XML to Template; im a newb.

Im still fairly in the beginner stage for illustrator and XML... but think I have an opportunity to learn a trick or two.
TASK: Create very VERY basic name plates for a meeting. Basic 8inch x 2inch folded cardstock with names and logos on them.
Tools: Illustrator CS3 & Excel spreadsheet with all 50 people (cell for Rank / first / last / company)
Solution 1: create a basic layout, copy/paste 50 times, change the data... easy, takes a little time (50 people is not that much).
Solution 2: make this 100x more difficult but learn a 'process' along the way that may make life simpler from here on in (like learning actions in PS).
So, is there something that AI CS3 can do as far as talking with XML? **Also what is the proper way to export the XML from excel? I realize that this is not an Microsoft forum but I think it may be as easy as, 'hey dummy, click this then this... presto'
Thanks in advance.

XML (or plain generic Excel usage) requires you to learn the fine art of using variables. Read up in the help. The specifics of the XML definitions would depend on what versions of Office you use. The format of AI's XML can be determined by exporting a variable library from the Variables panel once you have defined your dynamic objects. just be aware that all of this may actually not help you at all - there are some not so minor issues with how AI can't handle some special characters and combinations of spaces, so with some names it would probably only produce nonsense.

  • XML Publisher Template Builder for Adobe Acrobat

    Need a XML Publisher Template Builder for adobe acrobat as is available for word.

    I did so.. however, publisher is not able to substitute xsl syntax by the actual value..
    eg.
    i had a <?X_PO_NUM?> in word (either using text field or manually writing this..) and i converted the word doc into pdf using third party s/w..
    when i uploaded this template pdf with sample data file using xmlp admin repsonsibility, and tried to preview the output,
    substitution is not happening..
    the requirement here is, to have some input fields in final PDF output for which report-users should be able to type values in.
    for which I assume initial template has to be in PDF itself..
    any ideas or pointers will be much appreciated..

  • Report Based on XML Data Template is timing out

    Hi there,
    i have an XML publisher report based on an XML data template that i've written. The report is working fine except when there is huge data that is supposed to come out, its timing out. Ive set the db_fetch_size parameter to 20 and scalable_mode to on but its still timing out.
    If anyone has a solutiom or a thought it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
    Well when i'm opening the report , i wait for about 15 seconds then 'Page Cannot be Displayed' appears on my browser. I'm having this case only when i'm expecting huge data. By huge data i mean that the report gets informations about a deal, when the deal has 10 categories the report runs fine, but when i add all catgories, about 1000, it gives me the 'Page cannot be displayed' error. I'm guessing its a time out issue since i've set the scalable_mode parameter to on. Any thoughts ???

  • Is it possible to use an XML Data Template to create a report in APEX?

    Hi,
    I have created an XML Data Template in BI Publisher passing one parameter and running two queries, then created an RTF Document Template to present the data.
    I can create a nice report in BI Publisher using the two elements. I have used RTF Document Templates to publish reports in APEX but the data comes from a Report region running a single query.
    I would like to run a report based in this kind of XML Data Template, in order to use several children queries related to a parent query. Is it possible to do it in APEX, or you have to use BI Publisher?

    Hi,
    I have the similar question. I used data templates in BI Publisher but now I want to use the same data template in Apex to print some reports.
    I tried to some examples but these were only using report queries. I also tried with the Web Service but this didn't work for me either maybe because I didn't
    used it in the right way. When I used the WS I received the binary of the report so the WS worked it was just the how and where to use it that didn't work for me.
    Now this older entry is BUMPED maybe we find a solution for our problem this way.

