Xev/xmodmap only working part of the time [resolved]

Ok guys, maybe its just my mind playing tricks on me at 1am, but...
I bought a new laptop. Been trying to get it setup (I even made a wiki page for it in hardware->laptops), and tonight I tackled accelerated 3D, suspend to ram, and function keys (multimedia keys). Which brings me to this post...
The nice, easy way of setting it up through XFCE4 or keytouch wasn't recognizing all of my keys, so I turned to xmodmap.
First off, the kernel isn't recognizing all of them. No biggie, I figure we'll play around with evdev and scripting later.
So ... the ones that do work... well they're producing keycodes in xev! Great!
Made my xmodmap file
Ran /usr/bin/xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap
Voila! xev is now showing me keysyms! On to setting them up through XFCE, right?
Wrong.
I decided to clean up a bit, and restarted X just for the heck of it.
Now, my xev is not producing keysyms. Not even showing me keyCODES anymore.
Where before it was printing your normal output, similar to
KeyRelease event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x2a00001,
root 0x87, subw 0x0, time 2557948, (314,172), root:(945,537),
state 0x50, keycode 174 (keysym 0x0, same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:

(before xmodmap it was null, after it showed the keysym as well) (i just hit a letter and copied/modified this, its not EXACTLY right, since now everything is screwed up)
now it is showing me

This happened the other day, and I just rebooted a few times and it went away. Came right back tonight though.
I'm not really sure what to do with this one.

It may be that these keys are generating scan codes that X does not translate into key codes. If X doesn't get the key codes, it cannot do any type of key mapping with xmodmap. I had a similar problem with my Dell Inspiron 9300. Certain keys did not get translated by X. To solve this problem I did the following:
1. Figure out the scan codes for the keys that do not generate X key codes. There is a console program around that lets you do this, but I can't remember it for the life of me. Surely if you google you will find it. I think I recall finding it in an article about setting up these extra keys on Dell laptops, but I'm not sure.
2. Use setkeycodes to map these scan codes to key codes that X can use. In my case, I added the following to my rc.local file to always map the scan codes on boot:
# Map the Fn+F1 (Hibernate) key
setkeycodes e00a 123
# Map the Fn+F3 (battery) key
setkeycodes e007 120
3. Use xmodmap to map these key codes to a key symbol you can use.
4. Use xbindkeys (or whatever the XFCE equivalent is) to map these keys to your desired action.

Why does my Safari Auto-Fill only work part of the time?

First of all, why isn't there a link on the Apple website to provide Feedback? Secondly, I'd love to know why my Safari Auto-Fill only works some of the time, like when entering Sweepstakes information. I realize some websites don't allow Auto-Fill, but on the ones that do, I can't get the second window to open up when I click "Auto-Fill".

Safari 6.1.1 and yes all web forms are checked under Preferences Auto-Fill. I am daily entering sweepstakes for the HGTV dream home, and even though the initial bubble shows up "Auto-Fill your contact information" shows up, when I click on it, the second bubble that lets you confirm the info doesn't always open. I tried it just now in a separate tab, and it opened; then I came back here to write some of the message. Then I went back to try again and it won't open. It drives me crazy. I keep trying with each new data field and sometimes the second bubble will open further down the page.

My Display Only Works Part of the Time and Apple Care Won't Help Me (Long)

