Write character to files++

Hello,
In the past there was a Vi "Write Characters to File++1" which was returning the actual file name. It seems that this function does not exist anymore !

It was replaced by Write to Text File. You can still access the old VI, though. It's in "LabVIEW 8.x\vi.lib\Utility\file.llb."
I can see how it might be difficult to get the filename that was selected if you leave Write to Text file unwired so the user is prompted. The easiest way around that is to put a File Dialog before you write to the file so that you can see what file was selected.

  • Write characters to file gives a file not found error

It appears that it generates the error at the open file sub vi, but I have no problem with write to spreadsheet file which uses the same sub vi.

    LV 2013

Sorry to answer with some questions..
Which version of LV are you using?
Does the file that you attempt to write to, exist? Do you specify a filename in your vi?
Otherwise,(in LV7) you will be prompted for a file. If it does not exist, the subvi will create it. If it exists, it will ask if you want to overwrite it.
Experiment with the "Write Character to File" vi by simply connecting a string to it... and run it.
BTW, your file must be closed when you attempt to write to it, otherwise the error is actually from Windows.
If you want to append to an existing file (add to it without deleting the original contents), then wire a TRUE to "Append to file". Of course, your file path should be filled in with an appropriate path & filename. In t
his case, you will not be prompted for a filename. However, you can experiment without providing (wiring) a path & filename, let LV prompt you.
Try this as a starting point. You should not get an error. If you still do, can you write what the error message is?

  • How to write newline character to file using bytes along with content

    Hi All,
I need to write headers into the file using byte[]. I am creating the strings of header which will form the different rows in the file. I am new to java and would like to know how to embed new line character so that when the byte[] is written to file headers come in different rows.
    like
    hrd1:abcd
    hdr2:1234
when i embed \n and \r in string and do getBytes() and write it to file, some boxes are written in the file and everything comes into single line.
Please advice me the correct way .
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers!!
    Puneet

not sure about it, but i was always told that "\r\n" meant "new line" on "lots of documents" whereas "\n" only or "\r" only were meaningless on some type of documents

  • Rewite file without dialog invoked, using write character.vi

Hi Is there anyone who knows the answer to my problem?
    The problem is that:-
I have a file that is generated by write lvm.vi but some of the headers are wrongly written, even though I have used graph's property to correct plotnames.
So I attempt to read lvm file and correct the headers and rewrite the old file. It works but the problem is that dialog is invoked when false bit is applied to write character.vi 's  append to file? (new file : F). Is there a way to rewite the file without having dialog invoked?
    Your help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    regards
    Clement

    Hi Dennis
    Thanks
But there's one I do not understand about lvm files.
In the attached, there are three files namely daq1, modified_daq1 and res1 files and simple  read lvm file function.
In daq1.lvm, it is saved by default, it reads ok,  Enable the plot legend and see names. In it there are 16 channels and in "comment" cell, it holds AI=16 & RES=0.
I saved this value in comment where another subvi will read it later for correct naming of the plots in the graph. This comment has nothing to do with it. Total of channels is 16
then in res1, it does not read ok. X_Values and others are added to plot names. In it, AI=16 & RES=7. Total of channel is 23
To test it, I modified the daq1 file  and saved as modified_daq1.lvm. In it,  I changed AI=15 & RES=1. total of Channels remained same. Then i changed Dev0/ai15 to Dev0/res0.
    Then It reads correctly.
the res1.lvm don't reveal any errors when i studied on it. There's not much any differences except total of channels.
    regards,
    Clement

  • Labview 9.0: Error 1 occurred at Write To Measurement File

    Hi
Our University recently got the latest version of Labview (9.0 32-bit) which I installed today. The labview file I am using (my6008v6.vi)  used to work fine with the older version (8.5 i think). My write-to-file VI is enabled at certain time intervals in order to log data. As soon as it is enabled for the second time I get the following error:
Error 1 occurred at Write To Measurement File->Copy of murray6008v6.vi
    Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW:  An input parameter is invalid. For example if the input is a path, the path might contain a character not allowed by the OS such as ? or @.
    =========================
NI-488:  Command requires GPIB Controller to be Controller-In-Charge.
I made a simple file (simplew2f.vi) to test this, with a button which I can press to enable/disable the writing of data. I am able to start writing data and then stop writing data but as soon as I try resume the writing the same error occurs.
This confuses me greatly since this wasn't a problem using the old version and my Labview knowledge is minimal. Any help would be appreciated.

