XML to Oracle for Newby

Hi,
im a newby in Oracle related Stuff and want to read in several XML files into a table.
In the Documentation ive found this:
Working with XML
Getting data into an XMLType table and column. As you may expect, there are many options available to us to get XML data into the database. Data can be inserted with SQL, PL/SQL, Java, and C programs. We can also load data into the database using the SQL*Loader and Import/Export functions of XMLType tables. XML data can also be moved with Oracle Streams and can also use DBMS_XDB functions. Let’s explore one useful and simple way to load XML data.
In this example, an XML document will be loaded from a file into a table using a SQL insert to load the XML document from a bfile. This file needs to be accessed through a database directory. To begin this, we’ll create a directory pointing to a file where the XML document file is stored. Note that to perform the examples in this article, you must ensure that role xdbadmin has been granted to the user you are working with.
create or replace directory xmldir as '/u01/app/oracle/admin/db01/sql';
Now we can create tables that can contain XMLType data in two ways. The first will be a table with a column of XMLType. The second will be a table defined as type XMLType.
1. Create a table with an XML column.
create table invoiceXML_col (
inv_id number primary key,
inv_doc XMLType);
2. Create an XML table.
create table invoiceXML_tbl of XMLtype;
Each of the above statements implicitly creates two indexes in each table—one for the primary key and one for the LOB.
Now we will insert an invoice document into both tables. Note that we are using character set AL32UTF8 and will specify this to pass the character set encoding to be used for the file being read. Data will be inserted into both tables to show the similarity between the SQL statements.
But i dont really understand what is happening here.
Can someone here please explain me stepby step how to read in one XML file (with PL/SQL or Java) and put it into a table.
Thx

The simple stuff. A XML doc can be stored in its native format (plain text file) in Oracle as a CLOB. It an be stored as a parsed XML DOM (Document Object Model) as XMLTYPE.
Loading a XML file can be done using SQL*Loader - where the data file that you load contains the name of the XML file. Example of the control file for the loader:
LOAD DATA
INFILE 'mydatafile.csv'
INTO TABLE my_xml_table
FIELDS TERMINATED BY ','
filename CHAR(200),
xmlfile_content LOBFILE(filename) TERMINATED BY EOF
)And the CSV file will contain a single value per line, where the value is the (path and) name of the XML file to load. This method is typically used from client platforms to load data into the Oracle server.
Or when the file is on the Oracle Server itself, you can use DBMS_LOB to load it. Example:
create or replace procedure LoadDocument( dirName varchar2, fileName varchar2 ) is
filehandle BFILE;
buffer CLOB;
warning varchar2(4000);
srcOffset integer := 1;
dstOffset integer := 1;
langContext integer := 0;
charSetID integer := 0;
procedure CleanupLoadDoc is
begin
-- discard the temporary CLOB
DBMS_LOB.FreeTemporary( buffer );
-- close open file
if DBMS_LOB.IsOpen( filehandle ) = 1 then
DBMS_LOB.FileClose( filehandle );
end if;
end;
begin
-- assign the filehandle
filehandle := BFilename( dirName, cFileName );
-- create a temporary CLOB
DBMS_LOB.CreateTemporary( buffer, FALSE );
-- read the contents of the file into a CLOB
DBMS_LOB.FileOpen( filehandle, DBMS_LOB.FILE_READONLY );
DBMS_LOB.LoadCLOBFromFile(
buffer, filehandle, DBMS_LOB.LOBMAXSIZE,
dstOffset, srcOffset, charSetID, langContext,
warning
-- save the contents
insert
into docs
values(
dirName,
fileName,
warning,
buffer
commit;
-- cleanup
CleanupLoadDoc;
exception when OTHERS then
-- as we cannot create resource protection blocks in PL/SQL,
-- we need to make sure we cleanup for both normal termination
-- and exceptions
CleanupLoadDoc;
raise;
end;
Once loaded a CLOB, the raw XML can be parsed using the XMTYPE function.
Oracle also has a component called XDB. This allows XSD's to be loaded, tables to be auto generated for the complex types in the XSD, loading XMLs into these tables, verifying that a XML complies with a XSD, etc.
But no easy examples at hand for these - suggest you read the Oracle XDB manual from start to end. (All Oracle docs for versions 8i to 11g available via http://tahiti.oracle.com)

