WRT54G Closes inactive port on 10 minutes

Hi, my WRT54G (V8.00.2) closes a tcp port if inactive for 10 minutes.
This is a problem for FTP, as it uses port 21 as a command port, and a high port as a transfer port. So if the transfer takes longer than 10 minutes, it fails, as the router is closing the command port (21) on 10 minutes.
The work around is to use a keep alive feature on the ftp client, so it keep sending NOOP commands to keep the port open. But I would like the router not to close the port.
Is there a way to change this timeout configuration?
Shouldn't the router be more ftp friendly?
Thanks in advance,
Eduardo

Hi Ricewind,
Thanks and I found the MTU setting. I just don't see how this would relate to the 10 minutes timeout based on its description:
MTU is the Maximum Transmission Unit. It specifies the largest packet size permitted for Internet transmission. Keep the default setting, Auto, to have the Router select the best MTU for your Internet connection. To specify a MTU size, select Manual, and enter the value desired (default is 1400).  You should leave this value in the 1200 to 1500 range.
I will try it anyway and see what happens.
Thanks,
Eduardo

  • RV042 - How to close all ports and leave some specific open

    Hello everybody,
Here is the scenario of my network:
    - A company with 20 branches in Rio de Janeiro area. The main servers are in a datacenter located in downtown.
Each branch has a RV042 router with firmware version 1.3.12.19-tm (Feb 13 2009 13:03:21) installed.
All users in this network have a proxy configuration pointing to proxy.[blah].com.br port 3128.
The HTTP/HTTPS traffic should go through proxy only.
The network settings for every RV042 are similar:
    RV042 LAN IP = 172.16.***.1 /24.
    RV042 WAN IP = 192.***.***.*** /30.
    Network Setting Status
    LAN IP: 172.16.***.1 /24
    WAN1 IP: 192.168.***.*** /30
    WAN2 IP: Not used
    Mode: Router
    DNS(WAN1): 208.67.220.220 / 208.67.222.222 [OpenDNS Service]
    DNS(WAN2): Not used
    Firewall Setting Status
    SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection): On
    DoS (Denial of Service): On
    Block WAN Request: On
Firewall -> Access Rules Section: Please see below
    The problem:
    - Some "smart" users were caught using Ultrasurf application, which changes the proxy settings to go through port 9666 or even 443.
In other machines, we've found some black proxies [for example: 212.46.27.142 port 8080].
    My objective:
    - To close all ports in Firewall -> Access Rules section and grant permission only to some selected and specified ports.
    - To redirect all HTTP/HTTPS connections to go to proxy's IP address only.
Gentlemen, could you please tell me which Access Rules can I set in these RV042s in order to block and prevent these users to continue abusing this network? Is there anything else am I missing?
P.S.: The users who were caught using Ultrasurf were fired. ;-)
    I gladly appreciate your comments.
    Thanks in advance,
    Luciano

    Hello Randy,
Thanks for your answer. But let me tell you better. In this scenario, all machines in LAN can use RDP and VNC normally.
I want to block everything else, just to avoid users to try using other ports.
You might want to try Deny all traffic out, except for the PC's you need  to use RDP, and then only allow 80, and 443 to the proxy.[blah].com.br  port 3128. This way all web traffic would have to pass through that  proxy, otherwise it would be denied.
In this network, we use VNC to provide remote IT support to users in these branches.
They use RDP to access some servers in the datacenter.
I think that the rule below line 6 is letting users go and traverse the proxy.
Priority    Policy Name    Enable    Action    Service        Source Iface    Source    Destination        Time    Day
    *                                                  Allow    All Traffic [1]             LAN     Any        Any                  Always
How can I modify this access rule? It seems it cannot be altered.
    Thanks in advance,
    Luciano

  • Cannot close Serial port socket on Server 2008, Can on XP

As per the subject - running the same code using the same hardware, but different OS (Server 2008 Std. NOT XP Pro)will not work!
It's all very odd... The port opens fine but will not close using SerialPort.close(), thereby causing problems the next time the port is opened (PortInUseException).
Has anyone here experienced this before? Any suggestions as to where the problem may lie?
Edited by: wizzkidd on Jan 19, 2010 7:46 AM - More descriptive title

I have a serial port monitor open on both machines; it shows that the connection is still open (on Server 2008), even after the following is run:
         public void closePort() {
              if (serialPort != null) {
                   serialPort.close();
                   Console.print("Closed port: "       + "(" + commPort + ")");
              else {
                   Console.print("Port is still open: " + "(" + commPort + ")");
}However, on XP, the connection is closed properly.
Upon failure to close the port, the code has already been run, however, no exception is thrown.

