Working with a String

Hi!
Trying to teach myself java.
String cat = new String ();I was reading about a command charAt, I would like to use this command to populate an array.
private static final char[] animal = {};I want put 'c' in the zero spot, 'a' in the first and 't' in the 2nd. How would I do this.
thanxs,
Warren

There are two ways of doing this - First off, as part of the array initialization:
private static final char[] animal = { 'c', 'a', 't' };Alternatively you can define a char array of length three and then populate each position:
private static final char[] animal = new char[3];
animal[0] = 'c';
animal[1] = 'a';
animal[2] = 't';

  • SQL to work with character string

    I've got a simple bit of SQL:
    SELECT DISTINCT pj.NAME job_title
                  , LENGTH(pj.NAME) len
                  , INSTR(pj.NAME, ':', 3, 1) find
               FROM hr.per_jobs pj;This lists job titles, their length, and the position of the first ":" in the job title. E.g:
    JOB_TITLE              |LEN    |FIND
    Acc Asst/Auditor::::   |20     |17
    Acc Asst/Auditor:A:::  |21     |17What I'd like to do is to use SQL to output the character to the right of the 1st ":" in the job title. E.g. in the above 2 rows, that'd be a ':' for row 1, and an 'A' for the second row.
    I can export the job titles out to Excel and use that to do what I want, but I wanted to see if there was a way to use SQL to do it.
    In Excel the LEFT() and RIGHT() functions allow me to do the trick, but I can't see how to do it using SQL. I can see that there are LPAD and RPAD functions, but I don't think they do the same job.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Given below is the query:
    CREATE TABLE x5( c1 VARCHAR2(50));
    INSERT INTO x5 VALUES ('Acc Asst/Auditor::::');
    INSERT INTO x5 VALUES ('Acc Asst/Auditor:A:::');
    COMMIT;
    C1 LENGTH(C1) POSITION C
    Acc Asst/Auditor:::: 20 17 :
    Acc Asst/Auditor:A::: 21 17 A
    SELECT
    c1,
    LENGTH(c1),
    INSTR(c1, ':') position,
    SUBSTR(c1, INSTR(c1, ':') + 1, 1) char_right
    FROM
    x5;
    Hope it helps,

  • Working with strings and cell references

    Hi all,
    I'm a fairly new user to the Mac world but I'm a power user of Excel trying to moving into the number environment. I'm currently experiencing some very inconsistent behaviour working with text strings in Numbers.
    I've used both '&' and CONCATENATE to try to concatenate strings and cell references and regualarly I'm getting the situation where the formula initially works and then when I save and reopen the file the cells containing the error return a syntax error.
    Upon examining the formula it appears that the cell references are converted from cell references to simple text so & (b2) & becomes &b2&.
    Any ideas what is causing this?

    I apoligise for this tardy response. Firstly, the issue occurred not when I first create the formula but when I save, close and reopen the document.
    Upon examining the formula, the cell reference is not being recognised and so instead of A2 referencing a cell it's simple A2 which causes an error.
    And this is happening in more than one cell (whole rows of cells actually as I've often created a formula and copied it down 10 or 200 rows).
    It is also happening on more than one file Badunit so I don't think it's a corrupt file.
    It's more than a little annoying though as it means every few days when I go back in to a file I need to spend a few minutes recreating the formulas.
    Any other suggestions?
    Oh and I've tried both methods of formula creation of typing the reference and clicking, but the result is the same.

  • ScanFile with scanning string modifier %s[in]

    For skipping over non-numeric characters by reading ASCII files I used to write, e.g.
    ScanFile (fhandle, "%s[i8]>%f", &x);
    This method works well with CVI 5.0 to 8.11 but no more with CVI 2009 and 2010.  I have modified my old code using other scanning string modifiers:
    ScanFile (fhandle, "%s>%s[dt#]%f", &x);    or
    ScanFile (fhandle, "%s>R1= %f", &x);
    The first one does not work with a string like “R1=200”.  The second requires the exact string and is more inconvenient.  Although the modified code works well now with CVI 2009, I would like to know why the scanning string modifier [in] does not work with CVI 2009 and 2010. Is there something wrong in my code, is it a feature of the new versions of CVI or is it a bug? How about CVI 2013?