  • Generate xml source file for Oracle Order Capture Print Quote

    Hi,
    I am new to xml and need to work on creating templates for Print Quote.
    I am trying to generate the xml source file for which I enabled the report in system administrator and set the output to XML and assigned to Quoting Reports responsiblity. I then assigned XML Report Publisher to the same responsiblity.
    I ran the report (Print Quote) and then I am trying to run the XML Report Publisher but I cannot get the request id in the list of values.
    I am able to generate xml source file for other reports like Printed Purchase Order etc.,
    The view output for the (Print Quote) report is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
    - <!-- Generated by Oracle Reports version 6.0.8.26.0
    -->
    <ASOPQTER />
    How do I get the xml source file? Or are there seeded templates that I can use to create more templates? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ravi

    Hi, I am in the same position - did this issue ever ger resolved by anyone. I have done a few XMLP reports successfully now using the Word add-in, but customising the Quote output differs from other standard reports.
    If you look at the data definition for Quote it is a 'dummy' definition and has no XML file attached. Does anyone know how I can get the XML format for the report output?
    Also the template uses XSL-FO ?!?!?! rather than RTF - not sure how to work with this, the Oracle docs are not very helpful in this regard either.
    Has anyone successfully managed to customise the Quote print report? Many thanks,
    Roger

    My first posting was messed up. This is re-posting the same question.
    Problem for using oracle xml parser v2 for 8.1.7
    I have a sylesheet with
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-xsl">.
    It works fine if I refer this xsl file in xml file as follows:
    <?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="http://...../GN.xsl"?>.
    When I use this xsl in pl/sql package, I got
    ORA-20100: Error occurred while processing: XSL-1009: Attribute 'xsl:version' not found in 'xsl:stylesheet'.
    After I changed name space definition to
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0"> in xsl file, I got
    ORA-20100: Error occurred while processing: XSL-1019: Expected ']' instead of '$'.
    I am using xml parser v2 for 8.1.7
    Can anyone explain why it happens? What is the solution?

    Steve,
    We are also creating an XML DOM from java and are having trouble getting the tags created as we want. When we use XMLText it creates the tag as <tagName/>value rather than <tagName>value</tagName>. We want separate open and close tags. Any ideas?

  • New to XML and Oracle

    Just trying to clarify some issues as I try and learn about XML, and specifically how it integrates into the DB.
    1 - Is there a way with Oracle tools for me to get an XSD of an existing 9i relational schema? We are not currently using the XML DB, but our middleware developers would like to have an up to date XSD to use for their internal mapping.
    2 - Is there any way that I can keep that XSD up-to-date automatically, so I get a new one whenever the schema gets updated?
    3 - If I wanted to investigate storing XML docs within the DB in native XML format, I need to have an XML DB, correct? Is this DB construct maintained seperatelly from my "normal" relational schema? or are they kept in sync by Oracle?
    I know these may all be real basic questions, but as I said, I'm new to XML and Oracle. I am reading as much as I can, but there are a lot of docs out there.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi
    1. On my opinion such a tool doesn't exists. Some parts can be implemented elsewhere, but not as described by you... e.g. with XSU if you specify the parameter "withschema" the XSD of the executed statement is generated. Another example is to use DBMS_METADATA to dump the data dictionary in XML (but not XSD, of course you could write your own XSLT to do this transformation...).
    2. -
    3. If you use XSD-based tables the XSD and the relational model are stored separately in the data dictionary. Therefore if you change the XSD you have to drop/create the XSD-based table... no schema evolution yet.

