Probably you need to run an xhost command on the server.
Wide open is
xhost +
And remember in x windows, the server is the thing that is doing the presentation layer actions (the display) for the client (probably Universal as long as you're running xwindows Installer)
and of course your $DISPLAY environment variable has to be to the right place.

I know the Xlib errors can be ignored. I was more concerned about the Alsa errors that I get. As far as I know, the sound works perfectly on my machine. I would just like to know why I get these errors then, and if possible to get rid of them.

1) DAEMONS has alsa, MODULES doesnt have anything sound related -- infact it only has !iTCO_wdt which I need to blacklist for udev to actually complete.
2) modprobe.conf is empty and i renamed /etc/modprobe.d/sound
3) renamed /etc/asound.conf and /etc/asound.state.
4) locate shows me this :

No, .Xauthority is not obsolete, and is in fact an important file of the system.
No LM manager, inittab is
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
Actually you are using a login manager, which is xdm in your case.
Well, xdm should be creating an .Xauthority file, but it isn't. And i have no idea, why it isn't.
Now you can investigate why xdm isn't doing so, or maybe try slim or something similar and see if they do create the file. -
X11vnc start at boot - please help with xauthority
I followed the direction here to setup the x11vnc.service
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=168756
but all i get is an error like below
23/02/2014 18:00:23 XOpenDisplay(":0") failed.
23/02/2014 18:00:23 Trying again with XAUTHLOCALHOSTNAME=localhost ...
23/02/2014 18:00:23 ***************************************
23/02/2014 18:00:23 *** XOpenDisplay failed (:0)
*** x11vnc was unable to open the X DISPLAY: ":0", it cannot continue.
*** There may be "Xlib:" error messages above with details about the failure.
Some tips and guidelines:
** An X server (the one you wish to view) must be running before x11vnc is
started: x11vnc does not start the X server. (however, see the -create
option if that is what you really want).
** You must use -display <disp>, -OR- set and export your $DISPLAY
environment variable to refer to the display of the desired X server.
- Usually the display is simply ":0" (in fact x11vnc uses this if you forget
to specify it), but in some multi-user situations it could be ":1", ":2",
or even ":137". Ask your administrator or a guru if you are having
difficulty determining what your X DISPLAY is.
** Next, you need to have sufficient permissions (Xauthority)
to connect to the X DISPLAY. Here are some Tips:
- Often, you just need to run x11vnc as the user logged into the X session.
So make sure to be that user when you type x11vnc.
- Being root is usually not enough because the incorrect MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE
file may be accessed. The cookie file contains the secret key that
allows x11vnc to connect to the desired X DISPLAY.
- You can explicitly indicate which MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE file should be used
by the -auth option, e.g.:
x11vnc -auth /home/someuser/.Xauthority -display :0
x11vnc -auth /tmp/.gdmzndVlR -display :0
you must have read permission for the auth file.
See also '-auth guess' and '-findauth' discussed below.
** If NO ONE is logged into an X session yet, but there is a greeter login
program like "gdm", "kdm", "xdm", or "dtlogin" running, you will need
to find and use the raw display manager MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE file.
Some examples for various display managers:
gdm: -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth
-auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth
kdm: -auth /var/lib/kdm/A:0-crWk72
-auth /var/run/xauth/A:0-crWk72
xdm: -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-XQvaJk
dtlogin: -auth /var/dt/A:0-UgaaXa
Sometimes the command "ps wwwwaux | grep auth" can reveal the file location.
Starting with x11vnc 0.9.9 you can have it try to guess by using:
-auth guess
(see also the x11vnc -findauth option.)
Only root will have read permission for the file, and so x11vnc must be run
as root (or copy it). The random characters in the filenames will of course
change and the directory the cookie file resides in is system dependent.
but if i ssh and run the command with "- auth" x11vnc starts just fine.
Not sure what i am doing wrong.
Here is what i use at the command line to start x11vnc
Note: Always seem to need "sudo" if i have to start x11vnc when i have not logged using the display manager yet
sudo /usr/bin/x11vnc -rfbauth .x11vnc/passwd -display :0 -shared -forever -solid -bgWell, I found out what was wrong. A little clod of dirt was bridging a gap between the positive and negatve terminals of two resistors on the motherboard. I cleaned it off with a little water on a paper towel, and now the computer works fine.