So, which VI are you having problems with?  Sounds like both...
Okay... - sigh - where to start....
Well..  Let's start with a few comments.
    1.  Try to stay away from the Express VI.  I know the Marketing guys at NI will not like me for saying so, but I am saying so.  They are a nice marketing feature that Grumpy Old Men like myself do not like.   They make it easy to write quick code..  And I will limit my comments to that.  (It's not your fault.. )
    2.  The wiring on your diagram is not clear or easy to read.  Yes, with additional time and double-clicking each wire I can tell where they are going.  However, a rule of thumb, alway wire from Left to Right.  Never right to left.  And do not run the wires under objects, even the ones you are wiring to.
    3.  simplew2f.vi:  You should put a small delay in the While Loop.  I ran it three times and it wrote to the files without error.  And yes, I used LV2009.
    4.  my6008v6.vi:  Avoid wiring from the top of the While Loop.  At frist, it looked like the data was coming out of the While Loop because the wires went to the left side of all the index node of the Index Array function.
You should set your Browse Option for the file path to "Files or Folders" and "New or existing".  I did that and I was not getting the error message you described.

  • Write to Text File.vi Output file all but first line start with tab

The attached PNG shows the code used to build up concatenated strings into a string array for the first four lines, thence to a string Array, to Spreadsheet String.vi and, finally, the use of Write to Text File.vi
The lower right corner shows the result loaded into a spreadsheet. Note the 3 blank entries marked by a filled red rectangle. Examination of hidden characters shows there is a tab at the beginning of lines 2, 3 and 4.
There is no tab shown in the code. How do those tabs get there? How do I stop them?
I have tried with the option "Convert EOL" both on and off with no difference.
The Help states that an OS-dependent EOL character is appended to each line. I can't imagine the Windows EOL character includes a tab.
    Solved!

I am still puzzled as to why those additional tabs were added by Array to Spreadsheet String.  I'm holding in my hand a printout of an old LabVIEW 8 program with that construction, which is known to work properly.
Makes complete sense when you look at your code.  You build a string, including an end-of-line character, and put that string into an array.  Then, when you run it through Array to Spreadsheet String, it puts a tab after every array element, and new line at the end of each row in the array.  The first element of your array contains a new line but Array to Spreadsheet String doesn't know about it; it still inserts a tab between that array element and the next one, giving you the tabs.

Are you sure that the input file (e.g. "Downloads/filetoberead.CSV") is in UTF-8 character set? You can also check it using some text editor having a view in hex mode. If each Cyrillic character in your input file occupies a single byte (instead of two), then the file is not in UTF-8. Most probably it is in Cyrillic for Windows (CP1251).
If this is the case, you should modify the line
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in,"UTF-8"));toBufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in,"windows-1251"));Dimitar

  • Can you write an avi file without using imaq

Just curious if anybody has tried to write an avi file without using imaq vi's? So far I have only found sketchy info on the file format and am looking for some help on the file structure etc. Any references or example avi files with explanations of format would be most helpfull. Thanks in advance -

