Xorg configuration file

Is there anyone using an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 285M card? If so, could you please give me your xorg.conf file? I installed arch linux on my new laptop a week ago and for some reason haven't been able to get xorg to use the nvidia drivers. I am hoping that someone would have an xorg config file, for their GTX 285M card. I would be happy to try it out.. cos Im at my wits end trying to get it to work. All of last week, was just one big drag after another trying to find a solution. This is my last resort... I hate to think i might have to install crap vinduze..
Thank you.
PS: actually an xorg.conf file on a system with any of the newest nvidia cards might work I think.
thaks

The only line I added was "Option "NoLogo" "True"".
As you can see, my xorg is very bare and plain. Could that be the reason why Im not getting display? Are there supposed to be certain options that I have missed?
And is DPMS necessary?
Thats the xorg.conf file.
What follows is the log file that you had asked for.

There are a few warnings regarding ACPI and "AllowEmptyInput". Could that be the problem?

  • Xorg 1.8 : Does it work with Xorg -configure?

    Hey everyone
Does Xorg 1.8 work with Xorg --configure  or would one have to manually set the configuration files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/?  Also another question, if I am using xorg 1.8. do I still have to add HAL to the list of DAEMONS  in /etc/rc.conf or would listeing DBUS only be sufficient to get a working X configuration?

Yes, `Xorg -configure` still works, and no, Xorg does not need HAL anymore.
D-Bus is only needed if you have applications that use it (e.g., desktop environment programs).

  • [solved] Xorg -configuration crashes (signal 11)

I've been trying to get Xorg to work all day without success. What I've been doing:
    * Install archlinux from scratch
    * Upgrade with pacman -Syu
    * Install Xorg
    * Install fglrx
    * Run Xorg -configure.
This is when it crashes with the following output:

If I enable the testing repository and perform a full system upgrade, I can get X to work with the open source drivers for ATI. But I need to get fglrx to work in order to use tv-out. So there seem to be a problem with Xorg itself, not the driver in this case.
    Any ideas?

Well, in your previous log, the crash backtrace:
    Backtrace:

died inside /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so - so I figured if you removed fglrx, Xorg -configure wouldn't try to use that module, and the crash would go away.   I'm glad I guessed right.
Could you please add [solved] to your topic title?

  • Can't figure how to write Xorg configuration for second screen

Basically I've got the main monitor going as it should, but I can't configure the secondary monitor.
    The monitors:
Main monitor: 2560x1440, 144Hz, normal rotation, placed to the left.
Secondary monitor: 1920x1080, 60Hz, rotated clockwise, placed to the right.
An important detail is that the main screen has a broken EDID (/var/log/Xorg.0.log has errors and warnings about it). Without the lines currently present in my Xorg configuration, X won't start.
This is important to note because I can't rely on Xorg figuring out the monitors on its own (as I've done on most setups the last decade or so).
Here's the current version of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DP-0"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    Modeline "2560x1440@144" 3322.15 2560 2592 15216 15248 1440 1460 1493 1513
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "HDMI-0"
    Option "Rotate" "Left"
    Option "RightOf" "DP-0"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NoLogo"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "DP-0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Modes "2560x1440_144"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
The second "Monitor" section seems to be non-working at the moment, that monitor stays black.
I've tried adding plenty of different things to that, but i can't ever get the secondary monitor going (the main one works).
The following command gets it working, but it's not in the configuration file and I don't how to translate the command:
    xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of DP-0 --rotate left
Here's the output from xrandr before running the above command:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 2560 x 1440, maximum 16384 x 16384

DVI-D-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Unknown-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Here's the output from xrandr after running the command above:
    Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3640 x 1920, maximum 16384 x 16384
DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

    720x576 50.00
    720x480 59.94
    640x480 59.94 59.93
    DP-0 connected primary 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 598mm x 336mm
    2560x1440 59.95 + 144.00* 120.00 99.95 84.98 23.97
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-D-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Unknown-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
This suggests to me that in my Xorg configuration I should configure the "Screen" section differently, since in the second "xrandr" output, the first line (that starts with "Screen0") contains the resolution "3640 x 1920".
However, when I tried to replace the line "Modes    "2560x1440_144"" with "Modes    "3640x1920"", X didn't start.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
    EDIT: Added more information.

