X86 on a Dell PE 2650

Allrighty... Need to install x86 on a Dell 2650, which has a hardware RAID controller.
the 2650 is on the Hardware compatibility list, and I can find the sun drivers for the raid controller ( I think )
Here's the question: How do I manage the RAID configuration from Solaris once it is installed? Don't I need some kind of RAID manager utility to interface with the controller?
I am well-versed in software RAID procedures with Volume Manager ( DiskSuite) and Veritas,
but my client would much prefer a hardware RAID solution. I am completely unfamiliar with hardware RAID controllers.
Thanks in advance

In fact, I think you should configure the disk raid before you install the os, after that , solaris will recognize the disk array volume as a disk device. in otherword, you only need treat the disk array as a single disk device.

  • Monitoring RAID with Solaris 10 x86 and Dell PowerEdge 2650 PERC 3/Di

    Hello,
I have a PowerEdge 2650 with the PERC 3/Di RAID controller.
The OS installed is Solaris 10 8/07 U4.
Currently RAID is configured through the BIOS and it works fine, but I have no way to monitor the status of the drives.
Is there a command to show me the status of the drives? Drivers I need to install?
    TIA,
    Chris

I'm just now starting to delve into the X86 servers, and I am not a fan of hardware RAID in general, but on the SPARC side, you would use 'raidctl' to interact with hardware RAID environments.

  • Solaris 8 on Dell 2650 PERC 3 RAID Installation

The Dell Poweredge 2650 is listed as supported on the Solaris 8/X86 2/02 HCL along with its PERC raid controller. I've downloaded the RAID and ethernet driver diskettes mentioned, but the RAID driver does not appear to attach to the controller. I did try adjusting the PCI IDs in the driver disk, and now I can get to to list the RAID controller in the Devices list, but it bombs out later when it get to the installation part.
My question is where I get an updated driver and/or instructions that actually work with this system - someone must have one to have certified the system in the first place. Dell doesn't seem to know anything about Solaris.

Solaris 10 doesn't help us much because we develop software that we need to compile and test on Solaris 8.
I've have gotten the required Solaris 8 drivers through my Dell Rep. The Dell Custom Servers Group has the drivers. To do the install you will need:
    1) Broadcom ethernet driver diskette (follow link from Solaris 8 HCL)
    2) PERC RAID driver disk (From Dell Custom Server Solutions Group - the link on the Solaris 8 HCL does not work!)
    3) IDE driver update disk (From Dell Custom Server Solutions)
    4) PERC firmware 2.7.1 (2.8.0 does not work)
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/previousversions.aspx?c=us&cs=
    04&l=en&s=bsd&SystemID=PWE_FOS_XEO_2650&os=DOS&osl=en&deviceid=1375&devl
    ib=35&category=35&releasetype=FRMW
Downgrade the RAID firmware to 2.7.1 using the above link.
Boot Solaris 8 2/02 software 1 CD. Press F4 to add drivers and add all three driver diskettes. The installation will prompt you for them again later.
    Finish installing Solaris.
When the system comes up again, you may need to add the PCI ids of the ethernet cards to the /etc/driver_aliases file. I don't have the exact information available at the moment.

  • X86 Install failure on Dell Laptop

I'm quite familiar with Solaris 8 and have done numerous installs
including dual boot on x86, and jumpstarts on Ultras.
I am trying to install x86 on a Dell CPX H500gt laptop. 5 gigs space, 256 mb ram. Plenty of resources. No problems with setting up
the bios, and telling it to boot into the Solaris install menu. (from 1
    of 2 cd)
    My problem is this:
When I get to the language preference question, my keyboard mapping is
shot. I've tried numlock off and on, and used 3 different keyboards.
Laptop keyboard out of docking station, and two different keyboards
    while the Dell is docked.
Funny thing is, the mapping is fine until the point where the install
program wants language preferences entered. I tried various keys and the
whole mapping of the keys on the board is off.
As I mentioned, in the earlier phase of the install program, when it
asks if you want Jumpstart, the mapping is fine. I did not have this
problem on my x86 install on my tower, (same keyboard tested as bad on
the Dell) and used the exact same cd's (1 of 2) that sun sent.
So I tried to configure Jumpstart to get around the mapping. Booted the
Dell bios to boot from the network using BOOTP, which is the core
protocol that Jumpstart uses. No go. Used the procedure from the Sun
Admin 2 class, it is proven to work on an Ultra environment. No go on
    x86 though.
    Any suggestions?

This is a known issue with hotplugging. There are 2 choices you have
    1) Install xf86-input-evdev and hal and dbus (if you haven't already)
    2) Disable hotpluggin completely.

  • Solaris 8 x86 installation

Has anybody tried to install Solaris 8 on a Dell PowerEdge 2650 or similar machine(dual processor at 2.4GHz each). At the beginning of the install I get ACPI errors but it allows me to continue. After installing all the appropriate drivers and selecting to install from CDROM the system indicates that it cannont find the CDROM and reboots. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I recall having that problem on an older poweredge. The solution was to use a different cdrom drive than the factory installed one or move it to the other bus. I cant remember off the top of my head, but I think the factory one was scsi, and was either plugged into an AMI raid card or the MB scsi controller. I think I either had to move it to the other scsi bus, or add an IDE cdrom to get it to work. It's only necessary on install, and you can move it back to where ever once it's installed and it will recognize without problems. It was only on install that it was an issue. I am 80% that it was scsi, and originally plugged into the mb's integrated scsi and it needed to be moved to the raid, but it's been a while since I did it, and I dont remember for sure. Good luck.