    Thank you very much for your reply.
    I would not use "%s[i8]>%f" to read the number 200 in string "R1=200".  I just wanted to take this string as an example to say that I couldn't simply change all of  "%s[in]>%f"s  in my code to  “%s>%s[dt#]%f"s, somewhere I had to use a quite inconvenient "%s>R1= %f". Therefore I do hope that "%s[in]>%f" works by a new version of CVI.
    In my code I use a lot of Scan (string, "%s[in]>%f", &x) and all of them work always correctly, also with CVI 2009-2010. But none of ScanFile (fhandle, "%s[in]>%f", &x) works with my CVI 2009, they work only with earlier versions.. That’s very strange to me as I couldn't find in the documentation/Help of CVI 2009-2010 a description that "%s[in]>%f" should not be used with the ScanFile function,
    My further tests showed that this problem seems to be related to CVI Run-time.  By reading the same ASCII file, the same executable created by CVI 8.11 works with CVI Run-time 8.1 but does not with Run-time versions 9.0 to 10.0.1.419.

    Hi JayJT,
    The Miscellaneous is located in the contact list that you used for the connection.
    So , you need to edit the page, then edit the contact list that you used, in the web part properties of the contact list, you will find Miscellaneous, then expand it and select ‘Server Render’ .
    I hope this helps.

  • Use listbox to work with strings

    Hello guys,
    I am struggling looking for a way to work with strings using a listbox. I think the problem is quite simple, but I don´t know how to implement it using labview.
    I have an array of N elements (N is different everytime I run the program), and each element is a string (actually each element is a command). I would like load this array, and then if I select an element (by double-clicking or something similar), I would like to get a translation of the command.
    In fact, I only need a way of loading the array, selecting an element, and then put it into a variable that would be translated with a SubVI that I have already implemented.
    Do you have any clue of doing this? I have tried with the multicolumn listbox, but I cannot connect any array of strings to it, and I am starting to have a lack of new ideas...
    Many thanks for your help

  • Working with clobs or extremelly large strings - please urgent

    Hi,
    i have a VARCHAR2 variable that is VARCHAR2(32767), is this possible?
    and i receive to the procedure a VARCHAR2 with almost 28000 character, then i have to insert that value as a CLOB in a xmltype table. This would look like a question to XML DB forum, but what i really need to know is how i can insert a string of that value in a table with a CLOB field. When i try i receive missing expression error. here goes the code:
    Procedure Insert_Data(xmlSTR in VARCHAR2)
    IS
         SQLStmt                                   VARCHAR2(32767);
    xmlDoc clob;
    BEGIN
    xmlDoc := 'xmltype(''<?xml version="1.0"?>' || xmlSTR || ''')';
    xml_table_name := 'XML_TABLE';
         EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'create table XML_TABLE of xmltype';
    -- EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'INSERT INTO ' || xml_table_name || ' VALUES (' || xmlDoc || ')'; --> with this expression i receive "PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type" error in compiling time.
    -- and with this i get "missing rigth parentesis" error in run time
         SQLStmt := ' INSERT INTO ' || xml_table_name || ' VALUES (' || xmlDoc || ')';
         EXECUTE IMMEDIATE SQLStmt;
    i'm working with oracle 9.2.07 in windows xp and also tried creating a table with a CLOB column and insert xmlDoc value for it, creating a loop and concatenating value from the string
    can someone help please

    You need to match your datatypes. Either insert an xmltype into a table of xmltype or insert a clob into a clob column. I have demonstated both below.

