WPF XBAP Growing Pains

I have a browser based application that uses JavaScript and ActiveX for document scanning.  I wanted to free myself of the ActiveX requirements so I set about converting the application to WPF XAML so I could still deploy it remotely.
After much work I've run across a few problems that have me stumped.
1.  The Page object Loaded event doesn't fire when run from clickonce deployment in I.E.  It fires when debugging in VS using the presentationhost process.  The app is full trust and I put message boxes at the start of the Load and initialized
events but I get nothing.
2.  How do I remove event handlers for components that have gone out of scope?  As I build the component I attach an event handler so that I can notify each active component that the application state has changed which will change the components
behavior.  However if the component go out of scope the main pages event handler list will still have a reference to it and as I understand it it won't be garbage collected.  I thought about creating another event for the components to fire
when they go out of scope but that doesn't feel right to me.

I figured out my problem.  It was insidious.  This is a scanning application that uses twain for interfacing to the scanner devices.  To reduce the dependencies I compiled the data source manager code as managed code into the assembly.
I got no warning or application errors until I build a test application to load the assembly.  While debugging I got a message about the application attempting to called managed code from the LoaderLock.  I searched and found that code in DLLMain
attempting to access a class I had compiled as a managed type.  I commented out DLLMain and all is well again.

  • Growing Pains to the Maximum

    Good Day.
I have OH so many questions, it's hard to know where to start.
For example, i got The Blues - literally and emotionally.
I'm using CS5.5.0 (from the Master Collection).
On a project i just built (my frist, real paying gig), has sseveral areas where my blackest blacks turn a rather annoying grade of blue. This shows up barely on my preview monitor (internal to Premier) and very dramatically on my external monitor(s) (via a Matrox MXO2).  What the hey?!
But more importantly and pressingly, I can't get a good render out of PP.  The timeline looks good and plays back smoothly (mostly, sometimes it stutters in a very bizarre way), and I can OCCASIONALLY get a good h.264 to play back on my computer (after a render).  But more often than not, the render ends up stuttery in the higher motion areas of the movie.  And when I upload that to Vimeo or YouTube, it's so stuttery, it makes me grind my teeth.
My computer should not be the issue (i7 970 w/24BG of RAM, using a nvidia Quadro4000 on a 64bit Win 7 system), but I'm willing to entertain any possibilities.
To Export, I'm going to File>Export Media> then choosing h.264 and I have tried the Vimeo HD preset, the YouTube preset and the HighQuality preset, all to the same basic result -  a stuttery video.  I finally gave up and rendered a WMV and it's still stuttery!  growl!   I then REALLY gave up and tried to render and AVI using my old Cineform 6.0 codec and PP done crashed twice on me.
    Woe is me.
Other problems encountered in this project (and these I'm convinced are growing pains), embedding an AE project into the PP timeline works great - unless you want to draw from multiple AE projects.
I decded to get fancy and so I used an AE comp in my PP sequence.  SWEET!  It was a simple enough graphic animation, it played back IN REAL TIME!  I was overjoyed!
Then, since I know AE better than I know PP (been using AE for a couple years now, and PP only a few weeks), I decided to do my CC in AE.  Wanting to keep my AE projects seperate, I had one project called Anims, and one project called ColorCorrection.  I RightClicked on my file(s) to be CC'd and opened them right up in AE.  No sweat.  Did my do there and Saved the project.  Came back into PP and, Hazzah!  the files were updated with my new CC.  But... horror... my other comps, my Anims, were now OffLine (or Missing Media).  What the hey?!?!  Finally I just went back and rendered the anims out at Cineform files and bypassed the embedded comps (I apologize if I'm not using correct termonology).
ANOTHER issue I encountered was in sweetening my audio: I RightClicked and choose Edit Clip in Adobe Audition.  Worked just like it would if I were using Sony Vegas (which is where I'm coming from)(and FCP too).  However, my problems started when i went back to edit on that same file.  PP (or Audition) started ANOTHER file!  Bugger!  i don't want 2 files. I want one.  So I deleted that new file and decided to just Open the "old" new file in Audition directly.  I did my Noise Reduction and whatever else and Saved that file, but that didn't update in PP.  eh?!?  Same file, no update?!
Truly, I'm passing most of this off as Newb Errors - as i say, Growing Pains.
Any and all advice will be most welcome and appreciated.  I'm almost 50 now and this learning new stuff isn't what it used to be...   ;-)
Thanks very much to all who read this far.  You're a trooper.

