XML and database of documents

Please help to a newcomer to XML:
I intend to create XML based database of documents and present
it on Web.
Documents are of fixed structure however few elements will be up
to ;K of size. They will be static.
Total size of a document is less then 4K, expect some 10,000+
entries ?
Need to
- Search in DB by keywords and also support free search in
documents. Once found and selected,full document is displayed.
- Create discussion topic with threads, where contributions may
have pointers to selected elements of these documents and these
links are higlighted.
Please advise how to work on it and also how to handle inserts
into DB.
- Should one store the whole documents including element tags as
CLOB ?
Data will be prepared from scratch so my though is to
prepare some templates to be used by a XML editor to prepare
XML files. Create DTD (or use an existing one) and use parser
(which one is suitable?) to validate correctness.
Q1: Some elements ttheoreticallyv ask for being handled as
attributes. There are, however some 50+ possible values and I
donFt think a DTD should be prepared to handle this by itself!
Is this appropirate ?
Q2: How to insert data ? Are there tools available or should
one process data using Java or PL/SQL and then insert into
appropriate tables?
Q3: Use interMedia to search DB, then XSQL to retrieve relevant
data and present via XSL ?
Thanks !

Hi,
Thank you for your answer,
Actually this is the way I'm doing the merge process today: using Java code with DOM to merge all documents to one XML document.
I'm looking for ways to not using the DOM parsing becasue it is very expensive in CPU and memory (DOM is the worst XML parser in a performance point of view).
SAX parsing is also not appropriate because the merge process that I need to do is vey complicated.
This is the reason why I thought of using XSLT.
My question is if XSLT can do the work or is it way off?
Thanks,

  • Mapping XML and Database

    Hi,
    I have a design problem in my application. It goes on like this:
    For every XML Request-Response query, I have a Session Bean which accesses database tables. I have to refer to 4-5 tables to fulfil each request. All the tables follow the parent-child relationship(onto 4-5 levels, depending upon the number of queries) which means for one row in parent table there are multiple rows in child tables and so on.
    Now, in my XML response, I need to follow the same schema in form of tags. For example:
    <table1Info>
    <data1>1212</data1>
    <table2Info> (tags could be multiple)
    <data2>1212</data2>
    <table3Info> (tags could be multiple)
    <data3>1212</data3>
    <table4Info> (tags could be multiple)
    <data4>1212</data3>
    </table4Info>
    </table3Info>
    </table2Info>
    </table1Info>
    So far, so good! I can happily select data from multiple tables and generate the XML response by serially concatenating the response string. My problem is that I want to write a single query to fetch all the data instead of fetching data corresponding the parent tag and then making another query to fetch data from child table(which corresponds to child tag).
    If i do a join of all tables in a single query, I need to do a lot of checking in java code inside the loop and figure out when a parent data has changed and the upcoming values correspond to next parent data(and thereby close all the child tags and open the next parent tag). It can sometimes become quite messy and cumbersome. Is there a cleaner way of doing it? Any ideas wud be welcome...Please let me know if i need to elaborate more ..
    Thanks,
    Prashant

    What is wrong with issuing the query each time for the child? Performance? It more accurately models what you are trying to do than the approach you mention.

  • XML and Database

    Hi,
    I have a XML file with Emp data on it. I have to load(data) into database(ver8.1.6).
    How can i do this ? Does any one have script ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Do you want to load the XML document in its entirity? Or do you want to parse the data out and insert it in a table.

  • AFP, error code 50 and database (Entourage) documents

    We see some strange behavior lately: we have Novell servers in aur institute (University, with latest updates applied) to which we connect via AFP. The problem is, copying some documents from the finder returns an error 50. Mostly (but not exclusively) databases documents (like databse of Entourage 2004 or backup databases from SOHONotes 6.3) return the error. Creating e.g. a new Word document, saving to the finder and copying to AFP volume retrurns NO error! (same is true for .xls). The behavior seems to be erratic: copying a document from AFP volume to finder, then deleting the original and copying back works for certain documents, for other not... Even more strange: on some days we can copy these documents (automatic backup to distant volume), on some others not...
    What we tried until now: runnig Applejack (all tasks including cleaning caches and VM) in single user mode, renaming documents, numerous log-outs and reboots , rebuilding database(s), .... Making .zip or .dmg from the incriminated documents does not wort either...
    Interestingly manually creating a backup from SOHONotes at destination (directly on AFP volume) works without problem...
    Anybody with the same problem, or even a solution???