  • Close open ports

Troubleshooting my client network invasion and researched some information via my macbook.  The network is Windows7.
Issue at hand is all of the established connections from my computer to the outside world via ports 50000 through 65000.  Wondering how to close said ports.

    Much Ado about nothing.
What is outgoing on those ports?
Doesn't really matter. It is incoming that you have to worry about and if they were Invaded then their router is not setup correctly. Has nothing to do with the computers behind the router. Not unless there are BOTs installed on those computer. And in that case closing ports won't help.
    EDIT:
Go to ShieldsUP.com and do a scan.

  • How to close inactive cursors

We have a new application on the database and its using lots of cursor. Is there a way to find and close inactive cursors?
    version 10.2.0.4

    thanks

To get the inactive sessions with more than 10 open cursors you'd issue
    select sid, serial#
      from v$session
    where sid in (select sid
                     from v$open_cursor
                   group by sid
                   having count (*) > 10)
    and status = 'INACTIVE';

  • Router closes TCP connection after 30 minutes

I have recently replaced my D-Link DIR-100 router with a Cisco Linksys RV042, but unfortunately there seems to be a problem with it.
I have an external TCP connection coming in to a local service, and I therefore set up the router to redirect the incoming connection for the given port to the local PC hosting the service. This worked perfectly. I also opened the Firewall access rules to allow all data from WAN2 to be propagated through. This also worked just fine, and I can connect from the internet to the local PC, just like I could with my old router. Unfortunately this is where the simularities stop. When there is no communication on the TCP connection for more than 30 minutes then the router closes the connection automatically. This is NOT what I want. I only communicate on the TCP connection very rarely, but I do not want it closed automatically - at least not after just 30 minutes.
I did some research on line and it appears that there in some routers are a TCP connection timeout, which in the router I read about, defaulted to 1 day. This would be OK. I experimented and found that if there is communication every 30 minutes then it is not close the connection, but if there is 50minutes between communication then it closes the connection.
As I read that this timeout has to do with security I experimented with the firewall and found the following:
    1. Disabling the entire router firewall fixes the problem !!!
    2. Disabling just DoS has no effect (problem still exists)
    3. Disabling SPI means I cannot connect at all !!! (new and much worse problem)
    4. Disabling Block WAN Requests has no effect (problem still exists)
Is there a way to solve this problem without disabling the entire firewall, as that is not what I want to do. I have the system set up for Dual WAN (load balancing), and I only want to allow connections to a handful of ports on the one WAN, and block the other WAN entirely.
P.S. I was referred to the Cisco Small Business Support Community by the Cisco Home community, so I hope this is the right place.

    Hi Ddb101,
This is a limitation (or feature depending on how you look at it) of the iPhone/iPod touch. 30 minutes after the device locks (usually 5 minutes of inactivity) the network turns off completely to save battery life. You can either turn autolock off globally, or some programs (mine for instance see: http://ootunes.com/app/ ) have an option that disables sleep while the app is running so the stream will keep playing... until your battery dies Only problem is with the screen on the battery actually dies even faster!
Finally, if the device is connected to a constant power source, it shouldn't actually time out. So if you have a way to plug it in, it shouldn't quit after 30 minutes on you...
    hope that helps,
also, since there's a link to my site up there, and I sell the app, I should tell you that I might get money if you go to the page and end up buying my app...