  • How to store data from xml in oracle database

    Hello All
    Could anyone tell me ways of storing XML in Oracle and whats the best one in terms of performance issues.
    any URL to this q/s would be great.
    thanks

    Ben,
    The following link as some information regarding DOM API and XSQL.
    http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/ask/f?p=4950:8:2923508047773696280::NO::F4950_P8_DISPLAYID,F4950_P8_CRITERIA:17309127931717
    For XML DB, you may want to create an XMLSchema and build a table off the schema definition. Then use WEBDAV to load the xml into a folder (ie object table) Once the xml is in the database you could build a view for a relational look at the data.
    Example from XMLDB Techical White Paper doc.
    create or replace view PURCHASEORDER_MASTER_VIEW
    (reference, requestor, userid, costcenter,...)
    as select extractValue(Value(p),'/PurchaseOrder/Reference'),
    extractValue(value(p),'/PurchaseOrder/Requestor'),
    extractValue(value(p),'/PurchaseOrder/User'),
    extractValue(value(p),'/PurchaseOrder/CostCenter'),...
    from PURCHASEORDER p

  • XML and Oracle 8i Lite

    Hi Wizards
    I'm in an endeavour to do the following things -
    1.Generate XML output from Oracle 8i Lite database
    2.Modify the XML and update the database taking the modified XML.
    My java platform is JDK 1.2. I've used the XML SQL Utility for Java, and in doing so i've been successful with the 1st step. I've used the Oracle 8.1.6SDK JDBC Driver which is compatible with JDK 2.The code fragment is like the following -
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.math.*;
    import oracle.xml.sql.query.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
    public class orasql1
    public static void main(String args[]) throws SQLException
    Connection conn = null;
    String tabName = "emp";
    try {
    Class.forName("oracle.lite.poljdbc.POLJDBCDriver");
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:Polite:POlite", "SYSTEM", "manager");
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Oracle Connection error\t:");
    System.out.println(e);
    System.exit(0);
    OracleXMLQuery qry = new OracleXMLQuery(conn, "select * from " + tabName);
    qry.setRowsetTag("SCHEMADOC_1");
    qry.setRowTag("EMPLOYEE");
    qry.setStyleSheet("emp.xsl");
    String xmlString = qry.getXMLString(true);
    conn.close();
    try {
    File output = new File("emp.xml");
    FileWriter xmlFile = new FileWriter(output);
    xmlFile.write(xmlString,0,xmlString.length());
    xmlFile.close();
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Output file error\t:");
    System.out.println(e);
    System.exit(0);
    I am putting some sample code for step 2 in the following section -
    import oracle.xml.sql.dml.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.*;
    import java.net.*;
    public class orasql2

    String tabName = "emp";
    String fileName = "emp.xml";
    try {
    Class.forName("oracle.lite.poljdbc.POLJDBCDriver");
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:Polite:POlite", "SYSTEM", "manager");
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("An error has occurred.");
    System.out.println("Please check your CLASSPATH variable..");
    System.out.println(e);
    System.exit(0);
    OracleXMLSave save = new OracleXMLSave(conn, tabName);
    URL url = save.createURL(fileName);
    save.setRowTag("SCHEMADOC_1");
    int rowCount = save.insertXML(url);
    System.out.println("Successfully inserted "+rowCount+" rows into "+tabName);
    conn.close();
    Compiling the above code is fine, no errors! But while running the application I get the error -

    It looks like be a classpath issue. Would you check with the class name.

  • XML in Oracle 9i (best method to return a xml file from a table query)

    Hello.
    What is the best method to query a table, or set of tables (that will return thousands of rows) using xml in oracle? (best performance)
    I'm currently using DBMS_XMLGen, is there a better method ?

    I think, if your talking about generating XML, that you should use XMLElement, XMLForest, etc. to create your XML.
    Lets assume that you base is relational data, then maybe the following great example will give you an idea how to do it : Re: Generate XML Schema from oracle tables
    As michaels pointed out (did you read the link/ URL given?), the general expectancy is that the packages will be less and less important. So also maintenance wise the XMLElement, etc way will be the best, also for the future, maintainable method.