Sorry I've been away for a while.  Other deadlines at work and stuff.
I just Updated all my Adobe stuff.  Doesn't seem to have helped most of the issues.  I also updated my graphics driver.  Man... when i was younger, I used to be able to figure this stuff out easier.
Now I just wish I had someone to take this to and say, Please make it work so I don't have to think about that aspect of it.
Anyway, thanks for clueing me in that there's an update. I thought that happened automoatically, but after I told it to look for updates, it found several.
It's a good point, that I didn't give any of my Sequence's tech info.  Sorry about that.  Nor did I give a link so you could see the issues.  Wutadope.
The Sequence is populated with some Canon 7D footage, a Matrox AVI, some ProRes422, a JPG, a few Cineform files (rendered from AE) and some AE comps (for CCing some of the footage).   Most of the footage is 720 or 1080i.
    It's a Matrox 720 29.97 timeline.
I exported a h.264 file using the Vimeo and YouTube templates.
I'm currently uploading a new file to Vimeo right now.  I'll post the link once it's done processing.
    [Edit]  Here's the Vimeo link:
    http://vimeo.com/32024835
I'll do a YouTube video later.
Thanks very much for your answers.  you both get "Helpful" from this ol' boy.   :-)

  • 4G Network - Growing Pains

Verizon is expanding their 700 MHz - 4G network rapidly this year.
      http://news.vzw.com/LTE/Overview.html
The latest rumblings on the web say that the outage was related to an overloaded server which keeps track of users preferences and settings.   It's pretty likely to be related to recent expansions in the network and the number of users.   Verizon's LTE network is a growing organism -  early adopters, like us,  will have to take the good with the bad.   Actually, even those who think they have opted out of new technology are affected -  there is no hiding place really as the internals of the network are clearly going to share a lot of stuff.    The only parameter really is how much we are paying for our adventure.
    Bon voyage.

  • Growing Pains - Move DB to new volume or to secondary server?

    Exchange 2010, SP3 Update Rollup 6; Running Virtually (VMware) Server 2008 R2, SP1
2 servers - CAS, and MB, no DAG
800 Mailboxes, 14 Mailbox Databases.  Largest is 421GB, other sizes are 208GB, 118GB, 114GB all others are under 100GB.
Users in the largest MB DB are experiencing Outlook performance problems:
    - Outlook not responding for 1 to 60 seconds.
    - Outlook stalls or hangs for just a few seconds when drafting a new email.
    - Outlook disconnects and prompts for login credentials.
One thing to mention: - we have recently configured all users to use Non-Cached mode.  While I suspect this to be the cause, we need to retain this setting because we run Outlook on Virtual Desktops and cannot have caching enabled.
I'm just wondering what is the best method to optimize Outlook performance?
    A. Move the largest MB DB to another volume on the same server?
    B. Move the largest MB DB to a new server?
    C. Build a secondary CAS server?
    D. B and C above?
    E. Another suggestion?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Firstly, it’s necessary to figure out whether the issue is related to the limitation on the CAS or MBX.
You can use performance monitor tool to check with this issue:

By the way, in best practice, it’s recommended to run Outlook clients in cached mode

  • Growing Pains.