Your PreferredMode line is wrong, it should be 2560x1440@144, not 2560x1440_144. You see, the numbers are meaningless, what you provide with Modeline is a name. And then everywhere else, you refer to that name. To demonstrate, if the Nvidia driver supports PreferredMode, this will work
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DP-0"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    Modeline "ugabuga" 3322.15 2560 2592 15216 15248 1440 1460 1493 1513
    Option "PreferredMode" "ugabuga"
    EndSection
If this doesn't work, we'll try Nvidia's MetaModes option instead of PreferredMode.
About the Device section, you don't need it because selecting the nvidia driver is taken care of by /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

  • Xorg.conf file after install? Where?

I know this is probably the worst question to ask but I couldn't find anything in the search for it.  I just installed Arch (using a .7 CD) with an FTP install and naturally it chose the xorg7 version.  His XServer starts alright but I noticed we both can't seem to find the xorg.conf file... usually it's in the /etc/X11/ folder (I think that's where it is on mine at home.)
The mouse, screen and almost everything works but for the life of me I can't find this configuration file.  Does it use defaults if one doesn't exist or perhaps it's somewhere I'm not looking?  Any advice would be appreciated as it isn't using the nvidia glx drivers but the basic nv.
    Thanks in advance.
(Forgot to mention I'm used to using the X.org 6 version on my home PC and just trying to figure this out before I upgrade to 7.)

mac57 wrote:Alternately, you can just copy an old xorg.conf from another distro you have been using, place it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and edit appropriately. This is what I did, and it worked like a champ.
You'll want to be carefull about that with xorg7. The path locations will change then. It may be better to generate a new one and copy in the difference in options.

  • Xorg.conf file just for synaptics trackpad ?

I have a problem at the moment with my laptops synaptics trackpad.
every other distro the trackpad side scrolling works fine but with Arch it only works with an xorg.conf (it did on Xorg 1.5 anyway)
If I use hotplugging the side scrolling works but after 5 or 10 mins just stops working until I reboot the machine. I have even added the settings into the .fdi file for hotplugging and still it fails after a short while.
I have only been succesfull when using an xorg.conf but after upgrading to Xorg 1.6 using a xorg.conf has just been a headache (keyboard not working and even kernel panics)
so is it possible to just have my synaptics settings in a xorg.conf and let hotplugging sort the rest ?
    cheers

  • Xorg configuration over a laptop with iintel video card

    Hi to everybody!!!
I'm a newbie in using archlinux. I decided to use it after my curiosity in learning more about this OS!
I've installed archlinux 0.7.2 in base version and then I upgraded everything.
I've installed KDE, but in configuring my xorg.conf file, I'm having lots of problem.
I've got a notebook, an acer travelmate 611TXV with embedded intel video card (82815 CGC). Typing
    lshwd | less
    , the monitor shows:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Coorp. |82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (vesa)
I should consider vesa driver or not?
When I set xorg.conf (generate with
    hwd -xa
command, I create e new device to describe my video card, because there wasn't, like this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "vesa"
    VendorName "All"
    BoardName "All"
    EndSection
    typing
    startx
kde starts, but it uses a too low video resolution. It should use 1280x768, the lcd is 14.1"
I can't set the right one! how to?
what I have to do with that "Modeline...
that are reater my lcd capabilities? can I delete them?
Over win XP the lcd woks fine at 1280x768 with 60Hz.
Is there someone to help me? Please
    Vincenzo

