XServe RAID disks not showing up in Disk Utility

I have a new (to me) xServe RAID box and I'm stuck, the stays lights are green the fiber link light is green on the RAID and not lit on the PCI card but shows up as green in the fiber link section of the settings tool but the RAID array doesn't show up in Disk Utility so I can't format the drives.
I set up the disks as Enhanced JBOD using RAIDadmin and I've deleted and created it a couple of times, I'm just not sure what else I should try, I've read the manual but. Can't find any suggestions of what's going wrong.
Thanks

Port 1: Link Established
2Gps
Point to point
Status light green
In the system Profiler I'm not sure what you're asking for, I'm running 10.5.8 standard not server.
the fibre channel shows link established 2Gps and cable type copper but nothing else, the disks & RAID controller don't show up anywhere I've looked.
RAID Admin shows the JBOD disks as online and lists the LUNs etc.
System looks fine, only error is missing second power supply.

  • Physical disk not showing up in Disk Utility

I'm in the process of selling my mac mini.
I went to the disk utility and erased per the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065
The only thing I did differently was I adjusted the security settings to do a pass of writing zeroes.
Then I went to reinstall OS X per the instructions and there was no drive available on the "select the disk where you want to install os x" screen.
I tried to do a restore from backup and got the same symptom - no disk to restore to. Also doesn't show when I go to choose a startup disk.
I went back to the Disk Utility and noticed some weirdness:
    - The Macintosh HD logical volume is showing in the upper left, but there's no physical disk showing as its parent! See attached screenshot - I can repair and verify the logical volume without any problems. It also says that the volume is online and has 1.1 TB as it should.
I've also tried resetting the NVRAM and PRAM, with no luck
    Any help is much appreciated!!!

    Hi PabloHoney1979,
When I check my Mac I see the same Macintosh HD, Logical Volume Group with an indented partition under it. So it looks like you are looking at the physical disk without a partition on it.  Try the Partition tab and create a partition on the drive.
Disk Utility 12.x: Partition a disk
    3.  In the Mac OS X Utilities window, select Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
    4.  Select the disk that you want to partition and click Partition.
    5.  Choose the number of partitions from the Volume Scheme pop-up menu.
    6.  Click each partition and type a name for it, choose a format, and type a size. You can also drag the divider between the partitions to change their sizes. If a partition’s name has an asterisk beside it, it’s shown larger than its actual size in order to display its name clearly.
    7.  If you’ll be using a partition as a Mac OS X startup disk, click Options, and choose the the GUID partition scheme.
    8.  Click Apply.
    Take care,
    Nubz

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

  • Western Digital drive not showing up in disk utility--Help please.

Hello all. This is my first post. I am having trouble with my WD 500GB external hard drive. It is not showing up in disk utility when connected either via the firewire or USB ports. I purchased the drive about 8months ago, brought it home and set it up as my Time Machine backup drive. It worked great for several months, until it got full. Then it stopped showing up on the desktop for no apparent reason. I discovered through reading support documents on the Apple web site that when I set the drive up initially I should have changed the partitioning protocol from master boot record to GUID, but I did not. I followed the apple web site instructions for making the change expos facto, but was instructed to press buttons that were "grayed out". As such, I couldn't do it. Perhaps foolishly, I thought that I would just start all over by reinitializing it, formatting it correctly (with my new found knowledge) and then do the time machine backup fresh. However, the drive no longer shows up in disk utility no matter how or in what order I connect it. When the drive is connected by firewire there is evidence of some recognition of the drive in system profiler, but it is listed as "External HDD Buttons and Lights". There is also evidence of the My Book showing up at a minimal level (eg. the firmware revision and a few other details are listed). On the front of the drive is a ring of blue lights that progress in a clockwise direction as soon as a connection is made via either firewire or USB. Before that it is solid blue. I have read through all the info that I can find on this site, and all the suggestions require the drive being recognized in disk utility. Without that, I am stuck. I know this must be a solvable problem, because the drive just a bucket of parts before it was manufactured. I just don't know enough to solve the problem or even know what qeustion to ask. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.

If you can't boot from an OSX DVD, it sounds bad. Yet I think you said you were running Disk Utility from the DVD?
I got an external Firewire drive enclosure for 2.5 inch IDE drives from Other World Computing (OWC)
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MOTGFW400/ but similar items are available from many vendors like Newegg. About $60 for the basic model. More money can buy additional interfaces on the enclosure like FW800 and USB2; an AC adapter instead of letting the firewire bus power the drive (usually OK).

