Xfce desktop items rearrange themselves between reboots

Hello, I am a new Arch Linux user and this is my first thread. Please pardon any possible mistakes I made on this post.
Almost every time Xfce starts the desktop icons are rearranged. After searching the wiki, I found this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … themselves
So after deleting the said files, I restarted Xfce. The problem was not gone.
Then I noticed that it was more complicated: I think it's not the desktop item positions that are changing, but the desktop's margins.
Not all icons are rearranged; only those on the right and the bottom sides of the desktop, the last collumns and rows.
In /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1350x728.rc these files' positions change back to row=0 col=0 and cannot be placed back to their original location.
The next time I restart Xfce the inaccesible spaces on the desktop are ok once again, and I place the items there. Then the problem repeats itself.
Is there any configuration file I should have manually edited?
I'm using Xfce, xfwm with compositing enabled, and no conky or any other desktop decorations.
inxi -G output:
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF106 [GeForce GTS 450]
Display Server: X.Org 1.15.1 driver: nvidia
Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: GeForce GTS 450/PCIe/SSE2
GLX Version: 4.2.0 NVIDIA 304.121
EDIT: This might be actually caused by removing USB flash drives while the computer is shut down. The mentioned file is not changed, ergo a mess is caused when it's read on startup. I can't confirm this, though.
EDIT #2: No, it happened again, and I had not removed any usb flash drives.

Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.

  • Why are my applications that are assigned to specific desktops randomly rearranging themselves on other desktops?

I'm on a late 2013 Retina 13" MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.4 and for some reason most of my applications assigned to specific desktops are rearranging themselves to other desktops.
For example, I've created eight desktops. I've assigned Safari to appear on desktop three. While using Safari, when I swipe once from to left between desktops using my three fingers, I end up on desktop seven. It appears that Safari automatically reassigns it's self on desktop six. I swipe back to desktop three. From the dock, I find Safari and do a right click to have the application menu pop-up, I hover over options and assign Safari to "This Desktop" again. I begin using Safari, and if I'm unlucky, and I swipe from left to right I end up on desktop four.
This happens constantly and it's become annoying. Is this a bug?
For work, I use a late 2008 Non-Retina 15" MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.4 and that laptop has no issues.

Right click (cntl click) the icon on the dock.  Select options and set "assign to" None, All or This desktop.

  • Desktop items rearranged after download!

Strange thing is happening to my desktop! When I download items to the desktop, other items there get rearranged and messed up. They're not in the order I had them prior to downloading. What is going on?

    Hi Makiko!
Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart, or when adding more items.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
    Icon size: 32 x 32
    Text size: 12 pt
    Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
    Snap to grid
    Show item info
    Show icon preview
    Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.

  • Desktop selections rearranges itself - bug

An extremely frustrating bug in finder is making me lose my mind. The problem is this:
I'll select some number of items on my desktop. When I move these items elsewhere (say, another folder) the majority of the icons on my desktop COMPLETELY rearrange themselves. The icons that have moved themselves are now selected.
Not all the icons move, just most of them, and I can't seem to find a pattern to establish what prevents those specific icons from moving.
This bug is infuriating. I spend a lot of time arrange the icons on my desktop just so, only to have my desktop arrangement put in a blender everytime I move icons. Anyone have any solutions?
Edit: This problem was happening in 10.4.9, and now also in 10.4.10

The problem also occurs when deleting a selection from the desktop. I haven't found any other resources on this issue and it's quite frustrating.
Surely someone has encountered this before?

  • Spaces sometimes rearrange themselves

Sometimes spaces, or desktop, will rearrange themselves. This only seems to happen when I have three or more desktops. When this happens and I go to Mission Control, the spaces at the top will literally be labeled, in order: Desktop 1, Desktop 3, Desktop 2. I've been trying to figure out how this happens and I can't. I can't seem to make it happen, it just... happens.
If anyone has any ideas as to what's happening, how to make it happen, and, especially, how to make it not happen, I'd be glad to hear.
    Cheer,
    Jellyfrank

System Preferences, Mission Control, "Automatically rearrange spaces...."
    Is this checked?

  • Desktop items spontaneously rearranged

I am used to arrange the items in my desktop in "clumps." I would go between an external 1080P display (set as main) at home and the MacBook Pro 15" display while on the go, and before Lion, nothing weird has happened to my desktop.
Recently my desktop started rearrange itself at random times. I have not been able to isolate the problem, but it seems to start occurring after I upgraded to Lion. Has anyone gotten the same problem as well?

Have you gone to your View menu in Finder and chose "Sort by" "None"?