  • Xorg -configure don't work with PB DotM

    hello folks
i got a brand new packardbell dotM netbook , how i use arch in my worksation i decided to install arch in the netbook
every goes fine exept when i want to configure Xorg.
i installed the xf86-video-intell package, and tryed to make a "Xorg -configure" that work with the screen ( by the way the screen is very special http://www.tecnologiait.com.ar/?p=7315 the standart resolution is 1204x600 !!
what recommend me do to guys?, use Xorg -configure don't work ( even show tvm) , and intel doesn't provide a tool like the nvidia-xconfig,
or should i write my own xorg.conf file?
ohh yes and could you make me a suggestion for a DE, i tried kdemod in the netbook ( i am kde-lover) but without a big Gpu kdemod goes slow, which DE to do recommend for a netbook, i am between E17 and LXDE
    thanks in advance

    Hello Slacknatcher!
You can port a working configuration file, from another working distribution, or from livecd like Chakra, Ubuntu, Sushe.
Can it work if you try without any xorg.conf file? Can you try out another drivers, like binary nvidia from nvidia, or opensource nv? And in the last case vesa?

  • [SOLVED] Xorg problem: fglrx, startx & Xorg -configure

    Hi,
On a HP 8510p notebook (Core 2 Duo, AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600)
I have just installed Arch Linux, did a system update (pacman -Syu), installed the catalyst package, which depends on xorg-server, among others.
When I do a "Xorg -configure" it fails with a "Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting". As I see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I don't get an (EE)/error. I just can' understand why the X server fails.
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log - with no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 11. Server aborting
Obs: When I do a "startx", with a custom and minimalist xorg.conf, my notebook stops to respond (doesn't function Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Alt-F2,3..., Ctrl-C... noting) and the screen is all black.
But first, I think it should work the "Xorg -configure"

    Hi!
    I'll post some more information...
When I do "startx", like I said, it seems that X is starting, the display changes from grey to black and dark-grey again... but then I can't do nothing to exit, but to press the power button.
So, as no "hwd -x" (uses lshwd -> Segmentation fault) or "Xorg -configure" (Caught signal 11. Server aborting) works, I wrote a xorg.conf by 0, googleing around and inspiring me from the Arch Wiki.
I have no ~/.xinitrc (I have tried with one who had an exec xterm, but no success)
    Package information:
    xorg-server 1.4-5
    xorg-xinit 1.0.7-1

