WRT54g may be dead.....

So I am thinking my faithful WRT54g has died.....or atleast the ethernet port did. I can connect wirelessly to it, BUT it won't connect to the internet. Regardless of how many times I power down both the modem and router. This started happening a couple of days ago, but normally a power down of the router fixed the issues. That stopped working.....well today. So powered down both router and modem several times to no avail. So I am working off of a spare WRT110 that I had bought thinking it would be better.....it's not. It's horrible with only maybe 5 ft of range. Anywho, I digress. Is there anyway to verify that indeed the ethernet port is dead? It's a completely stock WRT54g, no DDWRT, not even the latest firmware. If I recall correctly it has 1.5??? that may not be right but it won't let me upgrade it either.Tried that a second ago.
Otherwise it looks like I'll be buying a new router tonight.  Wondering if maybe the constant power down/up messed up some sort of configuration or IP between the router and the modem. Not sure.....I am only know enough that I'm dangerous.

another odd development in the story.
Soooo I bought a WRT110 about 6 months back, was a refurb didn't pay much for it, tried it out and it was horrible. Back in the box, and on the shelf with other useless technologies. Anywho I hook it up today just to get some kind of internet. In a weird "yeah this isn't going to work moment" hooked the 2 routers together via standard cat 5 cable that came with my WRT110.....and voila I have internet again using the 54g.
So right now I am connected via the 54g wireless signal, which is hard wired from port 4 on the 54g to port 4 on the 110. Oddly enough it works, BUT it isn't very stable and my iPhone won't connect to the internet from this. Going to try the hard reset as something just isn't adding up here.

  • WRT54G goes brain dead

First of all, the problem I am seeing occurs on an older version of firmware (not sure which one) and the latest (1.02).  Also, I tried this on another WRT54G, with the same result.  2 different routers, and 2 different firmwares.
My ISP (a wireless network, but the output of the modem is a standard Ethernet cable which plugs into the WAN port of the router), seems to reset their tower overnight most nights.  Bottom line is my ISP connection is down for some time (minutes probably).  The WRT54G goes belly up aftwards.  It "thinks" it's connected (the lights all flash correctly, and the status tab in the admin console says it's connected), but there is no access:  no browser, no VOIP, no pinging.  I can reset the router by pulling the plug or doing a disconnect/connect sequence on the status tab, and all is well again.  I have verified this belly-up condition manually:  I can disconnect the WAN ethernet connection for a few minutes, and then connect it back, and the WRT54G has gone brain dead:  no connection.
I have configured the WRT54G manually, and using their installation wizard.  Like I said, 2 different routers, 2 different firmwares (including the latest one).
I borrowed a Motorola WR850G.  Guess what?  It works!  If you disconnect the WAN and reconnect, it just starts working again, no reboot necessary.  So, what is going on with the WRT54G?  Surely this is such a basic issue (recovering from WAN-side lost connectivity), that I can hardly believe this product can't protect itself from this issue.  Help!

You may want to check for PPOe and also make sure that your router is configured with the correct TZ and DST settings. Some ISPs use domain controllers that are very time sensitive. And since DST has changed, you may be running into this problem with your linksys devices.
    Good luck.

  • G5 Quad hard drive may be dead - what should I do?

Yesterday my Quad froze up. I rebooted and got a screen full of code. I stepped back and a ran Hardware Test. It didn't find a problem. The local Genius Bar notices a 'clicking' sound and suggested that the hard drive may have failed.
My question: What are my options to retrieve the data [lots and lots of deadline-driven client work] before handing off my drive for a replacement? Suggestions please.
    G5 Quad/G3 tower/iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

A damaged directory can sound like the click of a dying drive.
If you can't get it off now and your usual backup software (CCC, SuperDuper, SynchronizePro) won't then try Data Rescue II (free demo, otherwise $99).
The best is to run Disk Warrior WEEKLY. Not when a drive is failing/failed. Intech Speedtools is also useful. But first is to always have TWO backup sets as MINIMUM.
Once you backup files you don't have backed up already or would be easy enough to replace, a full ERASE w/ ZERO-ALL OPTION can restore most 99% of drives unless it "nose-dived" into a platter and is physically shot. Which is rare.
If there is a bad block zero all usually works. Sometimes it takes 7-way write erase.
Of course drives are really inexpensive and $70 for 300GB or $120+ for 500GB. So really are almost disposable if there is a problem.
Some data recovery services costs hundreds or thousands of dollars. Start by buying three drives, some Firewire cases, and start doing daily and weekly backups.
DiscJockey is the only tool I know that can do a sector copy and doesn't require that the drive work inside a computer, and costs about $250.

