Xserve as file server

Hey guys,
We're considering putting an xserve in charge of our all windows network as DC. Should be no probs, my question is in regards to storage.
The HD modules for the xserve are expensive so I'm looking at a cheaper storage solution. Maybe a linux box choc-a-bloc with HD's.
How would xserve go about administering the shares, talking to the linux box?
Cheers
  Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Sorry my question may have been a little ambiguous.
We plan to admnister user accounts with the xserve. How would the user accounts on an xserve and the linux machine work together? Would we need to make the same account on each machine? Would it be a mess?
Cheers.

  • G4 Xserve as File Server..

I have a G4 Xserve that I want to use for a file server. Can anyone point me in the right direction to start this process. I need to know it all I am not familiar about setting this up but it needs to be done soon. I don't know if I can do it using OS X or do I need the server edition of osX. If anyone could please help I would appreciate it.

The XServe will come with a full version of Mac OS X Server, so you're set as far as the software is concerned.
The biggest issue is which version of Mac OS X Server is on the box.
The actual process for configuring and running a file server has changed over the years and the specific instructions will depend on the version you're running.
If it's running an old version, you might consider upgrading it to the latest. It'll be easier to setup and manage not only because Apple have improved the software over time, but also because there are far more people familiar with the current OS version than there are who can remember the older ones.
Personally, for example, I can help on 10.5 and 10.4. 10.3 gets a little fuzzy (well, OK, a lot fuzzy) and I can't even remember how to spell 10.2...

  • Newbie XServe Question - File Server

    Hi,
I recently purchased XServe. I will be using it mostly as a file server for my Macs in our LAN. It is working fine for this service. Is there some way to safely access these same user files remotely via the internet while on the road ?
Could someone point me in the direction to find a solution for doing this ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Art.

Tod, thank you for your answer.
My XServe will have a fixed private IP 192.168.0.11 and will be behind a Linux firewall that has two NICs (one public to the internet and one private to our LAN). I have complete access to this firewall so port forwarding should not be a problem. A few questions:
    1. What ports do I have to forward to my XServe's IP in order to have multiple users access their files ?
    2. What software should my remote users have for this remote access on their Mac Laptops ?
    3. What service should I activate in the XServe to grant access to these remote users ?
    4. Where can I find documentation on how to do this on the Server Side ? On the client side ?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

  • Decommissioned a file server, but every mobile account in the place is still trying to connect to it on login!

A couple of months ago we decommissioned the 10.4.11 xserve that was serving as our LDAP server and home directory server for mobile accounts.  We migrated all of that to a newer 10.6.8 xserve.  It was a fairly rough migration, but we've pretty much sorted it out except for one last annoyance: when you look at System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items for all of our mobile accounts, every single client is still trying to mount an afp share on the old server.  Logging in takes FOREVER because the connection needs to time out, so now my users are no longer logging out/in as often as they should, and so their Home Sync's are getting old.
When you go to the client's Preferences, the line referencing the old server share is still there, but the minus sign is greyed out so the item cannot be deleted.
The Kind is listed as "unknown" and there is a grey warning triangle next to it.
This is clearly some sort of template/Preference that is hardcoded to the old name, and whatever file this is got moved to the new server (which has a different name and different numeric IP address.)  Because even the BRAND NEW users that I have created since after "pdc04.hgbc.com" disappeared are trying to log in to the non-existent share on the non-existent server, too!
I have tried running grep on the entire disk on one of the clients looking for the string "pdc04", and updated everything that I found using vi directly on the files.  I have tried running grep on select directory trees on the new file server looking for pdc04.  In my grep on the client, I found the string in
         /Library/Managed Preferences/user/loginwindow.plist
         /Library/Managed Preferences/user/complete.plist
but searching all of the logingwindow.plist and complete.plist files on the new server comes up with nothing.
Does anyone have any idea where the template or preference or plist is on the server so that I can delete or update the file with the new host name?

