Wrting data to a file in specific positions

Hi, i have written a program that reads from one text file, grabs certain data and I will write that data out to a new fie. I am successfully doing the write, but how do I tell it to write the different data in specific positions in that new file. Right now it just writes the data int he order that I have it coded, but that is not necessarily the order i want the data written in. for example i want texta to start in position 25, while textc will be written first and textb will start in pos 150.
writer.write(texta);
writer.write(textb);
writer.write(textc);

Are these "positions" you are talking about line numbers or some sort of byte offset?
if they are line numbers and you don't have a ton-load of data in that file, then I would advocate reading the file into some sort of collection, ordering the collection the way you want, and writing the data back.
If they are byte offsets (or something similar) then you'll likely need to look at RandomAccessFile.
Good Luck

    Open the example finder (Help>>Find Examples) and look at the Write Datalog File example. You can also convert your data to text to save a simple text file. Also, the tutorials in the following links probably cover something similar.
    To learn more about LabVIEW, I suggest you try searching this site and google for LabVIEW tutorials. Here, here, here, here and here are a few you can start with and here are some tutorial videos. You can also contact your local NI office and join one of their courses.

  • Importing data from third party file with specific layout

    Hello everyone,
    I have been searching the forum and googling for help on this but so far no success.
    The issue I have is the following:
    - I need my client to provide data to me in 2 different dates (Date 1 and Date 2), for example, a bank account balance;
    - He has already provided me with data for "Date 1" in the previous year and this information is stored in a file, generated by a government software;
    - I have the file layout provided by the government, establishing the location and number of characters where the information is stored (e.g. need to import characters 4-12 of a specific line in the file);
    - I need to be able to read from this file and pre-populate field "Date 1" with the amounts informed previously;
    - I will then send a PDF form for him to update the "Date 2" field, using the amount in "Date 1" as a reference.
    Is there any way I can do this?
    I like researching and do this as a hobby, therefore I don't expect to receive pieces of code already prepared - I would just appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction here, as my coding skills are from a guy interested in learning things.
    Many thanks in advance for all the help.
    P.S.: the government software can generate a .PDF file and the data I need is reported there, just in case it is easier to work with a PDF file instead.

    Hi,
    Looks like that you are using relative path. Then, the file must be located in MathScript search path. Otherwise, MathScript can not find that file. You can either specify the absolute path or add the path to MathScript search path list.
    I have tried in LabVIEW 8.6. dlmread should work well to read data from .txt file.

  • Search files for specific lines of data

    Hi all, I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with.
    I need to find a way to search for specific lines of data on a file.
    Here's the setup.... say for example I have 10 files, each filled with log files containing data like the date they were created and also certain information they were monitoring.
    From a Java applet, a user types in information that they want (for example, only lines that were created between 2002/04/04 and 2002/05/05 and only ones tagged with "Caution"). I need a way to grab all of those line from each of the files, without having to open each file, read each line and check for each search request. Instead, I want to simply grab all of the data at once, or at the very least, grab all of the data from the first file, then grab all of the data from the second file etc, without having to search each individual line. (the reason I'm hoping for a command like this is because there will eventually be thousands of files that need to be searched, and opening each one, and then search each line one by one would take too long.
    Sort of like a grep command in Linux. Does Java have a similar command?
    Any information or samples would be greatly appreciated!

    I don't know how much control you have over the files that you have to search.
    Searching XML files would be a lot easier because XPATH queries will work exactly like SQL... The only problem being if your files are not XML at all.
    If you have control over the format of these files you are trying to search, then try XML... else you might have to write a batch utility that runs every N seconds and converts data in these files to XML format files conforming to a specific format and then your applet could query the XML files.
    There will be a small concurrency issue there, though; As there will be at least some time consumed by the thread.

  • How to delete data from a file using IO package

    Hi All,
    i am trying to remove some content of the file.
    this content is not at starting of file not even at end of file.
    can anybody tell me how can i delete number of lines from file using IO package.

    iam having some data in text file .ex:in flowrist.txt
    12/5/07,500,300,6000 like many set of datas are
    there.In these if i want to delete the data based on
    the date which i specified.How to do this specific
    deletion?You need to open a stream to read in the file and then use the indexOf method provided in the Sting class to check if the line contains the date or whatever String you are looking for, if so then skip that line and store or re-write the lines you wish to keep, as well as some extra lines you may wish to add.
    Take a look below at this example found on Google.
    http://www.java-tips.org/java-se-tips/java.io/how-to-read-file-in-java.html
    The above read a file line by line and prints it to console. You should be able to modify this, instead of using System.out to print the line you should use index of to check the lines for a date/String. Index of return -1 if the String you specify is not in the line you parse.

