XML serializing/deserializing versus parsing

Hi all,
This is not a strictly java question but after reading many discussions and creative solutions offered by different members of this forum, i feel that the right audience for my question are the folks in this very forum. Moderator, if you feel this question makes sense in a different forum, where it might get better responses feel free to move it.
We are starting off on a new b2b web services project. Everyone in the group agreed that in order to appropriately serve the consumers in our space the best format to use is XML. We are java based and our first consumer is also java based, but we see in the future that our services will be consumed by other types of consumers as well. There seems to be a deep divide in how the xml structure should look like. There are two schools of thoughts. The first one (which is the popular one) is to have loosely typed tag names. Something like this
<header>
<map>
<entry>
<string>CUSTOMERNAME</string>
<string>Mahesh</string>
</entry>
</map>
</header>
The idea being, we could dump regular marshalling/unmarshalling/parsing techniques in favor of a serializing/deserializing tool (Like XStream). The argument here is that we don't worry about a schema/parsing etc and always deal with some sort of generic collection. The other argument is that parsing is more heavier (in terms of performance) than serializing/deserializing.
I believe that (i belong to the other less popular school of thought) any xml structure should have a real structure (strongly typed tag names). The problems i have with the proposed structure are
1. They are not self describing, i.e. no wsdl
2. They cant be parsed with a SAX parser (since there are no tag names, i dont think they can be parsed with a SAX parser, but if anyone here disagrees please correct me)
3. Since regular parsing is out of the question, you cant predict how your consumers are using it.
4. I think that the only place to use a serializing/deserializing technique is when you control both end points (producer and consumer).
What i wanted to find out from the audience here is what they think of the pros/cons of the XML structure described above. Specifically in terms of
1. Usablity
2. Scalability
3. Performance
The generic structure is also being pitched as the 'next gen' way of defining and using XML. Is that true? Maybe i am just getting old and need to catch up.
Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

What? Of course you can parse that "unstructured XML" with a SAX parser, why shouldn't you be able to do that? It's still XML after all.
>
You are right, it can be parsed. What i meant to say was i wont be able to extract information from it easily. For e.g. if i have to read the customer name what tag event will i look for? If i look for the event that fires off when i encounter tag name 'string' that will only give me the tag name and not the value. I have to come up with some sort of counter mechanism to disregard the first tag event and look at the second event. Is my assumption correct?Well, parsing the "freeform" XML with SAX requires a few tricks but can result in code that does pretty much the same thing.
Since the information is exactly the same in both (except that one is a bit more verbose), I don't see any major differences in how it can be parsed.
The only (seeming) difference is that for "strictly defined" XML you'll need to pre-define which tags/properties exist. But even that can be avoided by clever use of xs:any and allowing other namespaces (i.e. allow a mydata:favoriteColor tag inside your myStrictSchema:person tag).
Once you do those, the two formats become even more equivalent: some of the advantages of having strictly-formed XML are lost (because you have to handle "unknown" tags again), while some of the disadvantages are lost as well (yeah! extensibility without modifying the core standard).
In my (partially humble) opinion, the "free form XML" approach is often used when people are too lazy to investigate the wide variety of tools available via official XML techniques.
>
3. Since regular parsing is out of the question, you cant predict how your consumers are using it.
>
What i meant here was, if my consumers find regular parsing techniques difficult to parse they will resort to short cuts to extract the information (like regex to pull information) and that will make it difficult to predict how consumers are using the xml and hence make it difficult to plan for changes in the future. Am i over thinking here?That's always a possible problem and won't be avoided by any choice in data format. They will try it with "strict XML" and they will try it with "freeform XML". If you have some kind of consulting function, then you can try to communicate the dangers of this approach, but in the end you can hardly force people to "do it the right way".
Which one would you use?I'd prefer the strictly specified one usually. But I don't know enough about the problem domain to give a qualified answer.

