Working with Extended Characters
I have CS3 on XP SP2
In InDesign, both upper and lower case Pi show up amongst the other letters of the Greek Alphabet in fonts with extended character sets (Times or Arial). However, in Illustrator, the lower case pi is missing... it goes straight from omnicron to rho, skipping pi. I searched and finally found pi clustered with a select few "math" Greek symbols like sigma and mu. InDesign has glyph sorting options, but apparently not Illustrator. Is it possible to sort the glyphs by unicode in Illustrator to make it easier to locate certain characters?
Also, the lower case pi I found in Illustrator had no unicode and it is not rendered in many of the fonts that do in fact contain a lower case pi, under Unicode U+03C0.
Another related annoyance is that when I create a line of text (say in Times New Roman), I sometimes like to highlight the text and rapidly step through the fonts with the up and down arrows until I find one I like. This works fine in In-design and will show pink squares wherever a glyph is not supported by a font, but in Illustrator if the selected text contains certain extended characters, when I step to the next font in the list, the results can be unpredictable.
In Illustrator CS3, I found that both Arial and Times New Roman have TWO lowercase pi characters in the glyphs panel. The first one, in the math chars near the top of the glyphs panel, says "No Unicode". The second one is lower down in the glyphs panel, after the Greek, after the Cyrillic, and before the Hebrew. It has the expected Unicode value U+03C0. I'm guessing this second pi with a Unicode value probably works better when changing to other fonts.

Error with extended characters
hi i have a problem with extended characters and it only happens when i have an attachment with the mail
MimeBodyPart bp = new MimeBodyPart();
String content = "                        ";
bp.setContent( content, "text/plain; charset=UTF-8" );
mp.addBodyPart( bp );
//code for adding a attachment is added to the mp using MimeBodyPart
msg.setContent( mp ); // add Multipart
msg.saveChanges(); // generate appropriate headers
ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
msg.writeTo( baos );msg is a MimeMessage.
Now this msg is stored in a cache and later retrieved using
String s = "";
java.lang.Object o = msg.getContent();
if ( o instanceof String )
s = (String) o;
else if ( o instanceof Multipart )
try
Multipart mp = (Multipart) o;
MimeBodyPart bp = (MimeBodyPart) mp.getBodyPart( 0 );
s = (String) bp.getContent();
catch ( Exception e )
cLog.error(e.getMessage(),e);
}now s contains "€  ‚ ƒ „ … † ‡ ˆ ‰ Š ‹ Œ             " which is wrong.
This has been bugging me for a couple of days now.
could anyone please give a solution.
Many Thanks in advanceUsing these literal non-ASCII characters in the string constant might
look great in your editor but might not be giving the correct Unicode
values. Try replacing the special characters with Unicode escapes
(\u####).
If that doesn't work, step through the original string and print out
each character as an integer. Then do the same for the string you
fetch from the message. Compare the integer values. If they're
not the same, post the details. If they are the same, the problem
is most likely in how you're displaying the characters you read
from the message. -
Working with Chinese characters: How to paste and modify them as sentences; not as individual images?
From 2004, this is so far the most detailed answer I could find: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Adobe-Illustrator-1027/FONTS-display-problem-Adobe.htm, but is this really still the most up-to date solution?
Is it possible at all to work with Chinese characters, if I don't have the Chinese version of Illustrator? (http://www.proz.com/forum/dtp_desktop_publishing/221125-chinese_in_indesign.html)Thanks for your reply.
I'm using Version 17.1.0 (64-bit) - basically CS6.
Operating system is Windows 8.1. Installed is the simplied Chinese language package.
I have received the text in a Word document. It contains mixed characters, something like this:
教授资料
学术背景:
博士;曾于波恩大学(Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn)、台湾师范大学、
I have tried to paste it in the two following ways:
1) to create a text box and paste the text. The result is that some of the characters are not showed correctly.
2) Paste it directly without any preparation. This result into a single "image" or group of images. I can cancel modify each character one at a time, or I can dissolve the group, but the result is the same. -
IsValid does not work with extended email address
This invalidates valid addresses.
<cfset testemail = '"No One"
<[email protected]>'>
<cfoutput>#testemail#</cfoutput><br />
<cfif isValid("email",testemail) >
good email
<cfelse>
bad email
</cfif>
Any ideas how to make this work with extended
addresses?> blah blah <[email protected]> is a predictable format.
You can use string functions to find the part between the angle
brackets and apply the isValid function to that.
Yep, but isValid() just doesn't reliably validate even the
email address
part of that string (well: that *exact* example, sure it
will). It can't
be used to RELIABLY validate email addresses. The regex it
uses is
incomplete. It'll validate a lot of valid email addresses,
but it'll also
reject a number of valid patterns, and validate some that are
wrong.

