XML advantage

Can any one please tell me why should i use the xmlfeatures of a database. Let's take a simple example of inserting values to a table and condiser that the data is available in the form of xml. I can do this insertion in a very simple way by parsing the xml in the client side and sending the individual values to a stored procedure which inserts the values using an insert statement. Rather than doing this way, why should i pass the xml string to the stored procedure where i use the INSERTXML function to save the row. Does this offer any advantage over the traditional insert statement. If so how? Kindly excuse if the question is very silly. I am new to the database part, It will be very helpful for me if I get the right answer.

With the built-in XML functionality, you don't have to parse XML yourself and it gives better performance.

I have to store users workspace information in XML file so that user can retreive it later. The information that needed to be stored can be any thing. This XML file will be stores in oracle back end.
Well i am not totally well aware of XML advantages and how well we can use it.

What will probably happen is that the XML structure is your template eg
Store1 xml
<menu> store1 menu</menu>
Store2 xml
<menu>store2 menu</menu>
From your xml dtd you can derive what is needed to create a Java model which you will have to populate with the values of the XML tags.
Then your gui will reflect any changes made in the model
If you do a search on sun for XML there is a tutorial which may be of use. Also depending how big your project is you may wish to look at JAXB

The best way i found was to put a equals and then double quotes... this only works for excel however it will allow you to cut and paste (ie to use the value to search in Oracle) and also to do vlookups.
In a bit more detail:
- I used word to generate my default table
- this created a field INVOICE_NUM
- in the cell in the table i put = " before the INVOICE_NUM field and then put the closing " afterwards.
The theory is that excel will concatenate the values together... because it has quotes around it, it will treat it as a string rather than simply a value.
For any other formats this will not work.
I'm guessing most people have moved on and resolved this some other way, but just thought I'd share the wealth!

Advantages Of XML Type Views

I am pretty new to XML Type views, and just want to ask few questions to every one. May be they do or don't belong here.. but help me out...
1. What are the advantages of XML Type Views?
2. Why should I prefer to use XML Type Views? (Is it only for querying the relational or XML data and result in XML format?)
3. I have a scenario, here I would like to develop a web service which would ultimately call a stored procedure to get relational data. Something like a DAL(Data Access Layer). In this scenario, what are the advantages that I am able to benefit if I use XML Type view with out using the regular stored procedures, which would give relational data(Not in XML format).

1) To define views that output relational data or object relational data in a XML format
2) You give the database more info regarding abouts its XML output / design via XML Schema and or inview defined integers so Oracle is capable to optimize the generation of its XML output
3) Don't over do it. The functionality called Native Database Web Services (NDWS) is already providing this for you natively in Oracle 11g and onwards.

Advantages of storing data in XML

Hi --
I am working with Oracle Database for long time but i haven't used XML much during this time. I am just trying to figureout the advantages of storing the data in XML (XMLType column).
If i have millions of records in multiple tables, is there any advantage in terms of performance & management of data when i store the data in XMLType.
For example:
If i am storing employee details in a table, i can create bunch of columns in a table and store the data, or i can create an XMLType column and store the complete data in that column. I am trying to figureout whether storing in XML format is better than in separate columns, especially if i have lot of data.

Advantages and Disadvantages of XML over CSV

Hi friends,
We have a requirement in our implimentation project. We are implimenting HR module. The company is using SABA for Education and Certification.
We are implimenting Education and certification in BW and the data for BW will be comming from SABA.
We had a discussion on thursday about the integration of SABA to BW. We can do it through DBconnect or by using XI and for this there is time and cost involved.
The techical team has come with some idea where there will give the data in the form of XML or in CSV format.
I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of each and also please consider the performance point in view.
I would also like to know about the things that need to be considered if we process the data in multiple files.
Please give me inputs and the answers will be appreciated with valuable points.

Hi,
my advice is to go for CSV anytime compared to XML.
XML is first made available to the BW system via SOAP ( Simple Object Acess protocol) interface. Next it is updated into the required data targets as before , Via a data source for the myself source system.
SOAP = XML+HTTP.
XML cannot be used for mass data. It is only to load small data into SAP BW on a single document level.
BW provides flat file interface so, there is no all these hassles in case of CSV. go for CSV

I am attempting to upload a manually edited WADConfig xml to my VM. The WAD service is functioning correctly, I needed to add some custom WinEventLogs. The prescribed steps result in an error.
What am I overlooking?

