Is anyone having problems with the computer randomly shutting down on you while playing games? I bought this computer specifically for gaming and the computer shuts down on my mid-game while playing. It does not shut down during any other applications. Can anyone help. Thanks.

I have been having this same issue. I have an 875 as well and started seeing the issue about a two months after purchases. I run a temp monitor on my laptop and the one thing that is always consistent is that the GPU temp started getting exceptionally hot i.e. Watching a youtube video and pushing 104C.
Sent the laptop back to Toshiba (went back and forth) and finally got it back saying that the "heat pipe" was cracked. Temp issue was not gone but much much better. Would still run hot but as long as ambient was below 68F I was OK. Recently problem has been getting worse. Got serious and started tinkering and found that the laptop can run without shutting down and nominal temps while on battery power but as soon as I plug in the A/C the temp on the GPU starts sky rocketing and eventually the computer shutdown. Back to service for now, I really hope this problem can finally get resolved.

The interesting thing is if I plug out the power cable and start playing the game with the battery as the only source of power, there is no shutdown. But the battery lifespan comes shorter after every use and I only have about an hour to play a game before I willingly recharge the battery or plug it in and watch the pc shut down in seconds.

Sounds like your laptop fans/vents are clogged with dust and thus causing the laptop to overheat, which causes the shutdown. The reason for the playability when on battery is that x505 Qosmios actually throttle the GPU and CPU preventing them from doing too much "power draining" activities when on battery.
You can try using compressed air (you can buy at Office Depot) to clean the fans/vents ; use short bursts. I've already read of people using a shop-vac to suck the dust out.
Just to verify it is a overheating problem, download this utility which allows you to measure the temperature of the CPU and GPU.

As a comparison, my x505-q8102X CPU and GPU idle at low 40s Celsius.

Qosmio X505-Q875 - Can't install my work software package

I have to say I'm extremely disappointed in Toshiba. I'm a small business owner and use some pretty advanced software for which I pretty much need a gaming style laptop for. After looking at many different companies, including custom high end builders, I settled on a x505-q875 that I purchased from Newegg.
First of all, I couldn't even install my primary work software package. This software uses a USB hasp for anti-piracy. The HASP wouldn't install, no matter what I did. After exhausting my options, I opted for a clean install of Windows. I have a full Windows 7 license which allows for laptop installation. So I wiped the laptop clean and started with a clean slate. I go onto the Toshiba website to get the component drivers and ...whoa!...they aren't there! Luckily for me, and a couple of hours into the process, I did manage to find a driver for the Nvidia GTS 360m. Fortunately, some guy had posted online a workable driver that supports the 360M. That one could have sunk me. This laptop had to be operational for a business trip I am going on tomorrow.
I hope Toshiba reps at least browse this forum and if so, these are the points I would like to make.
1) If you have released units to resellers of any product, there HAS to be driver support online. I never make backup discs as I've never had to. Every time I ever needed a driver, it was on the support site. There is no excuse for this. This product doesn't have a "release date". As a consumer, when I purchase something, I expect the support to be available when the product hits the shelves.
2) In your "detailed" product specs, how about mentioning who supplied the wi-fi cards? Simply saying "Wi Fi Card" really isn't going to help anyone fishing for a driver. Thankfully, you guys haven't changed and it was still the RealTek wireless card.
3) It is important that Windows be left as vanilla as possible, for people like myself who use these things for business. A lot of business productivity software does not like being installed on OEM modded versions of an operating system. I don't know if it were the mods or the 50 tons of bloatware on the machine but when I can't get a USB device to install, thats a serious issue. As for the bloatware, how about making most of it downloadable content? Most people have no need for most of the stuff you cram into the machine.
So in closing, a disappointing experience so far. I hope the machine is problem free from this point on because I invested 7 hours in diagnosing, searching, pulling my hair out, reinstalling operating systems, etc. Now that the slate is clean, the thing works like a champ with my software.

