the Setup Assistant's on-screen prompts when you initially turned on your new system you would be running just fine by now. My guess is you haven't been exposed to Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips.
Migration Assistant (MA) and Setup Assistant (SA) are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference is MA creates a new user account which can be confusing to some users. If you successfuly migrated then log out of your existing using account and you should see the new user account. Log into that account then you should see the migrated data. If you do then use Pondini's Transferring files from one User Account to another.
However if you have totally made of mess out of things then I'd start over, this time using the Setup Assistant Tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.

ACL / ACE - Copy folder structure including all rights

Dear readers
A question about the proper settings in ACL/ACE for to copy a given folder structure incl. all ACL/ACE rights.
Situation:
On a OS X server, the admin user did setup a sample structure of folders and files with the corresponding access rights.
Now this folder structure has to be accessible for the "normal" users in a shared folder.
This sample folder must be secured against changes from "normal" users BUT if it is copied it must keep all the set access rights.
Question:
What's the best way to do so?
1) Set the protected flag of the most top level folder of this sample structure folder set at it's done?
2) Use of a Apple Script to achieve this?
3) Use of a Bash Script to achieve this?
4) Can only be done as the admin user which did setup this structure?
5) Other best effort suggestions to achieve this?
Known things:
- chmod is involved to do it on terminal
- It must be possible as the system does something similar when a new user is created.
Thank you in advance for anyones help and suggestions.
Any note and suggestion for easy-to-read and illustrated documentations are welcome.

Delete all desktop items

At work I use a PowerMac G4 AGP with OSX 10.3. I accidentally dragged and dropped 1000+ documents onto the desktop. Is there any way to automatically delete every item on the desktop? The machine won't respond to any commands, (apple+A to select them all and delete them, etc.) beacause the performance is slowed down after login by all these items. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have a couple of options. Maybe you would like to follow up on Ed's suggestion.
If you want to follow Kurt's suggestion and move the files with unix commands, I can tell you a little more about dealing with files that do not have extensions. The trick in this business is that the * character is a wildcard. So, if you issue the command
mv *.jpg ~/Desktop/temp/
that will move all files which have the extension jpg and anything before the period. These files are moved to the temp folder on your Desktop.
If you have files without an extension, you will have to find some other common character to latch onto. For instance, if you have one or more files that begin with the letter s, then you could issue a command such as
mv s* ~/Desktop/temp/
and all files that begin with s will be moved. Or, if you had a bunch of files that had the combination xyz buried in their names, you could issue the command
mv xyz ~/Desktop/temp/
and they would be moved. So, the point of using the wildcard is to find some common characters in the names of a bunch of files, so that you can move them all at once.
The hidden files that Kurt mentioned all begin with a . (period) and you will normally not see those. They are considered invisible files. If you issued the mv * command as I suggested, you will move those also. Kurt's suggestion, which I agree with, is to avoid moving those files, because some of them may have have a special use for the operating system.

All desktop items missing, even with 2 monitors!

When I turn my Power Mac G3 on, all my desktop items are missing.. everything. I thought that the monitor setting got changed to "2 monitors" and the desktop items were set to be on the other monitor, so I hooked up a second one, but I'm still missing everithing. You can see the end of some of the desktop items on the edge of the monitor, but I can't grab them or move them. I tried to restart from the OS install CD but I can't see anything to be able to access any of the windows or the top bar. Is there a way of reseting this so I can see again? BTW, when I click on the monitor, I get a beep sound... I guess there is a window open waiting for a command or something. Also, the monitors are working because I'm able to see my wallpaper!

ok! so here is the recap! (and forgive me I don't know the proper names of things!): The main monitor input (motherboard) failed, so I had put in two monitor cards in the 2 out of 3 slots available in the G3. After trying all of you suggestions (zapping the PRAM several times, switching cards, and switching monitors), last night I took both cards out and placed one of them in the slot that was empty before.... that worked! I can see all of my desktop items and menu bar, software, tested everithing, all great...
Now there is one more thing; the computer still thinks there are 2 monitors hooked up. My mouse gets lost (because it goes to the "second" monitor, apparently), and when I go to my Monitor Settings, it shows that I have two monitors connected. The only other thing I can think of is that its still counting the "main" monitor input as one of the active ones, even though there isn't a monitor plugged in there. Now it makes me think that the original problem was that, and when I had 2 monitors conected the computer thought I had 3!
The question now is, is there a way of disabling the "main" monitor input so that the computer wont read it as an active one?

Build Specification does not include all files for my VI.

As a part of a semester project i have build a VI to control a filtration unit. The VI is working fine on my computer, but I graduate next month and I have to deliver the files on to a person on the university. The problem is that even though i use the "Build Specification" function (i use LabView 2011 Professional Development System), files are still missing when the program is started on the new computer. A warning in the project file indicates that files are missing or removed to a different location. A file named pid.lib is not found, and it seems like the path to each file is the same as on my computer, but the build specification doesn't change that to fit the new computer.
I am a LabView newbe, and I have searced this forum and help files to try to solve this by my self, but now my time is becoming limited. Can anyone help me with this?