I think that Grant is on the right track -- but the problem is that whatever file that pdc04's Server Manager wrote into is not available to pdc's Server Manager to edit or even display.
We upgraded mostly by turning off the G5 10.4 xserve and unplugging the fiber-channel RAID (with user accounts on it) and plugging the RAID into a fiber-channel card on the new (to us) Nehalem 10.6 xserve, which we did after using Migration Assistant between the machines.  Then we had various and sundry problems, and we ended up moving all of the mobile account directories to the internal RAID on the new server.
Clearly there is a file somewhere that acts as a template for mobile accounts and it refers to the old machine but its been moved to the new machine.
Only two of the mobile accounts have directories in the /Library/Managed Preferences folder.  One of them, ironically, is mine, and my account hasn't worked right since we went to the new server.

  • Can you set a max size for a folder on a file server

I've got a G5 Xserve that I'm using as a file server running 10.3.9. I need more space on my array so I bought bigger drives and will move the data to the new, larger array.
For the health of my drives, I want my array to maintain at least 10% free space so I would like for the people using the shares to only see 90% of the larger space. (I don't want to have to be the 'drive space' policeman 6 months from now when the RAID fills up again)
I know I could create 2 partitions in diskutil but I'd like something more dynamic.
Ideally I'd like to put my shared folders inside of a main folder and tell Server to only display 90% of the size of the partition when a folder from the partition is mounted remotely. That way people won't know there is a quota which keeps them from trying to copy data into a share that shows 10% free space.
The shares are used by both macs and PCs so I'd rather not go with a solution based upon network protocol.
    Many Thanks,
    Paul
    G5 Xserve   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There's no way I'm aware of to artificially display a different capacity/available space than what's actually there. If it's a 1TB volume, it's a 1TB volume and the OS isn't going to report that as 900GB.
The only other solutions I can think of is to either enable quotas which will let you restrict the amount of disk space any user can consume, or attach a folder action to the volume where the script automatically checks the volume size whenever new files are added and takes action at the appropriate time (you need to define what that action is, though).

  • Using Time Machine to backup a production file server

Does anyone have any recommendations for using Time Machine to back up a production file server? Right now we have an Xserve G5 with two internal 750GB drives in a RAID1 as our main file share to about 25 users, and a large external FW800 Guardian MAXimus drive to hold our backups. Our current backup system is a custom-written version of Mike Rubel's backup system -- http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ -- incremental backups done with rsync and cp with hardlinks exec'd via crontab, which seems to be very similar to what Time Machine does. Unfortunately, I've been finding it difficult to find any tech specs on Time Machine as far as:
    * CPU and IO priority - This is a production file server, so I'd prefer to keep this from sucking power performance from the users. Just how much CPU, and more importantly IO, should I expect it to eat?
    * How often it does a backup - The best answer I've found is "always", but I wanted to know if there was a more concrete response for this. Does the system hook into the kernel to see whenever a file gets written out so it doesn't have to continually scan the entire drive?
    * Command line restoration - Are there any good utilities for recovering via SSH, or am I going to have to VNC to the server and do the BS magic flying screen just to restore a file?

For mine I have 3x500GB drives in the server, two are RAID mirror and the third is time machine backup. I just turned on time machine in system preferences and set the backup drive, and after an hour it made the first backup.
Seems to work perfectly although I have heard a couple of rumours that the mail server causes the backup to grow forever, but havnt checked this. Im staging another machine, so perhaps will try this to make sure!
I am expecting the backup will only be useful to a system administrator, and am not sure how a user logged into a shared directory account (i.e 'roaming profile') would access the backup, and somehow suspect they wont be able to just seamlessly use the slick interface as if the backup were their own.
On a 2x2Ghz G5 it didnt seem to use the full load on either the CPU or the disk the first time it was run (copied at about 9MB/sec throughout). The incremental backups are very fast, and are often completed before I realise they have started. I gather it uses Apple's own spotlight API to find changed files, so isnt like an rsync which scans entire volumes. Worth checking the exclusion filters though, no point backing up any large cache/log files you may be storing.