I bought my computer at a discounted price because it was a restocked item, but was it really worth it? I'm beginning to think not. I saw that it had one stuck pixel, but saving that much money on such an expensive computer, the pixel hardly seemed like a travesty. However, I think I've discovered the real reason why the last owner gave up such a seemingly exceptional piece of hardware...
After about a month of flawless operation my "new" computer started to act a little strangely. It wouldn't always go to sleep when it was scheduled, the screen saver wouldn't always come on by itself...things that I though a simple PRAM reset, SMC reset, or disk permission repair would fix. After countless attempts at all three "fixes" I was still having problems...a few days after these problems started occuring something even more drastic happened: My computer would turn on (the little light would come on, I'd hear the fans start running and the start up tone) but the screen would remain black. I tried several PRAM and SMC resets as suggested on this forum, but the screen continued to come up black for about an hour. That's when I called Apple.
The Apple Care specialist on the phone asked me for the serial in which I had to lift the computer up to get (since I obviously couldn't read it off the screen). She suggested an SMC reset which, I explained to her, I had tried already but it hadn't worked, however, I was willing to give it another shot. Oddly (and rather annoyingly) enough it worked, and for a short amount of time I was happy...until it happened again...another call to Apple...and again...and about 3 or 4 calls to Apple Care later, they suggested that I go in to an Apple Store to have it looked at.
The Apple Specialist made an appointment with me to meet with an Apple Genius the next day at 4:30PM at a store about a mile away from my house. The next day I lugged my 24" iMac through the local mall (I'm female, 5'2", and I weigh about 108 so it wasn't too easy of a feat) to discover the apple store was CLOSED for the next few days so that they could "make the store better." I called Apple Care on my cell phone right there in the mall and asked them what was going on. Didn't they know that this Apple Store was closed? The man I was talking to said that they knew and he wasn't sure how the person I had talked to just the day before had signed me up for an appointment when he hadn't even asked for my e-mail address. It was most bizarre. This man made an appointment with me for later that same day at an Apple Store about 45 minutes away from where I live. I didn't want to go, but I'm a college student and I was a desperate for my computer to work again.
Shaking around in that box must have brought it out of it's strange seized-up state because as I brought it out for the Mac Genius to look at it turned on for him no problem. Quite a frustrating problem because it's so spontainious that it keeps making me look like either a liar or a fool. He said he'd run an 8-hour diagnostic check on it and I could pick it up the next day. So the next day I waited for their call but I got none. I called them and they said that they were still running tests and it'd be ready the next day. The day after, about an hour and a half before I had to go to work, they called me and told me my computer was ready. They said they had ran a 24-hour diagnostic and everything was working fine but they said they'd run more tests if I wanted them to. I'm a full-time college student and I need my computer for just about all of my classes, so I declined more tests and told them I'd pick it up right away. I dashed over there to pick it up and dashed back as fast as I could (and I even made it to work on time...but just barely). Later that night I found that they had accidentally left their diagnostics CD in my computer (I called them about it and they said that would like it if I would bring it back...I still haven't mailed it).
All was fine and good (well, just okay...it still had problems with its sleeping and screen-savering) with my computer until yesterday. I got that black screen again upon start up....but this time my "fixes" worked after a few tries. There were no more problems for the rest of yesterday.
However, today I came home from school and go to start up my computer and the screen turned on and I saw the little mac symbol and that little circle of bars...but then it froze. I held in the little button to force a shutdown and when I started it back up again I was greeted by my good old friend, Mr. Black Screen. Just wonderful. I tried my "fixes" but today I didn't get lucky. So while I was holding in the button to start up my computer (again) and give it another go, I held it longer than I was supposed to and the little on light began flickering. Then I heard this unpleasant tone that lasted a few seconds before stopping and treating me to the startup sound. This time the screen turned on. Yay! I go to call Apple to find out what I had just done, and I find out that my 90 days are up and unless I wanted to pay $50 for them to be puzzled by my issue once more or give them $300 for not quite 3 more years of service, I'd have to lug my computer to an Apple Store or post here to get help. Thanks a lot Apple Care.
My "new" computer cost me almost $3,000. It should work the way it's supposed to. I need it to last me no less than 6 more years, but with the problems I've had with it in the first 3 months (which seem only to be getting worse and more frequent), I don't know if I'm expecting WAY too much out of it. I've been a loyal Apple user for 13 years and out of the 5 computers I've had in that time I've never had so many problems (actually I've never had any problems, at least nothing really serious; I'd never even called Apple Care before this). I'm a fairly experienced user (I'm not a Mac Genius or anything, but I know the ropes) and I am sure this is not normal behavior for an Apple computer (or any computer of that matter).
I'm so frusterated I'm not sure what to do. What's wrong with my computer? How can I get Apple to help me? How can I get Apple to even believe me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you so much for reading my very long (and rather dramatic) story.