    Hi CarlSun,
    Thanks for the reply. I have made the changes suggested by you.
    I have few queries:
    1.  Can we use attribute "source" in the description tag?
         I have created a local html page and specified it in source attribute. but the Extension Manager CS6 did not render the local html page and displayed      the following:
         No description avaliable. Click the following link for more details.
         "http://www.abcd.html". Is it possible to display a local html page in Extension Manager CS6?
    2. Can I display an image (png) in CDATA under description tag? If yes, then can you please guide me how can I do so?
    3. As suggested in tech notes MXI file must include UTF-8 encoding as header (<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>). The MXI I am using does      not have this header. Do I need to include the header?
    Thanks

  • How to Create XML file with SAX parser instead of DOM parser

    HI ALL,
    I am in need of creating an XML file by SAX parser ONLY. As far as my knowledge goes, we can use DOM for such purpose(by using createElement, creatAttribute ...). Can anyone tell me, is there any way to create an XML file using SAX Parser only. I mean, I just want to know whether SAX provides any sort of api for Creatign an element, attribute etc. I know that SAX is for event based parsing. But my requirement is to create an XML file from using only SAX parser.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi,
    You must write a XMLWriter class yourself, and that Class extends DefaultHandle ....., the overwrite the startElement(url, localName, qName, attributeList), startDocument(), endElement().....and so on.
    in startElement write your own logic about how to create a new element and how to create a Attribute list
    in startDocument write your own logic about how to build a document and encodeType, dtd....
    By using:
    XMLWriter out = new XMLWriter()
    out.startDocument();
    Attribute attr1 = new Atribute();
    attr1.add("name", "value");
    out.startElement("","","Element1", attr1);
    Attribute attr2 = new Atribute();
    attr2.add("name", "value");
    out.startElement("","","Element2", attr2);
    out.endElement("","","Element2");
    out.endElement("","","Element1");
    out.endDocument();

  • Updating XML file using DOM parser

    Hi,
    Can someone help me, how to update following XML file using DOM parser.
    The following is my XML file.

              <id>1</id>
              <name>abc</name>
         </student>

              <name>ijk</name>
         </student>
         <student>
              <id>5</id>
              <name></name>
         </student>
    </students>Consider, I will input 2 fields, ie., id & name. For the matching Id, the name has to be updated.
    Though, I have achieved this, but I am unable to update the value for 3rd record, & 5th record ie., id=3 & id=5. Since, these are blank.
    Thanks.

    Some <name> elements have a child node which is a text node. From what you say it appears you know how to change those text nodes.
    The other <name> elements don't have any child nodes. But you want one. This suggests to me that you need code that creates a text node and adds it to the <name> element as its child.

  • How to validate XML against XSD and parse/save in one step using SAXParser?

    How to validate XML against XSD and parse/save in one step using SAXParser?
    I currently have an XML file and XSD. The XML file specifies the location of the XSD. In Java code I create a SAXParser with parameters indicating that it needs to validate the XML. However, SAXParser.parse does not validate the XML, but it does call my handler functions which save the elements/attributes in memory as it is read. On the other hand, XMLReader.parse does validate the XML against the XSD, but does not save the document in memory.
    My code can call XMLReader.parse to validate the XML followed by SAXParser.parse to save the XML document in memory. But this sound inefficient. Besides, while a valid document is being parsed by XMLReader, it can be changed to be invalid and saved, and XMLReader.parse would be looking at the original file and would think that the file is OK, and then SAXParser.parse would parse the document without errors.

  • XML SAX error in parsing

    Hi,
    I have a large XML file(100KB) and I am using SAX parser for parsing it.
    The part of the code is shown here
    public void characters(char[] ch, int start, int end)
    throws SAXException {
    String s = new String(ch, start, end);
    // System.out.println("characters: " + s);
    if(s == null || s.trim().length() == 0 || s.equals("\n")) {
                   return;
    setValueInObject(s);
    where I assumes that the "s" will be the "value" in my xml for example
    <tag>value<tag>
    This is working fine , in most of the cases. But if the "value" is too large sometimes it gives me part of the value (eg. valu) only. And if i re-try then i may work.
    Please advice me in this regards.
    thanks
    Rajesh

    Just use characters() method for building string. Use endElement() to process that string.

    <CODE>9</CODE>
    <VALUE>OK</VALUE>
    </TRANSLATION>
    </LANGUAGE_TRANS>

    because what you want is not the node value of CODE but the node value of the text nodes into it!
    assuming only one text node into it, try this:
    System.out.println("lTrans1.item(0).getNodeName : " + lTrans1.item(0).getFirstChild().getNodeValue());

    parser......the parse function in dom parser takes
    only input stream as argument.......This is not true of the DOM parser in Java 1.4. So you might want to get rid of your old parser and replace it by something more current. Or perhaps you are using 1.4 and you just didn't read all of the API docs.