Qosmio X505-Q875 and other notebook series are equipped with different WLan cardsIntel, Atheros or Realtek. At the bottom of the unit you can find a label which contains a info what WLan card has been installed or go to device manger and check VendorID to get details about WLan chip manufacturer. ;)

Dont understand what you want to say and what you mean by bloatware but the point is that new generation notebooks supports a lot of different features which need to be controlled by software
Of course you can remove everything what you want but you should not wonder if some feutures like FN buttons, multimedia buttons, face reorganization, power saving eco mode etc will not functions
If you are not able to install the 3rd USB device then you should get in contact with this USB device manufacture. Maybe there are some Win 7 compatibility issues
I installed Win 7 on my Toshiba notebook and everything is running like a dream all devices are recognized. I have managed to collect the Win 7 drivers at my own hand but this is not really a problem for common notebook user like me who know how to use google and search in internet

Accident during BIOS update x505-Q875

I was in the middle of updating my BIOS firmware when my computer suddenly bluescreened...Obviously I cant boot the computer now. Is there a way to update the bios from this situation on a x505-Q875 or is there a second BIOS chip as a back up?

Qosmio X505 Hardware Lockups: 3 for 3

Hello, Toshibers--
I bought a Qosmio X505-Q870 from Fry's last Saturday. After about 12 hours of use, it locks up. Hard lock up: No mouse, no keyboard, nothing. After the second lockup in a few hours, I took it back.
I got the replacement Sunday night, and it started locking up, too, after just a few hours. Any sane person would have given up on the Qosmio at this point, but I love the screen. It's just so easy on the eyes.
Besides, hey, with Fry's who knows. So I order the Qosmio X505-Q875 from NewEgg.com. And, sure enough, the package from NewEgg has a genuine Toshiba Factory Seal on it, where the Fry's machines didn't.
Tragically, after a few hours, the new machine locks up. Well, hell.
At least, at this point, I don't think it's a fluke hardware issue. I suspect drivers. I'm downloading the Windows updates while I write this—this is the second time I'm writing this because the machine locked up during the download/update—but the updates don't look that promising.
I had put up GodMode on the first two machines before they froze, so I thought that might be it, but no dice. The third one crashed with no GodMode. They've frozen twice with the webcam on. But they freeze with nothing in particular going on, too.
The three installs have certain things in common. My feeling is that in no way should any of these steps be cause for hard lockups. I've not even gotten to installing my development software, and the machines don't seem to be running hot, and the fans seem okay, when they lock up.
But here are the things I do, in the order that I've done them, for all three machines.
Start IE, install Chrome. All subsequent browsing is done with Chrome.
Install Flash for Chrome.
Install Pidgin.
Install Opera, set up mail.
Install Sun VirtualBox. I haven't actually run this on two of the three machines, but it's been installed.
On the first two machines I installed OpenOffice.org. The third one locked up before I had a chance to.
This is my tale of woe. I do love the machine, but if it hard locks every few hours, it has obviously limited utility.
I've updated windows and killed the webcam app. If that doesn't cure it, I'll kill everything and see if that helps.

Eh. It's good enough for me. I definitely looked at some log that was supposed to say what had happened and it gave no information except to say there had been an improper shutdown. (I guess that would have to be the Event Log, but MS changes the locations of all these things enough with every version that I can't be sure.)
While MS's track record is abysmal, I haven't seen a genuine hardware lockup—that wasn't actually due to a hardware problem (RAM, MoBo, HD being most common three)—since Windows 2000. I did skip Vista however.
Search: "windows 7 crashing flash". I doubt that is hardware related, no need to RMA before exhausting the software side.
Of course, I did that extensively with laptop two and three, since the odds of dual hardware failures in exact the same way seemed improbable. What I saw then and what I see now is that these search results talk about Windows 7 with Flash causing Firefox/Chrome crashing but not hardware lockups.
Well, wait, I do see one now. All during overt Flash activity. The weird thing is that this machine locks up even if Flash isn't apparently being used. (But I think there are some resident Flash programs that aren't always visible.)
Anyway, unfortunately for Toshiba, the onus falls upon them to give me a working machine. That's the cost of doing business with MS. And they're probably going to end up with two returns (unless Fry's just re-boxes them). If Windows 7 is unstable, they should ship the machines with XP until 7 is ready.
Figures, though: Only MS would take a stable OS and replace it with an unstable one.

