XQuery is causing lots of disk writing

Hi,
In our system, we found that XQuery is causing lots of disk writing. I guess it is due to cache.
In dbxml document, it says:
All Berkeley DB XML applications are capable of writing temporary files to disk. This happens when the disk cache fills up and so BDB XML is forced to write overflow pages. For the most part, these temporary files can be safely ignored.
I don't understand what it says above.
My question is: Why Xquery operations will cause lots of disk write? (No other proocesses are writing bdb. )
Thanks.
-Yuan

Hi Yuan,
DB XML uses temporary Berkeley DB databases for a number of things during query evaluation, including re-sorting index entries and storing the parsed documents from a WholedocContainer format container. Berkeley DB will write this information out to disk if the cache becomes full. I would suggest that the behaviour you're seeing indicates that you need to allocate more cache for DB XML to work with.

    Hi Techies,
I have a question. Its like the Logs in BI+ in Shared Service Server is taking lot of Disk space about 12 GB a day.
Following files are taking more space
    Shared Service-Security-Client log ( 50 MB )
    Server-message-usage Service.log ( About 7.5 GB )
why this is happening. Any suggestions to avoid this.

  • Does Spotlight use a lot of disk space?

I'm new to Macs — in fact, my first one hasn't arrived yet — and I'm wondering if Spotlight will tie up a lot of disk space? I'm getting a MacBook Pro with a 100GB drive (modest by desktop standards), and I've noticed that Windows search products (e.g., Google Desktop, MSN Desktop) can create 3-5 GB of data after indexing even a modest 30GB hard drive. If Spotlight is going to "waste" gigs of space on my limited laptop drive, I might look into disabling it. Thanks.

Do not worry about it. On my book disk (100Gb with 60Gb occupied) spotlight uses the following space:
    big:~ mtsouk$ ls -l /.Spotlight-V100/

  • Dropped frames caused from slow disks (Disk Speed)

I just bought a hard drive enclosure that holds double hard drives. http://www.ewiz.com/photogallary.php?name=CA-400MXS2&show=g Inside the enclosure I put two 400G Seagate SATA drives and made them both scratch drives for my FCE 4 projects. Now when I'm inside Final Cut and doing motion tricks for my footage a warning keeps popping up saying "RT EXTREME HAS DETERMINED THESE DROPPED FRAMES WERE CAUSED BY SLOW DISK. PLEASE TRY:
-INCREASE THE SPEED OF YOUR DISK
-DECREASE THE NUMBER OF RT LAYERS
-LIMITING YOUR RT BANDWIDTH IN USER PREFERENCES
I don't know how to do any of those things above. Now I checked the user preferences and I couldn't find the "RT bandwidth" option to change. How do you change the disk speed or decrease the RT layers??
Sorry if this is common knowledge. I'm still new with this software.

just remember that if you raid, the drives should be as close to identical as possible.
    i believe this is correct:
    usb 2 = 480 mbps
    fw 400 = 400 mbps
    fw 800 = 800 mbps
that just means usb 2 & fw 4 are about the same, but fw 8 is faster / better for video.
Yeah I was looking at that one right after I posted. That's my #1 pick so far. You have an imac?

  • I hear a lot of disk I/O from my iMac 1TB drive.  How can I see apps may be running in background?  Time Machine is not running.

I hear a lot of disk I/O from my iMac 1TB drive.  How can I see apps may be running in background?  Time Machine is not running.

If you wnat to see the applications that are running, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in /Applications/Utilities). After opening it, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and you will see all the processes that are running.
I/O errors often happen on a damaged hard drive. If you are receiving that error, you should make a backup with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner as soon as possible and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get another hard disk.
If the warranty is void, you can try installing it yourself, but note that there are some iMacs which are very difficult to have the hard drive replaced. Search the steps in iFixit > http://www.ifixit.com

  • What is causing low physical disk % idle time

Recently I observed that all my four hard disks installed in my XP Pro machine show a % idle time physical disk counter between 50-60% all the time, even when the PC is fully idle. I checked the processes running in the background and I can't find nothing
    causing this constant disk activity.
When I run XP in safe mode the counter is normal (average 99,60%). I also observed that in normal mode, when I connect a USB stick, the counter is normal (99,5%). After disconnecting the stick drops again to 50-60%.
How can I find what is causing this disk activity?

If you are getting your information from the Windows Task Manager, that is not disk activity shown.  That is CPU activity.
So, where are you getting your information?

  • Root cause for 100 % disk utilization

    Hi All,
Whenever in one of the dailog instance disk utilization is showing 100% sap system is getting very slow, what is the root cause for 100% utilization .At that moment of time when I checked the CPU usage it showed 98% CPU idle. server is on Windows NT and around 13GB of RAM is always free.
We have only one drive in the apps server. Can this be the cause of 100% disk utilization?
    Waiting for ur frequent responses.
    Regards,
    Prashant

    Hi,
I have answered similar questions :
    [Re: Disk Utilization 100%]
as described above, one thing that cause 100% disk utilization is that writer processes (and read process too) is concentrated only on a single disk (equivalent to single volume group or single logical volume).
we can imagine that a large number of user hitting the single disk (where datafiles exist) on the same time with a huge transaction load.
if we can manage writable datafiles in several locations (equivalent to several volume groups or several logical volumes) where several datafiles exist, writer processes (and read process too) will be distributed to that several locations, so that each location (each disk, each VG or each LV) utilization may not reach 100%.
so it is important to design writable datafiles in multiple location in different disks to prevent 100% disk utilization.
one thing should be remember is to consult with hardware and storage vendor if there is any possibilities bottleneck or I/O issue on your hardware or storage.
    hope it help you.

