XFCE + Compiz compositing issues

Hi,
I'm using XFCE without display manager and I start it by using the command "startxfce4". Instead of using Xfwm, I'm running Compiz for window decorations, window centering and compositing. In the configuration of CCSM I've replaced Xfwm by the string "emerald --replace" as window decorator (which works fine).
What I'm wondering is: does this completely "disable" Xfwm or is it just replaced during the booting of XFCE? For I've got some applications using transparency (Guake) and compositing (Docky) which experience minor issues with regards to transparency and compositing some of the time, not always. Could this be caused by a "late" replacement of Xfwm by Compiz/Emerald?
If so, how can I fix this? Could anyone explain this to me?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I recently installed xfce and set up compiz. I was able to get the wall, expo, and ring switcher to work with xfwm and xfce panels.
To get compiz to load on startup, I had to add
compiz --replace ccp to the startup programs.
So far, xfce and compiz have been working out well.

  • [Fixed] Xfce + Compiz : tearing at the top of the screen

    Hello,
    Since a few weeks, both my desktop (GTX 680) and laptop (GT 555M) suffer from tearing.
    in 1/4 of the screen ( from the top) : tearing, while moving windows and video playback.
    On the 3/4 of the screen I have no tearing at all.
    Been searchling for 3 days with my friend Google, tried all the "fix" available but none worked.
    Followed the Arch wiki, no way.
    Tried with 4 different NVidia drivers, with no luck...
    Tried with no files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and no xorg.conf, still tearing.
    I can easily swear that it worked fine let's say one month ago, so please stop accusing my good-old-compiz-that-works-like-a-charm.
    Tried with another compositor : still tearing.
    I just don't know what to do
    Please help me...
    Thank you !

    I also have similiar graphics cards and suffer from the same issue.
    Unfortunately it is probably an issue with compiz. I built it from the AUR a few weeks ago and had the exact same issue. This also carried over when I was testing an Ubuntu 12.04 box with the comipz that it comes with.
    Xfce has no way to handle tearing compared to KDE or GNOME. So, unless you're using a different compositor you're going to have issues.
    Compton might work for you, but for me it would shut off whenever I started a video game.
    You can also use Kwin with XFCE as a replacement for compiz. The 4.11 version has support for Wayland, but it causes issues for me.
    You can also try adding this (http://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title … ary_driver). Unfortunately you will probably have to turn off Compiz with this fix, as you are layering vsync over multiple times, which might cause frame drops.
    If none of these help the last resort you have is to switch desktops. For me, Cinnamon and Gnome have no issues. KDE gave me issues, but it might work for you. Until Wayland is fully implemented this is something that we will have to deal with for awhile.

  • XFCE+compiz = no qt icons in tray

    Hi,
    I've started to experiment with compiz and XFCE (windo management and a bit of eye-candy over xfce wm) but there is an issue - all of the qt applications (psi, skype) that I use stopped showing up in tray area... given that those are IM and they usually only in tray makes the situation very problematic as the access to them became very difficult.
    Is it a problem with the configuration? Is there a solution to the problem?

    Well then, carry on!   If they continue to work don't forget to mark your thread solved!   (To do that, edit your first post and pre-pend [Solved] to its title).

  • Xfce & Compiz

    Hi,
    I am using Xfce 4.8 and I'm trying to use Compiz but I can't get it to work right I seem to get an error "can't find ccp module" but I think that could be the main issue on why it's not working. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