  • XML Publisher template. Can't associate to a report

    Hi,
    I made a report with xml output. With it's output I define an rtf template and associate it to an XML Publisher template.
    When I execute this report, I try to choose the template to format the output to excel (in Options button), but lov is empty.
    This is not my first XML Publisher template an I never had this problem, but now I don't know what to do. Any idea?
    These are the steps I follow:
    1- Create a report and setup it on EBS with XML output
    2- Launch the report in EBS and obtain and XML file
    3- Create an RTF template with MS Word, XML Publisher plug-in and XML file
    4- In EBS, XML Publisher Administrator, create a data definition and a template.
    5- In System Administration/Requests I try to associate the template to the report in On Site Tab. The template's lov is empty
    Thanks to all

    Hi,
    It is also mentioned in (Note: 276691.1 - XML Publisher and Concurrent Manager Integration). Anyway, the OP has already provided the solution without referring to any document which should be easy for those who may encounter the same issue.
    Thanks,

  • XML tags in an "export : XML" Report Template

    Hi All,
    I'm using the export XML report template to produce XML from a query. One of the column contains XML tags and the template is translating eg: if the column is "Groups" then I get:
    <Groups>& lt ;Group& gt ;Sales & lt ;/Group & gt ; & lt ;Group& gt ;IT& lt ;/Group& gt ;</Groups>(ignoring all the spaces - OTN is translating the & gt 's :)
    instead of:
    <Groups><Group>Sales<Group><Group>IT</Group></Groups>Is there an easy way to stop this ?
    Thanks,

    Sushant,
    you can try to design the RTF by Regrouping the XML data based on your requirement then you may get proper order.

  • Custom Alert Email Templates Issue - List Alerts emails not using customized XML alert template

    I have recently customized the XML alerts template (AlertTemplates.xml) for our site collection in SharePoint 2010 to exclude specific fields in the email when users who have subscribed to a list using the "Alert Me" feature.  I
    have renamed the custom alerts XML file and loaded the custom template in the following directory (%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web server extensions\14\TEMPLATE\XML) and
    restarted IIS.  Once users subscribe to the alerts using the list using the "alert me" function they received the customized email as intended.
    We needed to auto-subscribe users to the email alerts so what I did was used a powershell script to add users to the alert subscriptions using the script shown in below:
    Import-Csv D:\Temp\filename.csv | ForEach-Object{
    $webUrl=$_.WebUrl
    $listTitle=$_.List
    $alertTitle=$_.AlertTitle
    $subscribedUser=$_.SubscribedUser
    $alertType=$_.AlertType
    $deliveryChannel=$_.DeliveryChannel
    $eventType=$_.EventType
    $frequency=$_.Frequency
    $oldAlertID=$_.ID
    $web=Get-SPWeb $webUrl
    $testAlert = $web.Alerts | WHERE { $_.ID -eq $oldAlertID }
    IF ($testAlert) {
    $web.Alerts.Delete([GUID]$oldAlertID)
    Write-Host Old alert $oldAlertID deleted. -Foregroundcolor Cyan
    $list=$web.Lists.TryGetList($listTitle)
    $user = $web.EnsureUser($subscribedUser)
    $newAlert = $user.Alerts.Add()
    $newAlert.Title = $alertTitle
    $newAlert.AlertType=[Microsoft.SharePoint.SPAlertType]::$alertType
    $newAlert.List = $list
    $newAlert.DeliveryChannels = [Microsoft.SharePoint.SPAlertDeliveryChannels]::$deliveryChannel
    $newAlert.EventType = [Microsoft.SharePoint.SPEventType]::$eventType
    $newAlert.AlertFrequency = [Microsoft.SharePoint.SPAlertFrequency]::$frequency
    if($frequency -ne "Immediate"){
    $AlertTime=$_.AlertTime
    $newAlert.AlertTime=$AlertTime
    $newAlert.Update()
    Write-Host Created $newAlert.Title for $subscribedUser . -Foregroundcolor Cyan
    } ELSE {
    Write-Host Alert $alertTitle for $subscribedUser already done. Moving on. -Foregroundcolor Magenta
    When I ran the script and added the users and restarted the service, all users who were auto-subscribed via this method would get the email without the customizations that were done in the custom template.  All users who manually subscribed to the list
    using the "Alert Me" function would get the customized email.
    Does anyone know why users who manually subscribe would get the custom email alert and why users who were auto-subscribed using the powershell script do not get the custom email alert?