  • Illustrator 16 and File Server

    Dear All,
All my files are on XServe 10.7.5, and I have 6 MacPro 2009 on a 1000BT network (2 GB on the server)
    3 MacPros Under 10.6.8 and 3 MacPros under 10.7.5.
    I have the following problem:
    With CS6:
    - on a MacPro 10.6.8, I work on a file, make changes and save it on the server-> OK
    - just after, on a MacPro 10.7.5, I open the same file, I make changes, copy it and want to close without save the file. I press cmd+w and Illustrator closes the file without any windows, and it saves the changes! If I open again the same file, make the same things, when I press cmd+w, the right windows appears and asks me i f I want to save, discard or escape...
With CS5, no problem to work.
    Any idea?
    Thx
    Stéphane

    Hello,
    Yes, I know, but:
    1:
    - it works perfectly with CS5
    - do you know any solution to work on many files, on differents computers, and many times by days, without any risk of duplicate file?
    2:
I don't want to save as, I just want Illustrator doesn't save the file
I don't understand what is the problem to work on a file server if speed access are similar to a disk. The file is exactly the same, no ?
    Thx

  • Securely setting Up a Web/ File server

I was just placed into managing my companies new xServe and had a few questions that I would not mind a second opinion on.
The Servers primary role will be a file server, iCal server and sharing a company wide address book.
The secondary role would be a backup web server for a few websites that are hosted outside, but have been known to go down from time to time.
Currently we have a firewall/ router that manages DHCP with none-routable internal IPs. We also have a 4 port cable modem that is used for our static IPs (we have 5 static IPs) Right now we are only using one IP for the router.
    My Idea:
Plug one NIC into the cable modem giving it a real IP, then lock it down with the servers software firewall to port 80. Plug the other into our switch that sits behind the firewall. The thought was that if you wanted to use the file server or administer the server you would need to use the VPN, but the outside could still use the web services.
I am no security expert and linking the two networks together via the server kinda sounds like a bad idea... any thoughts?

    NFS
Share a directory from your server using the command share. For example:
    # To share the directory /store to all users in the network, use:
share -o ro=host1:host2:host3... -d "My first share" /storeThe previous command will share the directory /store only to the computers listed as host1:host2:host3.... No other computer will have access. You can check the entire share usage with man share.
From your client computer, assuming Solaris, issue the command:
mount -o ro,soft,bg host:/store /mnt/net/remove_host/store The use of option bg prevents the mount to hang during system startup if the remote computer is not accessible.
In your vfstab, use something like:
    swap    -       /tmp    tmpfs   -       yes     -
    wgtsinf01:/store - /store nfs - yes bg

  • Intel Xserve with Leopard Server 10.5.5 won't let me in via login

A power outage appears to have created some issues with my intel Xserve, running Leopard server 10.5.5
The System identifier light was blinking, so I booted up from the Leopard disk and found out that my mirrored internal array needed to be rebuilt. No problem, 4 hours later, I repair permissions on the mirrored internal array, everything gets "repaired". Change bootup disk to the internal 10.5.5 mirrored array and reboot. System Identifier light stopped blinking, things were looking good.
The login screen comes up and when I put in the admin username and password, the screen does the shake of the wrong login.
What's weird is, on my laptop I can use Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, and the screen sharing for the server....with the admin username and password.
So, I figure, perhaps the mirror rebuild requires me to reset the admin password. So, boot back up from the Leopard Server install DVD, run the password utility. and reset the main account password.
I change the boot drive back to the internal mirror, same thing. I'm stuck. I can't get past the login screen on the actually server....or via the screen sharing...and Server Monitor appears to be stuck at 'waiting for response'. I can, again, use Server Admin and Workgroup Manager on my laptop and make changes to the X server software....but I can't log into the X serve.
My webpage, wiki, etc....are all serving fine. But, I'd like to be able to figure out what I'm doing wrong...log back in and run super duper, etc.
    Help...please...