With the exception of my 8800GTX card and my X-Fi card everything in my system is working well. Drivers for video need a bit of work. Needless to say I am having the same issues that most everyone else is having concerning my X-Fi card and Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Being that I want to be able to equally have decent sound in Vista and XP, I temporarily pulled my X-Fi card and am using the onboard HD sound which seems to work fine. Once Creative gets the fixes in place (March) I will put the card back in and continue. I run a dual boot system at present. XP is going to be my gaming system and I will be using Vista for everything else. It is a minor inconvenience while everyone (not just Creative) works out the kinks. I can't really bash Creative, Nvidia, ATI, AMD, or pretty much anyone else that I become "dedicated" to. Microsoft made HUGE changes when it cooked up Vista and these things take time. I am disappointed that so many folks are stirring up negativity (tinged with a little hate in some cases) in forums for all the major companies. Some of these folks claim they have been customers for years and years...... they should understand that every time Microsoft makes changes..... the end user pays the price. They take it out on the first people they can such as the hardware manufactures that are in a constant game of "catch up" with the Redmond based giant. My only advice to everyone is "chill" a little and wait. No amount of threats and bashing will speed up the process. I think Vista is going to be a good thing (I was ready for a change). I also believe that all the hardware folks like Creative will work out?most of the kinks and we will all be happy again. That is all....... Stockton?

My system has only one major problem on an otherwise seamless Vista install - my Creative card. I don't run one of those fancy-ass g-cards mind ;-) just a regular 7900GTX which will do just fine.
People feel annoyed with Creative for good reason.
Creative have a relati'vely small product line
They've had a good length of time to fix things.
Most people who are po'd have found that on-board is working, so how come Creative (with limited lines) can't do the same?
Peoples' problems aren't consistent, some folks can get their drivers to do *something* and other people can't get jack to work.
    but most importantly,
Their customer service is useless - the left hand of Customer Support doesn't know what the right hand is doing - and its elbow? less said about what it doesn't know, the better.
I agree with the OP that it's good to chill, but no offence geezer, you got the most expensi've Gcard on the planet, so you obviously don't mind throwing your hard-earned at hardware - other people go out and spend ?00 a year ago in the hope that they've made a wise investment, only to have it ripped out from them by a company which seems complacent at best.
It's not like it's the first time for Creative, either. Windows XP, for some people, had very similar problems, in so much as the soundcard was the last thing working, and only after a struggle.
Next time I upgrade, I'll not be buying a creative product, and so far that's 2* mp3 players *5. speakers and numerous soundcards. I just hope there's a valid alternati've.Message Edited by TrimFlinders on 0-3-200709:2 PM

  • Growing pains are no excuse for unhelpful help [1]

I have received the following error message from ENCORE CS3 when attempting a build of a Blu-ray project:
Blu-ray object: audience address DRESS REHEARSAL, Error: invalid operation", Code 19, NOTE primary video stream must be consistent within playlist.
The HELP index has no reference to ERRORs. Like many other Adobe end users, I question Adobe's claim to producing 'professional' software when it is unsyuted to the use intended. I cite as but one reason typical Adobe error messages like this, which are all but meaningless to all but Adobe's own techno-geeks without proper context and explanation.
Might I have these please so I can get on with my work?
    Norman Frizzle

My double posting was strictly an error. I don't know what kind of a history I can have double posting since to my best recollection this is only my second posting.
I appreciate the referral to ADOBE for a bug report and I shall follow it up. My complaint, however, was meant to be seen by other end users. If ADOBE is still getting away with opaque error messages that explain nothing, it is probably because end users are intimidated by the double-speak.
Patting my way in the dark because I can't decipher what is ultimately meaningless has cost me a great deal of time. If there's a solution, Adobe should tell us. Even if there isn't a solution, Adobe should be honest enough to be up front about it. It is really REALLY annoying to do two or three lengthy and ultimately futile re-compressions with different parameters, groping my way because ADOBE's answer is not a solution, and certainly by no sensible person's estimation 'help'. It's just another problem passing itself off as something it is not.
    THAT is indefensible.

