Xorg 1.8 - Nvidia

Okay, so yesterday I decided to reinstall Archlinux and I've run into some trouble. Basically my graphics card (Nvidia 7600GS) does not want to work with Xorg 1.8 with nvidia's official drivers. It displays an error while trying to load the NVIDIA module. I have also tried the upcoming drivers available on testing and it still wouldn't work. As a last resort I tried the xf86-video-nv drivers and everything worked out of the box.
You can see the logs and configurations over here:
20-nvidia.conf: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/229593/
Xorg.0.log: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/229591/
Xorg.0.log.old: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/229592/
.xinitrc: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/229590/
Also, since hal is no longer used how should I deal with automounting? Is the ck-launch-session in my .xinitrc still necessary?
Regards.

Thanks a lot.
because now in 2.6.34 nouveau is in the kernel tree.
Shouldn't I be able to aumount with udev? (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ude … SB_devices)
if you have the goal the really get rid of hal (i don't see why you want that) then it should be the right wiki.

  • Unable to start xorg after latest nvidia update

    Hi,
I have NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 card. I did update to version 346.47 of nvidia driver and figured out that after reboot SDDM dont start. I disabled login manager and tried to start xorg server manually but without success. I see that there is segmentation fault in log but don't understand where it comes from exectly.

In addition, in order to disable sddm I downloaded latest Arch linux installation CD (2015.02.01) but I was unable to start PC with this version. Loading stuck after first 3 lines, after "triggering udevevents".
I had old version 2014.08 and it worked ok.
    Thanks,

I just wanted to echo eugeneyche's comment. I ran the same steps mentioned by ElectricPrism but that didn't really fix them. I had to add nomodeset to my kernel parameters. I now want to know what's really going on. For the record, this was my backtrace:

  • Xorg 7 mod / nvidia / libgl-dri conflict

I run the tesing repo of arch, and want to use xorg modular with nvidia. Although it runs with xf86-input-nv, I'ld like to run the nvidia driver - I think this is the best if you like to have 3D Acceleration, right?
So, as many have mentioned before, I found that nvidia from testing conflicts libgl-dri, that can't be removed as it is a dependency of mesa. Some advices tend to the direction to just remove mesa and libgl-dri, some say you should'nt.
I would like to know how I should act now. I have a clean machine, just installed and set up, and don't want to march in the wrong direction.
    Regards

Hi, Annette. I have forced pacman to remove libgl-dri and ignore dependencies. It works - but I don't know it that is the way one should go. I don't know waht the xorg package becomes in the end, and how the nvidia package will finally fit to modular. Right now, I think it is a hack.

  • [SOLVED] building xorg-server: libgl & nvidia-utils conflict

    Hello!
I somehow feel like I'm totally missing the point, but...
edit: although I think (not sure any more) this was the same procedure when I first compiled xorg-server, I maybe should mention, I'm now using the testing xorg.
I still don't really understand, why I need libgl to build xorg-server. Aren't nvidia-utils supposed to replace that? Is there a way of building xorg-server with nvidia-utils instead of libgl and if yes: are there (dis-/) advantages doing so other than not having to uninstall nvidia-utils while compiling xorg-server?
Or the other way around: Perhaps it's just me, but I feel "funny" having to remove something that's vital to my installation before I can compile something that's vital to my installation, too... so is it really OK to remove nvidia-utils and compile xorg-server without it or am I doing it wrong?
    Thank you for enlightening me

Well AFAIK, The nVIDIA closed source drivers haven't caught up with xorg server 1.6 which is why you need libgl to build xorg-xserver 1.6+. I personally perfer the open source drivers over Fglrx (FireGL and Radeon X) and the closed source nVIDIA drivers as well.
edit: xorg server is 1.6 in testing so if you want to compile from source, and have the closed source nvidia drivers, you would need to compile xorg server 1.5.XX
P.S. You cannot have both, the nvidia drivers and the open source drivers (libgl), running at the same time which is why the nvidia-* packages are to be removed.
    Cheers!