  • Problem with running sample code from XML Schema Processor for Java

    Hi there,
    I downloaded the XML Schema Processor for Java and tried it out. Unfortunately, it failed at the first step. FYI, I included all xmlparserv2.jar and xmlschema.jar in my classpath.
    I compiled XSDSample.java with a warning: XSDSample.java uses a deprecated API. Recompile with "-deprecation" for details. There was no problem with compiling XSDSetSchema.java.
    When I tried to run report.xml by typing java XSDSample report.xml, I got Parsing report.xml
    NonParserException: null.
    I guess that report.xml from the sample is not valid.
    Could any one give me a hint? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

  • Generating multi-level xml in oracle

    Hi,
    I want to create a multi-level XML structure from oracle, is there a way?
    Presently oracle provides DBMS_XMLQUERY and XMLGEN package to generated XML structure given a query. But the structure so generated is of single level. That is say I use

    Milton,
    I was able to generate hierarchical XML from Oracle using object views and XML-SQL Utility (XSU).
    Here is a simplified version of my OR schema:
    /* Physical spec object */
    create or replace type physical_specifications_object as object (
    physical_specifications_id number(15),
    page_count number(10),
    product_id number(10),
    four_color_count number(10),
    two_color_count number(10),
    table_count number(10),
    binding_type varchar2(100),
    height varchar2(20),
    width varchar2(20)
    /* Market object */
    create or replace type market_object as object (
    market_id number(15),
    master_class_name varchar2(50),
    market_name varchar2(100),
    market_type varchar2(100),
    market_description varchar2(500),
    level_rank varchar2(15),
    market_code varchar2(100),
    product_id number(10)
    /* List of markets */
    create or replace type market_table as table of market_object;
    /* Market object view */
    create or replace view market_object_view of market_object
    with object identifier (market_id) as
    select mkt.market_id,
    class.master_class_name,
    mkt.market_name,
    mkt.market_type,
    mkt.market_description,
    prod_mkt.level_rank,
    mkt.market_code,
    p.product_id
    from market mkt,
    product p,
    product_market prod_mkt,
    master_class class
    where p.product_id = prod_mkt.product_id
    and prod_mkt.market_id = mkt.market_id
    and mkt.master_class_id = class.master_class_id(+);
    /* Feature object */
    create or replace type product_feature_object as object (
    feature_id number(15),
    feature_text varchar2(3500),
    feature_type varchar2(100)
    /* List of features */
    create or replace type product_feature_table as table of product_feature_object;
    /* Product object */
    create or replace type product_object as object (
    product_id number(10),
    title varchar2(150),
    media_type varchar2(20),
    standard_number varchar2(100),
    physical_specifications physical_specifications_object,
    markets market_table,
    product_features product_feature_table
    /* Product object view */
    create or replace view product_object_view of product_object
    with object identifier (product_id) as
    select p.product_id,
    p.title,
    p.media_type,
    p.standard_number,
    physical_specifications_object(spec.physical_specifications_id,
    spec.page_count,
    spec.product_id,
    spec.four_color_count,
    spec.two_color_count,
    spec.table_count,
    spec.binding_type,
    spec.height,
    spec.width),
    cast(multiset(select *
    from market_object_view mkt
    where mkt.product_id(+) = p.product_id) as market_table) as markets,
    cast(multiset(select f.feature_id, f.feature_text, f.feature_type
    from feature f
    where f.product_id = p.product_id) as product_feature_table) as product_features
    from product p,
    physical_specifications spec
    where p.product_id = spec.product_id(+)
    The objective is to generate XML for a product list with all the product subelements. The simple query "select * from product_object_view" when fed to the XML-SQL utility generates multi-level SQL. Note that Oracle 8i allows up to two level collection nesting in object types. Oracle 9i removes this limitation.