JTidy with extended characters?
Hi all,
I've been using JTidy to tidy up html to valid xml, and it works fine, except when I have extended characters in the HTML.
Has anybody else come across this problem? Is there any solution? JTidy doesn't look like its had any releases since 2001. Is there any other active projects that do the same thing?
thanks,
JustinJust looking at the input, and all extended characters are entities.
So the input is:
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
ýÿăĈ
</body>
</html>and the output is:
<html>
<head>
<meta name="generator" content="HTML Tidy, see www.w3.org" />
<title></title>
</head>
<body>
[][]
</body>
</html>where the "[]" characters represent a box. I.e. a character System.out.println can't render.
If I look at the integer value of them, they are 3 & 8.
So I guess I'm trying to turn off the entity replacement in the JTidy. Is this possible?
thanks,

Airport express won't work with Extend Network, only Create Network
My Airport Express when it is setup to extend my network while plugged into Ethernet will Create a network under settings. If I change this to Extend A Network it doesn't work properly. It keeps kicking me on and off WiFi, but the former way works with no foreseen issues. What is going on? I can't extend my guest network with the first option, I don't believe.
I have a 5th Generation AirPort Extreme and a 1st Gen AirPort Express.My Airport Express when it is setup to extend my network while plugged into Ethernet will Create a network under settings
This is the correct setting to "extend" the network using an Ethernet connection. Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.
If I change this to Extend A Network it doesn't work properly.
This is because "Extend a wireless network" is used only when AirPort devices communicate with each other using wireless only......not Ethernet.
It would help if Apple used settings like "Extend a network using Ethernet" and "Extend a network using wireless only".....but they don't.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be configured as the main router if you want it to provide a Guest Network. It cannot do this if it is configured in Bridge Mode. -
'BAPI_POEC_CREATE' function doesn't work with extended classic scenario
Hi everybody.
Antecedents:
We are working in an extended classic scenario.
When we create a Purchase Order via ITS in SRM, the system works ok, the PO is replicated in the ERP system.
But when we execute BAPI_POEC_CREATE function module in order to create a PO in SRM, no message are available in the application monitor, but the PO is not replicated in the ERP system.
Both exampled were created with exactly same data (partners, items, categories, accounts, )
Moreover when we modify the second PO created via ITS, the systems doesnt show any error message, we can order our PO again without error, but the PO isnt replicate in the ERP system.
1. We executed BAPI_POEC_GETDETAIL function module, and there is only a difference between POs, E_PO_STATUS table.
PO created by transaction has 8 entries:
I1009 X
I1015 X
I1021
I1038
I1039 X
I1043
I1080 X
I1180
And PO created by BAPI has 5 entries:
I1015 X
I1021
I1038
I1043
I1180
2. We run BBP_PD transaction, and there is only a difference.
PO created by transaction mode shows:
- Message: W BBP_PD 830 Default values have been taken from Vendor PRUEBA10/purchasing organization Área Global Compras (org. compras)
And PO created by BAPI
- Message: No Messages
Could anyone help me with the problem?
Thanks in advance.
Raúl.Hi Raúl,
this is exact, BAPI_POEC_CREATE is designed to create local PO.
If you want to replicate it to R/3, then you have to change it to an ECS PO.
In BADI BBP_DOC_CHANGE_BADI, called at the real beginning of BBP_PD_PO_CREATE, you will have to change some data to enable the ECS scenario:
- change header subtype to EP
- change header log system to SRM (keep FI LS as is)
- determine a backend purch group & org
- complete BE fields (be_object_id, be_object_type, don't change be_log_system because it will be determined during the transfer, be_pur_org and be_pur_group will also be determined during the transfer)
- ... and maybe other R/3 relevant fields
Compare both PO one by one, and adapt the gaps.
Rgds
Christophe