    It is best in such
    scenarios to operate on your files locally, and use
    networking just for "sneakernet" and backup purposes.
    Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is: it is exactly the way I am using aour AFP volumes!! The corollary being, that if I cannot beam up my backups, they are of very little use... I always work locally and have chronosync programmed to copy all changed files at the end of the day...

    I have a ton of documents and databases in AppleWorks v 6.0 that I can no longer open on my MacBook Pro.  Is there any way to recover this info?  Some documents can be opened and resaved with textedit, but not my database with all important addresses.

    I tried Peggy's List > Select All > Copy > Paste into an AW spreadsheet suggestion.
    In my case, pasting into the spreadsheet lost all text formatting (mostly text set to bold). The results of formulas were pasted, and checkboxes were pasted as "on" or "off". The DB did not contain any pop-up menus or radio buttons, but I expect they would transfer as a number showing the list position of the chosen item.
    Pasting the copied List view data into a Numbers table gave a result similar to that with AppleWorks. I selected B2 as the target cell (for top left cell of the pasted data) to avoid any effects of posting into a header row or column. Bold and regular text formatting looked the same as it had in AW's List view.
    Based on that, I'd slip the 'paste into an AppleWorks Spreadsheet step, and paste directly into a Numbers Table.

  • Need help with XML response to refresh document with context and prompts

    I've been working with the Restful api for a few weeks now and have been able to figure out most of what I need to automate testing of our reports. However, one task that I have not been able to figure out is how to refresh a document that contains both a context and two prompts for dates.
    Here is what I have tried, and what the API responds with.
    1) I queried the API for this document's parameters using the following call after logging in -
    headers = {:accept=>'application/xml', :content_type=>'application/xml', :x_sap_logontoken=>@token}
    url = "http://our.url.net:6405/biprws/raylight/v1/documents/12345/parameters"
    RestClient.get(url, headers)
    The response from the API is:
    <parameters>
        <parameter dpId="DP0" type="context" optional="false">
            <id>0</id>
            <technicalName>cQuery 1</technicalName>
            <name>Select a context</name>
            <answer type="Text" constrained="true">
                <info cardinality="Single">
                    <lov partial="false">
                        <values>
                            <value id="CTX_1">LOAN</value>
                            <value id="CTX_9">LOAN_APPLICATION</value>
                        </values>
                    </lov>
                    <values>
                        <value id="CTX_1">LOAN</value>
                        <value id="CTX_9">LOAN_APPLICATION</value>
                    </values>
                    <previous>
                        <value id="CTX_9">LOAN_APPLICATION</value>
                    </previous>
                </info>
                <values>
                    <value id="CTX_9">LOAN_APPLICATION</value>
                </values>
            </answer>
        </parameter>
    </parameters>
    2) This tells me I need to supply a context, so I then replace my RestClient.get call with a RestClient.put call with the following payload:
    <parameters>
         <parameter>
                <id>0</id>
                <answer>
                      <values>
                            <value id=\"CTX_9\"/>
                      </values>
                </answer>
          </parameter>
    </parameters>
    3) This satisfies the context portion of the refresh. The API replies with the following response, telling me I need to answer two prompts -
    <parameters>
         <parameter dpId=\"DP0\" type=\"prompt\" optional=\"false\">
              <id>1</id>
              <technicalName>psEnter value(s) for Start Date of Application Received Date</technicalName>
              <name>Enter value(s) for Start Date of Application Received Date</name>
               <answer type=\"DateTime\" constrained=\"false\">\
                    <info cardinality=\"Single\"/>
               </answer>
         </parameter>
         <parameter dpId=\"DP0\" type=\"prompt\" optional=\"false\">
                <id>2</id>
                <technicalName>psEnter value for End Date of Application Received Date</technicalName>
                <name>Enter value for End Date of Application Received Date</name>\
                <answer type=\"DateTime\" constrained=\"false\">
                    <info cardinality=\"Single\"/>
                </answer>
          </parameter>
    </parameters>
    4) Here is where I am having problems. I have tried all kinds of permutations of the below payload/response body. All I ever get from the API is a 400 - BadResponse error.
    <parameters>
         <parameter>
              <id>0</id>
              <answer>
                   <values>
                        <value id=\"CTX_9\"/>
                   </values>
              </answer>
         </parameter>
    </parameters>
    <parameters>
         <parameter type=\"prompt\">
              <id > 1 </ id>
              <answer type=\"DateTime\">
                   <values>
                        <value>2012-06-11T09:50:54.000-04:00</value>
                   </values>
               </answer>
         </parameter>
         <parameter type=\"prompt\">
               <id > 2 </ id>
               <answer type=\"DateTime\">
                    <values>
                         <value>2014-07-11T09:50:54.967-04:00</value>
                    </values>
               </answer>
         </parameter>
    </parameters>
    I am not very good with XML and the terminology around it, and I haven't received much training around using the Restful API other than the SDK documentation. I have a feeling there is something very basic that Im missing here. What is the correct XML needed in the response body to properly refresh the document?