Battery stuck at 39%

I have had my charger plugged in for several days now and my battery status is 39%. If I remove the power cord the laptop dies. If the laptop is off it will still be 39% when I turn it on. I wasn't using the laptop for about 2.5 months, before I had no issues with the battery.

Qozmio blue screens when display powers down on Win 7 64 bit

I put the latest NVidia drivers on and all windows updates are applied, but it will not turn off the display without blue screen. Running an experiment now to see if the whole computer will sleep OK.

This one has an easy solution.
If you want your laptop to work right, never get device drivers from the device maker - and don't get them from Microsoft's Windows update either. Get them only from Toshiba. It's because laptop designers often tweak the chips/circuits and associated drivers.
You'll find that Toshiba does not update video drivers unless bugs are found. That makes some unhappy - maybe you.

Games will NOT stop freezing!

Own a Qosmio x505-q875, and games ALWAYS freeze on me. I"ll play for anywhere between 10 - 45 minutes, and then the entire system freezes. Screen stops moving, sound ceases, all input methods stop working. The only solution is a hard reset.
This has happened with over 10 different graphic-intensive 3d applications so far... World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, etc...
I've already installed the latest drivers from Toshiba, and from nVidia (in that order) to no avail. I'm also running a $60+ ThermalTake cooler (250mm fan, steel construction) made specifically for laptops this large, AND I've installed and run EVGA's Precision software to try to decrease the GPU load / heat. I've also gone through endless restarts, turning off services one by one, including turning off ALL services. NOTHING IS WORKING.
Otherwise, it's an awesome machine, but I bought this because I wanted to play games on it, and it's the one thing I can't do at all. Does anyone else have this problem, or better yet a solution? Does this thing have to go in for repairs? Already been on the phone with tech support for endless hours of them leading me through all the basics... they can't seem to help me at all. (Basically worthless.)

If you are running Vista I have found in online games for some reason you have to always run the game as admin. Simply right click the shortcut and click run as administrator this worked for me. I play WOW and AION

X505-Q870 problems

This is getting to be a bit frustrating. The reviews that I have read about this laptop have been phenomenal but so far I am less than impressed.
I had just bought a x505-Q870 two weeks ago. The purpose of the laptop is a work development machine. It started acting funny a couple days after the week long return policy ended, of course.
It started by the screen would pop up with random pixels that would turn random colors. Dragging around a window over the pixels would allow them to be refreshed. I thought that being that I was running Windows 7 x64 on a set of nvidia drivers from last November would cause this so I didn't worry so much.
Then I loaded VMWare and found that since then Windows would BSOD about 2-3 times a day. I chalked this up to the video drivers as well. I restored the machine using the Toshiba Recovery and upgraded to Windows 7 x64 Professional. This seemed to fix the problem for now.
The part that is worrying me that is starting today is that the machine either BSODs and shutdown when I close the lid to put it to sleep or BSODs when I try to wake it up. The other symptom that I had just recovered from is that to work around the sleep issue, I had decided to change the close lid setting to shutdown the pc instead of putting it to sleep. When I opened the lid, the machine would not power on. I had then noticed that even though the power was plugged in the battery light was not on. I had unplugged the power and removed the battery, waited 10-15 seconds, and reinstalled the battery. THis seemed to have fixed it for now.
I have updated the video drivers today and updated the bios from v2.00 to v2.20 just now.
Has anyone else had these kind of issues?? I can't return it to the store cause of the return policy expired and I can't be without a machine for 4-6 weeks because it is a work machine so I am hoping that there is something someone has tried that fixed it.