Since Azure SDK 2.5 uses the extension model the diagnostics extension, the configuration and the connection string to the diagnostic storage are no longer part of the deployment package and cscfg. All the diagnostics configuration is contained within the
wadcfgx. The advantage with this approach is that diagnostics agent and settings are decoupled from the project and can be dynamically enabled and updated even after your application is deployed.
Due to this change some existing workflows need to be rethought – instead of configuring the diagnostics as part of the application that gets deployed to each environment you can first deploy the application to the environment and then apply the diagnostics
configuration for it. When you publish the application from Visual Studio this process is done automatically for you. However if you were deploying your application outside of VS using PowerShell then you have to install the extension separately through
PowerShell.
There PowerShell cmdlets for managing the diagnostics extensions on a Cloud Service are -

11i EBS XML Publisher Report with Multiple Data Source

I need to create XML Publisher report in 11i EBS pulling data from another 10.7 EBS Instance as well as 11i EBS in single report.
I am not allowed to create extract or use db links.
My problem is how to create Data Source Connection using Java Concurrent Program.
The approach I am trying is
1. create Java concurrent program to establish connection to 10.7 instance.
2. Will write the SQL queries in Data Tempalete with 2 Data Source 1 for 11i EBS and 2 for 10.7 EBS
3. Template will show the data from both query in 1 report..
Is there any other way to proceed using datasource API...

The query should be same @ detail level, only the template has to be different for summary and details.
@runtime, user can choose to see the detail/summary
Disadvantage, if the data is huge,
advantage , only one report.
option2:
create two separate reports summary and details
and create diff data and diff layout and keep it as different report
Advantage, query will perform based on the user run report, summary/detail, so that you can write efficient query.
Dis advantage , two reports query/template to be maintained.

Retrieving and using nested xml

If my xml is in the form of multiple nested "nodes?" then how
can i go about serilizing them and retrieving them properly?
Example, if my xml looked like this:

then displaying the value would be easy to do in my Datagrid,
i would just say use "myHTTPservice.lastResult.data.value" and it
would display in the grid but if my data is more complex like this:

<name>name\3</name>
</heading>

How would I in theory go about serializing the say "name"
into an array my datagrid could use? if i say the dataprovider is
"myHTTPservice.lastResult.heading.name then i dont get an array,
how do say i want all the names found in the heading to be put in
an array? do have to do this manually on result from my HTTPservice
and if so any pointers would be good! thank you!

I think you understand it pretty well. Just through the info
on E4X and it will probably make a lot of sense to you now.
Just keep in mind you aren't getting an "Array" or
"ArrayCollection" but an XMLList which acts like an array where you
can get its length, address the items using the [ ] operator, etc.
When using an XMLList as a dataProvider, it would be better
to convert it to an XMLListCollection so you can take advantage of
data binding should you need to change the XML on the fly, such as
editing nodes, adding nodes, or removing nodes. And you can use the
Collection cursor views, filtering, and sorting.

XML Data Load into releational structures

Hi,
I am very unexperienced in using XML and have the problem
to import very large XML data files into existing reletional structures.
In our production DB we don't use the java engine, so
that PL/SQL an the SQL Loader are the only available ways to import the data.
At the moment we get flat files and use the SQL Loader utility. But an interface to a new system send XML data now and I have to fill the same old releational structure with the new data.
Can anybody give me a hint about the best technic for an high performance import. Are there any existing tools for the relational mapping?

You are right. We only want to break the XML to fill our relational structures. We don't need the XML data further on. But we have to load the data in temporary structures, because we have to transform the data in our own format. (The system which delivers the XML data is external and uses another data model)
Is there no more elegant way with use of databse built in technics? The XML data we get can be validated against a XML schema.
So I thought, it could be a way to load the XML in the XDB and register the schema in the database. After that store the XML data in the default generated object relational structures and then programm the data transformation and the data flow between these default structures to our target data structures with PL/SQL.
I don't know if this way is performant enough.
If I use an external tool i have to code the relational mapping outside the database and insert the data with use of ODBC in temporary structures which i have to create manualy.
So I hoped to find a way to load the data in any relational structure using the advantages of XML and XML schema and code the neccasary logic inside the DB.
Do you have any further hints for my problem?