I am a new comer to i18n .
I am using a session bean which returns a string of ansi characters(ýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýý
etc.) to the jsp. The jsp uses charset=iso-8859-1.
When I run this on weblogic 5.1 on Windows , the characters gets displayed correctly
on the browser.
When I run this on weblogic 5.1 on Solaris, The characters does not display at
all. Is it a bug with Weblogic or do I have to use i18n.
Any character that is hard coded on the jsp gets displayed perfectly fine.It is
only with the variables value that gets passed from EJB to JSP that creates a
problem.
Can anybody explain why is it so.I have had similar problem with character encoding when working on a Solaris
enviroment,
using jdk 1.2 instead of 1.3 has worked for us but it will be good to have a
better
solution and a good explanation of this (to me) unexpected behavior....
Cheers...

Database A: WE8ISO8859P15
Database B: WE8MSWIN1252
When i do a dump(desc) on both columns I get for the reversed question mark on DB A ASCII Code 133, and for DB B I get 191.This has nothing to do with group by, from what you describe.
It seems you have a illegal character and replacement character in the db's.
How did you insert these two characters/rows and please also post actual dump output (including the query, select col, dump(col,1016), ...).
How I can I convert between the different character sets, so that my GROUP BY works as well?Firstly, you need to make sure the database character sets are capable of storing every character from your clients/apps and that you have a properly setup locale on the client side (including matching char set part of NLS_LANG).
E.g. a win-1252 client is not supported by a iso 8859-15 server, at least not if you are using or plan to use 'windows specific' characters (like the ... ellipsis). -
Problems working with Japanese characters found in filenames to determine invalid shortcuts
Hi,
I have written a script that uses test-path to query whether or not *.LNK shortcut files have valid Target Paths to determine whether or not the LNK files should be kept if invalid or contain temporary locations. This works perfectly for most shortcuts with
the exception of those with filenames in Japanese/Chinese/Cyrillic fonts.
The script is made up of the following action:-
gci "$nextdrive\Users\$env:username\AppData\Roaming\microsoft\office\recent" -Filter *.lnk | % { $shell.CreateShortcut( $_.FullName ) } | ? { ( Test-Path ( $_.TargetPath )) -eq $false -or $_.TargetPath -like '*temporary internet files*' -or $_.TargetPath
-like '*temp*'} | % { Remove-item -LiteralPath $_.FullName }
If I run the script when a file name exists in the folder above such as : 1、目录.doc.LNK
the Powershell script from the ISE returns the following error:-
"Cannot bind argument to parameter 'Path' because it is an empty string.
If I rename the .LNK file to something like 12345.doc.LNK, the powershell script successfully removes the file so I know that the issue is certainly related to the actual filename itself. Is there any sort of UTF, CJK or encoding option I need to configure
here for this to work successfully?
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
AndrewThe article Johan linked has some sample code which seems to address your issue (using Shell.Application instead of WScript.Shell). Here's a modification of your code that uses this technique:
$shellApplication = New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application
Get-ChildItem "$nextdrive\Users\$env:username\AppData\Roaming\microsoft\office\recent" -Filter *.lnk |
ForEach-Object {
try
$shortcut = $shellApplication.Namespace(0).ParseName($_.FullName).GetLink
if ((Test-Path -Path $shortcut.Path) -eq $false -or $shortcut.Path -like '*temporary internet files*' -or $shortcut.Path -like '*temp*')
Remove-Item -LiteralPath $_.FullName
catch
Write-Error -ErrorRecord $_
Alternatively, you can use the IShellLink COM class directly. Looks like someone has already written a .NET wrapper for this:

How substrb works with multibyte characters
suppose X is a 3 byte Korean character.
What is returned by substrb(X,1,1)
I know X in hex is EA B8 B0
But I am getting substrb(X,1,1) = <blank space> ie ASCII 32I am not sure whether you can see the following character: '기'
I found the following:
select dump('기') from dual => Typ=96 Len=3: 234,184,176
select dump(substrb('기',1,1)) from dual => Typ=1 Len=1: 32
I am running this from Oracle SQL Developer on Windows.