  • Nano syntax highlighting: catch-all syntax for configuration files

After years of using nano, I only recently learned that it supports syntax coloring... (Why would they turn that off by default? ) Well, I thought I'll make up for it by making extra good use of it from now on...
Unfortunately it didn't ship a highlighting syntax for the the kind of files that I use nano the most for: system configuration files.
So I wrote my own, and after tweaking a bit here and there whenever I encountered a config file for which the highlighting wasn't satisfactory at first, I think the result is now good enough (screenshots below) that it's worth sharing with my fellow Arch users:
    Code & Instructions:
    Here is the syntax definition:
    # config file highlighting
    syntax "conf" "(\.(conf|config|cfg|cnf|rc|lst|list|defs|ini|desktop|mime|types|preset|cache|seat|service|htaccess)$|(^|/)(\w*crontab|mirrorlist|group|hosts|passwd|rpc|netconfig|shadow|fstab|inittab|inputrc|protocols|sudoers)$|conf.d/|.config/)"
    # default text
    color magenta "^.*$"
    # special values
    icolor brightblue "(^|\s|=)(default|true|false|on|off|yes|no)(\s|$)"
    # keys
    icolor cyan "^\s*(set\s+)?[A-Z0-9_\/\.\%\@+-]+\s*([:]|\>)"
    # commands
    color blue "^\s*set\s+\<"
    # punctuation
    color blue "[.]"
    # numbers
    color red "(^|\s|[[/:|<>(){}=,]|\])[-+]?[0-9](\.?[0-9])*%?($|\>)"
    # keys
    icolor cyan "^\s*(\$if )?([A-Z0-9_\/\.\%\@+-]|\s)+="
    # punctuation
    color blue "/"
    color brightwhite "(\]|[()<>[{},;:=])"
    color brightwhite "(^|\[|\{|\:)\s*-(\s|$)"
    # section headings
    icolor brightyellow "^\s*(\[([A-Z0-9_\.-]|\s)+\])+\s*$"
    color brightcyan "^\s*((Sub)?Section\s*(=|\>)|End(Sub)?Section\s*$)"
    color brightcyan "^\s*\$(end)?if(\s|$)"
    # URLs
    icolor green "\b(([A-Z]+://|www[.])[A-Z0-9/:#?&$=_\.\-]+)(\b|$| )"
    # XML-like tags
    icolor brightcyan "</?\w+((\s*\w+\s*=)?\s*("[^"]*"|'[^']*'|!?[A-Z0-9_:/]))*(\s*/)?>"
    # strings
    color yellow "\"(\\.|[^"])*\"" "'(\\.|[^'])*'"
    # comments
    color white "#.*$"
    color blue "^\s*##.*$"
    color white "^;.*$"
    color white start="<!--" end="-->"
To install, save the above above code snippet as a file called conf.nanorc in the folder /usr/share/nano/ (or /usr/local/share/nano/ or similar if you feel strongly about the /usr <--> /usr/local separation), and then add the following to the end of the file /etc/nanorc:
    ## Configuration files (catch-all syntax)
    include "/usr/share/nano/conf.nanorc"
    Hints:
The colors I chose look good (imo) with the terminal background and color settings that I use, but might not look good, or even readable, with yours, so simply change the color names in the code snippet to whatever you prefer - valid color names are:
If you use a console with white background, you'll have to change at least the white color I chose for comments and punctuation.
The first code line in the snippet includes a regular expression that defines for which file names this syntax highlighting should be used. Whenever you encounter a config file that is not matched by this, but you would still like to open it with syntax highlighting, you can manually select this syntax with nano's -Y switch, like so:
    nano -Y conf myConfigFile
    Technical Note:
It's implemented as a single catch-all syntax, since nano chooses which syntax to apply based on the filename, and in the case of config files usually not much can be learned about the content format from the file name extension (.conf can by anything from flat key/value tuples to XML, .ini can be the official INI format or something else, etc...).
This means that some compromises have been made, so with this highlighting syntax probably no config file looks 100% as good as a highlighting syntax that would be specifically optimized for one kind of config format, but all in all the vast majority of config files should look pretty good.
    Screenshots:
    /etc/rc.conf,  /etc/hosts:
    /etc/pacman.conf,  /etc/group:
    xorg.conf,  some .desktop file:
    httpd.conf (Apache config),  php.ini:
    More screenshots:
    /etc/fonts/fonts.conf (uses XML)
    /etc/inittab
    /etc/fstab
    /etc/inputrc
    /etc/mime.types
    /etc/protocols
    /etc/xinetd.conf

    You mean GNU makefiles?
I'm afraid they might be out of scope for this generic config-file syntax.
Logically they're not system config files, and technically they're a pretty specialized and complex format (different "types" of rules, rules spanning multiple lines, rules containing arbitrary Bash code, etc.).
This is how an .mk file currently looks with this highlighting syntax:
    $ nano -Y conf /usr/lib/httpd/build/rules.mk
And apart from highlighting variables of the form $$abc or $(abc), I'm not sure how much can be improved here without breaking the highlighting for more conventional config files.
It would probably be better to create a specialized highlighting syntax just for .mk files.
EDIT: I sat down and did just that, here's the result: nano syntax highlighting: GNU makefiles, and here is how the above makefile snipped looks with it:

  • Dell vostro 3500 Xorg configuration problem

Hello i have this dell laptop that i dont not know how to configure xorg
    Monitor
15.6" 40 cm High definition large screen (1366x768) WLED antireflet (WLAN uniquement)

    anyone has any suggestions ?
after a few times i installed the chakra linux and hoping to use its xorg config files but i couldn't find it
    thanks in advance

It should work out of the box, witout config files (if there are any - simply remove them).
Otherwise you may have a look here: http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

  • Safe way to edit system configuration files?