Spent all day with apple support. They said it sounded like the LADP database was corrupted. They had me try to login as root, via an opendir account, etc. No luck.
So, they suggested I do a fresh install of the Leopard server on an external drive. Did that. They then suggested I use my laptop and the workgroup manager app to log in to the xserver, export users, groups and computers....and to copy over the library/collaboration folder to the external "clean install" of Leopard server.
Did that and followed the instructions to "relink" the metadata.plist files in each group, to the GUID to the groups in workgroup manager. First issue, they weren't different GUID strings.
Well, that didn't work...kept getting file not found error. When trying to access the domain.com/groups/groupname...it should've asked for authentication. And let me into that wiki...but no, apache error page.
So, they had me create a new "test" group....added a user. Start and stopped the web...etc. This didn't create a new wiki entry (when we replaced my custom index.html to the default index where groups/wikis/blogs populate automatically at the main). And, there's no new "test" folder in the library/collaboration files.
They then said "well, it must be because you don't have reverse DNS configured right, that's why the new wikis won't set up". I've contacted dyndns.com...but I don't think that's the problem.
So, I've rebooted my xserver to the internal drive. The wiki and blog is still there, still accessible the way I like....I still can't login to the xserver.
So, I'm wondering, if anyone knows a way I can boot up my xserve in the target drive mode, hook up my laptop and replace / swap whatever admin files so that when I boot up my xserve, I can login again.
There has to be a way to hard fix a hidden file? Replace a DB? Some awesome terminal command to get me in and fix the admin account / password....
Or, does anyone know if the reverse DNS issue applecare cites is legit? Doesn't make sense how, the same public ip and domain name, that's worked for some time...suddenly doesn't???
I'm hoping someone can help me.

  • Connect OS9 to OSX 10.6.2 File Server

I'm trying to connect my OS9 computer to my Xserve running OSX Server 10.6.2 to access files (via AFP).
I've taken a look around the discussion forums, and have found that 10.6 Snow Leopard no longer supports AFP connections from computers running Mac OS 10.2 or earlier. (verified: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3055)
I was wondering if there were any workarounds that any of you can/have come up with.

If you didn't understand the above posts, it means you can't connect your 9.2 OS to 10.6.2 Server OS. You have to get your client (9.2 OS) make it a Share Piont (Share it to others on the network) & get your server (10.6.2 Server OS) to connect to the the client. Thus you will have to store every thing on the 9.2 computer & copy it from the client to the server, from the servers GUI (you will have to be siting at the server to copy/access every thing). This makes no sense & solves very few problems!
Yeah I have the same problem. I have to administrate A hybrid network of Mac's & PC's. Lots of customised (In-house) software, some of witch will only run under OS 9.2 or earlier. Thus I have to be able to Share under AFP compatible with old versions. I had read some where that you could do it if you upgraded AppleShare to 3.8.8 But alas; that didn't work for me. I wanted to consolidate all of the share points into one/Two Array's. I guess anyone who also find them selves in this predicament could always find a old third-party piece of software like "Dave Classic" by "Thursby Software", that allows old Mac's to connect to Windows Networks. But I think I will just Use a third-party piece of hardware Like A "Thecus 5200" to Share afp to legacy computers, & in the end have a slightly more complex back-up strategy using Nsync, & use a little more power than necessary.
P.S. "Apple, I can understand why you have publicly stopped supporting such old systems, but why have you made it impossible for Mac supporters to do so with out using third-party products?"

I connect my xserver to m$ AD and use acl's - this seems to work fine until recently. I have started to use the acl's to deny permissions to certain directories. Now i seem to constantly get apple file server errors and it randomly kicks everyone off the server every morning - if i restart all will work until the following morning.

    Rik,
Unfortunately, I and several others have this issue as well. Apple has been notified, and all requests for updates result in "there is no new information at this time". 10.5.7 did not fix the issue for me.
The only "fix" that someone I know has had is to remove the "deny all" acl from all the share points/directories. Apple has been notified of this "fix" and considers it an "unacceptable workaround".
At this point, a few of us are working to escalate, but considering we notified them months ago about this, I have little hope this'll get fixed before 10.6. =(
Please do keep us posted if you figure out anything.
btw, here's my old thread on this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8857952
None of the solutions posted helped, what-so-ever.