Hi Henrik
You can see what versions of LabVIEW and which Toolkits is installed in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). If you Open MAX, and Select "My System" --> "Software in the left menu, then you can see all software installed.
If you click on the LabVIEW installation. In this case LabVIEW 2011, you can see all toolkits installed.
When you run a LabVIEW project / application on another PC, LabVIEW will use a defined priority of where to load the files from. This is specified in Tools --> Options --> Path --> VI Search Path.
So LabVIEW will frist try to find the VI/VI library in the folder of your project and if the VI is not located there it will look for it as a build function in the vilib, userlib or instrlib folders of LabVIEW. These folders contains VI's and VI libraries installed with LabVIEW.
In this case, as mentioned above you properly don't have the same toolkits installed on both machines. Therefore the PID.lib is not found in the vilib folder as it should be, and thereby you get the error. You can confirm this by reviewing the installed modules as mentioned above.

TS3230 Why aren't Google and Yahoo loading in Safari with Maverics? After several failed attempts, a "wireless diagnostics" zipped folder appeared on my desktop. I'm using a macbook pro with OSX 10.9.2

I updated to Maverics and now yahoo and google do not load in Safari - i get a "connot connect to server" warning. other websites load just fine.
Also, after several attempts to access the aforementioned sites, a zipped file/folder appeared on my desktop titled "WirelessDiagnostics"
What in the world is going on here? I attached a screenshot of the zip file.

ConfigurationSet for specific Module(s) does not include ALL applicable updates

The optional update of March 2015 for WE8S contains some UWF and ELM related updates (KB3037597, KB3036200). I tried to create a ConfigurationSet that only contains updates for UWF and ELM - this was done by creating a answer file that contains the "Unified
Write Filter" and "Embedded Lockdown Manager" module only (removed "Embedded Core") and then used "Add applicable updates" from the "Validate" menu. KB3037597 has been added for UWF, but KB3036200 has not been added.
Next I tried to add "Windows 8 Application Launcher" and "Gesture Filter" (one by one), but that didn't added the KB3036200. "USB Filter" seems not to be a module in my database, so I could not verify that. If I add the "Embedded
Core" module and choose "Add applicable updates" again, KB3036200 becomes part of the configuration, but this also includes many other updates.
Is there a safe to to create a configuration set that contains ALL updates that are related to a specific module?

Make a copy of your answer file that builds the image.
With the copy of the answer file run add applicable updates
Compare the two answer files and find the differences which should be the various KB update modules. The answer file diff tool will not work with WES8, you will have to do this by hand.
Create a new answer file with only these modules - generate config set

I only use Image Capture, so I can't speak for other software.
Here is how I select a Scan To destination:
If you are using the minimal details screen, you should have the same submenu to the left of the page size.

How to make Finder NOT to show files from a specific folder in "All My Files"?

Can someone please advice how to make finder NOT to show files from a specific folder in "All My Files"? See the attach - I recently installed Civilization 5 from Steam and now I have a lot of unneeded files (*.log and *.ini) shown in All My Files colder in Finder.
I don't want to see them. Any advise?

Using "All my Files" was very handy before all this rubbish popped up. =(

Smart folder doesn't include all the files it should

I'm trying to set up a smart folder to show all .graffle (OmniGraffle) documents on my Mac modified within the last 7 days, but no matter what I do, there are many that don't show up.
Even if I just set up a simple query to show all .graffle files, it only shows me a few. There are whole directories it seems to overlook, but these directories aren't special in any way that I can think of. They just exist alongside the directories that ARE being indexed.
If I move the files into the other directory, they show up.
Any ideas?

The simple query I'm working with is just to search "This Mac" for the string "graffle" appearing in the File Name
It just seems to be certain OmniGraffle files that don't show up, Lots of older graffle files do show up; these are all in a particular directory. The ones that I've attached to email messages show up (as being in my "mail" directory). It's just the ones I've created in the last 6 months or so - all for one particular project and located in the same directory - that don't show up.
Just now I did a test where I created 2 new files and saved them to different places. One in the problem directory and one in a different directory, and I couldn't duplicate the issue. I made a new smart folder, and both files showed up. This leads me to believe it's an issue with specific files, not a directory.
So I did a test where I opened one of the problem docs. I made one minor edit and closed the doc. Then I made a new smart folder, and it showed up.
Finally, I did a test where I opened up one of the problem docs and immediately closed it. Then I made a new smart folder, and it still did not show up.
Next, I'm going to compare the properties (get info) of a problem doc with one that shows up in the query.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
          Envelope Index
          ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.
