Worth Buying Anoth
I bought my MP3 player(Jukebox Zen Xtra) in December '04. I was incredibly satisfied with everything about it, it was amazing.
Unfortunately, it stopped working last month. I hadn't even been using it for half a year and it broke. There's something wrong with the hardware, apparently. I'd e-mailed customer support and they'd verified this for me, and said I could pay $40+ to get it fixed.
I'd jump on that offer if I'd trusted the company. A friend of mine had a different MP3 player from Creative, and it broke as well. And I've read complaints among the boards suggesting that people had had theirs fixed, and it broke again.
I'm not exactly full of money, so I need to know if it's worth fixing/buying another Jukebox Zen Xtra. I'd really love to have it again, but I'm frightened it'll be a waste of money.
Opinions?
It's not so much a case of recharging when it needed it, it's *storing* it with a charge. I was just trying to let you know for the future that this is worth doing (not that you didn't do this in the past)... phew, I think that covered all the options
Anyway, for US$40 get it repaired. The players are generally pretty good.

Is it worth buying another apple battery??
My MacBook Pro is on its second battery. NEITHER made it past about 50 cycles.... The current battery is about 18 months old, has 47 cycles and is giving 20 mins. THe apple store says it needs a new battery. Frankly at this point I am considering a third party battery since I am not impressed with the apple batteries. Does anyone have any feedback on apple batteries Vs third party batteries.

DaveI have had the same issues as you. My first battery was replaced by Apple after it just shut itself off after about 20 mins. It was a recall battery. However after only a year the battery they gave me had pretty much the same problem. This time Apple weren't so helpful and told me it wasn't covered and I had to buy a replacement. My current (third) battery is on 40 cycles and I only get 1:20 mins out of it.
I've owned this MBP since Nov 2006, in comparison my previous Powerbook which I owned from 2003 til 2006 only needed one replacement battery. -
I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. However, it is not backed up, so I need a solution to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive. -
Do I network or buy another printer?

Here's the problem: We have an old iMac from which I poached the printer (Epson USB Stylus Color 880) to go with one of my Beiges. But the user of the iMac (venerable spouse) would like to use a printer occasionally.
The iMac is in a small office across a large, open living area from the printer.
I know nothing (NOTHING) about networking. I don't think stringing ethernet cable up through attic, etc. is worth the trouble and hole-drilling.
So ... is there another way to network the printer to the iMac? An Airport card I think costs more than a new cheap printer. Are there other wireless solutions? If yes, must they have line-of-sight access between iMac and printer? It seems wasteful to me to buy another printer (that would make 3 Macs, 3 printers).

Do you have other reasons to network that would justify the cost? One word of caution about buying a third printer, will you use it enough to keep the ink fresh? Many people have the ink dry out before they get their money's worth out of it.
I am reminded of two stories. One business associate spent $900 to network a $150 printer. The other reasons for networking were never realized. Cheaper to buy another printer. Now networking is much cheaper.
Second story, a lady at Weyerhaeuser in 1988 wanted a to try a Mac for desktop publishing. She had to convince her bosses that not going IBM was justified. The Apple dealer loaned her a system with a laser printer for a one month test. In one week, she had the engineering department newsletter completed, a task that took her one month on their IBM network. In two weeks, she had permision to buy TWO Macs and she said that without any training, she had the second computer unpacked, set up and networked to share the $5,000 Laserwriter. And she was not a computer technician.
A third printer is the simplest. If all printers were HPs, you could share the ink cartridges but the Epson printers do not allow for ink swaps. Wireless is the most elegant when setup with a print server.
My daughter just emails the document to another other computer to get to the printer of choice. If none of your printrs are network printers, you are really networking computers and letting one be the print server. Sounds a lot like email. That is my teenagers approach.

If they were bought via the same iTunes account and they are still available in the store but they don't show under the Purchased link for re-downloading then you can contact iTunes support and see if they can see why they don't show : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
If they are no longer in the store then you will need to copy them from your backup. -
[Solved] Worth buying the book? Linux Kernel Internals
Dear Arch Community,
Yesterday I succesfully installed arch on my old laptop for testing purposes, and it's been great.
But I find that I simply lack a tad of knowledge about the internals (seeing I want to work towards LFS, and I'm comming from xubuntu with i3wm) so I installed Arch.
To go deeper into linux, I figured a book would be another resource, together with the arch wiki.
However, the only book (yes, i'd like a physical book for this one) I'm able to find only handles linux kernel version 2.6. We're at about 3.2/3.3 now.

My question to you is; how much changes are there? Is it worth buying the book, or should I wait a little for the next Linux Kernel Internals book to come out (if there is any planned)

I did it once a few years back on a virtual machine. The most you'll need to know about the kernel is how to configure and compile it. LAMP doesn't really touch the kernel at all. In fact you can run Apache, MySQL, and PHP on a Windows box and the configuration doesn't change all that much.
For most things all you need to know is the kernel is a big blob of code that makes your hardware work. I'm not trying to dissuade you from learning however, that's always a positive thing so if kernel internals are what you're interested in then read up but unless you're doing something really low level or help contribute to the kernel I'm not seeing much practical use. If you do webdev, it may be a better use of your time to learn some more PHP or MySQL instead.
I know i dont have to, but I'd like to know what's happening under the hood when I'm doing my stuff.
The original questions stays :-) Is it worth buying the book if I want to know the internals, since the book only covers 2.6, and we're a tad past version 2.6.

