X DPI weirdness

This started way back with the xorg-server 1.7 upgrade I think.  Basically, X is confused about what DPI my monitor is:
$ grep -B1 DPI /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(**) NOUVEAU(0): Display dimensions: (370, 230) mm
(**) NOUVEAU(0): DPI set to (131, 132)
$ xrandr | grep ' connected'
LVDS-0 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 367mm x 230mm
$ xdpyinfo | grep -B1 resolution
dimensions: 1920x1200 pixels (508x317 millimeters)
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
For some reason, by DPI is correctly detected (131, 132), but then ignored by all my applications.  xdpyinfo wrongly reports (96, 96) as the DPI, and all my fonts are drawn super small.  I've been overriding the DPI from within KDE, but I find it weird that the DPI is detected and then ignored.  Is this an xorg bug or a configuration issue?

The real dimensions are 370x320 mm, and the correct DPI is 131x132.  No multiple displays; it's just a laptop screen.
I've looked everywhere for something setting the DPI, but cant find it.  Nothing in my dotfiles does that, and I got the same result (96x96 dpi) when I tried starting X as root and as a new user.

  • Still weird problems with CS4/My new computer

Here is situation. Machine works very well when I´m editing HD video but soon as I start edit multi-cam: PROBLEMS! And as I watch from monitor that materia that I been edited so far, it works well, but as soon as I try to change cameras, everything slows-down. Like there is too little memory or something. Could the problem be somewhere in that CS4 program? Because I watch same time those CPU/Memory values and they don´t go very hight. CPU about max. 40% and Memory max 4Gb. And basicly: Is thia computer powerfull enough for Creative Suite CS4
My graphics card is, ATI Radeon HD 4870. I have update my bios and  Radeon should be 64bit with latest drivers.
I have ran PassMark Performance test again and again. 2D results are mysterious low and also  disk results ( sequenta write/random seek).
    Everydays I got bluescreens (Bad_Pool-Header, Bad-Pool_Caller etc.)
Also I´ve notised that in that computer shop they connect those Hard-drives in in SAT 3 and 4. Should they be connected in 1 & 2?
Also my "first" hard-drive (C:) shoud be very fast, 10 000rpm but in that performance test, and also in Windows hard-drive test results shows, that information does not move as fast as it should be?
Hard-drive is 300 GB ATA II VelociRaptor drive model FS WD3000HLFS
( http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2503 ). Is that hard-drive appropriate for Windows 7 or vise versa?
Or could that problem be in my memory chips?
In here I ad my DxDiag-file. I wonder why there said that in displey devices: Current Mode: 1920 x 1200 (32 bit) (59Hz) ?? Should it be 645Bit be cause displaycard is 64bit ???

    Thanks for tips!
We may have to clear up the hole computer. I have quite a lot videomaterial in hard-drive D, waiting for edit. In C there are basic brograms, Corel X4 and some players. Nothing bigger. Still, before that, now that "normal" HD editing is working quite well,  I wonder:
Are CPU about  40% and Memory 4Gb values normal when I´m editing with CS4?
Is my computer actual powerfull enough for Creative Suite CS4?
Why in Earth are those 2D values so lame?
Hard-drives are connected in SAT 3 and 4. Should they be connected in 1 & 2?
First hard-drive (C:) shoud be very fast, 10 000rpm but in that performance test, and also in Windows hard-drive test results shows, why?
Could problem be in my memory chips?
    And:
In DxDiag-file, why there said that in display devices: Current Mode: 1920 x 1200 (32 bit) (59Hz) ?? Should it be 64Bit be cause displaycard is 64Bit??
So many questions and so many possibilities...
Thank you very much and sorry all my weird question but I´m about to explode becauise of this stupid machine!!! Arg!
Sometimes I think that it would be better live in stoneage...

Having a ThinkPad T42p with a 1600x1200 LCD with the visible dimensions of 304 x 228 mm, I have set that in xorg.conf ("DisplaySize  304 228"), which results in Xorg setting up 133x133 DPI on start (without specifying this DisplaySize setting, it defaults to 75x75 DPI).
133 DPI results in fonts displayed way too large, although I remember WinXP (which came preinstalled with this laptop) setting 133 DPI as well, which also gave large fonts, but not that large as seen with Xorg.
I am now using KDE (specifically funkyou's KDEMOD), and I have set "Fixed DPI: 96 DPI" in font-settings, which means, text is displayed in a reasonable size with 96 DPI, but Xorg is still set to 133 DPI:
    $ xdpyinfo | grep res
    resolution: 133x133 dots per inch
I really don't understand this font vs. Xorg DPI setting. How does this fit together?
Why are fonts shown way too large at 133 DPI, if that's the correct DPI setting for my screen size & resolution?