  • Debugger exception on WPF loading

    Hello,
I am looking for a little help with this.  I have a WPF browser form that I am trying to load.  I run the debugger, but when it gets to the page I get the following:
An exception of type 'System.Security.SecurityException' occurred in System.Data.dll but was not handled in user code
Additional information: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
If there is a handler for this exception, the program may be safely continued.
The call stack for that shows this:
    > HomeInventoryWebForms.exe!HomeInventoryWebForms.frmMoviesAdd.dgMTVAddFormat_Window_Loaded(object sender, System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs e) Line 70 C#
So here is the code behind the form:
    public frmMoviesAdd()
    InitializeComponent();
    this.Loaded += dgMTVAddFormat_Window_Loaded;
    this.Loaded += dgMTVAddGenre_Window_Loaded;

Now I am trying to bind this all to a checked box datagrid in the WPF with code that looks like this:
    <Label x:Name="lblMTVAddFormat" Style="{StaticResource Label Style}" Content="Formats" Margin="335,74,0,0" Width="97"/>
    <DataGrid x:Name="dgMTVAddFormat" Margin="437,74,10,265" AutoGenerateColumns="False">

    <DataGridCheckBoxColumn Binding="{Binding fBool}" />
    <DataGridTextColumn Binding="{Binding Path='FormatName'}" />
    </DataGrid.Columns>
    </DataGrid>
This is all running from a local disk, connected to a remote developer database.  I have no build errors or anything when I go to the debug, hitting continue sends it to another break for the exact same reason.  Which loops out of the program and
shuts down the debugger.  Could anyone point me in the direction to go since it is throwing this error on debug?
    Michael R. Mastro II

The error message should be pretty self-explanatory; your application is not permitted to access to the database due to security reasons.
You must deploy your application as a full trust application for it to be able to to this. Please refer to the following two links for more information about how to do this:

  • Switch to (i)Mac a pain?

    Hi,
Despite the widespread belief that a Mac provides the ultimate userfriendly experience, I found this blog posted by Mac lovers.
    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/01/25/common-mistakes-made-by-new-mac-users/7
Although the blog was perhaps not intended to illustrate that switchers may experience significant switching pains, it does seem to convey that kind of a message. Former PC users don't get it right when it comes to handling a Mac. It seems this happens over and over and over again as suggested by the 136 posts.
My question: Would it be possible to start putting together a list of "How to ... on a PC" and match it with "How to ... on a Mac"?
I know the question is perhaps too broad for the iMac forum, but I will be using an iMac soon and have never had a mac before. So, hopefully that will help keeping the topic here. Also, I do not know where to post it otherwise. I made the same recommendation on the above blog (post 135), but without success. Given the expertise of Mac and (former) PC-users on the current forum, this may be not a bad place to deal with the topic.
I noticed some answers to my question have been provided in the insightful "From PC to Mac" posting. With the new post I would like to add to those suggestions and make it a more systematic effort. Ideally, we will end up with a list that is a great resource for the many switchers we see these days.

    Hi Wspiff;
You've heard some good advice, but you've read also things that are a bit biased. But if you do not mind...
"Despite the widespread belief that a Mac provides the ultimate userfriendly experience, I found this blog posted by Mac lovers.
Obviously, from my point of view the Mac OS is the ultimate OS and Macs are well thought machines. My G4 below, is from 1999 and still today a PC is not as well made as my G4 is. That says it all.
I have been using Macs for a while, even if I really believe your experience with the Mac will be 1000 times better than with a PC, I must acknowledge the fact that you are used to working on a PC. So, yes, there will be growing pains. It comes in many shapes and forms. It comes because you expect the same thing on a Mac as you would on a PC. They are different, different things will happen. It comes in this forum, for instance, when I say to you press command-q to quit, and there is no "command" key in the keyboard.
    And, it continues.
It is kind of difficult for some Mac users, principally someone who has used almost exclusively the Mac to tell you how different the Mac is. It is not different for us!
I do commend you for doing what you are doing. Reading and asking is the right thing to do. You will see that you will find the right people here. Most eager to help.
So it will be hard initially, it has to be. However, you will be switching from windows to one of the most powerful operating systems there is.
Certainly all the pain will be recompensed. Handsomely

  • Editing speed still painful..