My ipod touch will not play music in my Bowers and Wilkins mini zeppelin nor my Logitech. Yet, it plays in my car. The music can be heard playing in the ipod itself. It is only 2 years old. Should I repair or just buy another? Thanks!
Did it start not working after updating the iPOs on the iPod? SOmetimes updating an iOS breaks compatibility.
You can try the standard fixes:
- Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod. -
Even if an iPod 5 is Stolen , and i buy another new one can, my old iPod5 deletes what ever its was on my iCloud account? and transfer the same thing as my old one to a new one?

I redeemed a gift card of $15 in my Itunes Store. I purchased one book in IBooks of $6.99 now the balance in my iTunes store is $ 7.10. How Do I use this balance to buy another book or music from my Itunes Store It is not using my balance? Whenver I try to make a purchase it is trying to charge my Visa Credit card. My Credit card is no more active. I want to remove my Visa credit card and use Itines gift card fro purchase in Itunes store.

I thought So too but then I went to Itunes Library and try and buy a single song from an album for $1.29. Now my Itunes Gift card balance is $ 7.10 as I mentioned earlier. it still did not let me buy and kept trying billing my Visa card.

Just try putting an old sim in there if you have one or borrow a sim card from someone.

Just want to know why Apple have not made an options menu to remove duplicate photos in iPhoto? I know about downloads you can purchase to delete Dups, but I'm very interested to find out from apple themselves as to why they left this out, to die without knowing this is like having viruses on a pc or waiting for the web page to pop up on windows...

You could have more 5 computers authorized if you ever, for example, reformatted a hard drive or replaced a hard drive without deauthorizing the computer first. You won't lose any data. Mistimp is correct, they can't tell you which computers are authorized. -

Is there a way to play video clips that use adobe flash and if not when are you going to resolve your problem with them ? I won't buy another apple product until you do and I Know I,m not the only one.
Use the search feature and type in Flash and there are like thousands of posts on this.

Thank You!Well, the headphone jack is designed to be compatible with Noise Cancelling headphones from Sony, that uses 5 pins in the pole, however, a regular 3 segments headphones should work without issues... the problem is if you try to use incompatible Headsets (the ones with microphones) since the use an additional segment and it my be located in a different way than what Sony uses.
My advice is, if you are not the most hardcore audiophile, that you get a medium range Bluetooth Headphones. Those will be compatible with your phone...
I have had Altec Lansing BackBeat 906, 903... Plantronics BackBeat 903+, and currently use the BackBeat Go2.
Out of those the Go2 are the best sounding headphones for me (I do not care for tons of bass, so the amount of bass with those is very good)... but the battery is bad, around 3.5 hours. The fit is good, people complain when trying to use as advertised, but I actually found a better way to place them, making a loop around and front of my ears...... Price ~70$
All previous ones had a battery of 7 hours, but the rubber material of the piece around your ear hardens with time and breaks (after a couple of years of use)... the Go2 seems to be better built.
Finally I would recommend to you the Jaybirds Bluebuds X if you are willing to pay 140~160 $.... with excellent battery life, and sound quality.
If you want to go cheaper... Sony's SBH line has plenty of option with good reviews... SBH20 being the cheapest
And if you want to go crazy expensive, Parrot Zik are over 400$ but apparently they are the best all around. I tried them once. -
I will never buy another HP Product Again!
I tried to get some help with an issue that I have been having and could not decide where the issue fit best so I posted it over multiple areas ... NOT to SPAM, but because it did not fit into anyone area ... here it is listed below;
I have a HP Pavilion a6152n PC purchased in Sept. 07, running 32 bit Vista
For a while my web cam worked fine, but now, while I can see the web cam, those on-line using such services any Skype and Yahoo. can NOT.
The audio continues work fine and CAN be heard by the other party ... the problem is with the video.
I even bought a new web cam thinking maybe it was a problem with the cam, but the same problem repeats on THREE different web cams, one microsoft and two Logitech, so if must be some kind of software(hardware) problem with the computer.
I am hoping it is an easy fix ... I just have no idea what it is, Please help!

No solutions from HP ... just my posts locked.
That is NOT the kind of customer support that I deserve and I will be taking my future business to other providers.
My suggestion is that HP have both more help and more respect for its clientele.

After intensive searching for help from HP, I took my HP products off line and bought a Brother AIO and booted it up and guess what....IT WORKED PERFECTLY the first time. It finally scanned to Word and I could edit my files. NEVER could do that wtih the HP G85 AIO which was very expensive and the HP 2400 PhotoJet which was expensive at the time. Not only would HP refuse to help me solve the problems with my AIOs, HP wanted money UPFRONT just to ascertain what might be the problem. I have had my home office setup for consulting but was limited as to what I could do with the HP products but now I am certain that with the Brother, I can do all I need to make clients happy and bring in an income. I, too, will never buy another HP product again. And by the way, Wendy, get the hell off the forum....you are an HP employer and are as useless as your products. You should be solving our problems with your products rather than talking gibberish.
