XML in Applets

Hi all,
Sorry for such a basic question but I've already searched and searched and somehow can't find a concise answer so please help.
I need to do some simple XML parsing in an Unsigned Applet. Where do I get parser.jar or any other jar which is limited to SAXParser requirements and will permit creation of a SAXParserFactory...I guess using:
new SaxParserFactoryImpl(), (which doesn't seem to be described in the j2ee docs).
I've seen numerous references to parser.jar but can't find out where to download it and what it contains.
I've also thought about chopping out what I need from j2ee.jar but it seems there must be a better way.
Please help,
Brad

Thanks, I already found what I need and got hip to crimson and all.
What I wound up using is TinyParser by Tom Gibara.
It's only about 17K...but is of course somewhat limited and is non-validating.
Never the less, it does everything I need a the moment.
Thanks again,
Brad

  • Can't parse xml from applet using dom on linux on Netscape 7 using jre 1.4.

    Hi,
    I can't seem to parse xml from an applet on linux on Netscape 7 using the JRE 1.4.
    My code looks like the following:
    StringBufferInputStream is = new StringBufferInputStream("<foo></foo>");
    DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder builder = null;
    try
      builder = factory.newDocumentBuilder();
      domDocument = builder.parse(is); // this line creates an exception
    catch (Exception e)
      System.out.println(e);
    This code works fine from an applet on windows. On linux, the error message is:
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.util.PropertyPermission entityExpansionLimit read)
    I've tried both JRE 1.4.0_04 and 1.4.1_03
    Thanks!
    Q

    There's another posting about this same problem (platform unspecified), but the same error message. I was also having this problem (Windows 1.4.03) and swithced back to 1.4.01 and the problem went away. In the future, I may sign my applets to get a more generous security policy. But, I'm sure it'll be a lot of work (vs. a line of code somewhere).

  • Read XML from applet

    Hi there,
    I would like to read XML data from Applet,
    first of all is it possible?
    If yes then how and will I require any extra pugin other than Java Plug-in?
    Thanks

    Sure you can, as long as the applet has permissions to read the xml file. If it is in the same directory as the applet it should be ok.
    There is no need for an extra plugin. Here's a starting point:
    import javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory;
    import org.w3c.dom.Document;
    import org.w3c.dom.Element;
    import org.w3c.dom.NodeList;
    Document doc = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance().newDocumentBuilder().parse(<some stream>);
    Element data = doc.getDocumentElement();
    NodeList dbChildren = db.getChildNodes();

  • Cannot parse xml from applet

    I really hope that somebody can help me with this.....
    I'm trying to simply parse an xml document into an applet so that the info can be used later on. I just need the tag, attribute and value.
    So far, all that I can do is get the "access denied" java.util.propertypermission user.dir read error that I see tons of people complaining about. here's my code:
    public StageInfo getNextStage() throws Exception
            handler = new GameXMLHandler(m_imageGiver, m_codeBase);
            spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
            parser = spf.newSAXParser();
            parser.parse("Loader.xml", handler);
            return handler.getStageInfo();
        }is there a way to parse an xml file in an applet? everywhere I look, somebody is saying that it can be done, but never have they done it. I'm starting to think that there is something beyond my control that is stopping this from working. Please help!!!!

    If I read your post correctly, your applet is trying to read xml file from the user's local drive? This must be done with a signed (trusted) applet. Otherwise normal run-of-the-mill applets can't access drives. Java security feature. You can use Frame, it can access local drives.

  • Xml and applets

    I'm trying to use Sax in an applet to read an xml file. My application works fine, but when I convert it to an applet, I get errors.
    Does anybody know where I can get info and examples using Xml, Sax, and Applets? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

    Probably nothing to do with XML. You use it in an applet precisely as you would use it in an application. You are probably running into one of the usual applet problems. Of course, this is all guesswork without any idea of what errors you are actually having.

  • Need xml to xml mapper applet

    Hi All,
    Here is the requirement. The users will load xml document1 on left hand side text area and document2 on right hand side text area. Then they should be able to map the fields from document1 to fields of document2 by doing drag and drop lines. Also this mapping needs to be persisted so that if they open the map later on,it will display the graphical view of the mapping which was already done.
    Is there any applet that can fulfil this requirement? Other suggestions are welcomed.
    Thanks

    Only solution is to code and create a version of your own.

  • Something about applet and database?

    applet cant write and read from outer files.
    but can it read from database?if i don't modify my security policies.

    zhangv,
    We hava a web application with an applet in it that communicates with the server over HTTP. So, you need not worry about security. We use a multi-tiered environment. That is, the middle layer uses an application server (Sybase EAServer) and the backend layer is our database (Sybase ASE 12.5). Our application server fetches the data from the database and streams XML to the applet via a servlet. You can find a wonderful example for how this works in an article on Java world, entitled:
    Title: "A J2EE presentation pattern: Applets with servlets and XML"
    Subtitle: "Enhance your Web interfaces with powerful XML-configured applet components"
    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-05-2002/jw-0524-j2ee.html
    Hope this helps

  • XML Parsing Error in applet

    I'm trying to parse a XML dicument in an applet with the following code
    String url = "myfile.xml";
    org.w3c.dom.Document doc = null;
    try
    doc = db.parse(url);
    catch (SAXException se)
    System.out.println("SAX error");
    and get the SAXException when the XML document contains a
    non-ASCII, but ISO-8859-1 character (i.e. '' = 0xE4)
    Running the same code as Java application on the same computer,
    where I also run the applet, works fine (no exception occurs).
    IMHO, there should not be any difference, both applet and application
    should use the same VM and, hence, the same XML parser.
    Any idea why not?
    I have the Sun VM coming with JRE1.4.0 installed on a PC with
    windows 2000, and also got the same result with JRE1.4.2.
    I checked whether the server application sends the correct xml document
    by printing it to System.out (=java console of the browser, where the applet
    runs, and this seems to be OK. So, my java application seems to be OK.
    Is there any possibility that some settings in the browser cause this problem?
    The longer I think about it, the more I'm confused.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    the error was set I didn't set the contentLength in the http header when sending the xml file from the servlet.
    I don't really understand why this caused the type of error I experienced, but, at least, my applet works fine now.