  • Charting data from text file in LabVIEW 5.1 for Windows

    I am having some difficulties trying to figure out how to plot a chart with
    data from a file. I would like to be able to read data from a text file
    into a chart using LabVIEW 5.1 for Windows. I have looked in the help
    within the program and online. I have also looked in the user manual and
    the book "LabVIEW for Everyone". Could you please give me specific
    instructions on how I would construct the program to be able to do this.
    Thank you.

    Hi Ellie,
    It depends on how data is stored in that txt file. Usually you load the data into an array either using or , the array if necessary and send it to the graph indicator in required form. If you want a more detailed answer, send me a sample data file ([email protected]).

  • How to read data from multiple files and append in columns in one file

    Hi Guys,
    I have a problem in appending data from files in different columns. I have attachement has file A and B which I am reading and not able to get data as in file Result.txt. Please comment on how can I do this

    You cannot append columns to an existing file. Since the data is arrange line-by-line as one long linear string in the file, you can only append rows. A new row needs to be interlaced into the original file, shifting everything else. If you want to append rows, you need to build the entire output structure in memory and then write all at once.
    (I also don't think you need to set the file positions, it will be remembered from the last write operation.)
    Unless the files are gigantic, here's what I would do:
    (Also note that some of your rows have an extra tab at the end. If this is normal, you need a little bit more code to strop out empty columns. I include cleaned up files in the attachment. I also would not call them A.txt.txt etc. A plain A.txt is probably sufficient.)
    EDIT: It seems Dennis's solution is similar )

  • How to add a button in the view at a specific position

    Hi Gurus,
    We have a requirement :
    To add a button or image at a specific position in the view which is like an indicator showing different color
    based on another field .
    Example :
    Adding a button next to a drop down flield and changing the color of the button based on the name of the color choosen in the drop down .
    or Adding an image which can be changed based on the dropdown value or the value entered in the input field .
    Thanks ,
    Naval Bhatt.

    Hi,
    Create an Attribute ZINDICATOR , in the same context node in which the dropdown(picklist) attribute,exists.
    Let it be a CHAR 1 field.
    Implement GET_P and GET_ method.
    Pull this field beside the dropdown fields in view configuration.
    Now the code =>
    Implement the Get_P_ZINDICATOR for this attribute as explained by Robert
    Implement  Get_ZINDICATOR method as follows
      DATA:
         lr_current   TYPE REF TO if_bol_bo_property_access,
         lr_entity TYPE REF TO cl_crm_bol_entity,
         coll      TYPE REF TO if_bol_entity_col.
      lr_current ?= collection_wrapper->get_current( ).
    IF lr_current IS NOT BOUND.
       value = cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url( 'check_empty.gif' ).
       RETURN.
    ELSE.
       dref = lr_current->get_property( 'ZINDICATOR' ) .
    ENDIF.
    IF dref IS NOT BOUND.
        value = cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url( 'check_empty.gif' ).
        RETURN.
    ENDIF.
    TRY.
        value = if_bsp_model_util~convert_to_string( data_ref       = dref
                                                                                attribute_path = attribute_path
          IF value IS INITIAL.
            value = cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url( 'check_empty.gif' ).
    *      ELSEIF  value EQ 'R'
    *        value = cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url( 'check_overdue_status.gif' ). " gives RED LIGHT
          ELSEIF  value EQ 'Y' .
            value = cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url( 'check_due_status.gif' ). " gives YELLOW light
          ELSEIF  value EQ 'G'.
            value = cl_thtmlb_util=>get_icon_url( 'check_nodue_status.gif' ). " gives GREEN light
          ENDIF.
    CATCH cx_bsp_conv_illegal_ref.
          CLEAR value.
          RETURN.
    CATCH cx_root.
          CLEAR value.
          RETURN.
    ENDTRY.
    Generally check_overdue_status.gif and other images are std. and are present in all skins.
    You need more colors then you have to add those images in the MIME repository in the images folder of the SAP SKIN folder.
    You must implement the eventhandler for Dropdown field. For this in the GET_P method of dropdown, use
    CASE iv_property
      WHEN  if_bsp_wd_model_setter_getter=>fp_server_event.
          rv_value = 'COLOUR_SELECTED'.
    ENDCASE.
    and then implement the event handler EH_ONCOLOUR_SELECTED.
    In this event handler, you must set the ZINDICATOR value as ' ' , 'R','G','Y' etc depending upon what is selected in dropdown.
    This ensures that a server roundtrip is triggered and so the GET method of indicator field is called as soon as dropdown value
    is selected.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks & Regards
    Suchita