    Hi  ,
    According to your description, my understanding is that users who were auto-subscribed using the PowerShell script do not get the custom email alert.
    For your issue, it can be caused by the auto-subscribed alert email which is generated by PowerShell script is  using OOTB alert template. You can add the following script into your script for setting
    the alerts’ alert email template:
    $contentService = [Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebService]::ContentService
    $AlertsTemplateCollection =new-object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPAlertTemplateCollection($contentService)
    $newAlert.AlertTemplate = $AlertsTemplateCollection["YOUR_UNIQUE_TEMPLATE_NAME_VALUE"]

    Does anyone know why users who manually subscribe to the alerts get the customized email, and users who were auto-subscribed using the powershell script do not get the customized email and get the standard generic email template?

    Hi  ,
    According to your code, it create a new alert using SPUser.Alerts.Add() method. For this method, it will create a new alert based on the predefined alert template by default.
    If you only assigned the custom alert template to the list, users who manually subscribe to the alerts get the customized email, but users who were auto-subscribed using the PowerShell script get the standard
    generic email template.
    For your issue, you can set the new alert ‘s alert template:

  • The file should be in XML-DATA-TEMPLATE format

    Hi,
    When I am trying to upload the Data Definition file in XML publisher with EBS 11.5.10.2, I got "The uploaded file GLPAYBDXDO.xml is invalid. The file should be in XML-DATA-TEMPLATE format". I have tried changing the file name to different names including XML-DATA-TEMPLATE but I could not succeed. I appreciate for any help.
    Thanks,
    Ram.

    What is the content of your xml file. Is this sample xml file or Data Template.

  • How to do subtemplate Using XML Publisher Template Builder for Word 5.6.2

    Is it possible to do subtemplate (similar to subreport in crystal report) using XML Publisher Template Builder for Word 5.6.2?. If yes, can anyone explain how to call or import subtemplate from main template?
    Thank you
    V.Piraba

    Hi V. Piraba,
    Here is how it works for me in Microsoft Word 2003. I'm not sure if it will work in Word 5.6.2.
    Creating Subtemplates
    1) Make sure you fill in the “Territory” field when creating Subtemplates. Otherwise there will be no way to import the Subtemplate into another Template. The Import command requires the Territory field to call it from other Templates. You will get a big Java error if you try to import a Subtemplate that does not have the Terriroty field populated.
    Importing Subtemplates
    1) Place the following syntax at the beginning of your XML Publisher template to import a subtemplate (in Oracle Applications)
    <?import:xdo://XDO.[Template Code Name].English.US?>
    Example: <?import:xdo://XDO.WC_SUBTEMPLATE_LOGOS.English.US?>
    2) Use the following commands to importing Subtemplates from local/network drives (outside of Oracle Applications):
    <?import:file:C:/Temp/WC Subtemplate - Logos.rtf?>
    <?import:file:L://Templates/WC Subtemplate - Logos.rtf?>
    <?import: file:///C:WorkChemical.xsl?>
    You can email me at [email protected] if you have further questions.
    Hope this helps!
    Dan

  • Data template is invalid. Should be in XML-DATA-TEMPLATE format.

    Hi,
    I am trying to create & upload a Data Template for a Data Definition in XML Publisher. When I try to upload my data template, it shows me the error :-
    " The uploaded file PAFPURUP_TEMPLATE.xml is invalid. The file should be in XML-DATA-TEMPLATE format. "
    Can any please suggest me a possible resolution to this error? Below is my data template content :-
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="WINDOWS-1252" ?>
    <dataTemplate name="PAFPURUP_TEMPLATE" description="Data template for PAFPURUP" defaultPackage="PA_PAFPURUP_PKG" version="1.0">

    </group>
    </dataStructure>
    </dataTemplate>
    Many Thanks,
    Niranjan

    Hi Fred,
    Thanks for your response. The issue was actually with the xml format. I had missed '?' at the end of 1st line of the xml.

    Niranjan