  • Finding and retrieving an XML file from an application and an applet

    I have a problem.
    I have data stored in an XML file. I want to be able to call that file and store it into a document object from an application standing alone on a computer as weel as from an applet that would be running over the web.
    I don't know how to do this.
    When I use a relative path name for the application it attaches the path of the folder that contains java.exe. I could do something with the class path but this wouldn't help the end user of the application on a different computer. For similar reasons I don't want to hard code because I don't know where the final applet will be stored.
    I have a table that holds, sorts and filters the data so I want the table to collect the data, I don't want to dictate the path from the applet or the application, I want a method that is consistant with both scenarios.
    Can anyone offer some advice?

    I've just finished trying it out, here is what I did:
    String xmlDocName="filename.xml";
    java.net.URL fileURL=this.getClass().getResource(xmlDocName);
    private final String fileName = fileURL.toString().substring(6);
    The substring removes the "file:/" from the URL.
    This works fine in the IDE, I have even stored the xml file in a lower folder e.g. package_folder/xml_folder/filename.xml and replaced the xmlDocName with "xml_folder/filename.xml" and it worked fine.
    I haven't tried it in an applet because I'm running IE and as you are well aware there are problems with swing and IE applets. But you answer deserves the Duke Dollars, thank you very much.

  • Keeping contact with controlling applet while u/l XML file via servlet

    Hello everybody,
    if I am thinking too complicated, please send me other suggestions. Here's the situation:
    I already have a working applet for a metadata application, that is sending the contents of the client's textfields to a remote database via servlet communication. Now I want to implement the following:
    -The users have some attribute data in form of an XML file
    -I want them to upload this file to the server (I already have that functionality using the fileUpload libraries of Apache Commons) by calling the servlet from a pop-up html page (is there any other possibility to do the communication, i.e. getting files from the file system?)
    -the XML file should be parsed on the server and the content should be sent back to the calling applet for previewing reasons.
    -when the user gives his/her O.K. the data should be transferred to the database.
    Now there are some obstacles to overcome: When I upload the XML file to the server, I loose "contact" with the applet, i.e. the file is not connected with the applet code in any way. This is not a problem, when there is only one user at the time, but with many users loading up their data at the same time, things could get tricky.
    What I thought was to copy the XML file to a temp directory with a unique name, the name of which would be transferred back to the applet by another servlet that is called when the (upload)pop-up window closes. The name of the temp directory could be the ID of the applet thread (is there such an ID, if yes, how can it be retrieved?)
    Any suggestions (or just shaking heads concerning my complicated construction ;-) )
    Cheers and many thanks in advance
    Jan

    You may be able to read a file from the file system with the applet, but it may require you to sign the applet. If you can, then use an HttpURLConnection to the servlet and send the file that way.
    On the server side, you could create a session object (wether you actually need a session or not), and use the session's id as the key id for the directory name for the uploaded file. Session IDs are unique per client, and if the client handles cookies, then the same session will be used from one request to the next.
      session = request.getSession();
      String sessionID = session.getId();The response from the servlet would be a link to the server-side file. If you are using the Applet to send the request, you could get the response and automatically view the new file. Otherwise, you could send a page to the popup window saying: "Click This Link To See Your File" type of thing.

  • XML : Transform DOM Tree to XML String in an applet since the JRE 1.4.2_05

    Hello,
    I build a DOM tree in my applet.
    Then I transform it to XML String.
    But since the JRE 1.4.2_05 it doesn't work.
    These lines failed because these variables became final:
    org.apache.xalan.serialize.CharInfo.XML_ENTITIES_RESOURCE = getClass().getResource("XMLEntities.res").toString();
    org.apache.xalan.processor.TransformerFactoryImpl.XSLT_PROPERTIES = getClass().getResource("XSLTInfo.properties").toString();The rest of the code :
    DocumentBuilderFactory domFactory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder builder = domFactory.newDocumentBuilder();
    Document domXML = builder.newDocument();
    // I build my DOM Tree
    StringWriter xmlResult = new StringWriter();
    Source source = new DOMSource(domXML);
    Result result = new StreamResult(xmlResult);
    Transformer xformer = TransformerFactory.newInstance().newTransformer();
    xformer.setOutputProperty(javax.xml.transform.OutputKeys.INDENT,"yes");
    xformer.transform(source,result);Is there any other way to get an XML String from a DOM tree in an applet ?
    I'm so disappointed to note this big problem.

    Does anyone have an idea why I get this error message when try to use transform in an applet?

  • How to parse XML in an applet

    Hi all,
    I am using a webrowset that gets an xml file form the server. The webrowset object has to parse this file. I have serveral questions about this and how the web browser will use an xml parser in general.
    1) I need to set a whole bunch of permission just to use the parser (read/write permissions) Why do I need to do this as I am not trying to access the local resources in any way.
    2) I get the following error in ie6.
    ReadXml : com.sun.parser.Resolver error
    In the debugger, using appletviewer, I get "no value set for parser property"
    I assume that the browser is having problems locating and using the parser but cannot figure out how to solve this. I am using the java plugin so I have access to the latest version on the jvm.
    Any help appreciated!
    Tia
    Mark

    Specify the jar file containing the parser in the archive attribute
    of the applet tag.
    <applet
    archive = "xerces.jar"
    >
    </applet>