  • Items get stuck between desktops

Does anyone else have a problem with items getting 'stuck' between desktops so that you can see them as you move between desktops, but can't access them?
I created an e-mail by dragging a photo to the Mail icon in the dock, but nothing happened so I repeated the exercise. Still nothing happened. I then created the e-mail by copying and pasting the photo into a new blank e-mail and thought nothing more about it. But now, when I swipe between desktops, I can see the two e-mails, complete with photos but no text, straddling two desktops but can't click on them to delete them. If anyone else has experienced this, have they found a way to access the items?

I've found the answer to my own question in an answer by Captfred last year! I right clicked on the Finder icon in the dock, assigned the Finder to "None" desktops and then found lots more things that were hiding between desktops!
22-Aug-2011 19:36 (in response to drghyde)
I've seen this a few times when Finder was assigned to "all desktops".  If this is the case, right click (cntl click) the dock icon > options > assign to none.

  • How to make desktop items stay in same position?

I notice that on reboot and at other times, the icons on my desktop move around. Mostly it's the disk drives - I'd like them to stay in one place on the desktop, in particular the internal disk and a few external drives to be in a vertical column on the right edge of the screen. I found some solutions for OS9 and Tiger (save/restore desktop state). But oddly none are for Panther. Does anyone know a trick in 10.3 to make things stay where I put them?!?
    Mike

Click on the Desktop then select Show View Options from the Finder's View menu. Check the box labeled "Snap to Grid". If you prefer Desktop items be arranged alphabetically you can also select Name from the Arrange By drop down menu.

  • [Solved] Old xfce desktop

    Hello everybody,
i don't know how to explain exactly my "problem" and what i want, but i'll try: a few months ago i upgraded my system and, at reboot, there was no more my old disordered xfce desktop but there was a new one, with always alligned icons and themes that i don't like so much ... sometimes, when i open the file manager and browse the directories, the old disordered xfce desktop reappears!!! I don't know if anyone has understood my problem, but, if any exists, can help me?
    Thanks!!!

I assume with 'disordered' you mean that the desktop icons can freely be moved around. That is not possible with xfdesktop (Xfce's desktop).
It could be possible that you use nautilus as file browser instead of thunar. That would explain this behaviour. Nautilus has a built-in desktop that also allows icons to be scaled and placed freely on the desktop. When you start nautilus and the desktop option is activated it will most likely replace xfdesktop.
If the assumptions above are correct, your best bet would be to remove xfdesktop (so it doesn't start/restart itself automatically) and add the following command to your autostart:
    nautilus -n
(This will start nautilus and therefore the desktop will appear. The "-n" switch prevents the nautilus window from opening up as well.)

  • Random unresponsive desktop items since 10.5.7

I've noticed since 10.5.7 every now a then the desktop items become completely un-clickable / un-dragable, Finder still works perfectly, the problem is only with the desktop items and folders.
A quick 'killall Finder' command fixes the problem in Terminal.
    Anyone notice this?

I have had the problems for months. Ever since I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5. I don't recall when that was now or exactly which version, but people have been reporting this ever since 10.5 came out it looks like (by the dates).
Not only is the desktop frozen, but every now & then every icon on the desktop gets rearranged and jammed all to the right side.
When fronzen, I find that all I have to do is click the Mac OS icon in the dock which opens a window, then I minimize that window (yellow dot button), and Finder re-activates.
Moderately annoying until all icons get rearranged (then its a major aggravation even if there's not much to rearrange).
Seems like plenty of people have it, and no real determination as to cause or fix.