  • Backup / File Serving Plan - Your comments?

A local business would like to have a daily off-site backup, with incremental backups, and do file sharing from a single server across several users. Web based backup is probably not realistic as some files are 250 megs a pop. We have ordered an XSserve with three 750gig drives which we will use as a file server. My plan is to use Drive 1 for system files, with Drive 2 and 3 setup in Raid 1 for data files that will be mirrored. This will allow the owner to simply pull a drive out, put it in a case, and take it home with him each evening, while providing redundancy and up-time if a drive goes down.
It doesn't, however, ensure that if somebody deletes 200 pages from a document and mistakenly saves it, there will be any archived copy, so we will continue to use our current Retrospect backup plan, with some changes to frequency.
My current thinking with regard to the System files is to connect an external Hard Drive after the intitial setup has been finalized with the users added and use SuperDuper to clone the System hard drive and then disconnect it (after a verfifying boot from it). Backing up of that drive would be done manually when needed after adding users or doing updates that are verified to be "good" while not automatically backing up corrupted prefs or other problems that can tend to creep into a system.
    Any thoughts or comments ?

My plan is to use Drive 1 for system files, with Drive 2
and 3 setup in Raid 1 for data files that will be mirrored.
This will allow the owner to simply pull a drive out, put it
in a case, and take it home with him each evening, while
providing redundancy and up-time if a drive goes down.
I'll be the contrarian on this one. Yes, it will work. Just fine (but see below). That's standard practice for many servers if you need them to be kept up 24/7, and a RAID 1 mirror split is the ONLY way to do an instantaneous clone of a drive. Other solutions (SuperDuper!, CCC, etc.) scan the disk, build a list, and copy files, such that any files that change/disappear/appear during or after the scan and before the copy will be missed. We do exactly that (well, not quite) with our Xserve G5 before doing any software update.
However, the approach we use is to add a spare drive to the mirror, allow the mirror to rebuild, then split the spare drive from the mirror. We use SoftRAID, and it has worked flawlessly for this (again, see below), and there is even a write-up on the SoftRAID web site (http://www.softraid.com) about this approach.
Realize, though, that such a mirror split has two issues. First, it is not a backup and it should not be confused with such. No archiving is done for old files, and it's not possible to go back weeks/months to get an inadvertently deleted file. A proper backup strategy (we use Retrospect to tape in an autoloader) is necessary for that.
Second, even though the mirror split is instantaneous, it still might not give a proper bootable image. Some programs, such as database programs (e.g., cyrus for email) maintain sets of files on disk that need to be consistent, and there needs to be (and is not) coordination between the instant of mirror split and all running services. For this reason, we shut down essential services (this can be scripted) such as email service, prior to the instant of mirror split, do the mirror split, then restart the services. Doing that avoids, for example, cyrus database corruption.
As mentioned above, we only do this for our OS volume, which is RAID 1 (SoftRAID) with mirror secondary being a RAID 5 LUN on an Apple Hardware RAID card and with mirror primary being a Seagate Cheetah attached to an ATTO UL4D. We add another mirror secondary (a Firewire drive) to the RAID 1 mirror, allow the mirror to rebuild, shut services by scripting, split the Firewire drive from the SoftRAID mirror, restart the services. Takes only an instant, gives a good bootable OS copy. Note that we only use this approach prior to any software change on the Xserve, allows us to roll back if the software change/update goes badly, as happened once. But that's all we use it for. We count on the RAID 5 LUN for our user data, plus our daily tape backups, to handle failures and accidental deletions, and we count on the RAID 1 mirror of the OS volume to handle failure of the Apple Hardware RAID card (which MUST have the write cache turned off - there is a bug in the card - fails to fully flush write cache on graceful power down - doubt Apple will ever fix this bug) and also to improve performance of the OS volume.
SoftRAID 3.5 is not scriptable, so this has to be done manually. I understand that scriptability is in the works, which would allow us to automate the process. SoftRAID 3.5.1 also has some issues with intel processors, the SoftRAID 3.6 beta just released resolves those issues (general release of SoftRAID 3.6 is expected shortly before MacWorld).
One thing for you to think about is all the handling/removal/insertion of the drive, and transporting the drive home each night. That will reduce the life of the drive and of the ADM connector into which the drive plugs.
I note upon re-reading your post that you use Retrospect, as do we. Be sure, before doing the mirror split (if you use this technique for your OS volume) that you disable Retrospect's schedule prior to the mirror split and then re-enable the schedule after the split. Otherwise, if you later try to boot from the earlier mirror split drive, all scripts with intervening scheduled times will be runnable and, just at the instant you are in a moment of crisis, trying to boot your precious backup copy, Retrospect will be firing off backups, etc. Been there, done that.
    Good luck.