  • Reading in data from a file

    Hi,
    I am tring to read data from a file into my Web Service program. Its a plain text file with item descriptions and price info etc. At the moment I'm trying BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(...) but I keep getting an exception with Tomcat not being able to locate my file.
    Should there be a specific location for files such as this? Or do I need to add a path to a properties or build file? I have tried many different system locations.
    I've tried to follow the Sun coffee bean example, but I have found it very complex and would appreciate a clear simple answer.
    This is driving me crazy and any help would be much appreciated.
    //Daniel.

    public static void main(String argv[]) {
         try {
              String filename="absolute path to some file";
              BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(
    (Reader)new FileReader(filename)
              String line;
              while ((line=in.readLine()) != null)
    System.out.println(line);
         catch (Exception e) {
              System.out.println(e.toString());

  • How to store the data of a file into an ArrayList?

    Hi! everyone.
    I want to know
    if I have a File, and the data in the file are type int, type String...
    And I have a ArrayList which is of type Question
    How do I store the data of that file into the ArrayList
    I tried to use the while loop(use the hasNextLine() to read the data line by line)
    But I cannot add data which are not of type Question to the ArrayList.
    Can you tell me what I should do, please?
    I also wonder that
    The data of the file are of many types, but when I try to read it with the nextLine(), the data all turn out to be of type String. Why?
    Thank you.
    Edited by: Terry001 on Apr 30, 2008 1:13 PM

    No, a line in the file is just part of a question
    The format of the file is like this:
    *<question type code>                    :     String*
    *<question point value>                    :     int*
    *<question category>                         :     String*
    *<question difficulty level>               :     int*
    *<question text>                              :     String*
    *<question correct answer>               :     String*
    *<optional question-specific data>     :     String*
    *<question terminator>                    :     String*
    And here is an example
    TF //TrueFalseQuestion
    5 //points value
    None //category
    3 //difficulty level
    The capital of the United States is Washington, D.C. //question text
    True // answer
    *** //quetion terminator
    I created an ArrayList in the Test class:
    private ArrayList<Question> questions; // Create inside constructor
        public Test (String name, String instr)
            testName = name;
            scoreEarned = 0;
            scorePossible = 0;
            instructions = instr;
            questions = new ArrayList<Question>(); //[MAX_NUMBER_OF_QUESTIONS];
        }And I tried to use the following method to store the data of the file to the ArrayList
    // This method loads a set of questions from a plain text file
        public void loadQuestionsFromFile(String fileName) throws FileNotFoundException
            try
                File fileReader = new File("input.txt");
                Scanner sc = new Scanner(fileReader);
                while (sc.hasNextLine())
                    // I don't know how to pass the data I got from the nextLine() method to the ArrayList because they are of different type
            catch (FileNotFoundException a)
                System.out.println(a);
        }    As all you said, I should create an Question object in the while loop
    Question temp = new Question ();But I have no idea how to pass the int and String to the Question object.
    Thank you

  • How to read data from a file in OSB

    hi guys,
    Recently, I've got a problem with reading file from specific location. I've actually followed this post OSB 11g - Read or Poll File in OSB - Oracle Fusion Middleware Blog, and then
    I know how to read a file. However, it does not as expected. Because, I've found no way to read data from the file. Therefore, no chance to manipulate the data like assigning to a variable, or extracting ....
    Hence, is there any way to read data from file by using proxy service in OSB ??? No Java code ???
    by the way, supposed that there is no way to read data from a file in OSB. So, What purposes will the way in the post above be used for?

  • BCP data into a file using Runtime class

    Hi,
         I have a problem in using the Runtime class.
    I am trying to bcp a table's data into a file.I am working on a Unix environment.
    My bcp is not getting completed fully.The total records to be bcped is 1 million,but only one lakh records is getting bcped and then it hangs up..But if i issue the bcp command from my telnet session it is bcping it to the file without any problem.Can anyone help me out on how to overcome this..
    Is there anything specific with Runtime class..I am pasting the code that i tried out below.
    String l_s_bcpQuery="bcp mubstage.dbo.HousingUnitSampleMarket out /dun/d3nmb0/mariaps/subracheckprototype -c -t~ -Umariaps -Prykwz5ba -SD3NMB_MUB";

    }catch(Exception ioe){
