Wrong permission in /usr folder

A few days ago, I noticed that I'm able to see folder /usr by opening Macintosh HD in finder. Obviously (?) it has the wrong permissions ...
I entered terminal and fixed it by:
sudo chmod 755 /usr
It is OK (drwxr-xr-x ) now, but it is still viewable in finder ... I noticed that other hidden folders permissions are drwxr-xr-x@ (with a @ at the end). How do I set this bit ?????

sudo chmod +R 755 /usr
Did you do "+R" or "-R"? I'm not sure what +R would do, but if you did -R, that would change the permissions of everything inside /usr, in which case you've hosed your system. You could try repairing permissions with Disk Utility, though I'm not sure whether that would work in this case. If it doesn't, you're probably going to have to reinstall the system.

  • Wrong Dates in Sent Folder

After doing a clean install of 10.5 and importing all of my mail messages from my .mac account, I noticed that many of the messages in my sent folder had the wrong date. Apparently they were marked with the date on which I first synchronized my 10.5 Mail with my .mac account. I've since tried to rebuild that folder, and when I do that, those problematic messages show up as sent "Today" at the time I rebuilt, even though many of them are nearly a year old. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I've read several threads regarding problems with the sent folder, but none with this specific date problem.
    Thanks.
    One more thing...
All sent message show up with the correct date when I access the sent folder online through .mac.
Message was edited by: James Casey1

I tried several experiments and noticed that if you move the messages in "sent messages" with wrong dates to another folder (for example to the "inbox") then they get back to their correct date.
Apparently rebuilding mail boxes at this point doesn't fix anything, as if you move the messages into "sent messages" again then the date gets wrong again.
Funny enough, when the message is back into "sent messages" and appears there with the wrong date, if you make a text search FROM THE INBOX on all folders in the search results these messages will appear as located in "sent messages" with THE RIGHT DATE!!! Doing the same search when you are in "sent messages" will show the message with the wrong date!!!
So I am now sure there is BIG BUG in Mail about this.
So unless Apple fix this, I guess the only way is to put all the messages from your "sent messages" with wrong dates in a folder where they appear with the correct date, save or export your "sent messages" folder messages, delete entirely your "sent messages" folder, and reload all you "sent messages" again.
However I have no safe procedure for this and it won't prevent the bug to reoccur later on...

  • Deleted ~usr folder and now i have a dead mdd.... need help

So i was impatiently going through and cleaning up my mdd and for some reason seen the ~usr folder on my home page and had never seen it before, opened it up didnt look important, checked info and it seemed small so it couldnt be much??? Deleted it and soon after saw the side effects and problems it caused. MAchine wouldnt shut down right and when i tried to boot i always get stuck at the grey screen with apple logo and the wheel... So i need some advice on how to get this machine running again?
1: i can to target disk mode and install panther (the only osx disks i currently have) Or i was told that the best thing would be to get a retail copy of the current os ( 10.4) and do an archive and install...
1 question, if i do the archive and install will i loose everything on the disk, ie. folders, files and programs?
2nd ?, if i do target disk mode will i be able to access the HD and maybe save some of the files or apps?
Whats the best thing to do at this point?
    Thanks

If it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.

    Hi,
Please try to setting Folder Permissions on Web Publish, and then deploy it with Web Deploy, as far as I know, if we do that, Web Deploy will use the SetAcl operation to change permissions. Please have a look at the article below.

  • Getting a list of users and permission from a folder

I run this command to get a a list of users and permission from a folder
    $project_folder = "\\servername\foldername"
    get-acl $project_folder | %{ $_.Access  } | ft -property IdentityReference, AccessControlType, FileSystemRights > folder.csv.
This only lists information for 1 folder.
If i have multiple folders how should the code be modified?

this is the code i am looking for
     $project_folder
    = "\\servername\foldername\foldername1"
    get-acl $project_folder | %{ $_.Access  } | ft -property IdentityReference, AccessControlType,
    FileSystemRights > folder.csv.
I  run this code and this gives me the information for only the folder 'foldername1'.
Ex. i need a list of users who have permmission in \\servername\foldername\foldername2.
i run the code and it gives me the permissions and list of users in foldername2.
    This is the issue
IF there are multiple folders \\servername\foldername\foldername2, \\servername\foldername\foldername1,
i need to run the code each time for 1 folder.
is there a command where i can combine the path of these 2 or more folders and export
    it to csv
    Ex.  $project_folder
    = "\\servername\foldername\foldername1",
    "\\servername\foldername\foldername2"
    get-acl $project_folder | %{ $_.Access  } | ft -property IdentityReference, AccessControlType,
    FileSystemRights > folder.csv.
This will give me the list of users and the type of access they have in foldername1 and
    foldername2

  • Error: Insufficient permission on the folder in which the format is to be s

    Hi Experts,
I have two users A and B. Now A is sharing a OLAP worksheet with B and getting following error.
oracle.dss.d4o.common.D4OException: D4O-1209 Insufficient permission on the folder in which the format is to be saved.
oracle.dss.bicontext.BINoPermissionException: BIB-14102 User lacks sufficient privileges to perform this operation.
oracle.dss.bicontext.BINoPermissionException: BIB-14695 Insufficient privileges for folder.
The worksheet has a calculated member which is also shared. B has access to the shared folder of A. Is there anything which I missed?
If I do not include the shared member in the worksheet and share the worksheet and member then B can open the worksheet and can edit the worksheet to include the calc member.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • I want to use icacls to deny a user's 'delete' permission on some folder

when I use  icacls D:\test /deny user:D  the user can not access the folder, and the user do not have any permissions. I want to only deny the "delete" permission on this folder. what should  I do ?