  • My hard drive may be dead and if so im pretty screwed

When backing up my files to an external drive this evening my Imac completly froze and was restarted hard.when it goes to start up it wont get past the grey loading screen.I have tried using disk utility and it refuses to repair it,and on top of that if i try to continue through the installation process to just reinstall OSX it wont find the drive.I would hope that its not dead and still have a shred of hope that it isnt since the disk utility finds the drive and recognizes the partition still. The error it specifically gives is "Invalid Key length" and "Keys out of order" If anyone can please help i would be so greatful.Thank you

"The error it specifically gives is "Invalid Key length" and "Keys out of order""
If Disk Utility is unable to repair the above, you will need a 3rd party utility CD to repair. It appears you have directory damage.
DiskWarrior is highly recommended & will repair the damage.
TechTool Pro Will repair the damage. However, this utility CD does other repairs also.
You need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.

  • WRT54G ver.6 "Dead ?"

I need some Help i have a linksys wireless router WRT54G ver.6.(Vista)  It was working fine for years then I come home from work and can't get internet.  By-passed router and I get internet.  All lights on router are saying working ok but can't get a connection. I can't even long onto the IPS address for the set-up? I tried all of the Vista repair but gives me an answer at the end can't fix problem.  I'm ok with computers but not an expert. but I'm thinking it's a readability problem with the internet?  Any help or maybe it's time to buy a new one?  Thanks

Have you tried a hard 30-30-30 reset? First power off your router and remove all cables.  Then plug back in the power cord and let it boot.  When the power light stops blinking and is solid, locate the recessed reset button and press it in holding for 30 seconds. Remove power while still pressing in the reset button for 30 seconds more. Place power back to router for 30 last seconds and release the reset button.  Power off the unit and plug your main PC back into port 1 and your modem back into the WAN port. Power on and reconfigure your settings.  Test unit to see if your internet functionality has returned.

  • WRT54G Is it dead - how to check

The router appears to be dead, a box with lights but no communication with PC.
Neither a hardwired or wireless connection to PC will allow even a simple *admin* connection. Appears as if there is no communication.
How do I check to see if the router is dead?

Power down your router. Wait a minute and reconnect.

  • My harddrive may be dead

This is going to be a little complicated to explain, but please try and help.
So lately my macbook pro has been running very slowly, often times freezing up with the spinning beachball cursor thing. So i ran disk utility to try and see an error. I got these:
    -"The underlying task reported failure"
-Also an error about not being able to read the catalog. I don't know it verbatim though.
    Then disk utility stopped.
So i got DiskWarrior 4.0 and when i tried to do a rebuild it said: "the new directory cannot replace the original directory because of a disk malfunction"
    Here's the question:
I can still boot up and log on to my mac, it just runs very slowly and some apps don't work all the way. Do i need to reinstall os 10.4?

I honestly doubt your drive is physically about to die. The most likely situation you have is major catalogue and b-tree damage which is causing your problems. As suggested, backup immediate, then format your drive, write zeros to it at least the once (in Disk Utility) and reinstall Mac OS X and software from scratch and finally, restore your data only from your backup.

  • MacBook may be dead??