    Which compiz packages are installed on your system? In my case it looks like this:
    [photon-new@photon-desktop ~]$ yaourt compiz | grep installed
    1 community/ccsm 0.8.4-2 (compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-gtk compiz-fusion-kde) [installed]
    2 community/compiz-bcop 0.8.4-1 [installed]
    3 community/compizconfig-backend-gconf 0.8.4-1 (compiz-fusion-gtk compiz-fusion) [installed]
    5 community/compizconfig-python 0.8.4-2 [installed]
    6 community/compiz-core 0.8.6-2 (compiz compiz-kde compiz-gtk compiz-fusion) [installed]
    9 community/compiz-fusion-plugins-extra 0.8.6-2 (compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-gtk compiz-fusion-kde) [installed]
    10 community/compiz-fusion-plugins-main 0.8.6-1 (compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-kde compiz-fusion-gtk) [installed]
    12 community/emerald 0.8.4-2 (compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-kde compiz-fusion-gtk) [installed]
    13 community/emerald-themes 0.6.0-3 (compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-kde compiz-fusion-gtk) [installed]
    14 community/fusion-icon 20101021-1 (compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-kde compiz-fusion-gtk) [installed]
    15 community/libcompizconfig 0.8.4-2 [installed]
    I must admit though, that switching from XFWM to Compiz sometimes doesn't work for some reason... But I've configured XFCE to start Compiz as default WM (see wiki) and if I don't switch the WM during the session everything works.
    edit: Seems like you can start Compiz either via fusion-icon or on startup as default window manager, but starting it from the terminal gives this error. It might be related to the package version mix (0.84, 0.86) in the repo.
    edit2: I managed to make it start by passing the "--ignore-desktop-hints" option:
    compiz --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
    But now starting it via /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml doesn't work (seems like before it worked just because of lucky session saving)...

  • Firefox auto fullscreen (XFCE/Compiz)

    Every time I open Firefox (Grease Monkey), it starts maximized and full screen. I have this issue for almost a month and I had it before, in the old install, but never got a solution for it. The only thing for now is to press F11 twice to get it back to normal.
    I use XFCE and Compiz is my window manager.
    Here's a screenshot:
    Is there anyone having the same issue?

    In Compiz general options, my Unredirect Fullscreen Windows is unchecked.

  • Stacked Composition Issues

    i'm currently having an issue with my site.  I donwloaded an adobe muse theme from Musegrid called "Mega Menu".  It allows for a great deal of flexibility in terms of navigation, only when I added it to the master page the dropdown (In stacked mode) goes underneath all of the content on the homepage, rendering it pretty useless.  As the result of this, I placed the composition in Lightbox mode, but I don't particularly like how it looks.  Can anyone help me?

    You need to make sure that the menu's container's z-index is higher than the other elements.

  • Gtk-window-decorator themes in XFCE/Compiz broken after recent upgrade

    I allowed my arch linux upgrades to slide for a while - probably nearly a month - and just did a system upgrade and reboot today. After rebooting, I am stuck with GTK's default Adwaita window borders, which use a lot of real estate, and GTK3 apps like nautilus have a solid black border around the windows.
    I have tried changing the theme with theme-switch2, I have rebooted a couple of times, replaced the window manager with xfwm4 and then gone back to gtk-window-decorator, all with no change. Other aspect of the theme - fonts and colors - work fine, but the window decorator theme just won't change.
    The following commands have no effect:
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences theme Numix
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme Numix
    Here is an example of the black box around nautilus.
    Possibly unrelated, but when I start gnome-tweak-tool, which allows me to change the theme, I get the following message:

    MikeDacre, there is a known issue whereby a change in GTK 3.16 means that Compiz isn't getting the frame extents for CSD windows. It's being discussed in the following Compiz branch: https://code.launchpad.net/~3v1n0/compi … rge/250015
    I'm not entirely sure whether this is the relevant issue for you; my CSD windows don't have black borders but they do have a thin light grey border all the way around which negates the rounding of the top corners. You could try building Compiz from the branch I mentioned but just to warn you I've already tried and it didn't do anything for me. The bottom line is, the Compiz team need to fix Compiz for CSD and until they do, expect there to be problems.