checked v$nls_parameters and found following:
NLS_CHARACTERSET = UTF8
NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS = BYTE
NLS_LANGUAGE = AMERICAN
Let me tell you my original problem. I have a valueset that accepts 30 bytes.
It is always possible that susbstrb( ...,1,30) splits a Korean Char in the midway.
resulting an Invalid character at the end as per UTF8 encoding. As far as I know
the first byte of an UTF8 character indicates how many bytes it has.
If substrb() is returning spaces as I mentioned above then it is safe to use in the valueset. But I am not able to find any such behaviour documented.

Any tips, please?First step: read [this excellent introduction into Unicode|http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html], it will give you the basics you need to solve this problem.
How do you input and output those characters? Simply print them to the console? Or write them to a HTML file (since you mention &<something>; notation)?
"?" is normally the result when you convert a String (which is always in UTF-16 encoding in Java) to an encoding that can't represent your characters (ASCII for example). -
Problems with Chinese characters
I have a client experiencing 3 distinct problems with their Chinese-localized Fm files:
The SimSun TTF font used in the source Fm files is "uninstalling" itself. This requires reinstallation of the font on a regular basis (every few days).
The colons used in index markers in the Fm source files are not being parsed as Level1IX, Level2IX, etc. in the RoboHelp project. Instead, they are recognized as colons. In other words, the first level marker in Rh is XXXXXXXX:XXXXXXX:XXXXXXX. The same is true for the semicolons.
The conversion settings for the Chinese project do not allow for mapping to individual CSS elements and classes. This means that all of the formatting is controlled via the supplemental CSS generated from the FrameMaker formatting. IOW, the formatting all uses the class="FM_ definitions.
Has anyone had success working with Chinese characters in a FrameMaker to RoboHelp workflow (either linking or importing)?
Anyone else seen any of these issues in Chinese or any other fonts?
I'm thinking the first two issues are likely due to the TrueType font used, but can't find an Adobe OTF SimSans font to use as a replacement.
However, the lack of mapping capability in the conversion process is a stumper...perhaps due to the double-byte font itself.
Any thoughts or solutions are greatly appreciated by my client (whose deadline passed yesterday!)
-MattI dont think you can print chinese chars at the console on window
to print the character codes to the console use someting like that
char [] chars = request.getParameter("whatever").toCharArray()
for(each chars){
System.out.println((int)chars);
then check if you got the corresponding chinese char -
I previously used Dreamweaver 4 without CSS and then moved onto Dreamweaver 8, again without CSS. I am trialing Dreaweaver CS5 and have updated my site content to <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> from just <HTML>
Extended characters such as e acute which used to appear correctly in earlier versions of Dreamweaver, although they appear correctly in Dreamweaver Live View now appear rather differently in Internet Explorer 8 e.g an e acute appears as A with a tilda followed by a copyright symbol. How can I correct this please?Thanks John,
Since reading your message I discovered that the error occured only where I had copied text with extended characters from another website and pasted it into mine.

Extended keyboard no longer works with some games
I've searched the discussion groups; can't find an answer. Some games that used to work with my Power Mac G5 start up fine, then going into the mission/action/etc. my extended white wired keyboard stops working (no keys work at all). The mouse works, but not the keyboard.
So far the games affected are Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor, Myth II and III, and the new game, Babylon 5: I Found Her. Ghost Recon works fine, just in case someone wants to say its the game.
I've tried resetting PRAM, opening in Safe Mode, plugging the keyboard into the other USB port, and deleting all the game plist files. All these games worked before with the same hardware, but before 10.5. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.Thank for responding. I'm running 10.5.6; haven't "updated" since I know there are problems. I can say for certain that those games worked fine under 10.4.x. Also other games work fine, and I have no access to another keyboard. I'm convinced from its behavior that something in the 10.5.x series is the problem. That's because the keyboard works fine with those games while setting the options, selecting missions (e.g.), but when the map downloads (or other starting function) and it's ready to go, the keyboard stops working (or, more precisely, the game no longer recognizes input from the keyboard). The mouse (connected to the keyboard), works.