    Hi,
I have a black Macbook 80/1GB/2.0 and it about 10 months old, it's pretty much worked fine since I bought it. I had one issue where a system file corrupted, and I had to reset the power management, but nothing major... I love in California, but I'm holidaying in the Philippines at the moment, and the last night I had left it on, just closing it, therefore putting it to sleep, saw the small sleep light on, and put it in it's case. Not more than a few hours later I went to open it, the light was now off, checked the battery, had three out of five lights on, and then proceeded to do everything I could to get it going and could not get any response out of it. It would charge, got it fully charged (at least the green adapter light was now on and all five battery status lights are on), but I get not get any type of life out of it. I have tried resetting the power management, starting it withour the battery and pretty much everything else I can think of, and there's no apple dealer where I am, and won't be close to one until I'm in Hong Kong in a week...
Does any body have any idea's as to what I can do to get it going again...?? Please, any help would be amazing. Unfortunatley I do not haver the system disks with me, but I don;t knwo how cgood they would be anyhow, because it's not even getting into a grey screen... Which lead me to believe it's maybe hardware... Ahhh!...
    Thanks in advance...

Did you try to reset smc as nickiwi suggest by unplug everything including battery, and press power button for 10 second, and put the battery back in and plug the magsafe and turn it back on?
Here is the article that explain it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303234
When you try to turn it on, does the optical drive make noise?
Sometimes if the HD failed (hopefully not), it took longer time for macbook to start up before finally start up with folder and question mark.
If after you reset everything the macbook still unresponsive, better wait until you are in Hong Kong and get more professional help.
    Good Luck.

  • Dead ipod 4th gen

I have a ipod classic 4th gen with 20gb and it has stopped working. I reset it when I first got it and put my songs on it and it worked fine. I let is set for a few months while I tried to find a new ipod cable for my car. When I tried to use it, with ear buds, it didn't turn on so I thought it may be dead even though it had a full battery when I shelved it. It has been plugged into a wall charger for about 45 minutes now and it still doesn't work. I have looked at a few other discussions and
1 menu + select doesn't work, ipod is completely dead (fancy paper weight)
2 my macbook 10.6.8  with itunes 10.6.1 doesn't to recognise my ipod, it doesn't even show up as being plugged in
I get no exclamation points or sad faces just the black and white screen, off. It absolutely will not turn on.  I have yet to try the drop on floor method, especial since that is how I lost my last Ipod(poor ipod mini, I miss you). I also am not as technically inclined as some so I will also not be taking my ipod apart. I have aslo not dropped this ipod since I have owned it, looks like it was dropped maybe once before I got it.
I really don't want to drive 45 miles to the nearest offical Apple store...
    Thanks for any help.

Mine is dead too. I have 80GB Clasic. A few weeks ago, the LCD screen stopped working, and when i went into settings..with the help of a flashlight, the backlight in settings had nothing next to it like the other featueres had. Then I plugged into the computer and I barely saw LOW BATTERY.
So I left it in thinking that is charging, but after several hours, it just had a blanl black window. I jiggled the power switch back and fouth and left it on OFF. I first tried to reset using the Center and Menu button, and held it for 6-15 secs...NADA, Then I did the same jiggling, and this time I tried the bottom Pause and center button (as a genius at apple phone support told me to try, and it worked. This was after I went to the genius apple store, three years ago, he told me it was FRIED.  I was ****** after spending 400.00 on this 80GB.
Now.Nothing at all. Just Black screen. BUT, weirdly enough, afrter thinking the LCD screen went black and no useful, I did see the light on the LCD screen splashed a Apple website...WHAT?  How did that happen?  I tried differnt apple cables, JBL soundstage, my computer, and itunes, it also never showed up in devices.
I'll think twice before i ever get another apple ANYTHING.  made in china.....well well well. Does not surprise me AT ALL!  So I guess this goes to recycle.  heck if i'm going to give this back to apple and get a smaller reburbished ipod, only to that to go out too. I'd rather toss it in the trash.

  • Hi i have iMac G5 Power PC with dead logic board, when i turn it on screen is dead. Is it possible to recover data off it by hooking up via firewire to my newer G5 3.06Ghz with IntelCore

Kia ora, hi i have an older (2003 or 4) iMac G5 Power PC 2GHZ - when i turn it on the screen stays dead but the light below screen comes on & i can hear fan (after a few mins on the fan gets noisy).I think the logic board may be dead & can not afford new one & I would like to recover some files & stuff from it and have heard you can recover stuff using a firewire cable so i got cable (firewire 400 to 800) but i am unsure how exactly to do it.
Can anyone out there please explain how i might do it
    Thankyou very much
ps my first post on mac forums so hope i got it right

You can remove the hard drive from the iMac and put it in an external enclosure.  You could try using Target Disk Mode to transfer data.  Click on the blue link to get the instructions on how to transfer the data.