I had the same problems. I reinstalled windows with the disc and then just did a custom install to ultimate so i could get rid of all the stuff toshiba gives you. I then install the apps i needed from the disc you make with recovery. then moved all the programs i wanted to keep from windows.old and updated all the files. I get no more BSOD or pixil errors like you got also. I did notice the new drivers 260.89 did give me the pixils but i went back to 258 and i have no problems at all. This is what i did to fix the problem, main thing is the stuff toshiba puts in the dvd recovery is what i believe causes most of the problems besides the bad driver from nvidia.

Toshiba Qosmio x505-q870 Issues

Hi, i'm a proud owner of this laptop and its served me very well for the past 3 years.
Recently i'm having some heat issues where i think the computer is starting to hang/freeze around 75c. I've checked some other forums and folks say thermal shutdown is MUCH higher than that so i'm kinda curious at why its happening. Naturally i've cleaned out all the vents, got a laptop cooler, got rid of as much bloatware, and minimized my HDD usage for as much efficiency as i can squeeze out of the machine. Not too sure what the next step would be to try to minimize the heat. At rest with the cooler fan i'm looking at 50c while during intense gaming 65-75c, which is where the freezing, BSOD, and other bad things occur.
I've also ugraded my RAM. i bought 2 sticks of 4 gig Patriot PC3-12800 1600 MHz CL11 1.35v RAM, which are technically compatible as they are the same speed and size as the ram also sold via the Toshiba website. My first game with the new RAM showed massive improvement in FPS. However shortly into the next round it froze up where i needed to do a cold shutdown. Thinking nothing of it, I restarted and began another game and the same thing happened again where it froze. After that point i stopped to reassess my options. Heat was also extremely high, but that was nothing out of the norm for my current situation.
After some quick research on what i shoud do, i ran Memtest86 which came back clean after 20 passes, updated my BIOs from v2.3 to v2.9, and tried to get into the BIOs to try to change the voltage being sent into the RAM. My old ram had 1.5v while the new ones were at 1.35v. I ran the program cpu-z to see what voltage it was being run at, and it was set at 1.28v so apparently there's something going on. Unfortunately in the BIOs i couldnt find how to change the voltage settings, so i'm currently at a loss what to do. Some more reading has brought to my attention that the fans might not also be working at full capacity. I also tried to see how i can adjust my fan speeds in the BIOs and again came to a loss.
What do i do to try to minimize my heat burden and try to get my RAM integrated smoothly?

Re: x505 - "turn off the display" not working correctly

To make a long story short, I was having a boatload of problems with my Toshiba Qosmio X505. I spoke to tech support and they had me reinstall the OS and completely wipe the computer. All has been well for days until today!
For some reason every time my screen turns off (for power saving), I can't get my computer to respond. I don't know if it's sleeping, going into hibernation mode, or even the difference between any of that stuff but when I press buttons, move the mouse/touch pad, try the media keys, the power button, nothing makes my computer come back. I have to hold the power button and completely restard the computer to get back on again.
Why is this happening? It was working fine for days, but I think it has something to do with the last NVIDIA driver update I downloaded. That's the main change I've made to the computer yesterday and now it seems to be doing it. Does anyone have any recommendations? How can I make my computer quit doing this? I have all my black screen options off for now but that doesn't seem like a good solution for this problem it used to work fine.

hi, yes my new Qosmio X500/02G is the same when i set power options so my screen turn off after 10 minutes it will not respond with mouse or keyboard like before.
i bought this laptop as 1 year old, and it had a fresh recovery done when i got it, so only had the nvidia graphic driver from 1 year ago (version 189.00) and the screen will recover ok.
i then install the new 270.00 nvidia driver and now the screen wont recover unless i do a complete shutdown using a hard press of the power button.
looks like i will uninstall this new driver back to old ones.
also i notice when this new driver is installed, the driver will scrash for a few seconds where the screen goes black, and comes back on with message to say the "graphic driver stopped responding and has now recovered" so maybe this is also the reason.

