X eats up my RAM

Hey guys,
my X server is eating up more and more of my memory the longer the system runs. I read this could be connected to applications with bad memory managment not cleaning up their pixmaps, but I don't think this is the reason because my netbook has pretty much the same software running all the time (slim, awesome wm, thunderbird, firefox, guake, dropbox, skype, some thunar instances) and X's memory consumption is at around 120mb after weeks of uptime – here on my desktop machine it is at 750mb after some days now!
Can somebody give me hint where to look at or how to inspect this further? It's quite annoying to have to reboot the system because the memory is leaking out of it step by step...
Is there a chance this can be related to my graphics card (Radeon HD 6550D) using the xf86-video-ati driver?

Sorry for the delay, I thought I had found the culprit (I had a systemd script for setting some power management options for my graphic card enabled) but now I'm back here with 500mb hogged up by X after a few days of hope...
So there are no startup scripts running, but wouldn't these show up as seperate processes instead of somehow silently adding up to X's memory usage in the backround?
I cannot see anything obvious from your data, but X obviously is using way too much RAM. Is there anything obvious in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file?

Theres another thing that came to my mind regarding this problem: My system has an onboard graphics chip (Radeon HD 6550D) which, however, I don't use. Could this be a problem?

Is there a solution yet for FCPX eating all the RAM?

FCPX is eating all my RAM and 'Memory Clean' keeps having to kick in so that the system doesnt stop completely. I have searched various forums and sites for an answer but noone seems to have a solution yet.
My events and projects are all on external (7200rpm) drives, I use Event Manager X to only open what I need per project, and background processing is off, but the RAM just keeps diving down until the system almost freezes. Very frustrating, especially if a client is present.

I do not believe that MC is capable of purging Video RAM thus the memory on your graphic card.
There are two RAM problems with FCPx or should I say OS X 10.6 & 10.7
10.6 & 10.7 does a bad job (10.6 worse than 10.7) @ setting RAM Free. This problem shows itself when overall system performance (I.e. opening a WIndow in the Finder) becomes a matter of 10 seconds etc...
There there is the Video RAM problem which is pertaining to FPCx and all versions of OS X. This problems shows itself after working intensively in FPCx... All one needs to do is to do LOTS of editing in the Timeline... On my setup with 1GB of Video RAM it will take approx. (depending on how many tasks (Edits) I am completing) 20 minutes to reveal itself. To begin with (after opening FCPX) it simply flies. No matter what I do, there is no lag just a VERY responsive app... Then after those 20 min. the CTI (Playhead) starts lagging and jumping in play. The skimmer starts choking, menus (Inspector etc) are opening at turtle-tempo... However, my Free System RAM is still @ about 10 GB.... so lots and lots of RAM... The video RAM is what is being used and NOT SET FREE.
Rebooting the Mac at this point is the only remedy. Which is OK... My rMBP boots in 7 seconds. So I am rebooting approx. every 30 minutes in a big session.
Whenever you guys experience these problems, try to take 5 minutes to recap and write to the Feedback. The more scenarios we can provide them with the better their chances of finding the culprit.
I personally find the FCPx crew to be HIGHLY responsive to feedback. THEY def. care

KDE 4.4 eating up more RAM than 4.3

Given the same settings on both versions and after numerous testing, upon bootup, KDE 4.4 is eating up more RAM than KDE 4.3, at least 25 MB more on the average. I realize the developers mentioned they fixed numerous bugs from the previous version, but shouldn't they be working on getting it lighter? Where's the most likely culprit for this additional RAM usage? Can it be attributed to the newer QT version 4.6.1, or something else? Opinions much appreciated, thanks.

Well, it really is that simple. If I have spare RAM, I want something on my computer to start using it.
Preload greatly increases speed on my end on some apps. Mostly big apps, like Openoffice and Kontact, which starts instantly with preload, and takes forever to run if I disable it. It doesn't increase boot time at all for me (I just start it in background, the rest of the loading happens after login and is not noticable on my system). Guess our milage are different.

True. I was making a general statement, not being specific to KDE. Memory leaks are obviously not RAM being put to good use.
In KDE 4.3 I found nepomuk all but useless. It slowed down my desktop and had a bad habbit of crashing Dolphin. Now it seems to run pretty well and I barely notice it, but it does take up a lot of my RAM compared to memory-usage in 4.3. But then, I feel like I'm getting something for my money. And I still got lots of RAM to spare, and no ideas on what to use it on.

