X61 Ethernet connects, finds dhcp and disconnects (Linux)

Hello,
I've been having a problem with my X61 (which is in my opinion fantastic if i could just get this one thing to work!), I'm a college student who's running linux so i can both learn and become more proficient in computers. The wireless works, and has always worked for me with little issue. However, recently (and by recently i mean in the last 6 months) the Ethernet card has stopped working. When i plug my ethernet cable in while the computer is on AC power but not turned on the connection light is steady and the activity light flashes. When it's on the connection light only blinks. No activity whatsoever. Also, the computer recognizes the card, and tries to connect with it. However, when i run DHCPCD (i'm doing connections by hand right now) it connects, sees that there's a server and asks for a lease, then immediately disconnects and retries until it times out. I've heard of the X61 being vunerable to a eeProm rewriting bug involving a certain linux kernel and I can say i was running ubuntu at the time (which was affected by the bug but only under certain circumstances). so i don't know if the bug accidentally re-wrote my EEprom containing the firmware drivers and only re-wrote enough that it fails connection somtimes. If someone knows how to check the eeprom with a md5 or something i'd be happy do to it or if someone could provide me with the firmware from a copy taken from theirs i would be indebted. I'm running an 82566MM Gigabit card.
If you have any insight into this problem please let me know as i aquired it shortly after my warrenty expired and i've been desperately trying to figure out what's going on for a couple months.
Thanks in advance,
Kravlin

  • We have an airport extreme wifi in house, but also want to set up a hardwired ethernet connection for gaming and streaming of netflix.  The computer only sees one or the other not both at same time.

We have a new iMac 2.9ghz and are running an airport extreme set up in house with several express entenders.  The problem is that our son is streaming netflix and doing on line gaming and hogging all the band width.  Time Warner tech suggested a hard wired ethernet connection to computer base sattion next to computer so that it can have direct conenction to internet.  After much fishing of wire the connection worked great, but the wifi connection for the house is gone.  I unplugged the ethernet connection and everything is fine.  I read the articles about adjusting network preferences, but the issue seems to be in the extreme not in the computer.  the connection goes from cable modem to extreme, from extreme to house and to hard wired conenction to other computer.  Do we need a splitter before the extreme?

No. Something else is going on.
Your son may be hogging all the bandwidth but your wireless network should never simply disappear. Moreover, if your son isn't doing anything the available bandwidth for other devices should remain unaffected.
I suspect that something is miswired, and from what you describe I suspect that link is between the Extreme and the "other computer".
The way to accomplish what you propose is
Modem > Ethernet cable to Extreme's WAN port
Extreme's LAN ports > wired Ethernet devices.
There should be nothing but an Ethernet cable linking an Extreme LAN port and any other wired device. If you run out of available LAN ports on the Extreme, you need to by an "Ethernet switch" - they are not expensive, but don't call it a "splitter" or you will only confuse yourself. The switch would be connected to one of the Extreme's LAN ports, and you would connect additional devices to it. You can also use one of your Expresses for that purpose, assuming it is the current generation model with two Ethernet ports.

  • How to set up TC for ethernet connections to MacBook and MacMini?

    Hi MacGurus
    Current setup:
    - ISP provided modem for incoming signal.
    - TC (1st generation from 2008) connected to ISP modem via ethernet cable (TC port: the one next to USB port with roughly an O-symbol). Is this the correct port to use?
    - Our ISP provider only supports 5 IP addresses and in our network we also have PCs/mobiles occupying IP addresses.
    - The back-up from MacBook to TC works fine through the connected ethernet cable between MacBook and one of the three ethernet (not the above mentioned O-symbol) ports on the TC.
This is what I would like to do:
    - Ethernet cables from TC to both a MacBook (from 2008) and a MacMini (from 2008), i.e not use wireless transmission
    - Switch off wireless function on TC.
    - Use the TC to provide IP addresses for both the MacBook and MacMini in order to leave the other IP addresses for the PCs/mobiles.
Is there any other information needed from me in order to help solving the problem?
Thank you very much in advance.
    Cheers/WA