Unable to capture startup and shutdown event of Photoshop in automation Plugin.

I am creating an automation plugin and I want to register some events. I have seen listener plugin sample to register event in startup and unregister event in shutdown. I have used same code in my plugin but I am unable to capture the startup nad shutdown event of Photoshop. On clicking the menu item of my plugin the calls come inside the AutoPluginMain but during the startup or shutdown of plugin, the calls does not come inside the AutoPluginMain.
I am unable to detect the cause of the problem. Can someone please giude me??

Yes, I am working on Windows. As you suggested, I compiled .rc file but the compile option for .r file was disabled. After compiling the .rc file, I again rebuild the complete project and tested my build. But still I was not able to achive the desired result.

Lock ups, Difficult starts, reboot/restart = shutdown

My computer locks up and will not "Restart", if I tell it to "restart" it shuts down. The "Restart" button also causes the computer to shutdown.

I also ran a Hardware Test and all the hardware seems ok.
I've taken the battery out of the PMU and it doesn't seem to have any issues starting without that battery in place.
I'm really confused. Why all of a sudden would my computer hate me like this?

You can use this Apple Document to test your QS power supply with a voltmeter, without having to remove it from the Mac. It references a different model, but the only difference is that the voltage at pin 22 is 25 volts on a QuickSilver PSU rather than the 28 volts shown for the Gigabit Ethernet Mac. The procedural steps are the same...
Does the Mac restart properly with the battery removed from the logic board? Does the battery test out okay, or can you swap it with another one?

Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!

Macbook problems, hard drive crash, random shutdown, freezes

I bought my macbook used a few months ago, and it worked flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago. The system started freezing and not booting (getting folder icon instead of apple at startup). I ran drive setup and tried to repair the drive, but this did not fix the problem. DiskWarrior also could not fix it. I pulled the drive and installed a new hard drive, as I wanted a larger capacity anyways. All my problems appeared fixed for about two weeks, then similar problems began occurring. I backed up all the files I needed to an external firewire drive and attempted to reformat the new internal drive. Drive Setup says it can not reformat the drive - can't mount it and if it does, the drive disappears while in the process of formatting. I pulled the new drive and am having it replaced under warranty. I am using the firewire drive to run my computer, and this seemed to work fine for a day or two until the computer just started shutting down with no warning. Everything goes black, including the little light on the front of the computer. I have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds before it lets me start the computer back up. I had read this may be a memory issue, so I ran memtest and it says the memory is fine (I need to do it in single user mode still, however). I also tried pulling both sticks of ram. They are both 1GB crucial memory. I put each stick in by itself and tried it in both slots and was able to reproduce the shutdown issue with any ram configuration of either stick.
After all this, I realized the firewire drive was only running 10.5, so I updated all the software through software update, and it is now running 10.5.2. It seems to be working better as I have not experienced a random shutdown yet, but I'm anticipating it may start back up soon. Today, however I experienced a different problem - the screen froze on me and the only way to get anything to happen was to force a shutdown with them power button. It's restarted and seems to be working fine again for now.
I've run some logs and here's some things I've found:
When the latest freeze happened, I got this repeated over 100 times:

Should there be anything else I can check? I would run Apple Hardware Utilities, but I don't have the original disks, just the Leopard installer. I have Disk Warrior, but it seems strange this would happen with multiple systems and drives. I'd like to get Techtool Pro, but haven't had the money/time to order it yet.

Yeah, I think it's the HDD. I was just worried that the RAM was bad and corrupted the HDD or something, but given the symptoms I think you guys are right. Ordered a 7200RPM 320GB HDD off Amazon Prime...will be here tomorrow
I'll post how it goes after I finish installing it. I'm backing up as I type.
I wonder if I can fix the ir port and the sleep indicator light when I install the hard-drive. The sleep indicator light never turns off. It stays on as long as my computer is on, only turns off when I shut it down.
