  • [SOLVED] Random logout from Gnome 3

    Hi all,
For about a week now I have been experiencing random logouts while running Gnome 3. I can't find any connection with what I am doing at the time except *maybe* that the computer is under load (numerical simulations, sometimes running into Swap space). I found a few other posts saying it might be a Xorg server crash, so am posting the text from Xorg.0.log.old.
It seems there might be a problem with my nvidia driver... anyone have any experience with this?

Well, I can't say whether your logouts are caused by the nvidia driver, but there' s a way to figure that out - switch to Nouveau. Just for diagnostic purposes, you don't have to keep using it after you solve this, but the proprietary nvidia driver is giving trouble quite a few people, so I think it might be worth a shot.

  • OS crashed and cannot switch to console model when logout from gnome

should this isskue relate to gnome update?

What do you mean by "dead"? For me, dead is complete system freeze. Are you thrown to a TTY console? Is it just a blinking cursor? What's the problem?

    I found a solution in this post. Just added this line "a1:2345:wait:/sbin/agetty -a USERNAME -8 -s 38400 tty1 linux" before "c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 -s 38400 tty1 linux" to my inittab.

  • Mac Menubar applet for Xfce/GNOME panels!

    AUR: for Xfce 4.4 | GNOME  2.16
    It's in my repository ("xfce4-macmenu-plugin" and gnome-macmenu-applet):
    [AqD]
    Server = http://people.os-zen.net/aqd/repository
You also need gtk2-aqd >= 2.10.6-2 from my repo and xfce 4.4 from shadowhand's or gnome 2.16
To move or remove the applet, move mouse pointer to the rightmost place of the menubar, where you will see something appearing like a flat button, then: (for Xfce) right-click on it, or (for GNOME) left-click on it, don't release button until you select the menu item.
You can right-click to get the panel menu (for restart/quit) if there is no window focused.
Problems and solutions: · GNOME/GTK2 apps' menubars cannot be restored to the original state once you use this applet. However, they wouldn't die even if the applet/panel crashes - restarting panel will catch them back.
    · After you restart the panel, the menubar of currently active window may not be visible, unfocus/focus (or shade/unshade) the main window will make it appear again
    · Restarting WM may cause some menubars to disappear - restarting panel will solve this
    Cheers!

  • [solved] init 5 and logout from Xorg session -- crash

    Hi guys and gals!
Hope this is the right forum.
I have a strange issue here with restarting Xorg sessions. As long as I just boot up or use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to start and shutdown X, there's no problem at all, session manager (kdm) comes up properly and everything is just fine. But if I logout from the environment  (KDE3), Xorg crashes and I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or even full of strange y" symbols on vc/7.
On the other virtual consoles I'm able to run startx and this is still in runlevel 5!
Here are the last 50 lines from Xorg.0.log after such a crash:

Of course, I can switch to runlevel 3 and then 5 again to get a session manager, but you have to be root for this and I got other users here. So this is quite stupid.
I can't remember to had this problem before, it seems to be since my update yesterday. Repositories only current, extra and community, pacnew files are all merged with my configs. Don't see any cause.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks.

This is already in another thread : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43799
It's probably a nvidia bug, but there is a workaround given at the end of the other thread.

  • How to logout from a session

I have an application which is configured with SSO, but I am not able to understand how can I logout from the session.
can anyone please help me out with this issue.
    Thanks,
    Orton

Are the pages in different webapps? In Tomcat, for example, you'll have one session per webapp. Invalidating the session for one webapp won't invalidate a session for another webapp.
This is handled by Tomcat's Single-Sign On valve (this needs to be configured in TOMCAT/conf/server.xml).

  • Logout from AM session through Proramatically ( using an http request)

    Hi Everyone,
I want to logout from the AccessManager via Programatically through an http request? Is there any such url by invoking an HTTP post request we can logout from the Access Manager session?
    Thanks,
    Ranjith.

    Hi,
You can do a post to /amserver/UI/Logout ar you ca programatically destroy the session using something like:
    SSOTokenManager manager = SSOTokenManager.getInstance();
    SSOToken token = manager.createSSOToken(cookieValue.trim());
    manager.destroyToken(token);

  • Stopping xfce panel autostarting in xfce session...

OK, I've looked OVER ALL THE INTERWEBZ for this one and I've found nothing, not even in this forum, unless I'm doing it wrong.
I prefer to use pypanel over the xfce4-panel. I have pypanel autostarting when I log into my xfce session. Problem is is that the xfce4-panel also autostarts, and I don't want it to. The xfce4-panel doesn't appear in my "Autostarted Applications" list neither.
    How do I resolve this?