    If you are more confortable with JSON, Raylight supports it as well.

  • How can I add links to open xml and csv files stored in another location? Please advice how to place links in my frame maker document?

    Hi,
    I would like to know as to how can I add links to open xml and csv files stored in another location? Please advice how to place links in my frame maker document?
    Kindly advice.
    Thanks
    Priya

    Special > Hypertext > Command "open document" will do its best to open the target document inside FrameMaker, which may not be much help; Special > Hypertext > Command "message …" will use the application you specify. The user guide for 7.0 says this about absolute links, and I don't think anything has changed since:
    For example, to start PaintBrush and open the Ship.pcx file on drive C you would use the command message system pbrush.exe C:/Ship.pcx
    I've not often used a relative link, and not recently: the same source says
    folder levels are separated by a slash / even in Windows and Mac
    [relative links] FrameMaker searches for a relative pathname beginning in the folder that contains the current document
    [absolute links] FrameMaker searches for an absolute pathname beginning at the top of the file system. In Windows, the absolute pathname begins with the drive specifier, a colon and a slash.

  • Database updation using XML and stored Procedure?

    Hello,
    I want to perform updation in multiple tables using XML files.Please suggest can I do updation using xml and stored procedure.
    If yes then which is more efficient and takes less time.
    1.Updation using xml files only
    2.Updation using xml files with stored procedure.
    3.Stored procedure alone.
    If direct xml and stored procedure communication is possible.then please write how.
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Here's a sample. The next code drop of the XSQL Servlet will make the easy-to-do from within XSQL Pages:
    package package1;
    import org.w3c.dom.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
    import oracle.xml.sql.query.OracleXMLQuery;

  • Generating XML from database

    I'm a total newbie in XML DB and need advice on generating XML from database.
    The situation is the following: there is a legacy web application which uses an XML document as a configuration file. This document conforms to some well-defined schema. For instance:
    <config>
         <title value="TITLE" />
         <subtitle value="SUBTITLE" />
         <style url="default.css" />
         <widgets>
              <widget id="1" opened="true" />
              <widget id="2" opened="false" />
         </widgets>
    </config>
    It contains portions of static data which are common for all users as well as dynamic personal data.
    Dynamic data comes from two sources:
    1) security considerations (for instance, not all widgets are available for some users) - thus the "master" configuration content must be filtered, but not otherwise modified;
    2) user preferences (for instance, user can set widget2 to be opened by default) - thus values of some attributes must be different for each user. When the user saves her preferences, the entire document with new values is posted back to server.
    We want to try to store user preferences, apply security and generate personalized configuration documents using XML DB.
    So we need advice on storage models and generation procedures - which should be more efficient and easy to support or extend.
    Please note, that there is no requirement to actually store data as XML.
    Thanks in advance!
    P.S.: Sorry for the incomplete initial post.

  • Search for a tag in xml and modify the content

    Hi,
    I am quite new to using xml db and i want to know how to search a xml, modify a tag value inside xml and replace the content in xml.
    Please help me to find a solution for this.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    First important thing : give your database version (SELECT * FROM v$version).
    Please also provide some sample data :
    - a typical XML document you're working with (or abridged version)
    - explain what change(s) you want to do, or give expected output
    - if you're using a table to store the XML (which is preferred), give the DDL

  • Xml or database

    Hello,
    I'm writing a program that stores pictures (architectural) and emails, letters,... belonging to certain projects. Is it usefull to store the information (place of the file, content of email,...) in xml pages or should i only use a database?
    Thanks Bert

    The natue of your data mentioned seems to be document centric and not data centric. That means that these data are more hierarchic and semi-structured and not rigid or structured. With this, it is better to use XML to store them. If you are going to make use of searching , you can use XSLT for this. One more thing about XML vs. databases : you can go to Ron Bourret's site for his explanations, visit http://www.rpbourret.com. Hope this helps

  • ADF security and database

    Hi all,
    I am implementing ADF security on my application and I came across the following Documents:

    2-http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/1013/oc4jjaas/oc4j_jaas_login_module.htm
    and I have a few of questions :
    1- in ADF security, the edit authorization options in the PageDef reads the roles (gorups) stored on the system-jazn-data.xml file. If my roles are stored on the Database how can I read them?
    2- In the first document it is said " If the role name in web.xml matches a group name in system-jazn-data.xml, no further mapping is required. If the names do not match, then the web.xml role name needs to be mapped to the name in the system-jazn-data.xml using the orion-application.xml file. ". Can I do the mapping between the system-jazn-data.xml and the Database?
    3-When I assign ADF security permissions on PageDefs, It will be stored in the app-jazn-data.xml file. Can I store/read those permissions from the Database and no the app-jazn-data.xml file or at least can I do some kind of mapping between the Database and this file?

