XSL/Fo to PDF using Servlet

Hi all!
I want to to write a servlet which should convert a XSL/FO /XML file to a PDF format..i tried to do so.. but i am getting this error.. and i added the relevent Jars..please help in this regard.thanks in advance..
SRVE0026E: [Servlet Error]-[com.foptest.FopServlet]: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.apache.fop.apps.Fop: method <init>(Ljava/lang/String;Lorg/apache/fop/apps/FOUserAgent;Ljava/io/OutputStream;)V not found

Hi Shah H
Thank you for your answer !
Well, how can I explain you more in detail ?
After the standard give me the Data to show it with an SAP Script Form (OTF structure) I have found a way how to convert them into a XML structure.
Together with a XSL file than we pass the file to a print system. There they print the forms.
In the same time to this we want to look also the form at the screen.
To guarantee that we see the same result as from the print screen we also want to create the PDF from the same source. That means from the XML and XSL files. So to convert them to a PDF file  I think I must go outside the system.
Now, I have read that as you also mention this is possible thru Apache project or cocoon.
But how exactly must this be configured I never have done this before:
- On with transaction in SAP can this be configured ?
- Which customizing must be done ?
Are this explanations comprehensible for you ?
Thanks in advantage
Sandro

  • Cache file(pdf) in user's browser using Servlet -Cookie, or Session

    How can I save a file (pdf) in the cache of a browser (IE 6) in a user's computer? I am using Servlet and Tomcat 4.1.24. PDF file is sitting in server (remote computer) under a URL space.
    The idea is to NOT to download the pdf file on user's computer (from the remote server) if the user has a cached copy of the pdf file and pdf file in the server is the same as the pdf file in the browser. If cached pdf is different from pdf in browser, or, if the user does not have that pdf file in cache, then download pdf file from the server.
    Can I come up with a way to use Cookie class? Cookie class does not have an API which will let me save a file in it. I could have saved the pdf file in the Cookie with 999999999 setMaxAge. Is storing that pdf file in session the only choice? I do not see session serving my purpose - session should not be valid for a longgg duration e.g. week or month.
    Also, how would I create a file whne I am given a URL to that file.
    URL fileInServer = new URL("http://www.myDomain.com/myWebApp/PDF/my.pdf);
    URLConnection conn = fileInServer.openConnection();
    Does getContent() help and what are the steps after that?
    Any help with the source code will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sam

    I am NOT creating this PDF file on the fly. This pdf file is sitting in the server (remote machine) under URL e.g. http://10.10.10.xxx:8081/myApp/PDF/my.pdf
    I need to check if this pdf file is in the cache in user's computer (differnt machine than the server) and if the cached pdf is the same as the pdf in the server. If that file is not in the cache, or if they are not the same, then, I need to save the pdf file from the server into user's browser cache.
    I am writing all that code in Servlet. I can save the file in session. I do NOT know how else can I cache the file, other than saving it in session. I can not think of any setHeader() which will let me save a file in user's browser cache. Headers like If-Modified-Since are of no help, as it does not let me compare file in browser cache with the file in server.
    Also, how would I create a file, given a URL to that file.
    URL fileInServer = new URL("http://www.myDomain.com/myWebApp/PDF/my.pdf");
    URLConnection conn = fileInServer.openConnection();
    Do I use getContent()? What are the steps after that?
    Thanks,
    Sam

  • Converting .DOC, .XSL filo to PDF

    Hi all,
    currently I am looking for a Java API which would be able to convert DOC and XSL files to PDF file + adding bookmark information into both files also. I am not interested in solutions using hidden instances of some applications like Jacob (using MS Word instance) or OpenOffice SDK (using OpenOffice.org appl.) as it is the problem I am trying to avoid.
    Thanks a lot for any advice.
    Frank
    P.S.: I am a newie in here so I hope I didn't "do" anything against rules... :)

    You can not. the best you can do is use something like POI to give an approx. render of the page, and spit it out to PDF, or using a native word view, and script it in some way to print to a PDF.