  • Auto Close Inactive Applications

I was wondering if this is possible either using a system preference or via an application. I have a very bad habit of leaving every application I use open. I will be working and by midday, I have Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Firefox, Word, Excel, Transmit, BBEdit, Fireworks, Outlook and more all open simultaneously. Many for no reason at all, just mainly because I never close them after using them for a bit. So my question is, does anyone know if there's a way to have the system shut down these programs maybe after 5 minutes of inactivity and with no documents currently open? My system boots programs quickly, so I don't care if I have to re-open something...however, it does bog down when I have everything open all at once. If there was a preference or an application that could do this for me on the fly, it would be an amazing help since I move so quickly through everything and have developed a habit of not closing them. Since most programs don't keep windows open nowadays, it makes it easy to not pay attention to what all you currently have open on a mac. Any ideas would be much approciated...assuming it's not to tell me to stop being lazy and close my apps myself, lol.
    Thanks!
    Wil

The problem is that I am working in a fast paced environment where I may be working on a website design, video, print graphics, excel spreadsheets, coding and more all in the same day. So my intent is not to stop using a program because, if it was, then yes I would click the red X. I have no problem quitting a program if I truly am done with it. But say I'm working in illustrator on a graphic and I finish with one graphic and am ready to move on to another but am being interrupted to start work on a video. I'm not expecting to stop work in illustrator to do this video, but 2 hours later I realize that Illustrator has been sitting open unnecessarily while I've been using Final Cut. I intended to go back and use it, but never got around to it. This is a simplified explanation of the problem, but imagine that happening with 20 different projects during the day where you wind up with 20+ programs open because you're moving so fast trying to keep up with everything.
Granted I should not be in this scenario because there should be more than one person to do all these different projects, but that's not a luxury I have right now. For now, it's me and I have to handle it all on a whim with little to no heads up on what's going to come across my desk in a day. So an app that monitors my open programs and closes the items that are not being used doesn't seem like an unreasonable necessity for someone in my scenario. I understand it may not be a common need, but it seems like a fairly simple concept that could be useful for other people besides myself, if for no other reason then to keep as much memory free on the system as possible.
My thought is it would be an app which can tell if you've used a program over some amount of time (of your choosing) and if not, it closes the program for you. I could also see the option of only closing programs where no documents are open so that if you're reading from a Word Doc for example but working in Final Cut or something else, it wouldn't just shut the program down on you. And also an option to remove certain programs from the 'close list' that you may need to remain open at all times. I think a lot of people could find use for a program that could do these things for you. Seems like it would be a good tool to manage your system freeing up the user to worry about other things.

  • ASCII closes COM port randomly during long periods of unsolicited response monitoring

I have lots of serial ASCII objects monitoring for unsolicited responses (every two seconds, from 20 different COM ports).  Randomly, sometimes a few times a day, sometimes no problem for 2-3 days....but the ASCII object somehow lets the COM ports close or it loses contact with the COM port occasionally.  All I have to do is go into edit mode and "touch" the properties....such as changing the "Retry Attempts" setting and the communication returns.
There are no alarms logged when this happens!
    Ed

    Ryan,
I currently use 6 Ascii objects from 6 ports and plan to use 2 more.  Unsolicited data arrives every two minutes (as measured by the sending end).  I have a button on the panel for each object that I can press to send a request to the sending end.  Each of the senders connects to a digi portserver II and is delivered to lookout via an ethernet connection (as a virtual com port).  The ethernet connection is routed over various paths including micowave, which could have an occasional traffic interupting fade. One or more of the Ascii objects may fail to respond at any time, but several days may pass without a problem.  When a failure is noticed, you can usually select the properties for that object and the problem clears.  If instead, you send a request to any of the other Ascii objects , Lookout may just hang (permanet hour glass).   When a failure is noticed, if Lookout is then turned off and the offending port is monitored with hyperterminal, the data from the sending port is on time and correctly formatted.  The help file has a section "Ascii alarm and error messages" with a section named "Early temination when parsing the response frame".  There are a bunch of reasons listed there as to why the Ascii object might not function properly.  I've tried everything that I can think of to make this work reliably.  Any ideas?  See the link for response format information. http://jrcamenzind.googlepages.com/lookout

  • Write data to serial port every two minutes

    Hi,
I use VISA-Write to write data to serial port. I want to write a byte every two minutes. What should I do?
      Thanks!

    hengfo,
that question is not connected to LV nor to VISA. Its more a systematic question....
So let's view at this a bit more abstract:
You want to "toogle" between two different messages sent to your interface. So you have to know:
    - What was the last state i sent?
    - When do i have top send the new state?
    Even more abstract:
    - How can i switch between the states?
Since the states are known before your program is executed, you can insert them into an array. Next, you have to read out the appropriate index from the array which contains your new state. Send the state and go to the next state. Propably you want to change timing, but that's easy too.
See attached screenshot for a possible solution:
    hope this helps,

  • How to close TCP port in LV 4.1?