hello list, back after a long absence touring australia and italy, yes I know.. it's tough..
anyway, so I'm back in the studio doing vocal sessions and editing, now on logic 7.2, still on a dual G5 2 gig.
maybe I was hoping for something out of the ordinary, but the editing speed is still a complete nightmare since logic 7 and it is now officially starting to drive me nuts. like many others, I have written to logic feedback about this but seemingly to no avail. what I am talking about btw is the fact that cutting, grabbing region starts/end to drag, fading and generally any kind of interaction with the arrange window is just too plain unresponsive for anyone that could call themselves a skilled editor. if you are one you will know what I mean. it may only be a fraction of a second to register that you have clicked on something, but this is just not good enough, because if you are like me and your hands move fast using a combination of mousing and key commands, you wind up being 3 or 4 edits ahead of logic before you realise that the interface has not reacted in time and you have accidentally dragged a region to who knows where or engaged an unwanted loop on something.
    grr.
the annoying thing is that it was never this way on logic 6 and earlier, even on slow machines, even on OS9. interface responsiveness was close to immediate, I could work at full speed. now I find myself cursing, taking a deep breath and consciously slowing myself down lest I accidentally have to command-z to undo yet another botched cut... all this after a holiday..
rant almost over.. have noticed people are on intel coded logic now. any fast guys out there that know what I am talking about that are on intel yet, is there any sign of an improvement?? ie, getting back the responsiveness we had pre 7? it would be good if that were the case, but I'm not hopeful because it doesn't seem to be anything to do with a faster CPU or faster graphics (just got a new G5 with a bigger/faster graphics card here, no difference).
back to logic feedback I go...

    Hey tbird,
I was wondering what happened to you - now I know. Welcome back.
I know what you mean about this point. I actually think there have been improvements in this area since 7.0, but still... it is a drag (no pun intended).
Starting with a new session it seems like response is 60 ms for and edit in the arrange... but those numbers aren't proven. Just a guess.
High numbers of events, big plugins and high number of objects in the arrange really make this worse. You have mentioned it could be because of the contextual cursor's status. It very well could be. I think you know Logic well enough to know how the plugs and events impact editing.
New features, new OS, new processor, new company, more plugs, it seems like the growing pains are still hitting users. 7.2 does seem like (aside from the UniBin) a good step towards higher number of events, more stable, reliable, less bugs in general. Has been very solid for me, less problems. Also just keeping everything up to date, Templates, objects really helps. Yes, I have had to adapt my workflow several ways to accomodate Logic. Not just with editing... I think most of us know how to make a ducker... And as far as development for Logic I am really more interested in reliability, responsiveness, handling of plugs - while making Logic work optimally on OS X... 7.2 is, for me, a big improvement in that regard. I spend way too much time moving things around, maintaining (insert G4 joke) - I am not convinced it is my computer.
So tbird - here's another yea vote as this is a step back.
    Cheers,
    J

As a test, I bought a WMA song file from WalMart to see if its Digital Rights Management was compatible with Muvo. There was no problem with the correct elapsed time showing. I will also test a file from Napster and add its license details here.
Here is something else I noticed - the differences in
the license for the two types of WMA files:
The one from WalMart - which works fine with the
    elapsed time on the MuVo:
This file can be played an unlimited number of times
Collaborati've play for this file is not allowed
This file can be burned 0 more times<<<
This file can be synchronized an unlimited number of
    times
The license for this file can be backed up <<<
    For the one from netlibrary.com
This file can be played until 4/9/2005
Collaborati've play for this file is not allowed
    This file cannot be burned
This file can be synchronized 3 more times until
    4/9/2005
The license for this file cannot be backed up<<<<
I have been able to copy WMA with DRM audiobook files to my TX FM, but the elapsed time doesn't change with either play or fast forward. The file is from Netlibrary.com which supplies audiobooks to public libraries. The file plays, but the display stays all zeroes.
I have been sending information and getting replies and suggestions from both Netlibrary support and Creative technical support with no solution. I have the latest firmware and everything else. I have the problem on both Windows XP and Windows 2000 computers. I have downloaded several files, but none of them show elapsed time. I suspect it is something to do with the DRM, because I can play a preview file from Netlibrary - without DRM - with no problem. I also have no problem with other files copied over - from Audible, from CDs, etc.Message Edited by alex20850 on 03-30-2005 07:54 PMMessage Edited by alex20850 on 03-30-2005 08:4 PM

I'm primarily using my TX FM for netlibrary.com audiobooks and also get all zeros on the display.
I've been steadily complaining to netlibrary and my local library about problems/inconveniences, itcertainly is experiencing growing pains; we're the ones getting the pain, though!
I'll post here if I find a (legal) resolution to this.
What firmware version do you have? I have .2.04 and I see that .3.03 is available for download. I've read here that there are problems with .3 with volume limiting and I'm hesitant to change. I do notice that one of the listed fixes is:
Updates the elapsed time displayed during navigation within a long recorded track
so, maybe this is the answer?