  • How can I use Servlets on Sun Java System WebServer 6.1

    Hi
    This is Khurram,
    I have just downloaded, and installed "Sun One Java System Web Server 6.1" on WindowsXP. This is installed and working properly on my system. But I want to use Servlet technology on this server, even I did download it just for working on servlets. Before it, I was using typical JavaWebServer2.0 for this purpose.
    Any ways.
    Can any one tell me, how can I do this on "Java System Web Server 6.1".
    Thanks
    any help will be appriciated
    regards
    Khurram

    Thanks for your such action.
    Actually I have installed it since 2 days, and have read throughly the documentation of WebServer, But Only the Link for this purpose is provided "Programmer's Guide to Web Applications", Now I have just searched for it and found only "Programmer's Guide" .PDF format. I have just read it out now, But here also provided a small refference to see "Programmer's Guide to Web Applications". Now I have just the problem that where to find it.
    Please, tell me if you have some solution to my problem
    or atleast tell me where to find the refference "Programmer's Guide to Web Applications". I tried but only found "Programmer's Guide" for Sun Web Server 6.1.
    Thanks any way to give some time.
    Khurram

    Kris,
    I placed the three jar files into the $ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/home/default-web-app/WEB-INF/lib directory (recall that I don't have a oc4j directory) and I changed the library entries in the application.xml file to point to this directory. The htmldb_pdf.js now seems to find the jar files but I now get an error that indicates I'm not able to make a connection:

    QUESTIONS:
    1. Should I place all jar files in the $ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/home/default-web-app/WEB-INF/lib directory . . . there are several jar files that are not referenced in the application.xml file.
    2. Should the port number that is defined in the htmldb_pdf.js and htmldb_fop_render.jsp files be the HTTP Server Listener port.
    Thanks,

  • Problem exporting crystal PDF using printoutputController.export method

    Has anyone used PrintOutputController().export() method in ReportClientdocument to export Crystal PDF report to a JavaIOStream. I am getting an error when I try to export it using this method. The error I get is unable to connect RAS.rptappsrver followed by classcast unable to export to IXMLSerializable. Here is the code I am using.
    Is there some setting I need to enable on the server to use the export function or any other idea will be appreciated?

    Here is the answer. After getting ReportClientDoc from factory we need to set the DatabaseController userid and password (if report on Crystal server is accessing oracle database as datasource). In addition we need to set parameters on the ReportClientDoc for reports and subreports before doing the the export.
    Here is snippet of code: The code below is used to get ReportClientDocument and export it as PDF using bytestream.
    /* Code for getting report client document */
    private static synchronized ReportClientDocument getReportClientDocument() throws Exception
             int count = 3;
             ReportClientDocument rpt = null;
             while (count > 0 && rpt == null)
                  try
                       if (_enterpriseSession == null)
                            ISessionMgr _sessionMgr = CrystalEnterprise.getSessionMgr();
                            _enterpriseSession = _sessionMgr.logon(CRYSTAL_USERID, CRYSTAL_PASSWORD, CRYSTAL_SERVER, CRYSTAL_AUTH);
                             LOG.info("Successful Logging into Crystal Server: " + CRYSTAL_SERVER);
                             _reportAppFactory = (IReportAppFactory)_enterpriseSession.getService("", "RASReportFactory");
                             _infoStore = (IInfoStore)_enterpriseSession.getService("InfoStore");
                             IInfoObjects result = _infoStore.query("Select SI_ID, SI_NAME From CI_INFOOBJECTS Where SI_NAME = '" + CRYSTAL_REPORT_NAME + "' And SI_INSTANCE = 0");
                             IInfoObject infoObject = (IInfoObject)result.get(0);
                             _reportId = infoObject.getID();
                             LOG.info("Located Report Id on Crystal Server: "+_reportId);
                        LOG.info("Created or found CR session");

  • Generate multiple PDFs using FOP

    Hello,
    please take a look to the following code snipplet it is intended for the generation of a PDF document. The PDF-content is written to an OutputStream which works quite well.
    The problem is that I want to append some more PDF content to the OutpuStream, but these seams to be impossible. Is there anybody who merged several PDF-Streams to one "big OutputStream" ?
    try
    driver.setOutputStream(pdf);
    //Setup XSLT
    TransformerFactory factory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
    Transformer transformer = factory.newTransformer(new StreamSource(xslt));
    //Setup input for XSLT transformation
    Source src = new StreamSource(xml);
    //Resulting SAX events (the generated FO) must be piped through to FOP
    Result res = new SAXResult(driver.getContentHandler());
    //Start XSLT transformation and FOP processing
    transformer.transform(src, res);
    System.out.println("first transformation...");
    finally
    pdf.close();
    }