ITunes eats all my RAM then crashes!

I don't know if it's a recent update or something, but recently iTunes, if left running unattended for a few hours, will eat up all my RAM (I have 12GB), causing over 11 million pageouts before becoming unresponsive. As soon as I force quit my memory is released, but I keep coming back to my Mac and finding that this has happened!
I've got lots of RAM and HD space free so I know it's not that - any ideas what I can do?

LR 3.3RC still eats all available ram and swaps during preview

I didn't see anything about ram issues being fixed in 3.3rc1... and can confirm I'm still seeing problems.
If I preview and rate 500 images LR starts swapping, as it ate 16gig of ram. After that, everytime you preview a couple of more images, it swaps another chunk of ram to disk and allocates more.
Personally, I think this is a bit excessive...
Any word on when this will be fixed?

It is a known and unfortunate limitation of how our current lens profile installation/uninstallation works. The workaround is to reinstall LR 3.2.

What's eating a gig of RAM?

I have the new aluminum iMac with 4GB of RAM. On a fresh startup, I have about 3.39GB of ram. After a day or so, that will drop down to about 3.2, then 3.11, then 3, then under 3. Even when it is sitting there not being used, everytime I wake it up I always have less RAM, but what gets me is the fact that I only have 3.39 when I first bootup. Does leopard eat 700MB of RAM on startup? I have 4 login items I believe.

I have looked at activity monitor and don't see anything extrainious running, but I could be wrong. I have 2 widgets, iStatpro, and the default weather one. I also have an external hard drive always connected and turned on, but not using time-machine.

If the "Wired" + "Active" segments aren't growing mysteriously, there's no
reason for concern.
Be aware that "Inactive" memory is essentially the same as "Free" memory,
except that the OS happens to "know" what it contains -- so it need not
be re-fetched from disk if some app asks for it. As long as the memory
would otherwise be idle, it costs nothing to keep the the data handy --
but only until some process has a better use for the memory space.
For example, if I power-up my iMac and run an app that reads a 1GB file
from disk, it takes 15-20 seconds to fetch the data. However, if I close
the app, and then immediately re-run it, the second "read" of the same
data file takes less than half a second -- because the OS "remembered"
that the file contents were already in "inactive" memory.
OTOH, if I load/run a bunch of other apps that need that memory space,
the OS "forgets" the old data and allocates memory from the "inactive"
pool -- in exactly the same way that it would allocate "free" memory.

Weirdest Logic behavior (Deleting tracks will eat up RAM)

Hi,
I've been a Logic 9 user for quite a few years (4-5yrs at the least) and have never experienced anything like this.
I'm currently working on a film project which requires using at least 25-30 Kontakt loaded tracks. My computer, 2.6Ghz i7 16gb Ram running on 10.7.5, has been handling this ram/cpu eating project fairly well for the past few weeks. I've been very careful while working and I'd purge any unused samples loaded on Kontakt. Usually I'd have at least about half of my RAM unused (6-7GB). Even in an intense action scene my computer was rarely frozen.
Now, I'm done with my sequencing and for the past few days I've been spending my days exporting/ bouncing in place my tracks so that I could mix them once they are converted to audio tracks. Once I'm done converting midi to audio tracks I always pack them into the folder and delete the rest of midi tracks.
THE WEIRDEST EVENT OCCURS WHEN I'M DELETING MY TRACKS, LOGIC WILL EAT UP MY RAM LIKE MY SISTER EATING A CHOCOLATE. Deleting a single track would consume AT LEAST 1gb of memory loss. After deleting 5-6 tracks my activity monitor shows that my computer only has about 4-6mb of ram left. By then, my logic session is nearly frozen and I have to run my memory cleaner app to free up my ram space.
This is perhap the most bizzard logic phenomenon that's ever occured and I'm very puzzled at this moment. I guess the best solution at this point for me is to reinstall logic 9 but at least I'd like to hear opnions from Logic gurus out there. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It doesn't jump for me however I'd thought I put my 2 cents in and ask if anyone else gets this behavior:
I'm in a similar situation. I want to 'clean up' the session. I have a bunch of xtra tracks I didn't use or multiple instances of the same track, from 'mute and create new track' feature. As I start to delete the extra tracks, when I get to the 3 - 6th track, Logic will re-initialize the audio core driver. All virtual instruments will 'blank' out, and it will take anywhere from 8 - 20 seconds for Logic to 'boot' them all again. It was acting very bad a month or two ago, it would re-initialize after 3 deletes. Lately, It's more like if I delete 8 or more tracks. (I usually don't have that many to delete) This is not consistant, it DOESN'T always happen.
Is anyone else experiencing this?