Why does it need to scale properly, if Xorg should already have set DPI to the correct value calculated from the display size?
How did you determine, that 100 DPI is the correct fonts-DPI-setting for your display?
This is just weird, because setting the DPI setting for fonts does not influence the DPI setting of the X server (that's what I mentioned above, selected "Fixed DPI: 96" in KDE's font-settings, and xdpyinfo still reports 133 DPI).
Concerning my LCD, 133 DPI seems reasonable for my 15" laptop-display with relatively high native resolution of 1600x1200, so the Xorg setting surely is correct. But why do I then need to set 96 DPI for fonts to be displayed in a proper size?
Even more confusing is, that the settings for the ATI Radeon open-source-driver offer even more options concering DPI:
    #Option "MergedDPI" # [<str>]
    #Option "ConstantDPI" # [<bool>]
As seen, I have not enabled these, but that makes altogether 4 different settings for influencing DPI.
Fact is, 96 DPI in KDE's fonts-settings seems to lead to the desired result, although that value should not be the proper one for my display-size & resolution, as well as I have no idea, what the X server resolution (133x134 DPI) is all about, especially because it does not seem to be of any importance if font-settings are forced to a different DPI setting (which means, it does not seem to matter, if the X server resolution is set to 75x75, 96x96 or 133x133 DPI, as long as the option for force fonts at 96 DPI is selected in KDE's fonts-settings).

  • Report Viewer 120 DPI screen get messed up

    Greetings all.
I'm having a weird issues using the .NET 2.0 CrystalReportViewer control.
The screen is set to 120DPI and the viewer is displaying a report (any actually). I click on a report field inside the viewer, which seem to "select" the field even if it really doesn't do much anyway. Then, resize the viewer and abracadabra, the report get's all messed up. It become totally unreadable, like if the control started to paint itself in double or triple. Kind of weird to describe. But you really have to click on a field. Otherwise, the view behave nicely.
We are using Crystal REport XI Release 2 runtimes. Full version seems to be 11.5.8.826 (can't find any info inside CR to figure out which SP I have!!! sweet)
I've tested in 96 DPI and all is ok, but beside this DPI, the viewer just go nuts.

    Hi Alexandre,
These are all known issues with XI R2. They have all been fixed in XI R3 ( version 12 ) and can be.
Due to the complexity of the viewers and the depth they go into the source code they will not be fixed in XI R2.
Only option is to upgrade or stay @ 96 DPI.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Weird structures in tonal transitions under ACR 4.1

    Greetings,
I switched to ACR 4.1 recently and found that 4.1 (as opposed to, say, 4.0) creates weird microstructures in gradients and tonal transitions. They are clearly visible when image is oversharpened, but do affect the image even with proper sharpening.
Here is an example. Windows XP, Photoshop CS3, Canon 20D, ISO 1600. The image has been converted with noise reduction luminance=50, color=50. With ACR 4.0 the sharpening was set to 100 (yes, I know, that's not the proper setting) and with ACR 4.1 Amount=100, Radius=1.0, Detail=25, Masking=0.
This is ACR 4.1 conversion: http://www.kaax.org/pile/Microstruct/20050430_0168_microstruct_ACR41.jpg
And this is ACR 4.0 conversion:
    http://www.kaax.org/pile/Microstruct/20050430_0168_microstruct_ACR40.jpg
These are 100% crops of a small part of the original image and show an out-of-focus edge of a dark object against a light background. Raw file is available upon request.
My impression is that overall the ACR 4.1 does a better job of dealing with high-ISO images -- the conversion is cleaner and smoother. But -- and this is a big BUT -- the tonal transitions areas suffer from this microstructure that ACR 4.1 introduces.
With many images this is not a big deal -- if you downrez a full frame for screen display or, say, print a 5x7, the microstructure disappears or fades below the perception threshold. But for some images -- in particular, ones that are printed large or heavily cropped and then oversharpened by design -- for such images this problem makes ACR 4.1 effectively unusable.
I would appreciate comments as to whether this microstructure is here to stay with future releases of ACR or it's an early-implementation artifact and will be fixed soon.
    Kaa