I've used the "TCP Listen" VI and the combination of "TCP Create Listener" & "TCP Wait on Listener" to accept a socket connection. That works fine, but I do not want the app to listen for any more requests once it has a connection. I would expect "TCP Listen" to close the listener once it has a connection, but it does not. When using the Create/Wait Listener VIs I call "Close Connection" on the Listener and even though I do not get an error, the port is still being listened to.
    What could be going wrong?

I also tried the other method of creating a listener, waiting on the listener, and closing the listener when a connection is made. The close of the listener returned "success" yet a "netstat -a" still showed that it was still listening on that port.
    Thanks again,
    Kevin

  • WRT54G v5 Uplink Port Not Designated

Running out of ethernet ports, wanting to add a Fast Switch (SMCGS5), the back panel of this router doesn't designate which port is an uplink port, likewise the switch. Unless I went blind, my User Guide and the User Guide online for this model, has no mention of any uplink port designation, other than the 3rd paragraph of the online Product Description, for this model.
I'm currently using one laptop, two PC's, and one NAS, and want to add one more wired PC. I'm noticing intermittent stalling or freezing after I installed the switch into Port 1. So I switched over to running to the switch from Port 4, noticed no difference in wired performance. Shutdown everything to be used on the network, including doing a reset all, no change in wired performance when the switch is used, otherwise, works fine with existing router/switch ports.
Took switch to friends house to install in their network. They have no problems with this switch.
Would anyone be able to help me identify if the WRT54G v5 Router even has a uplink port? Or are "all" the ports, uplink ports? I've read the pre-posting information and have searched for similar question(s).

You can still keep your linksys router...I would recommend you to upgrade the firmware on the router , then reset and re-configure it...
Download the firmware from here ,
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...
Then, unplug the power cable while holding down the reset button for another 30 Seconds...
Plug the power cable back in, and keep holding down the reset button for another 30 Seconds...
Release the reset button...Now re-configure your router and connect it to your switch...I hope this works...

  • WRT54G - IP and Port mapping problems

I'll set the scenario first so you can understand what i'm trying to do. I have a D-Link 524 configured trough PPoE to get access to internet. It has DHCP enabled (from 192.168.0.100 to .199). I had static ip configured in the D-Link router as 192.168.0.90 and some ports forwarded to my pc that's like 50 meters away from the router, in other office. The thing is, I added a WRT54G v6 router cause the wireless signal from the d-link didn't reach where I am, and some people needed to use it. So, I plugged my pc to the WRT54G, and the linksys to the D-Link. No, my problem is, I no longer have the static ip that the d-link assigned me (the linksys uses the 192.168.1.X range, and the d-link the 192.168.0.X range). Now, if I release my MAC address from the D-link and assing a static ip in the WRT54G, I could fordward the ports I had before in the d-link but in the linksys. The thing is, I can't find a way to assing a static ip in the linksys. And I tried to change the range of ip from the linksys to 192.168.0.X so I can still use the assigned address from the d-link but it didn't work, I couldn't access the linksys neither the d-link after changing the address, didn't get internet either, so i had to reset the linksys. After all of this... what the hell do I do Azureus can't connect, or any other P2P app for that matter (cause I had the ports forwarded in the other router, and I can't forward them in the linksys cause I get a dynamic local ip, if I forward them to, say 192.168.1.100 and some day I get assigned 192.168.1.101... well, I assume it won't work as expected)

The WRT54G does not assign fixed IP addresses through DHCP. You have to set a static IP address on the computer itself instead of using DHCP.
I would, however, recommend not to use the WRT as router but only as simple access point. Instructions are here. Set a LAN IP address like 192.168.0.2 on the WRT to keep it accessible inside your normal LAN. I think this setup will solve all your problems. You can still use the fixed IP address assignment from the DHCP server on the D-Link and you only have to configure a single port forwarding on the D-Link (instead of two which would be necessary if you connect the Linksys router through its internet port to the D-Link).
With two access points you can create a roaming network by using the identical wireless settings on both routers (SSID, wireless security, wireless mode). Channels should be different and at least 5 apart. SSID broadcast should be enabled on both. Now most wireless clients are able to move between both access points without loosing the connection.