High RAM usage when system is 'idle' (EtreCheck)

First timer here. Ok here's my question :
I recently bought a secondhand Macbook pro 15 inch. For me it's a huge upgrade coming from a 2009 13 inch Macbook pro. Because a friend of mine wants to buy my old one I was doing some diagnostics on the 13 inch, which has 4 GB of RAM, and found out it had a lot of inactive RAM usage and wired usage, almost 2 GB, due to a lot of launchdaemons etc which were hogging the RAM. I used terminal to kill these agents and deamons and now that system is running smooth again. Maybe it's wise to mention that the 13 inch runs on ML.
3 days ago I did a clean Yosemite install on the 15 inch, swapped the HDD for a SSD. And already the activity monitor shows a whopping 4,28 GB of RAM usage while I'm typing this with just safari open. I thought I could do the same trick as I did with my 13 inch but it didn't help, had some java deamons and helpers and deleted those. In terminal I looked up everything via launchctl list and there's nothing unusual going on as far as I can see. I had VirtualBox for one day but uninstalled it using their uninstaller. I have no clue what's eating all this RAM. Please help me out so I can be a proud owner of my second macbook for atleast 5 years to come. Thanks in advance.

The page outs indicate the OS has not recently swapped any memory to disk.
Apple made changes to 10.9 that are the same on 10.10. Memory will be used as much as possible. It is the fastest storage on the system, keeping it free is a waste of your time - data loads fastest from RAM.

The system also frees 'cache' memory when another process has more need to use it. Eventually it will swap to disk (which is slow) so the OS also compresses memory before swapping is needed.
Please avoid killing launchd jobs, many will simply restart or relaunch again later. Eventually you may kill one that hangs the OS & corrupts the disk via a forced shutdown.
I do suspect you may see issues when RAM does get low, but there is no evidence of that here. The memory pressure graph will show red when swapping - every other colour is fine. Wait until you see red & then note the top memory users.
If you don't want java installed you need to find removal instructions & get it all off the system, simply stopping the update checks will leave Java in an old state - terrible for security.
Also do you know what 'Live' is? It crashed recently, if it keeps doing that it may be worth a look, however it may just be one if the things that was effects by the killing spree

Amount of RAM useful limited to processor speed?

I have heard that at a certain point the amount of RAM you throw in your computer won't help past a certain processor speed. If this is true, is there a chart out there that will show these limits?
Or if anyone has any opinions as far as a:

Without a list of applications, you could be starving your apps, especially if they need to be open and active. If you work on large photoshop files and not smallish, it is impossible almost to have too much (and you would need a PCIe G5 to get 10-12GB RAM).
Check page-out; number of swap files; whether you are generating swap files.
just scanning and retouching can eat up 2GB RAM.
OS X uses free memory to cache windows, disk I/O, and those won't show up looking at Activity Monitor.
Virtual memory can be 'requested' or 'allocated' but not used, too.
I saw people with 512-768MB be shocked at what a difference even light use (email, web, writing, etc) it was to upgrade their G5 to 1.5GB RAM. There are also programming changes that go into a G5 that are totally different from G4s.
But it has nothing to do with cpu, front side bus.
And no matter what, a nice fast 10K Raptor boot drive always helps

Inactive RAM not reclaimed?

I recently got my 27'' iMac. Today I had a lot of apps opened and noticed something really weird: My iMac became really sluggish even though the apps weren't that CPU intensive and CPU wasn't used that much. I then noticed my system memory readings seemed kind of odd:
Free: 40MB
Wired: 480MB
Active: 2.3GB
Inactive: 1.14GB
Swap Used: 1.73GB
I think the computer became sluggish because the RAM was full. But what I really wonder about: Why does mac os start swapping RAM to the hard drive when there is 1.1GB of inactive RAM? Shouldn't the OS reclaim that RAM first which would be much faster than swapping all the time? It was kind of annoying since I was watching an HD movie and it lagged even though CPU usage was low and there was 1.1GB of inactive, fast RAM the system could have claimed.
Ideas on this?

