Works in application, not applet, why

connection = new Socket(
InetAddress.getByName("mailbox.oneonta.edu"), 25);
this line works in my application but i get a java.security.AccessControlException when i try to use the code in an applet. can anyone help?

I think there is more then enough great documentation on this very site to help you out. Explaining things like how to sign an applet, or a jar, that are docuemented so your little sister can do it is a waste of time. I'm not being rude at all, I'm trying to get you to use the resources of this site. The java tutorials is a great place to start.

  • How to change heap memory size for general java applications (not applets)

    Hi. I made a java class which manipulates images and I sometimes get an out of memory error when the files are large. In these cases I can run it successfully from the command line using:
    java -Xms32m -Xmx128m myappbut as I run this class from a firefox extension, I can't use this technique.
    Could some one tell me how to set this globally? I've found a lot of info on setting it for applets in the control panel but that's it. I also tried editing my deployment.properties file by adding:
    deployment.javapi.jre.1.6.0_11-b03.args=-Xmx128mbut none of these options seem to work.
    Thanks for any help.

    Also you can use use [JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/jvmti/jvmti.html#tooloptions], with more documentation here. JAVA_TOOLS_OPTIONS is available since 1.5. There is no direct documentation on [_JAVA_OPTIONS|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/2d/flags.html] but was made available since at least 1.3.
    The recent existing forum thread [Java Programming - How to change the default memory limits for java.|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5368323&messageID=10615245&start=36] has a long discussion on the issue.
    You specified you are not using applets, but if you do, I would also suggest you use the next Generation Plug-in (since 1.6.0_10) that allows you specify the max memory in the applet without having to instruct the user how to make the change. See [JAVA_ARGUMENTS|https://jdk6.dev.java.net/plugin2/#JAVA_ARGUMENTS] for applets. Java Webstart uses resources.

  • Repaint in Java application (not Applet)

    Hi,
    I have server application with GUI containing TextArea. On any connection request from client, the application creates a thread which deals with the client request. Once the client request finishes, I want to show the detail of the client which connected to the server in the TextArea. Now I have extended the main server class for the thread class, which deals with the client, and have a method in the main server class which appends string on the textarea. BUT, when thread call that function nothing appears in the TextArea. I have checked that the thread is calling the method correctly, I think I need to repaint the TextArea. How? I am looking for your help. I have tried repaint, it does not work. Appreciate any help in this regard,
    Here is the code.
    Server side.......
    public synchronized void displayMessage( String thismessage) {
         System.out.println("-----> " + thismessage);
         editPan.setEditable(true);
         editPan.append(thismessage + "\n");
    public void run() {
    while(true) {
    try {
    server = new ServerSocket( 5000, 100 );
    while(listening) {
    connection = server.accept();
    if(connection != null) {
    alertDialog cThread = new alertDialog(connection, errorNumber);
    (new Thread(cThread)).start();
    errorNumber++;
    connection = null;
    catch( IOException e ) {
    System.out.println("Exception : " + e.toString() );
    Client Attender Thread class (alertDialog) which extends server class......
    public void run() {
    try {
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()));
    String inputLine = in.readLine();
    System.out.println(" " + dateString + " " + inputLine );
    // super.editPan.append(" Test from alert.. \n");
         super.displayMessage(" " + dateString + " " + inputLine);
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, inputLine, "Alert....", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
    in.close();
    } catch (IOException e) {

    Be careful when calling Swing methods from outside the EventDispatch thread. If you call a swing method from a thread, you should use SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait() or SwingUtilities.invokeLater().
    See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/mini/threads.html for more details.

  • Please help. Start a client application (not applet) from a web page.

    Hi,
    It may be very simple, but I can not find it quickly.
    Anyone can give me an example page that can start an application by click something.
    Thanks very much.

    Hi,
    This works on my PC (of course it's not portable to all clients)
    <HTML>
    <BODY>
    Click here to start notepad
    </BODY>
    </HTML>

  • Help on moving of image across screen(java application,not applet)

    I've searched the entire internet and everything I've found is on java applets and I'm an alien to the differences between an applet and an application.
    This is actually for a java game I'm creating using Eclipse's visual editor and I'm failing miserably.
    What I'm trying to do is to find some java source code that enables me to start an image automatically moving across the screen that only stops when I click on it. I did find some applet codes but when I tried converting it to application code a load of errors popped out.
    Thanks for the help if there's any! I'm getting desperate here because the game's due this friday and I'm stuck at this stage for who knows how long.

    Here is one of the codes I found ,it's not mine but I'm trying to edit it into a java application instead of an applet...Sort of like: ' public class MovingLabels extends JFrame ' or some code that I can copy and paste into another java program.

  • Email Not Working - Verizon does not know why - No Solution.