Jeff, post #13> You cant' mean it!! Prints, prints, only prints, always full frame, 300dpi, 1200 dpi, no crops, no enlarging....
Where do you live? Photoshop family is sold for these purposes only? Please visit the real world, reality is so much different...
As I wrote in another forum:
I work as an art director/designer and in my workflow it is not an exception to use 100% crops for on-screen art, small part of images for prints or, on the other hand, mere 30 dpi images for large media. As a matter of fact, this is very common. Many shots are presented on screen at 100% too. I'm perfectly aware these differences wouldn't show in a 300dpi print, but unfortunately 300dpi prints of full frame images are about 20% of my output.
Every pixel counts. Even though Kaa didn't mention loss of detail, I have to... I made this simple test: I made ACR 4.0 conversion of iso 100 image, scaled it to 70% then back up to 100% and applied basic sharpening filter. Then I compared it against 4.1 conversion (layer over layer). Even then the twice resampled 4.0 was better and I would choose it right away (against the fullres 4.1). Of course it depends on individual image, but new algorithm's splotches are killing many megapixels of my camera's resolution. And I can't turn it off.
There ARE losses in detail, there ARE nasty structures (in natural textures and bokeh especially) and it IS an issue in real world situations.
Concerning the noise (which is probably the origin of all those new changes): If the noise is captured, it should be converted. If one wants, one will remove it after that in proper tab. Remember, Adobe products are Pro products. In future CS4, will we have healing clone tool only? It is so much more sophisticated then the old Clone stamp, isn't it? Will there be default noise reduction when saving psd? Or what?
Stop talking about prints only and not being important what you see at 100%, please.
4.0 quality with 4.1 functionality would be great. Adobe, don't fix what isn't broken. Thank you

  • When I move from window to window my screen has weird pixels

    Hello,
Sometimes when I move from window to window there are appeared weird pixels on the screen.
It seems that the image is not processed fast enough.
    Any advices?

hello, have you set any other dpi value in your operating system than the default one (96dpi)? more information about that is available at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/display_use_large_or_small_fonts.mspx

  • CS4: change document DPI, keep pixel size, change cm's

As the title says, I am looking for a way to change the DPI of a document, but by default photoshop changes the pixels, and keeps the centimeters.
However, I want the centimeters to change, and not the pixels, when changing the dpi.
Is this possible, and if so, how?

    Sweet!
    Thanks!
Kinda weird it is now re-rendering the smart filters, because the pixels havent changed, but I guess thats standard procedure with resizing.
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Weird graphical user interface behavior - defective card?

After I work for a while with my MBP I notice some weird things in the GUI. For instance, when I scroll through the various items in the popdown menus the "blue" selector is no longer there (i.e. I can't see what I am selecting while I scroll through with the mouse). I always resolve this issue by restarting the machine. Other times I ahve to restrat the Finder when i try to secure empty the trash - it just crashes. I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar behaviors: does this depend on the software or on the graphic card?
    Yhank you for the help.

Try creating a brand new account (in System Preferences -> Users & Groups) and test there.
    Tried. The same.
I don't actually have a retina machine, but I see no reason for this to be related to the fact that you have a retina MBP. Unless you have information that suggests it is present on other similar machines...?
At first I thought that it was just on the Retina, but then I really looked into my external monitor and saw it — looking at it right now. It seems to me that when Always show tab bar is ON the space between Bookmarks bar and the tab is sloppy sliced.
The hDPI screen reveals the graphic irregularities from regular DPI screens without a problem.
The reason I posted this here is because I saw many people are having glitches, artifacts and flickers with Safari (on Retina).