    Hi,
Firstly, you could use use icacls D:\test /grant user:F to grant the user “full control” permissons on the folder, then use  icacls D:\test /deny user:D to only deny the "delete" permission on this folder.

  • 10.4.6 Combo update shows a USR folder on my HD

    Hello.
Have a problem whereby I have just installed the 10.4.6 combo update.
When computer restarted, there was a new USR folder within the main HD.
if I delete this, the mac wont start (I have restored)
Why has this file appeared, and how can I make it go away again?

    Glenn,
Odds are some information got corrupted somehow during the update that made it so the USR didn't think it had to be invisible anymore. The easiest way to fix this would be to use a program such as FileBuddy 7 to easily hide it again.

Hi, I had updated folder on my hard drive wich was wrongly replaced with a folder from my external drive. I m not using time machine. How can i recover that updated folder? (it was done on 3-5-12)

If the folder was replaced, it was written over.
Nothing short of forensic data recovery (probably involving taking the drive apart to scan the discs seperately) is going to recover anything (if indeed even that will).

  • How do I re-hide the USR folder which appeared out of no where?

    Hi all
for some reason my UNIX usr folder has become visible on my Macintosh HD. I know how import this folder is so I want it hidden again. I'm not sure what has caused it to appear, I haven't installed anything like Cocktail because I don't believe in messing around with such things - especially when I don't know what I am doing.
I have tried the Terminal command to show and the hide the invisible items in the Finder, but the USR file remains visible.
Can someone help me to re-hide this folder? I'm not a techie, and don't know terminal that well, but am happy to type in the commands as they stated.
    Please help if you can
    Jordy

    Hi there
    I tried the terminal command:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
And then False to hide them again, but that didn't work.
I don't currently have the developer tools installed, but I could do if needs be?
When typing the command: ls -l /usr/bin/SetFile /usr/bin/GetFileInfo
    I get the following:
ls: /usr/bin/GetFileInfo: No such file or directory
ls: /usr/bin/SetFile: No such file or directory
I'm guessing that's because I don't have developer tools installed?
Thanks for your help thus far

  • Wrong recipient in 'Sent' folder

    Hello,
since some weeks Apples Mail.app shows some strange behavior:
When I sent a mail and then open the SENT Mail folder, it shows wrong recipients in the recipients column. When I open the sent Mail in the SENT box, the wrong recipients are shown too, even though the mail is received by the right person.
I tried to repair the access rights with disc utilitiy - but without any change of this strange behavior.
Is there something wrong with an index or spotlight?
    I need some help, please.
    Tanks and best regards,
    Robert

    Hello David Gimeno Gost,
it is a POP account! But I allready solved the problem. I searched a little bit in the discussions and I found a tip you gave another user with similar problem:
After checking/repairing the volume, I deleted the envelope index. When I restarted MAIL, everything is corrected now. The SENT folder shows the right recipients now.
    Thanks a lot!

  • Set all users write permission on a folder

    Greetings,
I have an application which creates a Data folder in the root directory of the C drive on installation and subfolders inside that folder when it first starts up.  It is installed on Windows XP or Vista using an administrator account.  However, I need all of the users on that computer to be able to read and write to the Data folder and its subfolders.  The default folder permissions when created are read-only for other users.
I have tried using the Set Permissions VI, but although I am setting all permissions (b111111111), and subsequent reads of those permissions return the same number, the actual permissions are not affected as far as I can tell by getting the properties of the folder in Windows Explorer.  I have read the help regarding the Set Permissions VI, and it sounds like the only thing it can actually do is set the write permission of the User (not all users), and Windows ignores the rest.
Can anyone advise me of the easiest way to set the write permissions for all users for a folder programmatically?  Even running something inside a CIN would be fine if the code was provided here.
    Thanks much!
    -Joe

Thanks smercurio_fc!  The CACLS solution in your linked post worked perfectly for me for Windows XP, and it turns out that in Vista all Authenticated Users (i.e. everyone but Guest) get modify priviledges by default on (sub)folders which are created by administrators in the root directory, so I don't need to do anything there.
    This forum rocks.

  • Cant repair permission on usr/bin/lppasswd

Hi, when I run on a daily permission check on my imac. I came across with a error:
Sudo permission usr/bin/lppasswd has been modified and wont be repaired.
Now, i dont remember modifying anything, how can I fix this ?

you shouldn't have done that. this is a system file which the system might need for some printing operations. I would suggest you get it back. you can reinstall it from the leopard install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>. and don't ever delete any system files. you might hose the system. why would you think it was ok to do?!