  • EEM and TcL Script to Disable Inactive Ports

I've browsed around to the other  support strings to make sure I didn't miss anything, but I can't seem to  get this to work.  I have the latest sl_suspend_ports.tcl and  tm_suspend_ports.tcl created by Joseph Clarke from strings that verified they worked as planned.   Here are the commands I issued to register the scripts -
    Directory of flash:/policies/
        9  -rwx        3101   May 3 2013 07:58:03 +00:00  sl_suspend_ports.tcl
       10  -rwx        4669   May 3 2013 07:58:44 +00:00  tm_suspend_ports.tcl
    conf t

    event manager policy sl_suspend_ports.tcl
    event manager environment suspend_ports_days 1
    event manager environment suspend_ports_config flash:/susp_ports.dat
    event manager policy tm_suspend_ports.tcl
#show run | inc event manager environment
    event manager environment suspend_ports_days 1
    event manager environment suspend_ports_config flash:/susp_ports.dat
It doesn't appear to work though.  Essentially, we have a  need to make sure all computers are always on and all ports not active  for >24 hours to be shutdown and moved to a designated vlan (I added  the 'lappend' statement to the script to specify the additional command of assigning the vlan)
    I'm running 12.2(55)SE7 on Catalyst 3560s and 3750s
Is there a way to manually run the script?  Did I miss anything in the configuration?
    Thanks for your help!
    Chris

    SUCCESS!  AWESOME!
I added one more line to the lappend statements to add a description with the time stamp, here's what happened -

So to recap for any future folks that stumble upon this thread and want to use this method.
    1. Create a TACACS service account or use a TACACS/RADIUS account that has a high enough privilege to edit the config.
    2. Create a "policies" directory on flash and copy the attached scripts to it.
    3. Register the scripts using the following commands -
    #conf t
(config)#event manager directory user policy flash:/policies
    (config)#event manager policy sl_suspend_ports.tcl
(config)#event manager environment suspend_ports_days 1    "<--Or the number of days inactive you choose"
    (config)#event manager environment suspend_ports_config flash:/susp_ports.dat
    (config)#event manager policy tm_suspend_ports.tcl
(config)#event manager session cli username "svc.eemscript"  "<---The account you created to run in step 1"
The output of "show event manager policy registered" should then show the following -
    #show event manager policy registered
No.  Class     Type    Event Type          Trap  Time Registered           Secu  Name
    1    script    user    syslog              Off   Fri May 3 10:20:26 2013   2048  sl_suspend_ports.tcl
    pattern {LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN}
    nice 0 queue-priority normal maxrun 600.000 scheduler rp_primary
    2    script    user    timer cron          Off   Tue May 14 05:25:42 2013  2048  tm_suspend_ports.tcl
    cron entry {0 0 * * *}
    nice 0 queue-priority normal maxrun 600.000 scheduler rp_primary
NOTE: On lines 140-145 of the tm_suspend_ports.tcl file, you can edit the commands you want the script to execute to your liking.  I have it adding a description as seen in the above output and moving to an isolated non-routable VLAN of my network.
Thanks Joe Clarke for the awesome script and assistance in getting it running!

  • [WRT54GS] Forward a port in a different port

    Hello,
I have the wireless router WRT54GS v1.1. Its software version is v4.71.1
I would like to forward a port (for example 80) to a different port of my server on my local area (for example 8080).
So when a user connects to the url http://domain.com, the request is forward to the port  8080 of my server.
I have found in the configuration page of my router, the forwarding port but the target port can't be specified.
    Is it possible ?
    Thanks for your help.
    Saucisson
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks a lot !!!
It's very harm. I hoped that with an update or a telnet connection on the router, I could modify a missing menu :-)
I am probably testing the 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt. Have you got a good feedback ?

I have a Linksys WRT54G and I've had it for well over 3 years. I've been using another Wired router as a DHCP server and only used the wireless router for wireless access.
But recently, I took the wired router away and began using the WRT54G. I set up everything correctly including Port Forwarding, but the strange thing is that whenever I reboot my computer, the port forwarding service stops. If I enable it, disable it or do anything else, it still won't work.
The only way to fix this problem is to 'Reset Factory Settings' every time, but it gets really frustrating doing it every day. Has anyone else had this issue? P.S. - I have the latest firmware.

Checking back after 1 month, I still have this problem, no workaround found. Can anyone lend a hand?