  • Xorg configuration with nvidia 6800gs agp and flatron l222wt

my computer is set to run with a l222wt lcd monitor with a 1680x1050 native resolution on a nvidia 6800gs vid card through a analog port.  for wutever reason, my video settings are no longer being detected by xorg anymore after i install xorg and the nvidia driver.  my last arch linux install was fine (i had been using a standard crt at 1280x1024) and when i switched monitors it autodetected the resolution.  however, when i went to reinstall linux, it no longer autodetected and i got horrible settings.  i tried to use the mode setting under the display subsection to set my resolutiona dn still no go.  is their any better way to force it to use my preffered resolution?
    thanks

well all is working now.... i had not ever edited resolutions using the modeline in the monitor section.... all i needed to do was enter my correct modeline settings and bango correct
as for the ftp install problem i just burned the new 2008.04rc i686 iso and like the arch linux of old it worked once more
    thanks

  • [SOLVED] Xorg freeze with nvidia GeForce 210 when resizing terminal

    Hello,
I am working on Archlinux. My computer freeze when I resize a terminal window.
To reproduce the problem, I follow the below steps :
1- launch openbox (with tint2, xcompmgr and nitrogen)
2- start the "terminal" console emulator (with true transparent background)
3- launch opera and go to a website which take a while to load (with a lot of data) (I used http://www.lemonde.fr)
4- while the website is loading, switch to the terminal window and double click on the title bar to maximize it
         5- the box freeze
I am not able to take the control back. I cannot exit or kill Xorg / Openbox. I cannot switch to a text terminal (ttyx). No key sequence is working.
Only a hard reset of the box is working.
I have tried to disable the transparent background of the terminal window without success.
I have tried to not start xcompmgr without success.
The problem also occurs with rxvt-unicode instead of terminal.
It seems the problem happens more often when using console emulator based on vte.
vte itself has the same issue.
The only workaround I have found is to disable the harware acceleration with the below parameter in the xorg.conf file:
    Option    "RenderAccel"    "true"
The problem with this workaround are poor graphical performances.
Could you please let me know if you have any idea / clue to identify / fix this problem ?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi jasonwryan,
Your thread helps a lot. I saw a lot of posts but not this one.
This workaround is fine for me to wait the fix.
    Thanks a lot
    Workaround :
It seems the problem might be linked to transparent items like background.
As explained in the above thread :
According to the bug report the nVidia driver is freaking out and creating too many events, which causes an event buffer in Xorg to overflow.  It works OK with the older Xorg, though.
So the temporary solution is to downgrade 3 packages.
    Install the tool to downgrade
    > yaourt -Sy downgrade
    Downgrade
Note the item number can change
    > downgrade xf86-input-evdev
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 2 (xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server-common
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-common-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
Be carefull : don't update these 3 packages when updating your system (pacman -Syu) since it is not fixed.

  • Xorg 1.6, nvidia and screen resolutions

I just upgraded to xorg 1.6 from testing, including the nvidia drivers and kernel from testing.  Everything is working great (and it fixed the libxi keyboard layout problems I was having), except that I can no longer select the screen resolution I want from the nvidia-settings application.  The set of resolutions is very limited and I'm getting a horizontal stretch due to an incorrect aspect ratio.
I've tried manually adjusting the xorg.conf file after saving it in nvidia-settings, but it makes a mess of the file and I couldn't get it working.  Does anybody know how to add screen resolutions into the nvidia-settings application?
    Thank you!
    Darin

Happened to me with most recent 1.5 update, I downgraded back to previous one to get working again. And now same happened with 1.6, this time I downgrade again without any further testing until someone else gets it solved

  • Xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I upgraded this past week to xorg-server 1.6.1-1, nvidia 180.44-1, and kernel26 2.6.29.1-4.  When I rebooted today I found a few things are broken:
I have a laptop and external monitor dual screen setup where each screen is a separate x screen, as setup by nvidia-settings.  After upgrading if I hold down any key for half a second or more (to trigger key repeat), my display on both monitors goes black and my mouse and keyboard stop responding (can't switch terminals, can't kill x...).  Resuming from xscreensaver also triggers this same problem.
Another oddity is that when I move my mouse cursor from one monitor to the other a lingering "copy" of the cursor stays on the monitor I just move away from at the transition point to the other monitor.
If I physically disconnect my external monitor (w/o changing xorg.conf) X displays none of the problems listed above.
My xorg.conf is below.  Most of it is probably not useful, although I should point out that I have input hotplugging disabled w/ AutoAddDevices false:

have you looked at /var/log/xorg.0.log for warnings and errors?
you need to get rid of ..
        Load           "type1"
        Load           "freetype"
If you want independent X screens you need to get rid of..
        Option         "Xinerama" "1"
or change "1" to "0" or "false"
For two screens you should only need two device sections and you have three.
Alot of people are having good results with a minimal xorg.conf with the new xorg-server. I can't really say too much about it as I still use my xorg.conf, although I could probably cut it down quite a bit.
It looks like your xorg.conf needs a lot of tweaking. Or you could just delete most everything in it and let autoconfig do it's thing. Then just add little by little till you get everything working.
Not sure how much it will help because i'm not using a laptop, but rather a desktop, but here's my working xorg.conf set up with nvidia and three seperate X screens.
    # Xorg configuration file altered by Leigh
    # Updated (Dec 2008)
    # Three independent screens
    # Three cards... (GeForce7900 PCI-E, GeForce6800 PCI-E, GeForce4 MX PCI)
    # Monitors... (Two Dell 2005 FPW's, One NEC MultiSync FE1250+ CRT)
    # Note: (Due to GeForce4 MX, I need to use the legacy nvidia drivers, nvidia-96xx.)

  • Xorg 1.8 + nvidia drivers

    Hey guys!
Yesterday, I upgraded to the new xorg 1.8.0.901-1 with nvidia 195.36.24-1 and nvidia-utils 195.36.24-2, but in some sites the scrolling is veeeeery slow (using the scroll bar, with the mouse wheel it's better, but not 100%), example page: https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/38131 . In this page, when I try to scroll down using the scroll bar, my X process consumes between 40 and 55% of CPU o.O, and Firefox is very choppy (ps. Pango is disabled in Firefox).
My video card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400 GS] (rev a1)
Am I missing some important/magic option in the device section?
    Here's my xorg.conf (generated by X -configure)

  • Xorg 1.8 - nvidia 96xx legacy driver

Since a few weeks I use Archlinux and I'was happy with it until my last upgrade. After this (incl. kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8) I was lost in the dark. Googling learned me that the nvidia 96xx legacy driver (I have an old Geforce card) cannot cope with xorg 1.8 (yet??). Could this be better coordinated in the future?
If not, can someone please explain (in simple terms, I'm a newbie, what to do if such things happen).
    Thanks in advance.

    Lets see (long post)

I didn't use anything else to install nvidia-96xx, it was with pacman. nvidia-96xx is no longer on repos but it was when i made the setup. I dont see why they removed it. Works 100% good here on my SD plasma. Even with games and xbmc.

  • Xorg 1.8 nvidia GeForce4 MX 4000 problem.

Hello! because the nvidia-96xx proprietary drivers are not compatible with the new version of xorg, I decided to use the free drivers nouveau.
    # pacman -S nouveau-dri xf86-video-nouveau
But I can not get a hardware 3D rendering.

3D is unsupported for nouveau as of now. There is a tutorial on the website to try to enable it.