  • Firefox and DPI problems

I've been attempting to get xorg up and running, and in general it works ok, but in firefox, opera, and epiphany, all of my webpages tend to make the fonts to large. I think from reading other posts that the dpi is wrong...
However I can't seem to get the fonts to shrink. I've tried setting a DisplaySize, changing the dpi in local.conf, but nothing seems to change it
See if the menu doesn't look right on this website:
    www.ethilien.net/new_site
I'll see if I can figure out how to post a screenshot later, but the way it is supposed to look is the menu is supposed to be one block with text inside it and only vertical lines on either side of each link. But right now the box for each link extends beyond the edge of the menu bar.
I'm also getting weird graphical glitches like the animated gifs for the smilies in this post box are moving back and forth and getting all distorted.
If anyone has any idea why this is happening, I'd really be grateful

  • Xorg 1.10.1 no longer affected by manual DPI setting

I use my 23 inch 1920x1080 monitor as TV also. As this means I sit rather far from it, I manually set DPI quite low to enlarge windows and fonts by default. However after the last upgrade, which brought Xorg 1.10 and Gnome 3, Xorg seems to no longer be affected by my setting DPI in xorg.conf. The logs show that the value is read, and xdpyinfo shows the DPI I have set manually, but this setting no longer seems to affect any windows or fonts.
The DPI is set via the nvidia driver. Relevant parts of xorg.conf and the full Xorg.0.log are attached.
Does anyone know what could have caused this?

I seem to have been unclear in my original post. Setting it in Gnome 3 would all be fine and dandy, however although Gnome 3 was installed (upgraded from 2.x), I use fvwm. Gtk etc is still used but I don't see why upgrading a DE I don't use would impair another WM from using the X11 DPI settings. Also changing that setting in Gnome 3 does not affect neither the login screen (GDM) nor anything in fvwm.

  • My Excel with PowerPivots acts weird, it hangs when i try to change font color

    Hi
I am facing a weird issue using PowerPivot in my workbook, there is a worksheet named Charts in my workbook and all the charts i am using resides in that worksheet. Whenever i try to change the font color in that sheet, my excel's color palette goes blur
and then everything just freezes and turns black. This problem is happening only with Charts worksheet, when i try to change the color in other sheets, it works just, the problem is only with Charts sheet. File
size is 16 MB, there are just 10 pivot tables with some calculations and some calculated fields. There are no add-ins other than PowerPivot.
    Thanks,
    Shanker

    Hi,
In regarding of the issue, please provide us more information to assist you better.
Do you receive any error message?
Which Excel version are you using?  Excel 2013 or other?
Which workbook format are you using? XLS or XLSX?
Are you performing any specific task?
According to your description, this issue seems only occur with the special worksheet "Charts".
Firstly, I recommend we copy all of the content to a new/blank Excel file to test.
If it works fine, this issue might be caused by the "Charts" workbook itself. We'd better check the "Charts" workbook. Or re-build the file with a new workbook.
If it still makes Excel hang with a new file, this issue might due to the content. Please check the content first.
Secondly, we could follow below KB to troubleshoot this issue:
    https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2758592/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0
Thirdly, if the issue still exists, we may try to collect the Event log and App crash dump file to do advanced troubleshooting.
    Event log:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-Event-Viewer
    App crash dump file:
First enable app crash dump collection by copying following words into notepad, saving it as dump.reg and importing
    it:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\localdumps\EXCEL.EXE]
    "DumpFolder"=hex(2):63,00,3a,00,5c,00,63,00,72,00,61,00,73,00,68,00,64,00,75,\
      00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00
    "DumpCount"=dword:00000010
    "DumpType"=dword:00000001
    "CustomDumpFlags"=dword:00000000
    Then, open Excel
to repro the issue. If crash issue appeared, please find the crashdump file under c:\.
To further help you, please upload this file into Skydrive and shared the link here.
Also, you can try to analyze dump by yourself if you would like to:
How to analyze app crash dump file:

  • My MacBook was acting weird so I restarted it and when I login a white screen flashes and goes back to the login page. Help?

My MacBook was acting weird like sometimes I would log on and I wouldn't be able to type my password for a couple seconds, but it usually logged in after that. Then I left my computer open after installing the recent update after that all my applications were not responding. So I shut it down, when I turned it back on about an hour later it went to this loading screen and then to the login like usual. After I tried logging in a white screen flashed and it went back to the login/ password screen like nothing happened. Any ideas on what happened and what I can do to fix it?