  • Random problem with Workstation Manager authentication between reboots

I'm seeing some strange behavior with my XP SP2 workstations running the
ZfD 6.5 SP2 management agent (servers are Netware 6.5 OES SP5). All
workstations are local to the preferred server (same subnet and edir
partition) using the Netware Client 4.91 SP2 so no middle tier server
is configured. Preferred server is being delivered via DHCP option 85,
    etc.
By looking through the WM.log file, I've been able to narrow the
problem down to one major symptom: After starting a workstation, it may
or may not successfully authenticate to eDirectory. The workstations
are imported into the tree with valid objects and if the workstation
authenticates, all is well -- I can remote control it, all applications
come down, policies, etc. If the workstation does not authenticate,
when I try to remote control it using Console One, I get the 1456 error
(which, by searching the forums, seems to be happening to more than a
couple people here including this thread -
    http://www.ndsengineers.com/showthread.php?t=226904) and there are
usually issues with some policies or applications not coming down.
If authentication fails, it will never authenticate no matter how long
the machine stays up. If you reboot the workstation, it may or may not
authenticate. If it does not, you have to reboot it again, cross your
fingers, and hope it authenticates. If it does authenticate,
everything works perfectly. I can remote control it, all policies are
delivered, workstation associated applications are delivered, etc.
It may be important to note that I never have issues with users
authenticating. That works fine each and every time, even if the user
is logging in on a workstation that is in the un-authenticated state.
The part that baffles me is that this will happen in a seemingly random
fashion. For example, I can take a freshly imaged and imported
workstation and let it sit at a login prompt. I can see if it
authenticates or not by looking at the server console monitor screen
(or I can attempt to remote control it.) Without logging in, I will
restart it. About one minute later, it will be back at the login
screen. At this point, it may or may not be authenticated. I can
reboot it again and it may or may not authenticate. I can't determine
a pattern or a reason for this randomness. Between these reboots, I
touch absolutely nothing on the server. What would cause such
inconsistencies between reboots when nothing else is changing?
Below is some excerpts of the WM.log file that shows the machine in
both it's authenticated and not authenticated states.
I'm running out of patience with this problem (or bug) -- it's been
beating me up for over two weeks now! Thanks in advance to you folks
    for any and all help!!

No real new developments yet. I'm planning on doing some more
troubleshooting the rest of this week. I have some "long-shot"
theories but I'm not too optimistic that they'll amount to any real
solutions. Please be sure to keep this thread posted if you have any
developments and I'll be sure and do the same thing.
    Thanks!

  • Missing desktop items... privileges wonky

I have a weird problem. I have just had to reformat and reinstall everything on my computer. I have successfully completed about 90% of the job. All of the sudden I can't see what should be on my desktop and I can no longer install software to the Applications folder. I have Admin privileges so I thought I had a permission problem. I rebooted from the install CD and repaired the disk permissions. I rebooted when this process was complete and checked the permissions set for my desktop and the Application folder. All seems to be as it should be. When I log in, I seem to be getting to my desktop and everything seems to load fine (Although I still can't see drives and other items on my desktop). Suddenly, I get a blue screen for a second or two and then I get a blank desktop. I can see my dock, I can access my drives by pressing shift-command-c, but I have nothing on my desktop (I should have) and I also can't install software to the Application folder. Any ideas what is going on and why I can't install software or see m desktop items?
Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I had a similar problem when I updated to 10.4.3. If
you have Stuffit make sure it is version 10.0 or
greater as lower versions interact with OS 10.4.3,
and prevent it from finishing loading Spotlight and
    other things.
Thanks for the idea. I tried loading the latest version of stuffit and redoing the permissions.... Still have the same problem. Although, now I can install software. I simply cannot see my desktop items. I get to a desktop alright but there are no items showing on it (drives of any kind, a bunch of files I know are there, etc...). I can access MY desktop by using the shift-command-c key strokes and navigating to it, but I can't see the items on my desktop proper.

  • Icons rearrange themselves!

    Hi,
In my applications folder, I keep it in the icon view mode, and I arrange them with all Apple programs on the left side, and all my sharewares, etc. on the right side. This has worked well for a few years . . . when all of a sudden, in Snow Leopard, every few hours, as I look in the Applications folder - OMG! they've all rearranged themselves alphabetically ??
I'll spend 10 minutes rearranging them back to how I like them - they'll stay that way for a day? or an hour, it changes, and then when I look in the Applications folder again - they did it again! Rearranged themselves!!
    Anyone know what's going on?
All maintenence things are done on my computer - latest in upgrades, etc!
    Thanks,
    Larry

But, just asking, do you know if I did your idea and deleted the main plist - would that have effected ALL my folders, which I suspect it would?
Normally when you delete a plist file associated with any application, that application will usually behave as if it's never been used that that particular user before.
There are some exceptions. For example, you can create a custom background image for each folder. Those choices are stored with the folder, not the plist file. This is why when you download applications such as Firefox and open the installer, you see a Finder folder that has a background with icon placements and background "art" (in the case of Firefox the "art" is really a diagram trying to illustrate to the user that they should drag the application icon to their "Applications" folder) even though you have never opened the folder before.
Since there's no hard rule as to what is stored in an application's "plist" file, you can never be sure what will happen when you get rid of the old plist file. This is why I generally don't just delete the file. I typically either drag to desktop or drag to trash (but don't empty trash). That way if the removal had any undesired side-effects I can always drag the original plist file back.
    Glad to hear it's fixed!

  • Missing desktop items

While using the amazon mp3 downloader, an error message popped up and when I cleared that pop-up all my desktop items went missing.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