    Hi albertpi,
    Thanks for you response. This is our first ADF application.
    We are planning to impliment the security as mentioned above.
    We can configure the LDAP users in Weblogic server.
    We have a page with multiple tables which need to be shown based on the User roles.
    These roles we are planning to define in the table.
    1. I need to show list of users from my LDAP Users on the ADF UI to assign the roles.
    2. We will be defining our list of roles in a database table, which not sure whether they need to map to ADF application security roles.
    Data in table will be something like this.
    User Role
    Admin Tab1
    Admin Tab2
    Admin Tab3
    User1 Tab1
    User2 Tab2
    User2 Tab3
    Once the User is logged in we will read this table to show/hide the respective tabs.
    Can you tell us are we in right path, if yes How to achieve this.
    Thanks,

  • How to store XML and search within tags

    My question
    ===========
    exactly what steps do you need follow to take an XML doc, store
    it, and query based on a tag value.
    The 8i Intermedia text option Reference refers to
    XLM_SECTION_GROUP feature. However, no examples are given. There
    is no user guide.
    I searched Oracle's website and found one reference to
    XML_SECTION_GROUP. The example given is a single row insert into
    a CLOB column with a single pair of tags.
    This whitepaper gives an example of an XML doc, and a query on
    it:
    XML Support in Oracle8i and Beyond
    November 9, 1998
    It doesn't list the steps in between storing the doc and quering
    it. This is crucial to the whole thing: does XML_SECTION_GROUP
    allow all nested tags below the top level to be sectioned and
    indexed implicitly? Or do you need to tell Oracle about all the
    tags you are interested in, in which case what value is added by
    the XLM_SECTION_GROUP?
    Does Oracle have some better examples on this?
    Below is text cut and pasted from the whitepaper.
    -----------x---------
    Figure 5: InsuranceClaim Mixes Structured Data and Text
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <InsuranceClaim>
    <ClaimID>12345</ClaimID>
    <LossCategory>7</LossCategory>
    <Settlements>
    <Payment>
    <Payee>Borden Real Estate</Payee>
    <Date>12-OCT-1998</Date>
    <Amount>200000</Amount>
    <Approver>JCOX</Approver>
    </Payment>
    </Settlements>
    <DamageReport>
    A massive <Cause>Fire</Cause> ravaged the building
    and
    <Casualties>12</Casualties> people were killed.
    Early
    FBI reports indicate that <Motive>arson</Motive> is
    suspected.
    </DamageReport>
    </InsuranceClaim>
    Once instances of iFS file types (including XML-based ones) are
    stored in the database, their
    content can be searched using standard SQL queries, and these
    files can be organized, browsed,
    and versioned using familiar tools like the Windows Explorer.
    So an insurance agent sees a
    directory of InsuranceClaim files sheFs recently worked on in
    the field, while an
    InsuranceClaim-processing application developer can work with
    the information in the
    InsuranceClaim in any way he needs to.
    XML-Enabled "Section Searches" in ConText
    Any XML documents or document fragments saved into "text blobs"
    in the database can be
    enabled for indexing by Oracle8i InterMediaFs ConText
    text-search engine. ConText has been
    enhanced for Oracle8i to allow developers to pinpoint their
    searches to a particular section of a
    document, where sections are implicitly defined by the XML tags
    in the document (fragment).
    Since ConText is seamlessly integrated into the database and
    the SQL language, developers can
    use SQL to perform queries that involve both structured data
    and indexed document fragments.
    For example, Figure 6 shows the SQL statement you would write
    to search one million
    Insurance Claims in your database to answer the question, "How
    much money has Jim Cox
    approved to date in settlement payments for arson-related fire
    claims? "

    Claim_Settlements cs,
    Claim_Settlement_Payments csp
    WHERE csp.Approver = 'JCOX'
    AND CONTAINS (DamageReport, 'Arson WITHIN Motive') >
    0