  • I'm not sure whether to buy Flash CS 5.5 or CS 3. Help please?

    Hello everybody.
I've finally decided to buy Flash, but I'm hesitating on which version. I have the chance to purchase either CS5.5 or CS3 for about the same price from a local shop that still had CS3 in stock.
I've heard CS5.5 is bug-infested and very different from previous versions, which makes me think it will be harder for me to learn to use it (I'm just a hobbyist and rely mostly on online tutorials to learn to make simple little actionscript games). But it is the newest version, so I'm assuming I'd have the best support and maybe new features I might grow to like once the growing pains are over?
On the other hand, I've heard CS3 was pretty good and stable, but I'm worried that it being much older, it might violently disagree with running in an Windows 7 machine. (64bit?)
And it seems bad to buy older software when you can buy new one for the same price, even if the old one has a better rep, at least from what I've heard.
So now that I'm completely confused and unsure which I should get, I ask you all, if you are knowledgeable in both of those applications, could you please tell me whether my assumptions are correct or not, and which of the two you would recommend?
Particularly, if I get CS5.5, would it be easy to learn to use it? Would you say the UI is friendly? Is it truly as picky and crashy as I've heard it was?
And most importantly, if I get CS5.5, would I be able to use old actionscript in it? Like if I follow a tutorial for something that worked in Flash CS2, will it still work in CS5.5? (It was either actionscript 2 or 3, if I remember well.)
Or would any tutorials for anything older than CS5.5 be worthless?
I've been reading reviews and looking in various places, but none of those are as good as hearing first hand the experience of a real person who isn't trying to sell you something. So please, help me make my choice.
Thank you so much in advance. I really appreciate any help any of you can give me!

    @ Rob:
Thank you! That's very helpful. I'll get 5.5.
How bad would you say the UI is compared to CS2? I had managed to figure out how to more or less do what I needed with CS2, so I'm hoping it's not a lot worse. :-S
    @ Ned:
    Thank you.
I was under the impression Adobe's help was horrible no matter what...? Hopefully I'm wrong? The only time I needed to contact them about Photoshop, it was such a catastrophe that I never used Adobe help again. Hopefully they're better with flash.

  • Can't connect to volume of shared iMac but used to be able to

I'm really hoping someone can help me with this as I've been struggling with it since my upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. I run OS X 10.5.2 (all updated, etc.) on two machines - an Intel Macbook and iMac, with an airport extreme base station (updated) as the router. Both are using the same account names, but have different computer names (B's Macbook, B's iMac, etc.). So, attached to the iMac is an external hard drive connected via FW800, split into two volumes (Time Machine, Video Library). When I first tried to share these after the upgrade to 10.5.0 I had various permission errors with that "Unknown" user account. That seems to have been all cleared up, and in fact the two aforementioned volumes (Time Machine, Video Library) are now completely new and on a new FW drive. Problem is, I can't connect to the "Video Library" from the Macbook, even though sharing is allowed and I can connect to the the "Time Machine" volume fine. It shows up in the finder sidebar, under the Macbook, but when I try to connect I get this..
the operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Video Library" cannot be found
When I view the iMac via the Samba share listed in the finder (since Windows Sharing is turned on via the iMac - and I tried turning this off, doesn't change anything) I see 8 volumes labeled video library, video library-1, video library-2, etc. all the way through video library-7. Now, I click on these and get the same error. But I am 99% sure that Leopard is confused and can't find the correct link to the Video Library because all of these dead links are still floating around somewhere, but I don't know how to clear it out and reset. In fact, I used to have the same problem sharing the Time Machine volume, but during one replacement of the hard drive, I changed the volume name from "Time Machine Drive" to just "Time Machine" and it of course started working fine, I can access the drive without problems, etc.
So, after all of that explaining, it really comes down to the fact that something seems to be stuck in Leopard thinking that the link to the "Video Library" volume is broken or invalid, Smaba sees it as 8 volumes (btw all other shared volumes have only one entry in the Samba view), and everything is confused. The working solution would be to rename the Video Library volume, and connect. Problem is I have over 1,000 movies/tv shows/etc. in iTunes on that drive and if I change the volume name all those links will get screwed up. Any other ideas? I've spotlight searched for video library-# to look for a preference file somewhere that is trying to remember the link, but to no effect. I am sure it has to do with the growing pains associated with the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and the user IDs, etc. Repair permissions won't work since it's an external drive. Any thoughts?
    Thanks so much in advance.