  • Facelets template (J2EE6 Netbeans 6.8 glassfish v3) ui:composition issue

    Hello every body,
    First please excuse my bad english maybe...
    I'm ready to start a new project with Java EE 6 using netbeans 6.8 and glassfish v3.
    For the Web Tiers, I want to use facelets and JSf 2, but I encounter an issue when I want to create and use a facelets template
    Here are the steps to reproduce my problem (very simple..). Theses steps must be reproduced using Netbeans 6.8 :
    A. Project creation
    1. File > New Project > Java EE > Enterprise Application
    2. Project Name : (no matter) : SampleEE (do not check Use dedicated folder....)
    3. Server : Glassfish v3 Domain (provided with netbeans) / JavaEE Version : java EE 6.
    4. Check Create EJB Module and Create Web Application Module (and do not change default names)
    5. Do not check Create Application Client Module. Then Click Finish.
    B. Add JSF 2 Framework to the Web project
    1. In the project tab, right-clic the web project and clic Properties
    2. Select Frameworks and clic the "add" button and Add Java Server Faces (do not change the default configuration. Make sure to use Facelets (not jsp) as prefered page language in the configuration tab)
    3. Clic OK to confirm and close the window
    C. Create a facelet template
    1. In the web project node, right clic and select New > Other > JavaServer Faces > Facelets Template
    2. File Name : template (and do not change anything else : use CSS and use the first and easiest template. Do Not specify folder). Click Finish
    We get this template at the root of "Web Pages" (css is automatically generated in "resources/css"
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"

            <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

            <link href="./resources/css/cssLayout.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
            <title>Facelets Template</title>
        </h:head>
        <h:body>
            <div id="top" class="top">
                <ui:insert name="top">Top</ui:insert>
            </div>
            <div id="content" class="center_content">
                <ui:insert name="content">Content</ui:insert>
            </div>
        </h:body>
    </html>D. Create a template client
    1. On the project node, right-clic and select New > Other > JavaServer Faces > Facelets Template Client
    2. File Name : client (do not specify any folder)
    3. Clic "browse" button to select a template, and select the template nammed "template"
    4. Check <ui:composition>" for "generated root tag" value (note the problem occurs even if we check "html")
    We get this file :
    {code}<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?>
    <!DOCTYPE composition PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <ui:composition xmlns:ui="http://java.sun.com/jsf/facelets"
    template="./template.xhtml">
    <ui:define name="top">
    top
    </ui:define>
    <ui:define name="content">
    content
    </ui:define>
    </ui:composition>
    {code}
    E. Execute
    Now just clean and build and Run the project.
    1. Right Clic the project node and select Clean And Build
    2. Right clic the project node and select Run
    3. Wait for the web browser to open and go to the template url : http://localhost:8080/SampleEE-war/template.xhtml (we can see the template displays correctly, with the good CSS style automatically generated)
    4. Now go to the client URL (http://localhost:8080/SampleEE-war/client.xhtml
    There is a problem : tags are not interpreted and client.xhtml just returns a standard xml and no page is displayed. (if you check 'html' instead of <ui:composition> in the steps before, you can see the page, but it's not the correct page, display the page source and you will see all the facelets tags "<ui:composition..."> <ui:define> and so on...
    I don't know what to do to solve this.
    Please help me, i've been searching for so long hours now...
    Note that the project as no faces-config.xml, since it's now optional... I would prefer not to use it.
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    Kyuubi,
    Thanks for posting anyway. I too was overlooking /faces/* Servlet mapping in web.xml that NetBeans creates.
    Maybe this belongs in an separate thread, but when is <html> a good option to select (versus <ui:composition>) for the Generated Root Tag?

  • [SOLVED] Xfce and bus issues

    Long story short, I updated Xfce to 4.8 few days ago, and everything went well. I was running my basic programs and VM during these days.
    But today, all of a sudden, some programs didn't launch anymore. xfce4-mixer quit with a "Bus Error" message, and many other things started failing. After a reboot, it just got weirder: NMApplet appeared in the tray and displayed my network (wireless), but clicking it just "freezes" the icon. Aside from that, xfce wouldn't load my keymap (es), instead it defaults to a "us" keymap.
    The only packages I updated today were a few python and power management packages. Downgrading these (and dbus) didn't help.
    Also, X terminals (xfce's terminal, tilda, etc) behave strangely when scrolling back: A few lines are displayed, but scrolling up further just displays empty space.
    No major configs were edited during this time. Googling a bit gave me results about dbus being twice on rc.conf, but that's not the issue. My current rc.conf has dbus and hal after it (Method 1 in archwiki). Excluding dbus (Method 2) doesn't change things. I also tried excluding hal (Xfce 4.8 doesn't require it anymore, correct?), but it's the same thing.
    Xfce itself seems to run sorta fine though: The shutdown command inside the DE works, and some apps do run (power management, xfce notes, notifications). Others give out several errors: Chromium for example says it "can't create a directory socket" or something (using another system right now, so I can't check), while avant-window-navigator gives out dbus and gconf errors.
    dmesg doesn't display anything out of the ordinary at the end (the blank space in terminals issue doesn't let me read too far back.)
    EDIT: A dbus-daemon process is constantly using 50% of the CPU. And the kernel is 2.6.36 (upgraded it quite some time ago, had no issues)
    Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