  • Windows based WD external hard drive not showing up in Disk Utility to reformat to Mac... how can I erase the drive

We have a WD external harddrive previously used with a PC that we want to completely erase and reformat for use with our iMac desktop for use with Time Machine.  The drive shows up on the desktop of the Mac, but it does not show up in Disk Utlity, assuming because it's Windows format.  Outside of the standard "erase" feature in Disk Utility, is there any way to reformat this drive for Mac OS X?  Or how can I get this drive to show up in Disk Utility?  Note: The drive functions properly, has power, and we are able to view its current contents through the desktop icon, so it is a working drive.  And we are ok with losing all the current data on the drive.

Hmm strange, I had just moved my external Lacie drive from my windows machine to my iMac and it was showing up in disk utility still formatted fat32 or whatever. I would disconnect the drive and restart the machine then replug the drive and try again.
Also not that it will make a difference ( I dont think it will but hey why not ) try accessing disk utility from the install disk?

  • How to setup a guest network when the dialogue boxes do not show up in AirPort Utility 6.1

How do I setup a guest network when the dialogue boxes do not show up in AirPort Utility 6.1?
I see screenshots where there are boxes to 'enable' guest network but these simply do not apear on the Wireless tab in AirPort Utility

I now have a guest account, thanks to you!
I did the factory reset and was able to set up the guest account.
There were 3 problems, all of which I was able to solve.
The first problem was connect to Ethernet, which I selected by WAN port, as shown in the first screen shot. This page used to read just Ethernet and the Bridge Mode.
The second problem was whether to share a range of addresses or share a public IP address. I selected share a public IP address as shown in the first screen shot. I had tried the range of IP addresses in my earlier attempts, the ones that failed. Hopefully this will have no effect.
I have forgotten what the third problem was - only excuse is a few too many flavored drinks. I didn't have any problems solving it though.
What is really weird is I can log on to Guest and use on my iPad (first generation), my wife's iPod Touch (third generation), and my wife's 2011 MacBook Pro. I can't log onto Guest on my 2008 iMac, even after a restart. I get the image below.
Since I don't lug my iMac around a lot and it is connected by Ethernet, while my little make it right brain says figure this out, I am not going to worry about it.
Thank you again for your time and patience in helping me solve this.

  • Mac Pro 4,1 w/RAID startup disk not showing

Just purchased used a 2009 Mac Pro which came without installation disks. The startup (and only) HD does not show on the desktop. I discovered that an Apple RAID card was installed and had one disk (the startup disk) connected to it. Apparently the startup disk had been part of a RAID from which all other disks had been removed. Can I simply remove the startup disk from the RAID and install it as a regular drive? Since I don't have the installation disks I don't want to experiment with it until I make a clone. As of now there is only the single drive installed in the system. The system seems to be fine as reported by Tech Tool Pro test suite, which indicated no problems with any component.
The battery on the RAID card needs charging but after several hours did not seem to be going anywhere. Can the battery be replaced?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Do either of you guys have an idea as to why the startup HD does not appear on the desktop? The battery no is indicating fully charged in RAID Utility but it's still conditioning, so I strongly suspect It needs replacement. Still, I'd like to solve this before pulling the card since I'm unfamiliar with the Mac Pro and if I can get things functioning nominally through menu operations so much the better.
There seems to be an anomaly in the RAID Utility setup since no "RAID SETS" nor "VOLUMES" are listed, but there is an HD icon labeled "Bay1" listed under "DRIVES" with State=JBOD, SMART=verified, Status=Good, Interface=SATA. It's a Western Digital Caviar. The RAID Utility help says that only a single drive can be RAID mode JBOD, but if this drive's status is JBOD doesn't that imply that a JBOD RAID set had to have been created before adding the drive to the set and thereby giving it JBOD status? IF this is so then the RAID set must have been intentioally deleted, or perhaps was auto deleted when other drives were pulled. I'm thinking that the drive does not show on the desktop because it still has status JBOD but it's RAID set is gone. Possible? If so, can I create a new JBOD RAID set and assign the drive to it without loosing the OS on the drive? Can I install a new drive without assigning it to a RAID set and then reinstall after pulling the card or will things get messed up if a disk that was once on the RAID card is reinstalled after the card is pulled?
    Thanks for any insights.