Try unmounting the volume on your iMac using Disk Utility. Then mount it again. You may need to reboot the laptop or relaunch its Finder process (using the Force Quit window) after remounting the drive on your iMac. Remember that no process may be accessing any files on the drive you plan to unmount, or the unmount will fail. Unmounting and remounting an external drive on my iMac made it become visible on my MacBook Pro after it had disappeared.

  • ITunes won't open in Leopard

The first time I loaded Leopard in my Powerbook G4, I did not do a clean install and iTunes wouldn't open. So I tried loading a new version of iTunes and it still wouldn't work. So then I tried a clean install and added back applications and content through Time Machine, but iTunes still wouldn't work. So I finally tried throwing all of my music files in the trash and that still didn't work. All I get is a dialog box with "application iTunes quit unexpectedly...".

Have read a bunch of the different issues and the consistency seems to be: (1) Leopard install; (2) Itunes 7.5 install; (3) possible new Ipod issues (Classic, etc.)...I've experienced all of the issues: (1) spinning ball with opening Itunes; (2) Itunes either not recognizing Ipods (Classic and old) or not allowing any transfer because it's either not authorized or because it's so slow it stalls; (3) network drop offs; (4) Itunes going on permanent sleep...have tried to repair permissions, reinstall Itunes and have been "faithful" about all of the upgrades and still have problems...Read about Leopard not recognizing hubs so I've disconnected hubs and have gone straight into the USBs on the computer...still no fixes...the poor fix is a "Zune with a pc" which is the equivalent of losing the status as a "true believer"...won't go this route but hope the fix is in so when others question why I'm an Apple person with all of the bugginess, I can stay it was just "growing pains"....

  • New iPod touch - How to make it a Palm Pilot

OK. My new iPod Touch (16GB) is on order (ordered on day 1) - I have my Mobile Me account up and running and my iCal and my Mail accounts are synced.
My reason for buying the new iPod touch is to replace my Palm Pilot (Tungsten E). I was able to export/import 6 years worth of Palm data to iCal – now I need to be able to use iCal on the iPod touch to see/edit my daily schedules on the road – and to sync and see them on several Macs at home and in the studio.
I just watched the new Apple video about the new iPod touch – and, frankly, it came across as a 1) a teen-age game machine, 2) a movie player, and 3) a music box. Nothing in the video promo spoke to iCal on a Touch – or using the iPod touch as a business tool – other than Safari and email.
There are a million new apps available, but I don’t have time to test them all. This is what I need:
    1) A iPod Touch version of Docs To Go. I want to make a document (file- text –letter) on my Mac (in Word, for example) – and then download it to the touch to read (and edit) on the road – and then re-sync changes made on the Touch with Mobile Me and my Macs.
    2) To Do lists that sync between Mobile Me – my Macs and the Touch – with the ability to make/edit the To Do from the Mac or the Touch.
    3) Search capability to find events, To-Dos, and documents (such as a letter) in the iPod Touch. That is a great feature of the Palm Pilot – I can see when I was last in a city with a simple search – or find a calendar entry with a customer’s name – even from several years ago.
    And:
    4) a Forum that addresses how to use the iPod Touch as a business tool – rather than as a game/music/video machine – essentially how to replace a BlackBerry or a Palm Pilot with and iPod Touch.
I have ZERO AT&T coverage where I live and work – so the iPhone is a no go for me. I will keep my Verizon cell phone and get rid of the Palm Pilot – if I can make the Touch behave as a tool rather than as a toy.
So – What APPS should I get ready to use?