    Reinstall OS X;
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Creative Sync Manager weird bug (featur

    Hi,
I'm a new Zen Touch 20GB owner although I've been an avid 3G iPod owner before it died on me some time ago. Anyway, I love my new Zen Touch for what it worth but if only if the bundled software would perform better. Well, first of all, I find Creative MediaSource Organizer to be quite a decent audio player despite the weird 4-panes navigation scheme. I have no problem with it yet though.
However, the accompanying sync plugin/module for my Zen Touch is very disappointing.
Before I start ranting, here are some details:
    Mp3 Player:
    Zen Touch 20GB
    Date of purchase: 0/2/2005
    Firmware: 2.0.05 (PlayForSure)
    Creative MediaSource:
Version 3.30.2 with updated driver for PlayForSure-enabled Zen Touch
Now back to the issue. First, it takes more than 0 seconds to initialise. Loading a big chunk of drivers for all MP3 players Creative have ever produced or what? Second, it doesn't have an option to delete files in my zen player which are not in my PC library. Third, it REFUSES TO REPLACE MP3 files that are already in the player eventhough the files are listed before the syncing procedure. You see, I edit ID3 tags of my music collection all the time so it is natural for me to have my modified ID3 tags to reflect on the files on my Zen Touch as well. OK sure, when I fire up the sync manager, it manages to detect that I have all these files with updated ID3 tags needed to be copied over to my Zen Touch but why in the name of creativity wouldn't it copy the files just like it should do? The files are already in my Zen Touch? Just replace them! I know what I want to do so just replace them! Or at least give me the "Do you want to replace the files?" box with "Yes" or "No" button. Why do I have to go into the directory structure of my zen player and delete the files manually in order to get the latest files copied over?
I hope this issue is fixed soon. Don't give me those "download the freeware NomadSync etc" advices. Why bother releasing the bundled software if it cannot do such a simple job of replacing files already in the player.
p/s: I read the "read before you post" post and I already did some searches in the forum for previously posted posts on the issue above but it seems that I'm the first one to discover it. Or maybe everyone else just doesn't care and decided to suck it up?Message Edited by anatilmizun on -09-2005 02:57 AM

well, I don't mind having to use other program for not-so-common jobs, but this is about replacing/overwriting files that are already in the player. I did mention that the sync manager is smart enough to make a list of files that it thinks should be synced to my zen touch but why won't it copy the files over? Isn't it weird if you sit and think about it's Isn't the real purpose of sync manager to copy files from PC to Zen or vice versa so that both places have the exact set of files? So what if the destination already has the files? The files are different, as detected by sync manager, so it should just overwrite them. It is the basic job the Sync Manager is supposed to do, isn't it's Why should I use another program?
It's like sync manager saying "hey, I think the files X, Y and Z in your MP3 player are outdated so I am going to sync them. WHoaaaa! There are already X, Y and Z in your MP3 player so I'm going to leave them alone" Sense any weirdness or craziness about this hypotethic monologue?Message Edited by anatilmizun on -0-2005 0:09 AM

  • Weird error message from aplay

Got a new system this week and everything is set up and working, except a few weird audio glitches.  Audio goes through the onboard HDMI thingie, but I'm not using HDMI; my monitor sends the HDMI signal to a different computer and VGA to my problem child.  So HDMI audio is inactive.  I finally got alsa and all the other audio apps to stop trying to use the nonexistent HDMI by default (resulting in a segfault) by simply deleting that module from libs/modules/{...}  I set up /etc/asound.conf to identify the analog PCM as the default (card 2).  But there's a further complication.  I also have an external sound adapter plugged into USB for my podcast work, and it shows up as card #1.
Anyway, thanks to the default settings in asound.conf I can get most programs to send output to the analog onboard card and external speakers.  But when I try to play a wave file with aplay, I get
aplay: set_params:1081: Sample format non available
That message came up in another thread in 2007, and the solution was to install an updated set of alsa-plugins... but pacman says mine are up to date and I assume any problem with them in 2007 is no longer an issue -- at any rate, aplay worked fine with wave files on my old PC.  mpg123 plays mp3 files fine, and mplayer handles wave files (et al) fine... it's just aplay that's giving me grief.
I do *not* run jack, except during my podcast because idjc requires it.
Anyone else familiar with that error and can recommend a fix?

    gday Andrew -
I believe that this is caused by setting the attribute exclusive-write-access=false in the orion-ejb-jar.xml file for your EJBs.
This is a known OC4J problem: a bug has been logged and it's been fixed here. The next minor release of OC4J will contain the fix for this.
In the meantime as a workaround removing the exclusive-write-access=false attribute from the orion-ejb-jar.xml files for your beans should get you going.
    cheers!
    -steve.