  • Using XML in Oracle

    Good Morning!
    I wanted to insert some xml Data into my Orcale XML DB:
    First of all I registered 2 Schemas required for the XML, like this:
    Begin
    DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.registerSchema(
    schemaURL => 'Mailpiece_Processing/oif_dtypes',
    schemaDoc => bfilename('XML_TEST','oif_dtypes.xsd'));
    End;
    then Created a table:
    Create table XML_default auf XMLType
    then inserted XML like this:
    insert into xml_default
    values
    XMLTYPE
    Bfilename ('XML_TEST', 'Test.xml'),
    nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8'
    Now to my question: Oracle is offering more than one possebility to save XML into its DB. If I import XML like this, is it called CLOB Storage or object relational?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi ,
    I can only give u a few examples here but for the full sytanx and features of this powerful feature u may have to refer to some documentation online or read a book on XML within Oracle Database.
    Let me try a few examples here
    1) To extract the data from XML document an SQL plus command is available in XML DB. This feature is available from 10G onwards
    example : select xmlelement(name,ename) from emp
    Output will look like

  • Oracle  - Using XML in Oracle/ SORRY double Post

    SORRY for double Post!
    Good Morning!
    I wanted to insert some xml Data into my Orcale XML DB:
    First of all I registered 2 Schemas required for the XML, like this:
    Begin
    DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.registerSchema(
    schemaURL => 'Mailpiece_Processing/oif_dtypes',
    schemaDoc => bfilename('XML_TEST','oif_dtypes.xsd'));
    End;
    then Created a table:
    Create table XML_default auf XMLType
    then inserted XML like this:
    insert into xml_default
    values
    XMLTYPE
    Bfilename ('XML_TEST', 'Test.xml'),
    nls_charset_id('AL32UTF8'
    Now to my question: Oracle is offering more than one possebility to save XML into its DB. If I import XML like this, is it called CLOB Storage or object relational?
    Thanks in advance
    runkel

    Hi ,
    I can only give u a few examples here but for the full sytanx and features of this powerful feature u may have to refer to some documentation online or read a book on XML within Oracle Database.
    Let me try a few examples here
    1) To extract the data from XML document an SQL plus command is available in XML DB. This feature is available from 10G onwards
    example : select xmlelement(name,ename) from emp
    Output will look like
    <NAME>SMITH </NAME>
    <NAME> JOHN </NAME>
    <NAME> JONES </NAME>
    2) CREATE TABLE FAMILIES (F_ID NUMBER(3), F_XML XMLTYPE);
    insert into families values(1,xmltype('<XML.....>'));
    or
    insert into families values(1,''<XML>......' ));
    Hope this helps !!!

  • Generating multi-level XML in Oracle 8i using XML-SQL utility

    Oracle 8i has a limitation when it comes to the object types. Only one-level nesting of collection is allowed. Oracle 9i apparently removes this limitation.
    I am trying to generate XML for a hierarchical (conceptually) structure. To do that I am using XML-SQL utility (XSU) running agains an object view build on top of the relational data. The problem is the limit to onelevels of colelction nesting. Oracle 8i gives you a way to create a view with more levels of nesting by using references (REF). The problem is that when XSU runs agains a view with the references, it inserts the references into the XML document (instead of dereferencing them).
    Is there a way to generate XML with Oracle 8i with more than two levels of collection nesting?
    Thank you.

  • Is XML-SQL Utility for Java run on Client Side?

    A question about the XML-SQL Utility for Java
    When a client program connect to a Oracle database (the clinet program and Oracle DB is run on two different machine. Oracle 8i is used) and use the oracle.xml.sql.query.OracleXMLQuery Class (form the XSU) to generate XML by given a SQL query. I want to know the transforation process is execute in the Clinet side or the database?
    Is there any method that i can retrieve the XML directly from the database rather then doing the transformation form the Client side?

    Set JDK_HOME to the directory where you install your JDK (Java Development Kit).
    So instance, I've install JDK1.1.8 on my
    C drive so
    set JDK_HOME=c:\jdk1.1.8;c:\jdk1.1.8\bin

  • Can Discoverer be used as an XML Data source for XMLP ?

    I am wondering if Discoverer can generate an XML Data Source for XMPL.
    I have heard that Discoverer Viewer can have XML as an output. Is there a way of using this XML output with XMLP and, if yes, how to batch both steps ?

    Hi
    My understanding is that Discoverer does not generate XML data as an ouput that XMLP can consume. The XML is does generate is actually an XML RDF for Oracle Reports.
    XMLP is integrated thou, when you export your Disco report to PDF thats XMLP doing the conversion to PDF for you.
