Worth trading in G5 dual 2.7 for Mac Pro?

Hello all, another "what would you do?" question. I've been offered €1000 for my G5 Dual 2.7, bought in August of 2006, as part exchange for a Mac Pro (1 Xeon 2.8, nVidia 8800). It's actually for home use, but before people say "iMac" or "Mac Mini", they're not what I'm after (I want something easily expandable, customizable, future proof to a degree). Actually, you can put me in the waiting list for the mythical mini tower
I usually like to hang onto my machines until they are really obsolete (I still like my iMac DV), and I've been really happy with it up till now, but as it is one of the dreaded liquid cooled models with a Delphi pump, the impression I get is that it's a matter of time before the green ooze fries my processors.
Should I cash in now? Is there any sort of data as to the likelihood of a coolant leak (defects per total working G5s out there)? Am I paranoid

Yeah, I have the "wrong" liquid cooling system. The Panasonic ones (the more reliable ones) were introduced with the G5 dual core and quad I believe.
I would say that it runs without any bizarre fan behaviour, and the processors usually run around 50C to 60C temperature wise, depending on what they're asked to do. However, I run it on "reduced" power usage, have done for over a year, and when it was on "automatic" some tasks really heated the things up (to over 70C) but not enough to cause any emergency shutdowns or out of control fans. I put it down to the G5 2.7 probably being in reality an overclocked 2.5 or 2.3, so I'm happy to run it at reduced speed. Even Sim City 4 runs fine on it
As for getting one replaced for free if it goes kaputt - I doubt very much that could happen here in Germany, customer service here is a whole world away from what you guys expect Stateside. Must check into statutory rights for goods that fail due to design defects (and it is a defective design IMO).

  • Bootcamp gpu for Mac Pro 1,1

    Hi all
Looking for a good Windows only bootcamp gpu for Mac Pro 1,1.
Anyone one have any ideas for a windows gaming gpu that will work well?
Dont need to get latest if the Mac Pro 1,1 slot is limited, but would like to get a better card for Windows games.
Price is not really a problem, more just dont want to spend more if the Mac Pro 1.1 is slot limited.
    Thanks very much.

What do you want to use the pc vid card for? Gaming?
If you don't need the best of the best you can get, perhaps just grabbing an apple 4870 might work best.
The $350 might be a little steep, but it might be worth it as you can good graphics in not only windows but mac as well.
You could sell your 1900xt to off-set the price. And then just keep the 7300gt just in case.

  • Will the1TB SATA Hard Disk Drive Kit for Mac Pro now in the Mac Store work with my Mac Pro1,1?

Will the 1TB SATA Hard Disk Drive Kit for Mac Pro now in the Mac Store work with my Mac Pro1,1? My details of my Mac Pro is as follows:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro1,1
      Processor Name:          Dual-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          2
      Total Number Of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per processor):          4 MB
      Memory:          6 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.33 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MP11.005C.B08
      SMC Version (system):          1.7f10
      Hardware UUID:          00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2059956

It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.
    WD Caviar Green
    WD Green 2TB
For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.
    WD Caviar Black 1TB 6Gb
    WD Black Caviar 2TB
larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance.  TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.

  • GeForce 7300 GT Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?? G5?

    Hi,
Just found this on the apple store:
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=1643C421&nplm=M A567
"NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro"
Why is it only for mac pro? its PCI express & my g5 is one of the late 2005 models and it has PCI Express so am i wrong in thinking that this should work fine or is it something to do with the new intel architecture?
If i remember correctly i could have chosen this card or a very similar one when i configured my G5.
    Thanks

That card is only for the Mac Pro, as it says.
When you ordered your G5, you had the choice of the nVidia 6600 (or 6600LE), nVidia 7800GT, or the Quadro FX 4500.
The 7800GT that you could have ordered with your G5 is close in performance to the ATi X1900XT that is an option on the Mac Pro. The 7300GT that you're looking at is an entry level card, which the 7800GT definitely is not.
The 7300GT and the X1900XT are both Mac Pro only due to the ROM on the card, which is designed to work with the EFI booting hardware that the Mac Pro uses. The G5s used Open Firmware, which requires a different ROM on the video card. So, even though both your G5 and the Mac Pro are PCI-Express based, these video cards are not compatible.
Now, most PCI-Express cards that you look at for, say, external SATA, will probably work in both the G5 and the Mac Pro. You'd still want to check the specs to be sure, however.
If you're looking for a new video card to replace your (presumably) nVidia 6600, your only real option is the ATi X1900 G5 edition. This is a different card than the X1900XT that's offered for the Mac Pro.

  • ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro dvi hdmi cable

I am sending video signal over a 50FT HDMI To DVI from my Mac Pro (3,1) via ATI 5770 1GB Video Card For Mac Pro (5.0 GT/s) (181062917108) and I cannot get a constant signal to my TV. The signal stays on for a few seconds or several hours or my TV (Samsung) says there is no signal or I get just a gray static screen.
I never had a problem before with my previous video card the 512MB nVidia GeForce 8800GT with a 25ft long cable. Any ideas people?

A cable of about 5 meters (16 ft) can be manufactured to Category 1 specifications easily and inexpensively by using 28 AWG (0.081 mm²) conductors.[114] With better quality construction and materials, including 24 AWG (0.205 mm²) conductors, an HDMI cable can reach lengths of up to 15 meters (49 ft).[114]
    from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
You may need a higher-quality cable or a lower resolution for your display to make this work without an HDMI Repeater.

  • "fire wire" video capture cards for mac pro

....Have Power Mac ver. 10.9.5 system Maverick w/ 4 MB RAM & am trying to locate hardware for:
acquiring "FIRE WIRE" video capture cards for mac pro.... ? Any suggestions....?(Just purchased Adobe CS 5 premium)

Your question doesn't make much sense.
What type of Mac Pro do you have? Is it the new black cylinder or the old style silver tower?
Firewire is built-in to the old models & the new Mac Pros can use Thunderbolt to Firewire converters to capture from Firewire sources.
    Maybe like this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
Many older cameras used Firewire for capturing, but that has been replaced by other connection types. What are you trying to capture from?

  • Reviews for ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro?

There's no review at the Apple Store on this [ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2009 or Early 2008)|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=NDE4NDMx OA]. Googled and found nothing related to the Mac kit. Mostly PC based.
Should I consider this card? I need a spare/replacement graphics card for my Mac Pro (early 2008). The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT card has failed me twice.

    Just came out on barefeats:
    http://www.barefeats.com/nehal14.html
Shows new drivers with 285, also compares 4870.
If you play a lot of games on the windows side, you might also want to consider the 4890. I has recently became flashable (if you're into that kinda thing). It has a lot more leeway to be overclocked. Close to (or if your lucky) hitting the 1 Ghz core clock speed, gives very close comp to the 285, and at fraction of the price. You can get an XFX 4890 on newegg for $195.

  • Accessories for Mac Pro

Hi, guys. I have a problem here. I am looking for something that can protect against dust or something like that. Because my room is really not that clean, which means there's a lot of dust. I am worrying about the Mac Pro that will "eat" some dust. Question is " Where can I buy that kind of accessories for Mac Pro, like clothing or case?"
Thanks a lot. Oh, I forget there is also a LED cinema display that need to be protected

    Clean your room. Nah, J/K
    (no, but seriously...clean your room)

  • Printer wireless for Mac Pro and  I pad.?

Need to get a printer wireless for Mac Pro  also can be use with the IPad  this is possible? Thank  you

Any of the current HP e-Print capable printers support AirPrint capabilities without even having to enable the e-Print stuff that's purely HP.
Also, make sure your exisiting network router at home supports multicast protocols.  The majority of retail routers support this and you won't have issues, but I've run into problems with carrier issued modem/router combo units from Comcast made by Arris that don't support multicast and other protocols and hence, will not allow for the necessary discovery protocols for AirPrint to work across the wired or wireless network.  In cases like that, the fix is to place those units in "bridge mode" and then use your own router behind it that doesn't restrict that capability.  Just FYI.

  • Where can I find internal DVD replacement for Mac Pro 2008?

My optical DVD drive on my Mac Pro (3,1) has been dead for a good long while.
Looking for a cheap replacment.  Just saw OWC stopped carrying them.  Any leads?

For Mac Pro 3,1 and earlier (2008 and previous) you need an IDE/ATA drive like this one:

  • Is it possible for Mac Pro 724 Windows xp to install?

Is it possible for Mac Pro 724 Windows xp to install?

I really don't like any "closed" or sealed technology.
About half way down the page are bare 2.5" enclosures for $50 range

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go
Grief! Yes, that is costly "solution" I looked on Amazon for USB2 for SATA drives and $40.
For that kind of price, MacGurus specializes in some hot-swap FW/USB/eSATA cases so you can use it with multiple drives (giant floppy).

Can a shell for mac pro 13" be used with a mac pro Retina ?
    Thank you.

    No.
The entire enclosure is tuned for both external jack placement, EMI-RFI radiation, airflow, and for cooling. You need exactly the correct shell and fans for the electronics you wish to install in it.