  • [Solved] (Partial) Loss of vid acceleration with xorg 1.7 & nvidia 190

I've noticed people having a lot of problems with the new xorg server crashing, but my problem appears to be different:  Xorg is stable, hasn't crashed yet: but games (and steam) fail to load.  However, video acceleration works just fine for compiz and glxgears.
The games are run in a 32 bit chroot, which is completely up-to-date. I haven't seen anyone else with this problem, so I'm creating a new post (whith a topic title that may be way off :).
Here are the error messages displayed when I try to load the games:

Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.
I've posted on the tail end of the output for Quake4 and ET:Quake Wars for brevity, but included it all for Steam.  I've lost the old xorg and nvidia packages, so I'm unable to downgrade.  Also, "echo $DISPLAY" in both native and 32bit chroot terminal's output :0.0.
Am I missing something obvious here?  Anyone else experiencing something similar?
    Last edited by 5arge (2009-11-15 18:01:17)

The problem was because of the 32 bit chroot: X server wasn't allowing access.
"xhost +local:" run from the terminal before trying the games fixes it (but needs to be done with every reboot).
Now, I just need to figure out what's changed seeing as I never had to do this before... (schroot?, Xorg?, ??)

  • [SOLVED]Triple Monitors Xorg with AMD&NVIDIA: XRANDR and Xinerama...

    Hello,
I'm trying to set up a tri monitor setup. Unfortunately I must use 2 cards, one an AMD HD4350 and a PCI Geforce FX200. (Old skool I know)
Due to the restrictions, I am forced to use the open source drivers (else nvidia glx will clash).
As I see it, I have 2 solutions available to me:
1: Use XRANDR to span the displays (this is what I did previous to the introduction of the third monitor and nvidia card to my system)
I tried to do this, by setting up a second X screen on the NVIDIA card, disabling Xinerama; but after much googling I can't figure out the syntax for panning across 2 screens (X screens) in XRANDR, even tho it's >1.3, which supposedly supports multi card output.
2:Use Xinerama, sacrificing randr, and composite extensions.
I also attempted to do this, with some limited success. I could get the NVIDIA screen to be right of the ATI, but I couldn't get 2 independent outputs running on the ATI card, even with "ZapohHeads" appended to one of the device sections for my ATI card.
Any suggestions to how I can sort this?
    I'm amazed there's not a way to have mixed nvidia/radeon on X11 in 2011.
    Thanks,
    Chris.
    EDIT:
It turns out the xrandr multi card output is an urban myth.
I went the Xinerama route, I've pasted my xorg.conf below.

  • Xorg segmentation fault / nvidia proprietary blob

    Hi!
I've been experiencing this issue with xorg crashing leaving the system completely unresponsive and with completely black screen. It appears to happen at random times and not consistently at all. It occurred for the first time several days ago. Unfortunately I'm not in a good position to track what may have caused this because I did pretty massive update 2-3 weeks ago. Since then I've been updating pretty regularly.
    Here are some xorg logs.
    It's pretty much full with:
(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

I'm not really sure whether this is separate issue or not but I thought I should include it here. I don't really know what this is about but I've seen "kwin effects restarted" KDE messages occurring at these times too. I'm not sure how related this may be but I'm seeing lots of artifacts on rendered pages when using chromium browser. Nothing of these used to happen before I went and updated the system. Everything was rock solid for me.

I'm not sure what is supposed to happen after xorg crashes and whether it's being restarted but everything related to xorg is unresponsive. The system otherwise is running fine but I haven't been able to find a solution to recover from this other than cold restart. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard for instance and it's being registered(probably udev is responsible for this) but it's still "dead".
Is it nvidia's fault or something else may be going on? I know you can't really do much dealing with the binary blob. I haven't given nouveau a chance for a long time but I may try this in the future if it helps with something tracking this. I'm using nvidia 325.15-10 package from the official repos for now and the card is gtx 570 fermi. xorg is the latest one in the repos.
I'm not sure what driver version this package is based on(325.15 I guess). On the nvidia site the newest ones are 331.13 beta and 319.60. I can try them but I'm not even sure whether there are some patches needed to make them work with the newest kernels. At least I hope someone could provide more info on this because it seems interesting.
I'll gladly provide more info if needed. I just don't know what more could be useful.
    Thanks!

    saty,
Is this continuing to happen for you? I am experiencing the same issue with version 325. I downgraded from 331 because there were some major bugs in that version. Have you found any solution?