Thx for quick response, below some "answers".
It helps if you spell out a few things.
    - ISP provided modem for incoming signal.
Who is the ISP? And what model is the modem provided? Is this dsl or cable or fibre or something else? *** ADSL
    - TC (1st generation from 2008) connected to ISP modem via ethernet cable (TC port: the one next to USB port with roughly an O-symbol). Is this the correct port to use?
The answer depends.. is the ISP modem also a router? Is the TC setup to bridge or route? *** Yes, the modem is also a wirelss & ethernet router. *** I do not know if the TC is bridge or route, how can I see that?
    - Our ISP provider only supports 5 IP addresses and in our network we also have PCs/mobiles occupying IP addresses.
Here is where I am getting confused actually.. Most ISP supply just 1 IP.. the router translates that single public IP to all the computer and devices on your network which run on a private IP network.
Is the ISP giving you 5 public addresses?? Are they ipv4 or ipv6? Setting up blocks of ip addresses is more a business setup.. where multiple devices need direct internet access eg servers.. without being hidden behind a NAT router.
So the more info you can give the better.
*** Sorry for confusion. It is likely that the ISP provider gives 1 IP address, and that the modem generates up to 5 IP addresses. It is most certainly only a standard private setup, no business setup.
What IP addresses are you getting now?
If you plug ethernet to the macbook and mini now.. and turn off wireless, what IP address are they getting??
If the TC is in router mode they should get 10.0.1.x IP and be able to ping and share with each other.. without needing to do anything.
*** I am now connected to the modem (wireless), as I cannot connect through the ethernet cable.

  • Roaming (ethernet connected base station) and wireless extended network at the same time. Good idea?

I have a Time Capsule (6th gen.) which is my main base station. I also have a number of airport extremes around the house. I only use them in the client mode, i.e. they just join the network so that I can stream audio to devices connected to them.
As I had bad reception in the garden, I installed my old dual-band airport extreme (4th gen) in the garden shed. All Apple articles I read on the topic convinced me that roaming (ethernet connected base station) is much better than wireless extending because you don't lose throughput. As I had no ethernet in the shed, I used two powerline adapters to bring ethernet there and I connected my airport extreme.
Then I had to re-install all the airport expresses (as I had also changed the name of the network) and I noticed that the default option of the Airport utility is to make them extend the network wirelessly instead of just joining to it. I did not do it, but I am wondering. Is it a good idea? As they are in different rooms than the Time Capsule, of course the network there is not as strong as close to the Time Capsule. I still get "good enough" connection, but I will I have an improvement if I allow every Airport Express to extend the network as well? Or will I have problems with the throughput. My idea is not to do it and keep the net as simple as possible, i.e just extend it with roaming in the garden where I really need it and let the airport expresses in client mode.

As usual AirPort Utility is trying to be clever. It is proposing what Apple thinks most people will want to do with it, and most of the time it succeeds.
Having the Expresses "wirelessly extend" the Time Capsule's wireless network will increase your wireless network service area and should not introduce new problems. If that is not what you want to do though, you can certainly return to AirPort Utility and select "join a wireless network". It is a simpler configuration, and simpler is better for home wireless networks.
Wireless > Network Mode > Join a wireless network.

  • Ethernet connected (in green) and is ON, Internet doesn't work

    Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem. I cannot surf the Web even though Ethernet is connected. When I try to go with Safari to some webpage it says it can't open it because it can't connect to server. When I try to troubleshoot the connection with Diagnostics, all 5 lights on the left hand side pane are green, Internet included. After running diagnostics computer says that everything's ok and everything should run fine. However I can't open any webpage. I have reset Safari, I have reset the modem, I have tried renewing DHCP lease, I have tried doing everything possible, I am out of ideas. Anyone?
    Thank you.
    Sergio

That's the thing, WiFi works fine everytime everywhere. I could connect via Ethernet cable at home without a problem, but not now (I am in dorms). I was thinking that maybe it's the modem (not mine, it's provided with the room). Do you think I should try anything else before buying a new one? Rolling back to Safari 3 or Leopard 10.5 maybe? However everything DID work at home via the cable with current application versions. And the router at home isn't exactly new or high end.

  • Hi, I have a MacPro and can't get it to connect to my emails or Chrome / Safari to work. The Internet works fine on my iPads; I have used the network diagnosis tool to check that the Ethernet connection is fine, and it is.  Help, please?