  • Solaris 10 x86 Install skips Network Configuration

I am trying to install solaris 10 x86 on a Dell Dimension and not able to get the network card to work. The network card is Ok as I tested it by installing Windows XP on the same box.
    Ifconfig -a shows only le0.
What is the best way to enable the network card?
    Any help is appreciated.

I think u should do one thing.
    1) Find out your name of your NIC card. ( Probably if u installed XP and seen which NIC is that)
    2) Download drivers for your NIC by giving something like " download network drivers for solaris for ' your NIC' ".
    3) If fortunately if u get drivers, copy it on ur solaris machine and install it by reading readme file of the drivers.
    4) In readme file u will also find NIC name.
    5) Then run command " ifconfig (card name e.g. bcme0) plumb
    6) Now run "ifconfig -a" if u find ur card name there except le0 then congrats u have done it.
    7) Move ahead with network config.
Note : - I am not sure but i think if ur machine is old then u will not get drivers for it.
Tell me if u get success........

  • Solaris 10 x86 b63 USB keyboard issue

Hello. I am trying to install Solaris 10 x86 on a Dell Optiplex SX280. The system uses a USB keyboard and mouse. When asked as to the type of installation to perform (1 - Interactive, 2 - JumpStart, 3 - Text Only), I select 1, then the system start booting and the following messages are displayed:
    Configuring devices.
Using RPC Bootparams for network configuration information
    ioctl (kbd type): Invalid argument
and hangs at this point. The keyboard stops responding so that a power cycle is the only option. Obviously the keyboard is recognized for me to select option 1 above but something happens after that. Any ideas? Thanks.

At the "1 - Interactive, 2 - JumpStart, 3 - Text Only" prompt the BIOS handles the keyboard. This is before the
    Solaris kernel is loaded.
After the Solaris kernel is booted, either the Solaris PS/2 keyboard driver or the USB keyboard driver has
to handle the system's keyboard. For your system it's apparently the USB keyboard driver.
I'm not sure what's wrong with this system. You could try to boot into single user mode with verbose
kernel messages enabled. At the "1 - Interactive, 2 - JumpStart, 3 - Text Only" prompt, type
b -vsAre there any (error) messages from Solaris' usb kernel modules? Look for messages from the modules
"ohci", "uhci" or "ehci". ehci is for USB 2.0, while ohci & uhci are for USB 1.1 devices. I guess your
USB keyboard is an USB 1.x device, so you need either a working "ohci" or "uhci" driver for the USB
port where your keyboard is attached.

  • PowerEdge R730 and Windows 2008 x86

    Hello,
I need to install Windows 2008 x86 on a Dell R730 I just receive. The install stuck on the windows installation language screen, the keyboard doesn't respond, no verr. num, no caps lock ...
    I try:
     - several keyboard
     - using Lifecycle Controller or booting onDVD
     - internal usb
     - the server is up to date
     - disabled/actived usb3 support
on the official web page, it's said that windows 2008 sp2 x86 is support but i can't find any x86 drivers in the support web site

If it is getting stuck on the installation screens, I would suspect your installation media is bad. Try downloading again, checking the hash, using a download manager, using different software or drive to burn ISO, etc.
2008 is noticeably absent from the list of operating systems on support.dell.com, but you should be able to get them from ftp.dell.com.

    Hello,
Based on your description, it seems that this issue only occurs on  Windows Vista SP2, and I get that connect you shared and have helped to vote it.
I think that Microsoft engineers will evaluate them seriously and provide you better support. In addition, you can post the answer here once the issue is resolved.

  • Solaris Developer Edition Install / Other (many problems, need help!).

I've tried installing Solaris on two different desktops (1GB ram, 3-year old processors), one Dell PowerEdge 2650 server (1GB Ram, 2800 MHZ processor), and a brand new, three month old Dell laptop (Pentium Dual-Core, 2 GB RAM).
The server install appears to have worked fine at first. However.... it will often just freeze up after having been running awhile. I've never seen it do this while I am actively working with it, but if I leave it on overnight, it will always be unresponsive the next morning. Besides the inability to get a monitor output, even a SSH terminal remoted into it will stop taking commands (no error message). This has quite stumped me. It should not be an issue with memory to my knowledge - on a custom install for it, I gave it 14 GB for swap space.
The two older desktops I tried it on had negative results. The first I don't have to worry about it dying overnight - it does that quite well throughout the day. Basically.... GNOME keeps throwing exceptions throughout the day using the desktop, and I am theorizing the system is not powerful enough to run the operating system.
The second..... doesn't even get it installed. It can run the latest Ubuntu without problem (what it was running previously), but the install fails on the machine. The first sign of something being wrong is that it hits 69% installation complete in two hours.... then slows to a snail's pace. Two days later, it finishes the install and states that it failed and cannot run in default configuration. Looking over the log from the details button didn't really show me what happened, and it would not load upon reboot.
The laptop fairs even worse. I select to install "Solaris Express", it does the dot loading screen, prints out "Solaris OS 5.11 Version snv_70b <clipped> Use is subject to license terms.", and then..... stops. It won't go any further in the installation process.
While this is a great deal to read, I am hoping for help with a best plan of action (ie. I'd be happy if one of the four would work). Basically..... any suggestions on how to solve any of the problems listed above, or any theories as to what the problem might be. Thanks in advance!