    ...and I solved it.
    Since nothing would work, I decided to back up my system files and pacman cache, among other things. When checking my pkgcache folder size, I noticed that the / partition was at 100%...
    So running ncdu I find out slim had a 9.9 GB log for some reason. Deleted that, rebooted, and everything is back to normal.
    So now I mark this as solved, thankfully. Now the slim logs are not growing like crazy.

  • Compositing Issue

    I am having problems with Compositing on Final Cut Pro. I am just learning this so, please bare with me. I recieved stock footage from www.detonationfilms.com .The blood footage is all in front of a white background. So I put the footage in the timeline where I want the blood. I right click to composite>Multiply. Then I resize the blood clip and move it to where I want it. Then I use key frames to animate to stay with the person that the blood is coming from. Then I copy the footage of blood and layer the new copy underneath the original.
    I mean the blood looks fine, but there is a black line that outlines the box of the resized clip of footage. I tried cropping it out, but the line just moves with it. I tried removing one of the layers of footage, its now just not as noticeable. Then I tried to see if the key framing had something to do with it, but it was still there after I removed them. There is also footage available from that website that is front of a black background i.e. gun flares and explosions, and I have no trouble using those. I don't know what it could be, since I am pretty new to this. Is there anyone here who has any ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.

    First, is the issue visible on an external television monitor?
    If your end product is going to be a DVD, encode a tiny sample clip to MPEG-2 using File>Export>Using Compressor, and see if the problem is still visible in the resulting .m2v. If not, you can safely ignore it while working in FCP.

  • XFCE + Compiz wall and ring switcher

    Hi
    I'm looking at running compiz with xfce but what I really want is the wall and the ring switcher from compiz. Is it possible to run just those two with xfwm? I'd like to keep the xfce panels (I run a bottom and top panel) . In the alternative, anybody got experience running the xfce panel and plugins with compiz?
    What is the wisdom or idiocy of doing this?

    Hi,
    I recently installed xfce and set up compiz. I was able to get the wall, expo, and ring switcher to work with xfwm and xfce panels.
    To get compiz to load on startup, I had to add

    Unless it's something else.

    I've encountered this problem alot of times. I've always though it was due to a preformance issue since I use the open Source Drivers. Do you use the propietary or the open source drivers. Also, as far as I know turning effects off is the only way.
    You should try to use the shourcut provided to do this(Ctrl + Alt + F12), makes it alot faster.

  • Xfce & Compiz & Emerald - no window decorations

    Hi, I'm having a problem with my fresh installation of Archlinux i686. I choosed my favourite desktop environment - Xfce4, but I'm not able to get it working with Emerald and Compiz. When I try "emerald --replace" Emerald won't load and I don't see any error message either. On the other hand when I try running "compiz --replace ccp && emerald --replace &" my window decorations disappear and I see this in my console:
    compiz (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slide: freedesktop
    compiz (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling YV12 image format
    fuse: failed to access mountpoint compiz: No such file or directory
    The result is the same with or without Window decorations Compiz plugin turned on or off. Only thing that can save my ass is running "xfwm4 --replace" which restores xfwm4 and kills both Emerald an Compiz.

    Every package in my system is updated to its newest versions (as I said, my system is freshly installed).
    And yes, I UTFGed (a lot), but I haven't found any answer that would work for me (partially maybe because most of topics on this matter are more than one year old).
    Can anyone help me, please? I'm pretty desperate. Thanks in advance.

    What's your card ?
    And what have you installed for it ?
    I have ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series and as you can see in xorg.conf I'm using radeon driver.
    Have you installed these ?
    mesa libgl ati-dri xf86-video-ati
    Did you delete your xorg.conf ?  Have you tried xf86-video-ati-git ?
    This one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79509 ?
    If every else fails: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … positories (catalyst driver instead of radeon)