  • My brand new Imac 20" is already "dead"

Hi, I bought yesterday an Imac 20", 2,2 Ghz. Everything was going fine, I installed my programs, I was conntected to Internet....Everything normal. I decided to upgrade the system, 347 MB download. It starts, it takes some times and I left it alone for about 2 hours.
I came back and there was no way to star it again. I thought it had stopped, but keybouard, mouse, nothing could start it again.
Dead. I pushed down the start buttom, but nothing at all.
Can anyoune tell me what's happened?
    Thank you
    Paola

Well, it may be dead. That happens. But try doing a power manager reset:
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

  • XServe RAID - Possible Dead Drive

I'm running a G5 XServe with RAID 5 - I have 3 80 GB drives, and it has slowed significantly recently - when loading some software today, I see that one of the drive lights (power light is on) was not blinking showing activity... I think the drive may be dead. Any software utility that I can use to check on the health of the drives?

    Hi randolph,
This forum is about the xserve RAID, aphyiscal box that can contain 14 disks and connects through fibre channel.
I suggest you ask your question in a more apropriate forum, there will be more knowkedge about your question there.
(To get you started: I would check the disk first with disk utility)

  • Dead Hard Drive?  Help Please!

A friend came to me with a PowerBook G4 12" saying that he was working on it under 10.2, when suddenly "white text" filled the screen. After shutting the computer down and attempting to restart, the computer seemed dead in the water. I have tried the following things to see if I could fix the box:
1.) Used a Mac OSX boot Cd to check installation
2.) Used DiskWarrior to check the directory
The issue is that DiskWarrior and the Mac OSX cd cannot even find a drive to install the software on. The only thing that I have seen on the laptop is a home folder entitled "root". Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this. Hard drive may be dead...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, ScottyP39.
Your guess is probably correct - it does sound ominously like the hard drive is dead.
However, it may still be worth trying to use FireWire Target Disk Mode to see if the drive can be seen from another FW-equipped Mac. Alternatively, if there is a bootable cloned-backup on an external FW drive, then try using that to restart the PowerBook.

  • Power Mac G4 Dead?

I own a Power Mac G4 MDD, and recently i had to adjust the usb ports as they were tilted, so i removed the heatsink and accidentally touched the processor when putting the heatsink back on and now when i turn it on there are a couple things that happen:
    1. Fans and Red light on logicboard start up, display does not
    2. After a while the fans kick up their speed
    3. Does not shut off automatically, but power button fades
Help would be appreciated very much.

If you pulled the AC power cord out while you worked on it, your Mac may be suffering from a dead battery. It will tend to forget where the display is and what its resolution should be. It can also cause additional problems. I suggest you do a PMU Reset, and since your battery may be dead, to do it with the AC power cord installed.
    From completely off:
Press and hold the tiny button on the motherboard nearest the battery for a quarter minute. Avoid momentary presses.
    Wait at least five seconds.
    Try to start up again.
If this fixes the problem, you should suspect battery problems with the 3.6 Volt 1/2 AA-size non-recharging battery. if you have not changed it in years (or ever) it could be time.

  • Iphone 4 completly dead

doesn't charge, May be dead battery, constantly problems since thursday. First no sim card then a brick. This is a bad apple!

Connect your device to a mains charger, and press and hold both the lock (on/off switch) and the home button at the same time. Keep holding these two buttons until you see a faint empty battery/charging battery icon on your iPhone's screen. Once this appears, release the buttons, and leave it to continue charging. Once charged again you'll be able to use it.
Sometimes iPhones can 'freeze' in standby, which to the naked eye the device just appears locked, but all this time it's actually draining battery extremely fast, so the next time you go to use it, it's completely dead. The above method forces the iPhone to reboot, using power from the mains, allowing it to continue charging back to a usable state.
If you don't see the charging logo appear on your device after holding the buttons, it'd be safe to assume your iPhone has some sort of hardware fault preventing it from powering on.