  • New intel Xserve with Leopard Server setup assistance....

    Hello
Im quite a newbie when it comes to administrating OS X Server, Xserves and RAID's so please bare with me if the following question seems obvious or dumb...
Currently I have inherited the following setup - G5 Xserve running 10.4.10 Server which has the following services running = Kerio MailServer, AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, NAT, OD, VPN and Windows. This Xserve is also connected to an Apple RAID via fibre channel for file sharing and also to a Tape multi-changer backup unit via scsi.
I have just bought a new Intel Xserve and have installed 10.5 Server on it. I have this server as I would like to get iCal Server and Directory up and running and eventually share some of the G5 services. For iCal Server and Directory I assume ill need the 10.5 Server set up as Open Directory Master but my worry is I have that already on my G5 Xserve. If I was to migrate the 25 usernames from there to the 10.5 Server, would every user still be able to connect to the RAID (as the RAID is still physically connected to the G5 Xserve) for file sharing?
I hope some one could advise or recommend a better way, let me know if you need me to try and clarify the question better!
    Thanks in advance

  • Configure EP6SP9 KM in a file server instead of KM Database

    Hi All,
We are at EP6SP9 in Windows 2003.
As a part of my user requirment, I need to set up all my KM folders in a file repository and not in KM Database. The users would view this folders as KM Folders and need to utilise all the facilities offered by KM like Versioning, subscription and notification.
I need to also integrate the central ADS Server as the user management engine (Windows Authentication) so that all the users automatically logon to the portal when they log-on to the system.TREX also has to index through this documents in the file server.
Need some advice on the same.
    1) I have seen a document entitled "Integration of Windows File Services into SAP KM Platform using SSO and WebDAV Repository Manager". Is this the one that I have to use for setting the system up or any other suggestions. Has anyone tried connecting KM to an file server Database.
    2) Can I utilise all the KM Functionalities with the documents and folders residing in a file server.
Would love to interact with anyone who has worked on the same.
    Regards,
    Rajan.K

There's already lots of information on the subject right here on SDN. Here are a few pointers to get you started:
CM repository documentation in SAP Help:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/62/468698a8e611d5993600508b6b8b11/content.htm
Weblog with step-by-step instructions on creating an FSDB repository:
Creating a CM Repository Manager - FSDB
I basically just followed the weblog and it worked. In fact, some steps in the weblog are not necessary if you intend to use the default "documents" repository. In that case, just switch to FSDB persistence mode, add your network paths and it should work after restarting the engine.
Note that the contents of your repository will be deleted once you switch unless you backup your files to the FSDB root prior to that.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to mirror file server?

I run a small office network with Mac OS X Server 10.4.x doing various services including AFP. My wife and I also work from home and we would like to be able to access remotely various files which are held on the server.
We can do this over the internet, but the connections are not too quick. Ideally I would like to be able to run a mirrored copy of the file server on a little server at home, so that we can access the files locally and then have the servers keep each other up to date across the internet.
    Is this possible?
    TIA
    James

Can anybody help me with this?
    TIA