I don't have another computer that I can connect to the Ethernet; and its not really practical to move the Mac Pro nearer to the Airport Express to get wifi signal. I've tried turning everything completely off (including taking the plug out of the socket), but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas, please?

Desperate times call for desperate measures:
    System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > (Assist Me) > Assistant ...
... and set it up again, being sure to specify a new "Location". Do not keep the "Automatic" one, create a new one or accept the default (current date&time).
A "Location" is a basket of settings from all over the place that could influence how your network connection behaves. Thye were invented to collect together such stuff so that you could switch fro "Home" to "Work" to "StarBux" just by specifying the Location, and all the settings needed would be pulled together and applied at once.
Sometimes a stray setting gets included by accident, and a new setup eliminates that stray setting and it perks up and works afterward.

  • Key interceptor for dialer/connect key (green) and disconnect key (red)

    Hi,
Can someone tell me, how can i capture green key (dialer/connect) and red key (disconnect). In the emulator, i am able to capture all the keys as mentioned in the samples/examples. But in windows mobile (imate), it is not capturing these keys.
I want to know how i can capture these system keys in MIDP 2.0.
    Thanks, and regards.

are you able to display key codes in your app (like 1 for key one, etc...)?

  • IChat is Connecting... and Disconnecting...

Today when I opened iChat, it said "Connecting..." for 45 minutes. If I try to log out, it says "Disconnecting..." I can't get it off of either of these! It won't even be offline if my Airport is off! Any tips for getting it to work again? I just moved to a new location yesterday, but I used the new network with iChat just fine then, so it's new today.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
In iChat can you access the iChat menu >Preferences > Accounts ?
If so go to the Server Server Settings and change the port to 443
(In Snow Leopard turn SSL On first and Press Enter to "Set" the port)
In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button doe the DNS tab list the current DNS Servers form your new ISP ?

  • Ethernet connection drops in and out

Please help me out, I am running an iMac 27 in, mid 2011. It was updated to Mavericks and from what I understand there were not connectivity issues at that time. Now I am having issues with randomly losing connection to my supervisor's computer, the external drives on the network and the internet all at the same time. I can usually immediately reconnect to my supervisor's computer, but my adobe programs, usually indesign, still crash because the "file was lost" or something to that effect. It is also causing some pretty big issues with updating DPS files. I spent an extremely unproductive afternoon with adobe support and some subsequent troubleshooting on my own pointed to the iMac or connectionbeing the issue. We have checked the ethernet jack, and it is not the issue. I would also like to mention that I am connected through an ethernet cable, that has also been recently replace. Has anyone run into this and been able to fix it? At this point even a temporary fix that I have to perform each morning before I start would be an improvement, and a productive step in the right direction.

Factory defaults, let it install with cisco connect. I did configure it myself before, but to rule out any and all user error I tried it with the tools Cisco shipped the router with. Even before installing the router with cisco dconnect, so with PURE factory defaults, it only delivered 65mb/s over 2.4ghz N
Again, there can't be any missconfiguration if nothing is configured. I took the liberty to google some more about this router, and it seems there are a lot of people reporting bad range/speed.
I'm just going to RMA this and see if a new one will do better.

Here are the logs : ap_logs.png
    2) I have motorola 9190 connected to a specific SSID, our customer use these motorola to scan the merchandising. They disconnect some times and they have to reconnect manually again, or reboot the scanner...
Here you can find the logs also: scan_logs.png
Here you can see the client was connected at 8h03, and disconnected at 8h05...
If someone can help me, because i really don't understand what is going on...
    Thanks in advance,

  • Airport Express Continuously Drop Ethernet Connection

    Hi:
I have an Airport Express (802.11n) with the latest update software available (7.4.2) and I running my iMac with Snow Leopard (also with the latest software actualization). Since a few weeks ago the device has been dropping the ethernet connection every now and then without any error or malfunction of the software.
I already try almost everything including reset the device and configure a new WiFi net. In some reviews and forums that I have been investigating says that maybe is a firmware (?) problem.
If anybody has the same problem and found the way to solve it I really appreciate the answer to this issue.
    Thanks.

I had this happen with a new box. One glorious moment it worked first time and then it started doing what you described but hard on! See this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2164508 . Finally solved by getting a replacement from the store!

