Writing file in applet

My applet needs to write a temp file and then open it based on user demand. Obviously I can't write it to their file system. I want to write it to a folder specified on my webserver in the same location as my applet. What's the best way to achieve this? Would you send the outputstream to a servlet and have it write it to that location? Is there an alternative to that?
Just looking for suggestions,
Thanks

No, File objects can only refer to local files.
Better to stick with http, otherwise coordination is going to be a big problem. When the server gets the upload it's going to need access to session info etc..
You can use a "PUT" transaction type, and the rarely used doPut() method of a servlet. Just open a connection, cast it to HttpURLConnection, set method type post and add a Conent-length header (the most anoying requirement).
Bear security in mind, you don't want you server flooded.

  • Writing files from applet

We ran into a problem with our Applet. We need to produce a
report (it is prefferable to save it as a text file or HTML).
We tried to use DataOuputStream to write out to a text file. It
works on a local machine but we get a security exception when
applet is on the server. Is there a way around the security?
We want our report file in the same directory where Applet comes
from and we thought that it should not be a problem to write to
the same host where applet comes from but it seems to be more
    complicated than that.

    Hi gaotdw,
Simply have your applet do a showDocument(url), and have a java
servlet receive your request, create your document (in pdf, gif,
or whatever) and send it back. When your applet invokes
showDocument it does it within the context of the browser. Thus
if you build a pdf document dynamically and send out the
appropriate mime type, your browser will prompt the user to save
    or open your pdf file.
    Please look at this url:
    http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/signedobj/signtool/ind
I hope this will help you out.

  • How to create a small HTML-file in Applet

What i wan't to do is as follows:
    1. In an applet i create a string containing a small HTML-file. Its contents depends on what the user chose in the applet.
    2. then i wan't to redirect the browser to that HTML-file. appletcontext.showDocument(URL) could be used.
The problem is how can i create an URL to a string which is only in memory.
Writing the string to a file and then creating URL to it poses problems, as we all know, writing files from applets is difficult.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Here is how you do it:
    1) use the JSObject (you may have to import
    netscape.javascript.JSObject depending on the
version of your SDK) to open a window with an empty
URL, a title , and a _blank or _self
    target.
    2) use the JSObject document.write to write the HTML
string to the window that you opened in #1 above
    3) close the document.
If you need further assistance, post your code and I
can modify it for you or if you want, I can whip up a
small demo applet for you to try.
    ;o)
V.V.Thanks!! Your post has been very helpful. One question though, I suppose the client has to have a java-plug-in installed in his/her web-browser, is that right?

I'm writing an self-signed applet that runs on browser.
Luckily there is no error shown in the java console when i run the applet.
however, i can't store information to a file which is placed at the server(where my applet is placed).
The biggest problem is there is NO ERROR message shown in the java console...

  • Error reading/writing file message when opening garageband and/or files

I've been recently getting this message when I open garageband and files
    "Error reading/writing file\U201Ccom.apple.garageband.cs\U201D
I've been in and repaired disk permissions and all that it says it is all fine, reinstall garageband and message still comes up, weird.
not only is garageband being a nuisance, Mac OS X 10.6.2 is being a pain when shutting down telling me to restart the computer. This only happened since upgrading to 10.6. No one as yet knows this promble so I'm gonna have to ring apple and see what is going on here.
and also my other problem is that mac doesn't seem as snappy anymore I noticed this before upgrading to 10.6 and made no difference when "cleanly" installing 10.6. I get a colour wheel popping up and i'm having to wait with simple tasks. iMac only 2 years old.

i give up with this discussion forum no no one knows anything

  • File Upload applet not opening in Query Mode

File Upload Applet is opening in Query Mode in Siebel 7.5, where as in Siebel 7.8 its not opening in Query Mode.
Should anything be changed in CFG? or siebel restricted this?

    Hi,
There is a property called "Auto Query Mode" in the applet. Check whether this has been set to "New Query" in 7.5. If so the applet will be opening in Query Mode automatically. If this property is blank, in 7.8, the applet will not be opening in Query mode. Check and let me know.

  • Keep getting message pop up "Error reading/writing file  "com.apple.logic.pro.cs": Logical end-of-file reached during read operation," and "The Preferences are not loaded completely. Save them to "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" anyway?" Using Logic pro 8. ???