  • Xserve RAID volume corruption, volumes missing in Disk Utility

I have an Xserve with 3 drives in a RAID 5 set. The RAID set is divided into 2 volumes. After hard booting the server to recover from a crash, the volumes seemed to disappear.
We booted to an install disk and ran Disk Utility, which showed that there were no volumes at all. We then ran RAID Utility, which showed the volumes there.
After the RAID ran a re-initialization and verify, RAID Utility shows green lights throughout, as if everything is fine. Nothing else, however, can see the volumes.
We booted to an external drive with OS X installed, and basically found the same situation. Only RAID Utility can see those volumes, but otherwise they're just plain missing. However, RAID Utility does show "Partitions: None" for both of those volumes.
We have tried placing the drives into another server to determine if the problem is with the RAID card, but we had the same results. I also tried booting to target disk mode, but the other machine can't see the volumes all the same.
Using an external boot disk, we upgraded the RAID firmware. We also reset the SMC, as well as the PRAM. Nothing is working so far.
AppleCare basically told me that we're SOL and have to rebuild. Unfortunately, there is some data there which was overlooked in our backup procedure. If there is any possibility of recovering the data, I'd like to try it before giving up.
My absolute last option is to recreate the volumes exactly as they were before, then hope that I can use some manner of un-erase to recover the data. However, I'm not sure how RAID works on that level, should it just jumble the data, or if this is even remotely a feasible option.

  • Unallocated disk space not showing up in disk management

I have an HP Proliant dl 380 running Windows 2008. My c:\drive was built on a 33 gig raid 1 partition. I am almost out of drive space. I have tried this method before on Windows server 2000 and it worked. However this time it did not. I took one
of the 33 gig drives out and put a 146 gig drive in it's place. I let the mirror rebuild itself. When it was done I put the other 146 gig drive in and let it rebuild. Now I still have the 33 gig partition but when I ran disk management
the unallocated space did not show up so I cannot extend the volume. I tried to rescan the drives and have device manager rescan as well but no go. I talked with hp and they had me update the firmware of the raid card and restart but still nothing.

  • Raided xserve raid boot volume, OK to run disk utility?

I have been asked to assist another site in our organization, and they have an older g5 xserve and xserve raid. They have the xserve booting off a raided boot volume on the xserve raid (2 drives in a raid 1 config)
They have started having some issues, so I thought I would check the obvious stuff first (i.e. disk util > repair drives)....Just wanted to check here first and make sure that I can SAFELY run disk util on a raided boot volume that is hosted on the xserve raid...
also, does anyone know if diskwarrior will also work in this config? (again, safety being an issue)
    Thanks in advance...

Yes, you can run Disk Utility to check the disk, or Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro and any other tool that checks the HD.
That is the point of RAID, it changes nothing of what an OS understands of a HD. If there are any problems and the drive/data is somehow 'lost' it is not due to RAID.
Safety would expect that you ahve a backup of this drive already, so running a disk check would only enhance and not reduce your safety by confirming reliability.

  • External Hard drive does not show up on Disk Utility

I have a External Hard Drive that I used to use on a PC.
Recently, I just bought a new Macbook Pro 13'' and want to transfer my documents from the old PC to the Macbook.
My External HD requires a password that you need to type in in order to access the files.
This password thing runs smoothly on my PC, which I can type in my password and get the files. But when I plugged it into the Mac, it didn't recognize it. It only shows the files .exe... and other that can be run by Windows.
So I formatted the HD (I already back up the data), and put it back to the Macbook, I still cannot open it. The system does recognize the connection but when I opened the Disk Utility while still connecting to the HD, the HD does not show on the left column of the Disk Utility.
    Then I'm stuck.
Is there anyone here can tell me what I can/should do?
A girl who spends hours on the internet and still cannot figure out why this sh*t is happening to her.

A lot of external drives use firmware passwords as a protection scheme.  To use them on a mac, you need to unlock the drive on a PC (I've done it in a virutal machine before).  Once unlocked, you can format the drive for use on a mac.  The firmware won't run properly on a mac so your ability to lock the drive from the mac will be gone.  You can still lock it from a PC (I think, never tried to firmware lock a drive with a mac partition on it).