  • Ethernet connection must be reconnected every time at startup

I'm connecting over ethernet using PPPoE, and my problem is whenever I restart the computer, I have to go into Network Preferences and click "Connect" for the ethernet connection (the password and all other info is saved - I just hit connect and it instantly does so). I think it's because it's trying to connect via my wireless network, although I have Wi-Fi turned off, and it remains off when I restart. Any suggestions for ensuring that the computer automatically connects through the ethernet connection?

Thanks for the reply - I tried typing that in, first all in one line and then hitting enter, then doing the first line (sudo ifconfig en0 down) and hitting enter so I could type the second part on its own line. Both times it gave me this warning:
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
It then asked me to type my password or hit ctrl + c to cancel, but it wouldn't let me type the password.
I tried again by typing it all into one line and restarting without hitting enter. I held down the four keys but just got one bong. When I logged back in it was not connected.
I'm guessing I did something wrong entering that into the text utility?
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Is there an easy way to switch between ehternet and wifi connection without having to disconnect the ethernet cable?

    Hi All
Was wondering if there is an easy way to switch between ethernet and wifi connection on Apple TV without having to disconnect the ethernet cable. The reason I ask is that I find it quicker to use my ethernet connection via a Netgear Powerline Home Theatre Set-up to stream Trailers and Movies on the Apple TV, however this is no good when connecting directly to my Mac to stream music or TV shows in iTunes, so revert to the wifi connection that I created on my Time Capsule to do this.
Would be handy if Apple TV had a menu option where you could manually change the connection type depending on what you were doing, as per above scenario.
    Cheers

I have two airport extremes, one acting as a modem and the other operating in bridge mode.  The extremes are connected using ethernet, but remain connected even when I disconnect the Cat5a cable (I did this to check that the 100 feet of Cat 5a cable connecting them was working). How do I find out if they are operating wired or wirelessly?  I want to know as I assume I will get much better speeds if they are wired.

Hi Bob, many thanks for the prompt response.  I think I did what you suggested, but you're the expert so I have sent over a few screenshots.  The extreme in question is High Birches Home Office (the rest of the network has been in place and working well for some time).  My new home office is going to be in the garden, circa 100 feet from the main house.  I have installed armoured Cat5e cable down to the shed that is going to be adjacent to the home office once built and situated the High Birches Home Office Airport Extreme there temporarily.  Everything works well, so I was surprised when I unplugged the ethernet, that it still worked.  I also tested the ethernet cable by switching off my laptop's wifi and unplugging the cable from the airport extreme and directly into the laptop and that worked ok.
If the screenshots below (I did every Airport utility tab for the High Birches Home Office) don't tell you anything more, then the set-by-step instructions would greatly appreciated so I can ensure I completed the steps correctly.

  • Ethernet-connected Devices and DHCP

    Hi!
I have an ethernet-connected device (http://www.avid.com/US/products/artist-mix) which I'm having some issues with. I currently have it plugged into the primary ethernet port on my Mac Pro, with the LAN connected to the secondary ethernet port.
Some suggestions have been to assign it a static IP to the device to avoid conflicts. Which leads me to my question:
If the device is connected via ethernet to my Mac, is it assigned an IP address via DHCP like a device connected directly to the LAN does? Or would it remain separate from the network? If connecting it to my Mac does indeed attach it to the network via DHCP, then I will get on assigning a static IP for it.
I realise this isn't really a Mac Pro based question, but I know there are people in this forum who can help me.
Many thanks for any help in advance,
    Steve

So I have the modem/router in DHCP/NAT mode, and Airport Extreme in Bridged mode.
This would be the simplest, correct way to configure your network.
Unless you need some special feature from the AirPort Extreme....that would require that the AirPort Extreme handle DHCP and NAT service.....like the Guest Network feature......then it would probably be best to keep things simple and leave them "as is" on your network.
Either the modem needs to be in Bridge Mode and the AirPort Extreme handles DHCP and NAT.....or.....the modem/router handles DHCP and NAT and the AirPort Extreme is setup in Bridge Mode.
it does not really matter which device handles DHCP and NAT as long as your feature requirements are being met on the network.
Personally, I strongly prefer to use a simple modem....not a modem/router....and another separate router to control the network. But, your ISP may not offer that option.