Logic froze while I was working on something so I forced quit.  Now every time I open LOGIC a message pops up that says:
    "Error reading/writing file
    “com.apple.logic.pro.cs”:
Logical end-of-file reached during read operation."
The only button option is cancel so I press it and another message appears that says:
"The Preferences are not loaded completely.
Do not save them, as you would overwrite the Preferences file with incomplete data."
Then when i close logic a box appears saying:
"The Preferences are not loaded completely.
    Save them to "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" anyway?"
There are 3 button options to press; ok, cancel or dont save.
I press "don’t save" cuz I don't want to ruin anything.
I found a discussion located here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9564253#9564253 that says if I delete the file "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" it will resolve the problem.  If I do this will I loose or mess anything up at all, automation, saved channel strips customizations, saved effects, synth, or ultrabeat customizations etc? Or especially will I loose any work I've done?  I have hundreds pieces of music files I've created.  I'm scared to mess anything up with all the hours and months of work I've done.  Is there anyway to fix this without loosing anything?  I'm using Logic Pro 8.
    Thank you

You can safely delete this file - its the preference file for control surface settings - you haven't said whether you're actually using a control surface or not, if so, you will have to set it up again. A new file will be created when you fire Logic up again, but of course it will contain default settings. If you have a complicated control surface setup, remember to keep a backup copy somewhere in case any future problems arise.
Other than that, you really have nothing to be scared about - hopefully your problem is as simple as that and there isn't an underlying problem (a corrupt hard drive, for example). You seem concerned about losing work, so I guess you want to think about backing that up on a regular basis too. If you're saving your projects to your system drive, do get an external one for this. And also check that you have plent of free space on your system drive - you need to keep about a quarter or third of it free for your OS and programs to run properly (some temporarily stored files can be quite large).

  • Move to new computer, get "An error occurred while reading files or writing files to disc. The disc

I tried to move my PE6 install and catalog to a new computer.  It was on a Dell Windows XP machine, and I moved it to a Toshiba Windows 7 (64 bit) machine.  I have always kept my photo files on an external hard drive.  My photo library is 50GB, 10,000 files.  Here is what I did.
Copied the original PE6 install file to the Toshiba.  Installed but didn’t activate it.
Copied the entire My Catalog folder to the proper Windows 7 location.
Plugged the external drive into the Toshiba.  Made sure the same drive letter as before (E).
Fired up PE6 on Toshiba.  Looked good in Organizer.  Everything seemed to be there, but I didn't try to make changes at that point.
Deactivated PE6 on the Dell.  Activated on the Toshiba.
Then I realized that it is not right.  I can edit Keywords and Rating stars on the pics, but not dates, captions or notes.  I get “An error occurred while reading files or writing files to disc. The disc may be full or there may be problems with the source media.”
Only a fraction of the external drive is in use.
I can access the files on the external drive with another app (Windows Photo Viewer).
I tried Reconnect All Missing Files.  Somewhat ambiguously, it says “There are no files to reconnect.”
In the properties in the Organizer for each picture are the proper file names and paths.  Folder view works fine in Organizer.
I can put new files in the same external drive directories, import them into PE6, then edit them normally.
What is the easiest way to get Organizer properly connected to my files?  I suppose I could reimport all the pics on the new machine, but I assume I'd lose some of my metadata.  So that is out of the question.
    Thanks,
    Bill

Are you sure that file paths are correct? I say this because under XP they would have originally pointed to Documents & Settings/My Pictures whereas on W7 it will be User/Pictures, albeit you are using an external hd.
Take a look at this knowledge base note on the correct procedure for back-up and restore.
I think writing metadata to files for such a large catalog will be a thankless task.

  • Playing an audio file from applet

    Hi friends,
I have a problem to be solved .
    Please help me.
I have to play an audio file from applet. When the applet loads it shold start playing .There is a progress bar in the applet it shold alsomove corresponding to that.
How can i do that.Give me an idea.
    I know nothing about jmf.
    I am using j2sdk1.4,windows 2000 server.

    Andrew,
Forgive my naivety, but i struggle with JAVA! I am desperately trying to create a JAVA plugin to SERVOY and have to date been successful with a few things. Record, Playback, convert to .spx.
I am really struggling with implementing a rewind and fastforward function of the type you have. I thought it would be easy, but it appears not.
At the bottom is the complete code from my class that is called by the servoy plugin wrapper,
i had thought that adding some simple jump 500 ms would have been easy in something like this:
    public AudioStream js_FastForward (AudioStream as) throws IOException {
!!! Line or two here to move the play head forward !!!
         AudioPlayer.player.start(as);
         return as;
Can you give me any pointers to how i code that fast forward bit.
    many thanks
    David

  • Report Subscription - Failure writing file - The network path was not found.

I have several subscriptins which have been working fine.
All suddenly stopped with same error - Failure writing file - The network path was not found.
The subscriptions write to a number of different network paths, all of which exist and are accessible.

Is this a repeating failure or one time occurrence?  If it's a one time occurrence it could have been a short network outage.  If repeating look and ensure the user that the subscription is using to write the files still has the appropriate permissions,
is enabled, not locked, etc.  Other things to possibly consider would be flushing the dns cache on the server.  It's possible a firewall rule could have been put in place that would block the ability to access said location as well.  The best
thing you can do is start by asking "what has changed".

If you are surfing the web, and you click a link to a page that you don't know, you don't want some unknown Applet to start and be allowed access to your local harddrive or printer.
Therefore, Applets ran by the browser, run in a so-called "sandbox". Read about it.
The solution is to "sign" the applet's jar.