Hi! When the xfce panel is running, I open up the panel manager, try to remove teh panel and get "You can't remove the last panel. Quit program?" So I do. But still the panel still boots on startup.

One (very) ugly way to do it would be to "pkill xfce4-panel" at startup and then "exec pypanel" afterwards...

  • XFCE session locked

    Hi all,
this goes to a problem with XFCE as the new GNOME desktop did not suit my needs.
XFCE was run fine until a recent update of GNOME packages but it may also be due to incorrect shutdown. Now there's a locked XFCE session (GDM in use) which I cannot terminate or unlock.
Which steps do I need to undertake to kill the session and/or screensaver manually from terminal?
    Kind regards,
    scoona

You did help me until now, thanks. Alas, the error is still here. /var/lock is clean except firewall entry, which is fine. A reboot didn't kill the session/lock situation. The session directory in .config (homedir) is empty.
Two other details may be important:
    - Starting gdm from command line displays the login screen fine, but the pointer changes to a watch and reflects my user as logged in.
    - Logging in as user after init 3 immediately starts up X, which is not intended as I don't like autologin. I dunno the reason for this one.
I've changed inittab to use gdm instead of xdm but this does not help.
    Any remarks please?

  • Xfce session not saving

xfce session isn't saving at the logout... even though i've checked the save at logout option.  i abs-ed xfce4-session to make sure that --disable-legacy-sm wasn't used during the compile and it wasn't.  i don't quite understand what the problem is.  i edit the panels, wallpaper, etc. and it call comes back to the default settings when i restart xfce.

check permission of ~/.cache and ~/.config files ... if they are owned by root, change that to your user to read/write

  • [SOLVED] update removed menu items in lxpanel menu & in gnome-panel

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.
in lxpanel, the menu only shows 'run' and 'logout'.
i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...
    [chris: ~]$ alacarte

    parser.Parse("", True)
xml.parsers.expat.ExpatError: no element found: line 1, column 0
naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.
i looked at /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py with cat, and there is nothing super-obviously wrong with the script.
    also:
    [chris: ~]$ ls /usr/share/applications
    abiword.desktop
    alacarte.desktop
    aldm-gui.desktop
    assistant.desktop
    at-properties.desktop
    avahi-discover.desktop
    banshee-1-audiocd.desktop
    banshee-1.desktop
    banshee-1-media-player.desktop
    baobab.desktop
    *and so on*
    so those didn't vanish.
    any ideas?

so i saw this error message....
** (gnome-panel:4408): WARNING **: Error loading menu layout from "/home/chris/.config/menus/settings.menu": Error on line 1 char 1: Document was empty or contained only whitespace
the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!
    [chris: ~/.config/menus]$ mv settings.menu settings.menubackup
now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.
    edit2:
    alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
    alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

  • Adwaita gnome-panel font too dim

I use fallback mode with a black background and a completely transparent panel. Adwaita may not be the best theme, but I'm not really interested in trying out all sorts of themes from gnome-look.org. The font color for unhovered items in the window list and clock cannot be seen.
I understand that gtk-3 themes are CSS now. I can't figure out which setting is for the font color of those items though.
Can I modify the theme in ~/.config/gtk-3.0 (settings.ini) maybe, without touching it system wide?
Is there a way to reload themes without restarting my gnome session to make it easier to play around with this stuff.

I guess this upstream commit will help:

  • GNOME-Shell with GNOME-Panel look

For all the GNOME-Users out there.
I think a lot of people would like that the GNOME-Shell have an options which enables to use it like the current GNOME-Panel (from the design).
So there is a bottom panel which shows open windows and things like that.
I made a bug-report for that and if you like the idea you can vote for it or leave a comment: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625587

I can't say I'm very surprised.  Although it would be nice.
Once I got a glimpse of gnome-shell I knew I wasn't ever going to like it, so I figured I would ditch GNOME before it came out (when I would leave GNOME anyway).  Xfce and I have been good buddies since then, though I may end up on Openbox.

  • [GNOME] Panel Items Will Not Stay Arranged

For some odd reason or another, the items on the GNOME panels will occasionally stray from the arrangements they were put into during a prior session.  I have tried locking all of the items to the panels, but every now and then, I will log in to find that a few panel items have once again rearranged themselves.  On a similar note, the notification tray will expand itself to allow a new icon to spawn, but will not always shrink once the icon has been destroyed, leaving unsightly gaps between other items.
Is this an issue for other GNOME users, and are there any remedies to these issues?

I experience this when is switch to a low resolution, e. g. by starting a game. Gnome-Panel then rearranges fixed items because itself scales to the lower resolution. There is currently no fix for that.