    Absolutely.......
An AVI video file is actually structured in the same way as most Windows media files or RIFF files as they are generically known, thus the description below is applicable to for example WAV files etc.
Thus the file always begins with the four byte code RIFF and continues to use this generic four byte coding known as FOURCC, four-character code or FCC throughout.
There are then specific requirements for each different media content and the sections that must be included to define a valid file structure of the desired meadia type.
Each section or 'CHUNK' is defined by an FCC (RIFF being the first) with facility to include additional FCC's as required. The FCC is followed by a length descriptor and then the data (just for fun the odd CHUNK does not quite fit this very general overview). These chunks then align to even word boundries so padding zeros are often inserted at the end of a CHUNK to make it all nice and neat.
It is a requirement that software that does not recognise an additional custom CHUNK should ignore it, this is very easy as all you have to do is use the length descriptor to 'jump' over the CHUNK concerned.
The following is an example from the 'CLOCK.AVI' found on windows computers for a number of years...
    RIFFjB AVI LISTΠhdrlavih8
Here you can see the RIFF followed by a four byte length descriptor (4 Gigabytes), followed by various sub CHUNKS in this example the sub CHUNK is an AVI (note that it is actually 'AVI ' to conform to the FCC).
So the CHUNK structure looks a bit like this:-
    RIFF ('AVI '
    LIST ('hdrl'
    'avih'()
    LIST ('strl'
    'strh'()
    'strf'()
    'strd'()
    'strn'()
    LIST ('movi'
    {SubChunk | LIST ('rec '
    SubChunk1
    SubChunk2
    ['idx1']
For more information on all this you need to read the RIFF specification documentation on the MSDN website or on the MSDN Technet materials. Most of the stuff you will immediately locate will refer to the AVI file format as that is where most of the recent effort has been focused.

  • Block and character special files

What is the difference in semantics between block and character special files on Mac OS X?
In the olden days, character special files were intended for serial character-oriented devices such as teletypes, printers, modems etc. not capable of seeking and block special files were intended for seekable block-oriented devices such as winchester disks etc.
But nowadays, Apple uses /dev/rdisk* as the raw (unbuffered) hard disk device, and it is a character special file, and it is seekable. /dev/disk* on the other hand, is buffered, slower, and a block character special file.
Is there still any semantic difference at any O.S. level between these two kinds of special files, or is it all entirely up to the driver designer and it only effectively provides us with one more bit for the device number?

    Hi,
Is there still any semantic difference at any O.S. level between these two kinds of special files
As you write, a block device is bufferd by OS, while a character device is not bufferd by OS (=raw device).
In the olden days, character special files were intended for serial character-oriented devices
Even in olden days, I guess a seekable mass storage had both block and character devices; the latter is for partitioning, disk diagnose, backup, etc. Only block devices can be mounted.
Serial (un-seekable) device can only be a character device, I guess.

  • Write to spreadsheet file.vi is storing data in one row only.

The 8 points of data is going into one column in the spreadsheet. In the "Write to spreadsheet file string.vi" how do I write the 8 points to one row for each cycle?
I got this VI from NI's web a couple of years ago and forgot how to modify this part. I usume it is within the write file.vi.
    Thank you in advance

I just reread your original post and the way the "Write to Spreadsheet File.vi" that ships with LV works by default is to put 1D arrays into rows. I read your post backwards and told you how to put the data in a column. Sorry.
In any case, perhaps you need to make sure the Transpose input ISN'T true, and that the delimiter IS a tab.

  • How can I read, millions of records and write as *.csv file

I have to return some set of columns values(based on current date) from the database (could be million of record also) The dbms_output can accomodate only 20000 records. (I am retrieving thru a procedure using cursor).
I should write these values to a file with extn .csv (comma separated file) I thought of using a utl_file. But I heard there is some restriction on the number of records even in utl_file.
If so, what is the restriction. Is there any other way I can achive it? (BLOB or CLOB ??).
Please help me in solving this problem.
I have to write to .csv file, the values from the cursor I have concatinated with "," and now its returning the value to the screen (using dbms_output, temporarily) I have to redirect the output to .csv
and the .csv should be in some physical directory and I have to upload(ftp) the file from the directory to the website.
    Please help me out.

    Jimmy,
Make sure that utl_file is properly installed, make sure that the utl_file_dir parameter is set in the init.ora file and that the database has been re-started so that it will take effect, make sure that you have sufficient privileges granted directly, not through roles, including privileges to the file and directory that you are trying to write to, add the exception block below to your procedure to narrow down the source of the exception, then test again. If you still get an error, please post a cut and paste of the exact code that you run and any messages that you received.