    I am a FIOS internet customer for a number of years and have stopped receiving email 2 days ago. Verizon is my internet provided and 1and1.com is my email hosting service. There is a problem somewhere between the two companies but eaqch of them points a finger at the other and has no idea when the problem will be fixed because they are waiting for the other to fix it. I beluieve the problem is that some 1and1.com customer is generating a bunch of emails and Verizon has decided to block them by blocking the entire IP address with every user on it. Verizon says it is 1and1's problem (the bad user) and 1and1 says it is Verizon's problem (throwing the baby out with the bath water). Looks like the solution is to dump both of them - but that is a project because you get almost no help when you sign up for service unless you have 1 computer and only fetch email and look at facebook. Both of these companies just try to hide information from their customers while trying to present a "customer oriented" support posture. In the end, they fail to provide the support they say they offer. Two (2) days and counting until they stop pointing fingers and take the 30 seconds to fix the problem for the rest of us users.

    Same thing here -  We've been a Verizon FiOS user for several years after leaving Comcast.  When I initially set-up our personal accounts (AOL), business (Exchange), and side-business account (1and1) everything went fine and worked for years. The yesterday (7 AUG) something happened and my 1and1 account stopped sending, receiving, or syncing e-mail.  1and1 posted on their status site that the issue was with Verizon.  I called Verizon and they said it was now necessary to use the Verizon SMTP server for outgoing mail on ALL my accounts - AOL, Exhange, and 1and1. We made the change on both 1and1 and Exchange, so mail is going out, but now there is an IMAP error.  The Verizon tech support told me they only support POP, until I pointed out they have on-line instructions for both IMAP and POP. Verizon claims nothing was changed in the last day - 1and1 says it is a Verizon problem, and neither one of them seem to have the technical skills to address the problem. While I can still access my mail accounts through their respective web interfaces, it's not ideal.  I'd like all my mail aggregated into my Apple Mail client. This is why the FTC should never allow another telecommunications merger - there's very little competition and customer service is unacceptable.

  • Canon printer into Time Capsule - works with macbook not imac - why?

    Hi all,
    This has been up in the iMac section for a couple of days and no one has replied. I thought I'd post it in here as people with TC's may have come across this and know how to fix it. I originally thought it was an iMac fault - perhaps it still is! Anyway I hope I've not broken any rules by posting it in here, when its already else where, if so apologies in advance.
    I have both an iMac and a MacBook Pro (3 weeks old). I also have a time capsule and have plugged my Canon iP4500 into the USB port on the TC. I had, before getting the macbook, the printer printing wirelessly, with all the functionality that it should have using the airport on my iMac and the TC. Then after an upgrade of OS X, it suddenly stopped working wirelessly. I can not get it to work, no matter what I try - I've reset the printer settings in system prefs, reinstalled the drivers from the Canon web site, re-setting the TC - nothing works.
    However it does work from my MacBook Pro! It has the same OS X version, the same printer drivers downloaded from the same site.
    Obviously I'd like both computers to be able to print wirelessly - not sure what's going on with the iMac.
    All help is very very appreciated.

    I thought I'd search the hard disk and remove all files, drivers et al that I could find relating to the printer. Then reinstalled the up to date driver from the Canon website. (If I knew how / if it possible to post a screen grab of the printer window I would - so I've made a new page on my website - you can see screen grabs at: http://web.me.com/timhydes/Site/CanoniP4500_printerissues.html ).
    This time the printer window pops us as per usual, then in the top half section where it shows the icon, the name of the file it should be printing, but underneath it says "No pages found!", in the status table in the bottom half it says "Printing" (see screen grab 1). If I leave it for a while, it changes the top half to "Printer Ready" and the status menu says "Stopped" (see screen grab 3).
    If I click on hold, then resume I get a new window which says: "Operation Count not be completed" "client-error-not-possible" (see screen grab 2).
    I've checked that there is printer ink, paper et al, and it still prints from my MacBook.
    I wondered it this may shed some light on the issue from those more knowledgeable than my self.
    Many Thanks
    Tim

  • Work book is not displayed

    Hi Gurus,
    I have one work book for a query which I find by using where used list option in the query tool bar. However I am unable to go to it .I put the query technical name in the find to get to that work book but I get the message 'work book is not found.
    why it shows like this?
    any one can give an input in this regard?
    Regards
    Durai

    Hi Durai,
    No it is not at all necessary to assign a workbook to a role , in order to display it .
    But unlike in the case of query , you do not have hierarchy view  where you can see workbook defined on info provider.
    So in order to keep a list of  work book available to authorized users it is assigned to a role.
    Regards

  • Not sure why line break is not working

    Hi all,
    Here is part of my simple Swing application:
    String text1 = "hello";
    String text2 = "world";
    String text3 = text1+"\n"+text2;
    // have also tried (String text3 = text1+"\n\r"+text2;)
    displayField.setText(text3);I supposed that the text3 in the label field (displayField) would display like this:
    hello
    world
    But not, the text3 just displayed in the same line like this instead: helloworld.
    I am not sure why the line break is not working.

    Use HTML for a multiline JLabel.// String text3 = text1+"\n"+text2;
    String text3 = "<html>" + text1 + "<br/>" + text2 + "</html>";db