  • NXT Flatten to String Not Working with Clusters and Arrays

    Hello,
    My name is Joshua and I am from the FIRST Tech Challenge Team 4318, Green Machine. We are trying to write a program that will write to a configuration file and read it back. The idea is that we will be able to write to a config file from our computer that will be read by our autonomous program when it runs. This will define what the autonomous program does.
    The easiest way to do this seems to be flattening a data structure to a string, saving it to a file, and then reading back and unflattening it. The issue is that the flatten to string and unflatten from string VIs don't seem to work with arrays and clusters on the NXT. It does work when running on the computer. We've tried arrays, clusters, clusters in arrays and arrays in clusters, none seem to work. Thinking it was something to do with reading the string from a file, we tried bypassing the file functionality, still not working. It does work with basic data types though, such as strings and numbers.
    No error is thrown from what we can tell. All you get is a blank data structure out of the unflatten VI.
    The program attached is a test program I've been working on to get this functionality to work. It will display the hex content of what is going into the file, coming out of the file, and then the resulting data from the unflatten string, as well as any errors that have been thrown. The data type we are using simulates what we would like to store. There is also a file length in and out counter. The out file is a little larger because the NXT write file VI adds a new line character on to the end (thus the use of the strip white space VI). This character was corrupting even basic data types saved to file.
    I would like to know if there is a problem with what we are doing, or if it is simply not possible to flatten arrays on the NXT. Please ask if you have any questions about the code. Thank you in advanced!
    Joshua

    Hi jfireball,
    This is a very interesting situation. Take a look at what kbbersch said. I also urge you to post in the FTC Forums. You posted your question to the general LabVIEW forums, but by posting to the FTC Forums, you will have access to others that are using the NXT hardware.

  • EL Map won't work with numerical index - works with string

    If I populate a map with a numeric index, the values won't appear when I refer to it as ${myMap[0]} in JSP. In my servlet I populate myMap by doing a put(0,value).
    However, when I do a myMap["index0"] or myMap.index0, it works! I simply change the line that populates the Map to put("index0",value).
    Why won't it work with a numerical index? Does it have something to do with JDK 1.5's autoboxing? I cast the 0 to an int in the put( ) method, but that makes no difference.
    What could be happening here? Does it work for you?
    Thanks.

    Whats causing this?
    Basically autoboxing puts an Integer object into the Map.
    ie: map.put(new Integer(0), "myValue")
    EL evaluates 0 as a Long and thus goes looking for a Long as the key in the map.
    ie it evaluates: map.get(new Long(0))
    As a Long is never equal to an Integer object, it does not find the entry in the map.
    Thats it in a nutshell.
    JSP page demonstrating this:
    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core"%>
    <%@ page import="java.util.*" %>

      map.put(new Integer(2), "Integer(2)");
      map.put(new Long(2), "Long(2)");
      map.put(42, "AutoBoxedNumber");
      pageContext.setAttribute("myMap", map);
      Integer lifeInteger = new Integer(42);
      Long lifeLong = new Long(42);
    %>
      <h3>Looking up map in JSTL - integer vs long </h3>
      This page demonstrates how JSTL maps interact with different types used for keys in a map.
      Specifically the issue relates to autoboxing by java using map.put(1, "MyValue") and attempting to display it as ${myMap[1]}
      The map "myMap" consists of four entries with different keys: A String, an Integer, a Long and an entry put there by AutoBoxing Java 5 feature.
      <table border="1">
         <tr><th>Key</th><th>value</th><th>Key Class</th></tr>
         <c:forEach var="entry" items="${myMap}" varStatus="status">
         <tr>
           <td>${entry.key}</td>
           <td>${entry.value}</td>
           <td>${entry.key.class}</td>
         </tr>
         </c:forEach>
    </table>
        <h4> Accessing the map</h4>
        Evaluating: ${"${myMap['2']}"} = <c:out value="${myMap['2']}"/><br>
        Evaluating: ${"${myMap[2]}"}   = <c:out value="${myMap[2]}"/><br>
        Evaluating: ${"${myMap[42]}"}   = <c:out value="${myMap[42]}"/><br>
        <p>
        As you can see, the EL Expression for the literal number retrieves the value against the java.lang.Long entry in the map.
        Attempting to access the entry created by autoboxing fails because a Long is never equal to an Integer
        <p>
        lifeInteger = <%= lifeInteger %><br/>
        lifeLong = <%= lifeLong %><br/>
        lifeInteger.equals(lifeLong) : <%= lifeInteger.equals(lifeLong) %> <br>
        That at least explains what is going on.
    Not sure exactly what I would do to "fix" it. Would have to look at what the requirements are. But basically I think it would end up as having to use Longs rather than Integers as keys in the map, meaning autoboxing could not be used.
    Cheers,