What is a safe way to edit a system configuration file? I mean I did this twice: I edited rc.conf, rebooted and the system failed to boot. Then I had to edit out the typos with a LiveCD.
Is there like a visudo (that edits /etc/sudoers) for rc.conf, xorg.conf, fstab and so on?
    Thanks!

    Majorix wrote:
No I am of course editing those files with sudo. But the problem is, gedit won't check the file for possible errors, thus if you too oversee it and try to reboot using those system files, you will fail.
visudo checks you while you edit, so if you make an error it will warn you in the end.
I was asking if there was a similar tool for the rest of the configuration files.
    Sorry for not being clear.
Oh -- a kind of a babysitter, you mean?
j/k, i screw up config files all the time.
No, as far as I know there is nothing like that for most files. some do have functionality like that, like I think lilo warns you when you write to lilo.conf and the file has errors. and you can run something like testparm for the smb.conf file, and I think there something similar to check apache config files, etc. but for the standard system config files or arch-specific files like rc.conf, fstab, etc. I don't think there is anything. you just have to be sure not to make any mistakes!

  • Xorgconfig or Xorg -configure?

    Hi,
I recently converted to Arch from Ubuntu and this is my first post.
First of all, I wish to express my gratitude to all the developers for such an impressive work.
This distribution looks exceptional and seems to fit exactly what I was looking for.
I have a couple of questions (please forgive me if they are too simple - I don't have much experience with Linux).
    1) How do I generate a good xorg.conf file? I noticed that there are several ways of doing this, each giving different results.
Which one is the best? I need to use two LCD displays in Merged Framebuffer mode.
    2) A question about pacman: if I understand correctly, the command "pacman -Syu" will upgrade every package in the system to its most current state.
I read in some post (I cannot remember where exactly) that there have been cases in which the latest version of a package contained a bug that completely broke the Arch installation.  I was wondering: Is there a way to tune pacman to a desired level of stability when performing upgrades?
For example: let's say one chooses to only upgrade packages when they have been proven to be highly stable.  Is there an automated way of doing this?
Thank you so much for your time and for your help!

Personally when I configured my Xorg system I download HWD. From what I have seen this seems to work well for me and most of the other machines I have put together for my family and friends.
    1) Do a pacman -Sy hwd
               This will download hwd.
    2)Then run hwd -xa
This will run hwd and overwrite your Xorg file with the one is created. Caution though it will over write your old             xorg file. Or you can use hwd -x just to generate one without over writing the original.

For the most part I have no experienced the problem with my arch system. Mainly because I do not use any of the servers that have experimental packages on them.
IF anyone finds anything wrong with what I have said please feel free to correct me.

  • Installation - Xorg Configuration Showstopper (resolved)

This morning, I had attempted to reinstall Arch Linux, after having tried Ubuntu for about a week or so.  Install went well (once I had an up-to-date disc), but then I ran into a serious problem.  The auto-generate xorg.conf files were not working.  As soon as I tested X, I would be greeted by a black screen and then had to reboot manually.  A few more attempts, and I discovered the problem: the contents of the xorg.conf file was getting erased whenever X read it!  What the hell is going on!?

My new Arch install was behaving the exact same way last night. Btw, rather than rebooting, you might try CTRL+ALT+Fx and then back, where you might then be able to CTRL+C out of the test. That worked for me, though not every time.
Anyway, after struggling with X -configure /path/to/xorg.conf for an hour or so, I finally just tried startx, and it worked fine.
EDIT: I should add that when I finally got around to trying startx, I had already installed Fluxbox, hoping some part of that process might dislodge whatever was gumming up the works. I don't know if X would have worked without it or not.