X11 ERROR: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Hi all,
I've problem with X11 on os x 10.6.2.
Every time I move my macbook pro from office to home (and viceversa)
X11 needs to be quit and restarted otherwise I get the following
error:
Xlib: connection to ".0" refused by server
and X11 won't launch windows. Now this error is certainly linked
to the fact that the computer changes IP address.
What's the best way to solve the problem ?
below you find the first lines of my .xinitrc

Error X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory
I'm trying to compile some C-code using gcc, and I keep getting the following error: "X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory". I know that I need to "somehow" identify the Path information for these X11 lib's, etc, but I do not know HOW to do that. I tried adding path definitions to my .profile file - did not work. I have X11 installed, and supposedly I installed the SDK. Can anyone help me with this
If you're not sure if you have the SDKs, can you confirm you have the files under /Developer? Check for /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/usr/X11R6/include/X11
I don't remember having to do anything special to get gcc to find these files.
From what I've noted, the usual trigger seems to be that the X11SDK.pkg package wasn't installed.
Typical PATH export is:
export PATH="/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin"
If you're working with Fink, there's a call to the following needed:
. /sw/bin/init.sh
See http://finkproject.org/doc/users-guide/install.php
But I'd first make sure the X11 SDK was installed. I'd guess that is missing. -
Error: xcb_xlib_unlock:Assertion 'c- xlib.lock' failed
Please help me to resolve the following error.
Error: xcb_xlib_unlock:Assertion 'c->xlib.lock' failed
Our application has the reports module, where we are using the bar charts
to display the reports. For the charts we are using awt packages and jfreechart
libraries to display the reports.
When we deployed the application on fedora8 on any of the instance, when we try to click the link of the reports, the above error is occured and we are not able to display the reports. And also the server is getting down when this lock is obtained.
This is very serious problem we feel. Please provide us the solution for the problem. This error affects MANY programs which use java, including those that use a java environment for installation. OpenOffice is a prime example. Apparently this error is an internal bug or interaction between java and xcb and will never be patched in java 1.6.
I tried the various suggested fixes but none worked. The only one which works (yesterday!) is to upgrade to the latest build (b24) of the java 1.7 release candidate jdk.
I first attempted to install only the jre (28MB) but unfortunately, it uses the existing java 1.6 environment and so fails with the same error. The jdk (58MB) installed from the 'self-installing' Fedora bin file without problems and I was then able to install OpenOffice 2.3.1 without difficulty. This is on Fedora 8.
The page I found was: http://download.java.net/jdk7
Hope this helps.

Hey, I didn't really take a look at your errors, but... Have you tried the mate-desktop.org repo? There's no need to compile anything if you install from there. Just add
[mate]
Server = http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/archlinux/$arch
to /etc/pacman.conf then do 'pacman -S mate' for a basic install, or 'pacman -S mate mate-extra mate-extras' for a full install.
Thanks bro, it works now! -

Display Error while installing Oracle 11g R2 in RHEL 5 !!!
hi
I am trying to install Oracle 11g R2 in RHEL 5. When i run ./runInstaller it didnt pass one checking..which showed an error:
>>> Could not execute auto check for display colors using command /usr/X11R6/bin/xdpyinfo. Check if the DISPLAY variable is set. Failed <<<<
i run xhost +
it showed:
[oracle@localhost database]$ xhost +
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"
i exported the DISPLAY too..its workedd..but still its showing the same error..
here iam trying to install the oracle 11g on RHEL 5 in a common PC...not using any Vmware or Virtual box and not trying to install it from remote PC. But still iam facing the same error.
Kindly help me to resolve this issue.
Shiyas MHi;
Firstly you are working on server or you use some telnet program like putty? If you are working on server than issue is:
as root
xhost +
than run xlock and be sure u can see clock
than su - oracle
xhost + once more than try to run ./runInstaller
If you connect server remotly than i use vncwier
1. as root run export DISPLAY=hostname or IP:1.0
2. xhost +
3. run xclock and see u see it on vncviwer
4. su - oracle
5. run export DISPLAY again
6. xhost
7. /runInstaller
Regard

If anyone knows how to resolve this error, I would appreciate it.
I have tried all kinds of suggestions but nothing is working on my Oracle9iR2 on SuSe 8.2 install, presently.
Thanks.HI!
Even I was facing this problem. You just set your DISPALY variable after switching to oracle user from root(# su - oracle). After seeing this $ prompt set this variable. $ DISPLAY=<your IP address of local Machine:0.0>; export DISPLAY. Actual command is $ DISPLAY=10.0.0.1:0.0; export DISPLAY then run runInstaller script from your CDROM or DVD mount point.
Hope this solution may help you.

This forum is devoted to the JVM running inside the database. You should post question about IAS to one of the forums under http://forums.oracle.com/forums/index.jsp?cat=13.
Anyway the error you get means that during the installation of IAS the installer (or another component...) needs to open a "connection" to the X-server.
You should review the configuration of the environment variable DISPLAY. To check your config you can start any X application, e.g. xterm or xclock. If your config is ok the corresponding windows should be displayed, otherwise the error "Can't connect to X11..." is raised.