    : it. This is crucial to the whole thing: does XML_SECTION_GROUP
    : allow all nested tags below the top level to be sectioned and
    : indexed implicitly? Or do you need to tell Oracle about all
    the
    : tags you are interested in, in which case what value is added
    by
    : the XLM_SECTION_GROUP?
    : Does Oracle have some better examples on this?
    : Below is text cut and pasted from the whitepaper.
    : -----------x---------
    : Figure 5: InsuranceClaim Mixes Structured Data and Text
    : <?xml version="1.0"?>
    : <InsuranceClaim>
    : <ClaimID>12345</ClaimID>
    : <LossCategory>7</LossCategory>
    : <Settlements>
    : <Payment>
    : <Payee>Borden Real Estate</Payee>
    : <Date>12-OCT-1998</Date>
    : <Amount>200000</Amount>
    : <Approver>JCOX</Approver>
    : </Payment>
    : </Settlements>
    : <DamageReport>

    : </InsuranceClaim>
    : Once instances of iFS file types (including XML-based ones)
    are
    : stored in the database, their
    : content can be searched using standard SQL queries, and
    these
    : files can be organized, browsed,
    : and versioned using familiar tools like the Windows
    Explorer.
    : So an insurance agent sees a
    : directory of InsuranceClaim files sheFs recently worked on
    in
    : the field, while an
    : InsuranceClaim-processing application developer can work
    with
    : the information in the
    : InsuranceClaim in any way he needs to.
    : XML-Enabled "Section Searches" in ConText
    : Any XML documents or document fragments saved into "text
    blobs"
    : in the database can be
    : enabled for indexing by Oracle8i InterMediaFs ConText
    : text-search engine. ConText has been
    : enhanced for Oracle8i to allow developers to pinpoint their
    : searches to a particular section of a
    : document, where sections are implicitly defined by the XML
    tags
    : in the document (fragment).
    : Since ConText is seamlessly integrated into the database and
    : the SQL language, developers can
    : use SQL to perform queries that involve both structured data
    : and indexed document fragments.
    : For example, Figure 6 shows the SQL statement you would
    write
    : to search one million
    : Insurance Claims in your database to answer the
    question, "How
    : much money has Jim Cox
    : approved to date in settlement payments for arson-related
    fire
    : claims? "
    : Figure 6: Searching on a Column & Text in XML
    : Sections
    : SELECT SUM(Amount)
    : FROM Claim_Header ch,
    : Claim_Settlements cs,
    : Claim_Settlement_Payments csp
    : WHERE csp.Approver = 'JCOX'
    : AND CONTAINS (DamageReport, 'Arson WITHIN Motive') >
    : 0
    : AND CONTAINS (DamageReport, 'Fire WITHIN Cause' ) >
    : 0
    : AND . . . /* Join Clauses */
    Currently you cannot break apart an arbitrary XML doc and store
    it into the database without using XSLT to create DDL to insert
    it. You can create a schema and have XML be read and written to
    it. Check out the XML SQL Utility available here for download.
    As for the section searching, in 8.1.5 you can only get section
    searching not hierarchical searches. interMedia in this version
    doesn't understand the XML structure. This will come in 8.1.6.

  • Content Search and not the document in SharePoint 2010

    Hi,
    The requirement is : Search the content of documents by storing the data in a database-driven structure and get the search results in a grid view with data in different columns. My questions are :-
    1) Can we store complete content of the word document in a separate database (other than content DB of site collection) or in list/library and show in search results/SP search result page ?
    2) Can we convert the existing documents in XML format and save it SharePoint ? Will that content be visible in Search results  ?
    3) How can we modify search page to have check box before every search result ?
    4) How can we export the selected search results in an excel file ?
    Any help will be highly appreciated !!!

    Hi Inderjeet,
    Thanks for the reply. But the client's existing documents are in .doc (Word 2003) format , which is not an open-xml supported format. So the first step would be -
    Q1) How can we extract the content from word documents ?
    The existing documents are based on a standard corporate template (.dot). These documents are having very heavy content , for example, resume document of an employee, having 20 experiences in very big paragraphs in text format.
    Q2) Can we store such large content (experience/qualifications/professional licenses etc) in SharePoint list/library columns ? If yes , which column type will be used...
    Its true that we can convert the existing documents in XML and then the content will be searchable in SharePoint 2010.
    Q3) Can we customize the search page to that level that it can give us results in a grid view having different columns , and user can select the multiple search results and create a document dynamically based on those selected search results.
    I Know anything can be done using customization's (.net C#)..I just want to clarify for SharePoint search page. If yes , then there will be no need to store the document contents in a separate SQL database.
    Kindly reply.