Check-in/out files only works some of the time

My office recently upgraded to CS6 from CS5.5. I am able to connect to the web server successfully and can sometimes check in and check out a file without problems but most of the time I keep getting an error message that the file activity is incomplete. It says I am connected to the server but "An FTP error occurred--cannot put (name of file). Access denied. The file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem. Make sure you proper authorization on the server and the server is properly configured." I have also gotten the message "553 permission denied."
I have noticed that when I take out what I have in the root directory and leave it blank it works. However, I have to have something in the root directory first, try to check in or out a file, and then take it out in order for it to work; I cannot leave the root directory field blank at all times or else I get an error message. Is there a work around so that I do not have to keep editing the site root directory every time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. There are three of us that use Dreamweaver and they are unable to check-in/out with CS6. They are using our older version of Dreamweaver with no problems. The settings were given to me by my IT department. Dreamweaver is not supported by IT and they cannot offer me any additional help. I saw in another discussion to take out the first / in the root directory but it is needed in order me to successfully connect to the server. WinSCP is used for FTP. Please let me know if you need additional information. I really appreciate the help.

8ik, keys only work 10% of the time on my chromebook

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your Chromebook and issues with keys sticking. You can power the Chromebook down by pressing the power button for 20 seconds. Then pressing it again to restart it.
Here is a link to help adjust the keyboard input on your Chromebook.
You could reinstall Chrome OS which takes it back to factory settings. Make sure you back up all data or it will be lost.

Why does FF 9 work part of the time and others I can't even get it to load a webpage. When I open it, it says about blank and Tab on the tab bar. Will not let me go to any websites. HELP Please!!

After FF 9 installed every little while I lose whatever page I am on and it goes to about blank. When I tried to reload my pages it just sits there. Yesterday I was about to uninstall it and it started working fine again. This morning it decided to stop again, I have uninstalled it, rebooted and reinstalled and it's still doing this.
I never had this problem with any of the other versions. It all started with FF 9. It downloaded itself after I told it ignore update. I am getting very flustered with this happening.
It acts like it has a mind of its own when it comes to when it is going to work for me or not. I need to fix this somehow. I even tried reinstalling 7 again and it did the same thing as 9 does now. I took it back off and put 9 back on since neither want to work properly.

Panasonic DMC-TS1 ... only works 1/2 the time

For the most part... when I plug in my TS1 to my iMac via USB with the SDcard still inside... and there is HD Movies on it, iMovie shows it and pulls up the import box. However sometimes nothing happens... the little drop down thing drops down when i open iMovie and says Looking for and shows it... but there isnt a import box after... only the iSight thing shows...
Anyone have any help?????

(1) I do not use TS1, but you may merely need to restart your Mac and try again. If restarting does not correct the problem, one of the following may help you import more reliably.
(2) Use your Mac's  > Software Update... to make sure your iMovie is the latest version for your system. (I am using 8.0.5.)
(3) Re-read your TS1's User Guide manual directions to be sure you are following the directions on how to import your movies into you Mac.
If you are already pressing the "OK" button to confirm you are using the "PC" connection when downloading, try configuring the camera's "USB Mode" setting in the camera's "Tools/USB" menu so the default is "PC". See MistX's post in this thread for details:

(4) If you are certain you are using the right camera techniques but STILL cannot import your video clips from your TS1 into iMovie, try downloading them to iPhoto as you would still images. This suggestion comes from this Apple iMovie Help article:

Custom 404 error page only works 75% of the time

I have made custom HTTP error pages for my app and they work for Mozilla, Opera and Firefox but IE seems to have its own personal 404 error page.
Anyone know how to make IE work and play well with others and display the custom 404 page like the other 3 browsers do? I did clear the IE cache, twice.
The environment is Tomcat 5.0.19 (stand-alone, no IIS) running on Window Server 2003 Enterprise

You got to love microsoft products huh. Microsoft has turned on its friendly error pages. Unfortunately, to fix this, you have to have your clients modified their browser settings. Inside the IE browser, do the following:
1. From menu choose tools->internet options
2. Choose the advanced tab
3. Uncheck the checkbox that says "Show friendly HTTP error messages"
That will do it for ya.

I have an iPhone 4, and my charger only works half of the time and is bulged by the actual plug I'm spot. Will AppleCare cover this? If not what should I do?

Can someone please tell me what I need to do to use my AppleCare to replace my charger? And if I don't have my AppleCare info but have the email from when I activated it, is that all I need?

EventListener working 95% of the time in IE but only 2% in Firefox?