Problem with web service proxy and connections.xml

Design Choices and is LiveCycle needed? best practices for using RTMP/AMF over HTTP/XML communicatio

Hi,
I am new to flex/RIA. I am exploring different design choices especially in client server communication. On client side we will be using Flash based RIA (using Actions scripts).
There will be some simple forms (like for login, registration, payments etc) and some simple reports including with several graphs and charts. Each chart might have 1000 to 1500 data points etc. There are not video or audio content as such. On server side we have Servlets, java API and some EJBs to provide the business logic and real time prices/content (price update is usually every 10 seconds) /data. Some of the content will be static as well.
I have following questions in my mind. Is it worth it to use RTMP/AMF channels for the followings?
1. For simple forms processing (Mapping Actions scripts classes to Java classes). Like to display/retrieve/update data for/from registration forms.
a. If yes, why? Am I going to be stuck with LCDS? Is it worth it? What could be the cons for heavy usage/traffic scenarios
b. If not what are the alternates? Should I create the web services? Or only servlets are sufficient (ie. Only HTTP+Java based server side with no LCDS+RTMP+AMF)? All forms need to communicate on secure channel.
2. For pushing the real time prices/content which we may need to update every 15 seconds on user interface using graphs and charts. Can I do it with some standard J2EE/JMS way with RIA (Flex) on front-end? i.e. Flash application will keep pulling data from some topic. Data can be updated after few secs or few minutes which cant be predicted.
3. Are there any scalability issues for using RTMP? What happens if concurrent users increase 10 times within a year?
4. What are the real advantages of using RTMP/AMF instead of simple HTTP/HTTPS probably using xml based objects
5. Do I need to use LCDS if I am using AMF only on client side? Basically I mean if I am sending an object in form of xml from a servlet. Can some technology in Flash (probably AMF) in client side map it an Action script object?
6. What are the primary advantages of using LCDS in a system? Is there any alternate solutions? Can I use some standard solutions for data push technologies?
I would like that my server side implementation can be used by multiple types of clients e.g. RIA browser based, mobile based, third party software (any technology) etc.
I appreciate if you can kindly refer me to some reading materials which can help me deciding the above. If this is not the right place to post this message then please do refer me to the place where I can post such questions.

Hi Jalal,
Let me see if I can help with some of your questions
1. Yes, you can use LCDS for simple forms processing. Any time you want to
move data between the Flex client and the server, LCDS (or its free Open
source cousin BlazeDS) is going to help. I would expect you would use the
mx:RemoteObject MXML tag to invoke server side code, passing it the form
data input by the application user.
2. If you need to push near real-time data, LCDS gives you the RTMP channel
which can scale quite nicely. You can then use the mx:Consumer MXML tag to
subscribe the clients to the messages, which can come from almost anywhere,
include JMS topics or queues.
3. RTMP (included in LCDS) is the best option for scaling to tens of
thousands of users and the LCDS servers can be clustered to proved better
scaling.
4. The AMF3 protocol used over the RTMP channels performs much faster than
simple XML over HTTP. See this blog posting for some tests:

5. If you are sending a Flex application XML, then I would recommend using
the E4X API to work with the XML. This is a pretty nice and powerful way to
work with XML. If you want Actionscript objects (and probably better
performance), then using AMF serialization to Actionscript objects is the
way to go.
6. Primary advantages? There are many, but mainly you can avoid thinking
about the plumbing and concentrate on solving your application and business
logic problems.

Normally if you have no idea about X, the first thing you should do is google "X tutorial". You will find plenty of them out there. And the advantage is, they are better written than whatever we spend two minutes throwing together here. Not to mention that it saves us the two minutes.
But if you have specific questions with your SAX parser when you get it going, then ask them here. Actually, ask them in the XML forum here, not this one.