    EDIT:In the glxinfo command its say 'OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc'. Why?
    I don't really know it but "Unknown chipset" sounds like the card may be so new that it is not yet supported, even in testing. "softpipe" means that it is using software rendering instead of the actual 3d hardware.
    It probably will work with newer git versions from mesa and xf86-video-ati and maybe the radeon branch of the kernel. All is found in the inofficial [radeon] repository:

  • Navigation no longer working with

    I have been working with facelets now for a bit. I am on MyFaces 1.1 with the facelet libraries from the Exadel project wizard added.
    Any time I have an action with from-outcome but no from-action specified, everything works as expected. I can route to whichever view. When I add the from-action tag to my configuration, it calls my action and action listeners fine, but the requesting page is always reloaded (I never go to a new view).
    I have verified my "h:commandLink" components are within my "h:form" tag. Hierarchy:
    jsp:root/jsp:text/ui:composition/ui:define/h:form/table/tr/td/h:commandLinkCommand link code:
    <h:commandLink value="mylink" action="#{userBean.saveCurrentUser}"/>
    <t:saveState id="adminUserBean" value="#{userBean}"/>
    </h:form>
    ...(t = tomahawk namespace)
    My template is nothing more than a bunch of div tags & HTML table elements, no JSF logic really.
    Relevant tags in my faces-config.xml:
    <managed-bean>
    <managed-bean-name>userBean</managed-bean-name>
    <managed-bean-class>mypackage.UserBean</managed-bean-class>
    <managed-bean-scope>request</managed-bean-scope>
    </managed-bean>
    <navigation-rule>
    <from-view-id>/administration/*</from-view-id>
    <navigation-case>
    <from-outcome>edit-user</from-outcome>
    <to-view-id>/administration/users/edit.jsp</to-view-id>
    </navigation-case>
    <navigation-case>
    <from-action>#{userBean.saveCurrentUser}</from-action>
    <from-outcome>success</from-outcome>
    <to-view-id>/administration/users/list.jsp</to-view-id>
    </navigation-case>
    ...Code of saveCurrentUser:
    public String saveCurrentUser()
    try
    return "success";
    catch (Exception ex)
      ...(logging)...
      return "failed";
    ...The action to edit the user that contains an action listener works. (navigate from /administration/users/list.jsp to /administration/users/edit.jsp).
    The action to save the user successfully saves the user from what I can see (log is clear), but the page stays at /administration/users/edit.jsp instead of going back to the list.jsp.
    I am using *.jsp instead of something like *.xhtml since Excadel doesn't support anything but *.jsp at this point in time.
    I cannot figure out why the "from-action" is causing the navigation to fail.
    No matter what I try, I get the same results. I attempted to update my facelets libraries, but I messed up along the way and was getting incompatible classes across the jar files, so I just rolled back.
    Any assistance is appreciated. Even if you don't have a solution, if you know of a way to have the view or myfaces print out the navigation rule processing to the logs, that would be good as well. I am using log4j right now as my logger.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Okay, got logging turned way up on all "org.apache.*" and "com.sun.*".
    Here is the problem (don't know how to fix it yet:
    113121 DEBUG [http-8080-Processor4] org.apache.myfaces.application.NavigationHandlerImpl      - handleNavigation fromAction=null outcome=success no matching navigation-case found, staying on current ViewRootWhy the action is being executed, but afterwards it says fromAction is null, I do not know yet.
    I am hoping it is possible with the facelets + myfaces integration, as it would be a lot of work for me to go away from myfaces, and I need the facelet functionality.

  • Firefox no longer working with Multibox

    http://www.liamsmart.co.uk/Downloads/multiBox/ used to work with Firefox. I last tested it successfully about September 2012, with whatever the current version of Firefox was.
    I tested it tonight, with 21.0 and it was not working.
    It works with current versions of IE and Opera.
    I reinstalled Firefox version 20.0 and that does not work either.
    I had Firefox version 12.0 on a laptop and it was working tonight.
    I upgraded the laptop version to 21.0 and it no longer works.

    Could be an issue with MooTools 1.2.x

  • Facebook and Slacker no longer working with Firefox. Still work with Explorer. Until a week ago problem did not exist.

    I am for about one week not able to input information on Facebook. Also the Facebook page appears in a huge font. Regarding Slacker I do not see any available online radio stations. Until about a week ago everything worked fine. At present I can work with Internet Explorer, but at present can no longer work with Firefox.