  • Can't identify cause of non-stop disk writing.

Since Saturday when the server starts up some process begins continuously writing to the disk. It continues forever, degrading performance as other processes wait to access the disk, and also slowly eats space (about 500 MB per hour).
I have identified the process as being something run by sh under the root account. It comes up again as soon as the server is rebooted. I haven't yet found out what or where it is writing to on the disk. I'll try FSLogger tomorrow.
There have been no configuration changes, but this coincides with other issues that have cropped up in the past few days. Can anyone help in identifying what is running (besides just sh) and how to stop it, other than Force Quitting/killing it manually.
    Thank you,
    AJ Zmudosky

FSLogger showed that most of the activity was the script writing to error logs about MySQL crashing and being restarted.
I tried launching mysqld_safe manually from the command line and got the same errors, but there have been no changes to cause it. This happens with both the Apple MySQL, and a fresh copy of 5.0.16 installed in /usr/local.
I stopped both from starting up temporarily.

  • Wireless cutting out with lots of disk access

This happening to anyone else? It's happened to me twice today, but if I'm writing to the disk a lot, either from a wired computer or a wireless one, the wireless network sometimes goes away and won't come back with out a base station reset.

Has anyone seen anything like this?
Basically, try to xfer a lot of data to the drive, or R/W from it a lot, and wireless fails. I lose all wireless connectivity from an XP box running 802.11g, a Powerbook on 802.11 g, and an airport express running 802.11b.
My wired XP box keeps working fine.
This has happened 4 times now. In at least one case, I had to power cycle the base station. The other times, I just had to access it via the utility and make it restart via the update button -- w/ or w/o config change.

  • Lots of disk activity

I run Mac OS 10.8.2 and Firefox 16.0.2
I run into situations where Firefox is writing huge quantities of data to my hard drive. The CPU utilization isn't significant (25% or less), but the Disk Activity is maxed for quite some time (up to a minute), which results in non-responsiveness of all applications.

You can also check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • IMac Seems slow and lots of disk access.

I bought my first iMac a few months ago. However recently the iMac seems to have got really slow. I use it for Lightroom and Photoshop.
Without either of these 2 programs open for example I can just try opening entourage or any other program even Safari sometimes and the disk will just go mad and churn away and it can take ages for the program to open.
How do I find out whats causing the system to go slow? or is this just something I have to live with?

I think the problem could be excessive memory usage.
Just from looking in activity monitor when I have a few progs open.
    Photoshop 1.96GB
    Lightroom 539MB
    Safari 236MB
Also under system memory it says ;-
    Free : 27MB
    Wired : 762MB
    Active : 2.17GB
    Inactive : 1.07GB
    Used : 3.98GB
    Page Ins : 1.41GB
    Page Outs : 1.36GB
    Swap Used : 3.14GB
Does it look like my mac is paging to the disk excessively?

  • Runaway cups tmp files causing full startup disk

    Hi there,
Summary of my question: How do I prevent /private/var/spool/cups/tmp from filling up my wife's hard drive?
    Details:
My wife's 12-inch PowerBook G4 (10.4.8) was giving her "startup disk is almost full" errors, and I found out (using this handy tip) that the culprit was the /private/var/spool/cups/tmp directory: there were 20 or 30 GB of files in there. I don't know what they're for, although based on this post I guess they might have been job history files. So I deleted them (from the terminal, using sudo), and updated the cupsd.conf file as suggested in the post. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if that actually fixed things, or if I'll need to go back and delete these files again sometime.
So my question is this: how do I prevent these files from being generated? This post says not to run server admin 24/7, but my wife's not running it at all (at least not to our knowledge), much less 24/7.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

Never mind--discovered a phantom printer job (said it was still printing, but also said "The process 'hppostprocessing' terminated unexpectedly on signal 10") that presumably was causing all the grief.

  • XI takes a lot of disk space in the non sap partition

    Hello
We use xi to transfer data from the non sap partition to the production partition.
In the non sap partition we have now more than 30 jobs by the name QZDASOINIT
      of the xi user.
In the job log of these jobs there are many messages that says:
" Additional 16 megabytes of storage allocated for this job."
    Message ID : PWS0083
Right now the xi takes about 8 percent of our non sap partition's disk space (not cpu) and it's growing all the time.
From time to time we manually end these jobs.
    We use ecc 6.0  v5r4m0.
Any idea how to solve this problem ?
    Thanks
    benny

    Hi Benny,
For the growing XI you might want to consider archiving as described in [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/3b/505a4232616255e10000000a155106/frameset.htm|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/3b/505a4232616255e10000000a155106/frameset.htm]
Check if it is one of the described tables, e.g. XI_AF_MSG, that causes most of the growth. If not you should in any case find out/ give information what objects are growing so fast.
The QZDASOINIT jobs cover the database access of your application.

  • Unusual disk writing in Parallels

Just upgraded to ML from Lion. Now every time I do something in a Windows 7 programme in Parallels 7 (latest version), something gets written to my hard drive (according to Activity Monitor, Parallels Desktop is the process responsible for the writing). I went back to Lion from a clone backup, re-updated Parallels. Everything OK. Updated Windows. Everything OK. Re-installed ML. The problem returned. This version of Parallels is supposed to be compatible with ML, but I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

The unusual part is something being written to disk every few seconds. I don't know what is being written or to where. It's the why I'm concerned about. Problems related to this issue have been reported on the Parallels forum and seem to be associated with coherence. A workaround is to exit coherence or to use programmes in Desktop 1. So I can now at least work without so much disk activity, but a fix would be better than a workaround. The problem seems to be with Parallels rather than with ML, so hopefully a fix will be forthcoming.