Since I have 4Gb. RAM, a new updated MBP (using basic aps - mail, ical, safari, address-book, itunes,finder,ms.office, adium and skype, - and I do not use PS, FC or VM's) - it doesn't make much sense (to me) to realize (and I do) that I need to upgrade to 8Gb. in order to have a proper and smooth performance (that it should already be), just because the system 'eats' literally the ram installed.
And of course, since the RAM upgrade is not what it could be called "cheap", and not a solution - I can't afford it right now at that prices - I can't keep searching and trying to find a workaround to solve this...
I simply can not understand how I do have page ins/outs and swap use, considering that the inactive memory (usually more than 1Gb. ) is still there, and it's noticeable when the system - sluggish - has to access the hard disk.
And how after a day, 2 or more...the system starts to become fatter.

And how, anyone seems to bother, ask, and complain about it.
Well, some people did, but mostly the answers to them are mainly that the system is ok, nothing's wrong, and just upgrade or permissions repair.¿?
Well I'm may be, a "demanding" user, but my expectations are according to my light-user-tasks and the machine used and its expected performance...or may be I have to start restarting my system every day to avoid it. (or do the permissions repair)
And that there is not response, neither solution still 10.6.4.
It's like no one seems to see it.
Just a few. And most users tend to think that there's nothing wrong about it.
But I do not get it.
Meanwhile, the only thing I can do is, pray for that one of these to things happens: either next 10.6.x update fix it, or RAM prices decreases... but I can't see other options right now.

Another Usable RAM thread.

Hi. I have read through the threads about the windows 32-bit ram issue. I have disabled switchable graphics yet I still only have 2.49 GB out of 4 GB
I justed added a new 2 gig stick. What else could be eating up the ram?

Disabling switchable graphics may not be enough to fix the issue. I am assuming you are forcing discrete. You can download the latest notebook drivers from the AMD website or download the non-switching version of the drivers from Lenovo's site. The switchable drivers will still reserve the ram for the integrated graphics which will lower your free ram.

MSI P67 GD65 and 1600mhz RAM

Picked up a MSI P67a-GD65 to replace my faulty (and by faulty, not SATA port faulty)Gigabyte UD3P. Anyways. I had a stable overclock of 4.7ghz on that board so I assumed w/ close voltages Id hit that on this board. Ive spent the last 2 days trying to get it stable to no avail. Dropped the speed to 4.5ghz even w/ same voltages and nothing.
Finally I dropped my RAM speed from 1600mhz c8 to 1333 c9. System is stable at 4.7 no problem now. The ram has been used for awhile without any issues on 2 other boards (P55a-UD3 and P67a-UD3P) and memtest checks out. Is there a problem w/ the 1600mhz strap on this board? Ive read other people have issues with certain RAM speeds as well (although it varys). Specs below!

Progressively Eating Memory - Tomcat Web App

Hello,
I'm noticing my web application is consuming way too much memory, and in a few hours the server (which has 1 GB of RAM) starts to swap. And BDB Xml seems to have problems with that, cause it gives this error:
erro: com.sleepycat.dbxml.XmlException: Error: DbEnv::txn_begin: Cannot allocate memory, errcode = DATABASE_ERROR
Now, I'm trying to figure out what is not being released, when it should be. I'm using a Singleton for Environment startup / shutdown, and reuse only this object (and also a session object) for referencing the environment. I guess it's not the case the app is trying to open many environments.
What else could I check? Should I use delete() after every operation? As time goes, I get about 84 instances of Tomcat.... it really eats up the RAM.

When using the Java API, you should be calling delete() after you have finished using all of the major objects:

When will Firefox consume less ram?

I use Mozilla Firefox as my primary web browser, it's excellent in almost every aspect except, it consumes too much ram.
Sometimes/most it eats up to 200-300 MB and it's not acceptable, will Firefox receive an update which will stop from eating so much ram?
I've looked for the tweaking to do in "about:config" it hasn't lower it down than the normal and also "Firefox Optimizer" it tells the user that it's consuming 400kb's but it's not true, only hiding the real facts.
As a everyday user of Firefox browser, I really want my number one browser to not be slow nor eat my ram!

Even in safe mode, Firefox 4 takes over 1500 megs of virtual memory and 800 megs shared. This is on a laptop with 2G ram, so it's almost half of actually consumed memory. I have a lot of tabs hidden behind Panorama, but those are not in active use so I'd prefer them not to be loaded at all at startup, only when I try to access them.