I have no clue how to even begin to debug this. The problem
is much more common in Firefox than in IE, but it does happen in
both.
The critical problem is that my EventListener function
startChatClickHandler is not triggered 98% of the time in Firefox
and about 5% of the time in IE. Even the Alert box doesn't trigger.
I can click on it all day in Firefox and it just sits there though
once ever while it works but never more than once. But if I right
click on it, then select Rewind, it will work 100% - at least till
I try it again. That must be a clue but I have no idea what it
means. Also, it used to work just fine but one of my changes must
have had a unintented effect but I can't seem to fix it. Also, I've
had the same results on more than one PC.
Another possible clue is that if I hit the enter key instead,
that works 100% of the time in both Firefox and IE, even though all
it does is pass it on to the EventListener function
startChatClickHandler. It's like it's just not "hearing" the mouse
clicks most of the time.
The instance of the button is called startChatButton and
userNameInput is a instance of a TextInput. The code for this
section is below.
I've struggled with this for 12 hours straight and I am at my
wits end. Anyone who can help with this will have my undying
gratitude.

My iPod shuffle, which I prchased in 2009 only worked for a short time so I put it back in the box and just recently took it out. I will not charge and the power light does not come on. It was faulty from the start and thought I was out the money I paid.

If you have the chance stop by an Apple Retail store and talk to them about it...they often work deals for replacement of out of warranty non-working items for prices around half price. Won't hurt to stop by and see what they will do for you.

I'm doing a job for a client in InDesign CS5. I have not worked in CS5 before, so don't know if this is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong.
It seems to happen randomly and I have checked the preferences and tried using different settings for the Display Performance. I've even tried viewing the job with Overprint Preview switched on.
When placing images only a part of the image shows. When I output to PDF or Print the file then the entire image shows. This makes it very hard to do layouts, especially in cases where I need to crop an image.
In InDesign it looks like this:

The machine I'm ding this job on is an iMac, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM. It is running Mac OSX 10.6.4. And InDesign is on version 7.0.2.

The machine I'm ding this job on is an iMac, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM. It is running Mac OSX 10.6.4. And InDesign is on version 7.0.2.
If I understand things correctly, you're placing client-supplied images into a new InDesign file that you're creating, so the only part of the workflow that you haven't created is the graphics. This logically leaves the container file innocent.
The question becomes "what's up with either the hardware or the graphics?" If the problem persists with the same graphic files and a new container file on a different user account on the same computer, it's possible that hardware is the villain. If it doesn't persist on a different computer, it's likely the hardware. If it does persist on a different computer, in a new container file, it's likely something in the graphics files.
It's not clear if the graphics card in your iMac is one of the models whose video RAM is "dedicated," that is, it doesn't share video RAM with the main RAM, or if it does share VRAM. If it shares RAM, it's possible that 4GB isn't sufficient to display all the open applications and their demands. If this is the cause, it's a hardware issue (insufficient RAM.)
Because the graphics print and convert to PDF without the problem, it would seem that the graphics are innocent, but perhaps something in the processing of these outputs causes the problem to disappear. For example, perhaps there's some flattening involved. Perhaps there's a clipping path or channel mask of some kind involved that affects the InDesign display? (Just fishing.)
Have you tried opening the graphics in their creating application and saving them to new names? Any difference in the behavior when those graphics are freshly-placed in InDesign, or when their links are updated?
Have you tried placing PDFs of the graphics? If they appear properly, can you crop them to achieve your requirements and hope the problem goes away after the deadline passes<G>?

Only one user at the time can execute VE01 (due to blockage of VEIAV)

Hi,
As I understand it only one user at the time can execute VE01 (or MEIS for arrivals). If someone is already executing the VE01 transaction the error-message "Table VEIAV is blocked by user XX" appears. It does not matter if one tries to execute it for different legal entities - no parallel processing seems to be possible.
This is a huge limitation for a global concern with many entities operating in the same SAP instance. Does anyone recognize this problem and are there any ways to get around it? It does not make sense that dispatches (VE01) and arrivals (MEIS) cannot be executed for several organizational units at the same time in parallel?

yes I know this problem.
One should not maintain much thru this transaction.
for me it is not more than an emergency transaction, as it is not really more than table maintenance thru SM30
You should investigate what entries/changes the users have to make.
Limit these manual entries by having better data in the system, so that SAP can itself create the entries for this table.
Organize more, less users , maybe just one per company who shall maintain VEFU manually.
Train them to prepare their entries before they start using VEFU.
Explain that they should leave VEFU as soon as possible as the block other users.
assign maintenance windows to the users.