    Hi,
I have done the transition from a Palm Treo to the iPod Touch. As has been said the Apps are not as mature as with the Palm. You do need to be creative. I went with OmniFocus, both the ipod app and the desktop app. The desktop app will sync with iCal but I feel it should be the master. Not the cheapest route but very solid.
Direct MS Word compatibility I haven't seen yet. It will be there I am sure. The Notes app works fine for writing and you can email notes to yourself and copy the text out to what ever program you choose. No cut Copy Paste yet either so real word processing is not a reality. Docs to Go was pretty good.
There is CSV touch that will load any CSV file. Excel sheets. Also the idb Datamaster pro. Worth looking at. It is a database system that can import and export again in csv.
I have PocketMoney to record financials. It will sync through QIF files with Quicken. I say sync but it really just imports and exports QIF files. Takes some creative handleing not to end up with duplictae transactions. I figured out a work around and it saves keeping the paper around till I get to my computer.
File Magnet is really great. Drag anything to it and it will be loaded for viewing ( only) on the Touch.
The sync with iCal, Email and Contacts is excellent. I use this system daily for all my appointments and work schedules.
I don't bother with the games but it is cool to listen to music in the car with one device.
Having real internet in your hand instead of the klunky Treo browser is so much better. Safari is functional enough to do my online banking.
iFlix is really functional for Netflix. My Weather for weather forcast. Gives local animated radar.
So.. It is a new platform. It will have growing pains but it is functional and innovative.
Browse the App Store. Most are cheap enough that you can try without costing too much. The reviews are mostly helpful if you weed through the jokers.
I carry mine all the time. It finds internet all over without me doing anything. Battery life is acceptable for the most part. Just listening to music it lasts plenty long. Wifi and constant browsing or apps will run it down quicker. Consider that like watching a video. I use it in my car with a TransPod FM adapter. It charges the battery while it is playing. Works out fine that way. I get a full day of use and then the night always on without any worries. The ride to work charges it up enough.
Hope this helps. I love mine.
    Greg

  • How do I get my iChat to work with Audio/Video?

I have tried to read through the other posts on this topic to figure out what to do. I am quickly in over my head with changing configurations on ports and routers. It should not be this difficult. Until I bought this computer less than a week ago, I had used Windows machines which I would be able to figure out fairly quickly. I thought Apples were supposed to be easier to use? I have been working on this issue for two days now. I even called Apple twice. The first guy said what I was asking was beyond his knowledge, and I should log into this discussion board for an answer to my question. I told him I could have done that without paying for both Apple and Pro Care.
The second guy worked with me at least and put me on hold several times to research. He had me try different things before telling me that I must not have enough bandwith on my ISP. He told me to call my ISP provider and ask them what the bandwith was. When I asked him what bandwith I needed to iChat A/V, he said he could not tell me what it was. If it is a bandwith issue, shouldn't the screen say so? Instead it tells me that I failed to accept the invitation that I initiated, or failed to accept the invitation after I pressed the accept button.
I know the MBPs are new, and there will be growing pains, but I expected a little more assistence from Apple. I am working dilligently to learn how to use my new Mac and am getting completly frustrated with this A/V Chat problem. I even downloaded AIM on my MBP to see if that fixed the problem. The same thing happens. Either I initiate the video chat and the other person accepts, which causes my screen to say that I failed to accept the invitation. Or they initiate the invitation and once I accept my screen freezes saying that I failed to accept the invitation.
From the looks of the other posts, this does not seem to be an Intel chip issue. Since AIM did not work either, it must not be an iChat issue.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi Kambini,
I think you have quoted function of the Linksys rather than the model number.
Is it one of the ones listed on this page http://portforward.com/routers.htm