    Hang on, your thread title suggests you want to generate multiple PDF documents from a single xml source, but the text is talking about combining pdf content.
    I'm not sure which one you really want so I'll the first one.
    I've recently had to generate multiple pdf documents from a single xml source. I used the following (hoping the tags render okay):
                   <xsl:result-document href="{$filename}" format="html">
                        <!-- document root here -->
                        <fo:root xmlns:fo="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Format">
                             <xsl:call-template name="masterSet"/>
                             <!-- Apply the ID template to this instance of the ID element -->
                             <xsl:apply-templates select="."/>
                        </fo:root>
                   </xsl:result-document>I used the Saxon engine to split the xml into multiple .fo documents and then ran FOP over each of these.
    The 'xsl:result-document href="{$filename}" format="html"' element does the splitting. Obviously, the filename variable defines the path to the outpute file. You'll no doubt define that within some kind of for-each loop.

  • Serving PDF using IE

    NOTE: This is not a question but rather a thread for solutions to this problem. I hope that someone who is having this same problem in the future can find this information useful. If you have a solution you would like to share then post it here.
    I have been having the same problem that many have been having with generating PDF files and returning to IE client. I have read through the many suggestions on how to do this using Java here in these forums and on the web and never really found a direct solution to my problem.
    The basic advice that I have seen pretty much everywhere holds true. You must set the content type and the content length without exception. Some say you need to set the content disposition but I have not seen the need for this--it may only apply in special situations I have not yet encountered.
    The problem I had was trying to serve PDFs using a struts based framework. This required my URL to look something like (http://localhost/app/report/view.do?jobId=1234567890), where /report/view mapped to an action and jobId was the report job identifier. Using the classic code below in a Struts Action fails miserably to view or save the generated PDF with an error indicating IE failed to communicate with the server.
    // load pdfbytes here
    response.setContentType("application/pdf");
    response.setContentLength(pdfbytes.length);
    ServletOutputStream ouputStream = response.getOutputStream();
    ouputStream.write(pdfbytes, 0, pdfbytes.length);
    ouputStream.flush();
    ouputStream.close();I tried many variations with the response such as changing the buffer size, setting content disposition, changing Acrobat preferences among others and nothing worked.
    During my search on the web I found an article that indicated IE violates HTTP in that it defines it's own way for determining the content of a URL rather than using the response header. I believe Microsoft's web site says this is by design and not a flaw. The article also indicated that the workaround was to use Microsoft extensions. (I cannot find the article again, if I could I would post a link to it).
    With this new information in hand I decided to create a test servlet that would serve an existing PDF from the local file system. The following are snippets from web.xml and the PdfReportViewServlet:
    <servlet>
       <servlet-name>pdf</servlet-name>
       <display-name>PDF Report View Servlet</display-name>
       <description>Used to serve PDF reports to client once they are completed running.</description>
       <servlet-class>report.PdfReportViewServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
       <servlet-name>pdf</servlet-name>
       <url-pattern>*.pdf</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    public class PdfReportViewServlet extends HttpServlet {
       public void service(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
       throws IOException, ServletException {
          // Read in PDF test file
          File l_file = new File("c:/temp/test.pdf");
          FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(l_file);
          int length = in.available();
          byte[] pdfbytes = new byte[length];
          in.read(pdfbytes);
          in.close();
          // Send response
          response.setContentType("application/pdf");
          response.setContentLength(pdfbytes.length);
          ServletOutputStream ouputStream = response.getOutputStream();
          ouputStream.write(pdfbytes, 0, pdfbytes.length);
          ouputStream.flush();
          ouputStream.close();
    }Basically anything ending in "pdf" will be handled by the servlet. After deploying this code to Tomcat and typing in a test URL like (http://localhost/APP/test.pdf) it works!
    I then decided to see what would happen if I changed the PDF extension from "pdf" to something else to determine if IE was using the "pdf" extension in the URI or using the content type to determine the true content (At least to prove it in my mind). I changed the following in web.xml:
    <servlet-mapping>
       <servlet-name>pdf</servlet-name>
       <url-pattern>*.rpt</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>     Now the servlet will handle anything ending in "rpt" but will still return PDF content. The result was a bunch of gibberish that was the PDF file converted into text and displayed in IE. IE must be using the file extension in the URI to identify the content type.
    Just for fun I decided to try not setting the content length to see what would happen. I reverted the web.xml file back to map to "*.pdf" and commented out the line to set content length:
          // Send response
          response.setContentType("application/pdf");
          // response.setContentLength(pdfbytes.length);
          ServletOutputStream ouputStream = response.getOutputStream();
          ouputStream.write(pdfbytes, 0, pdfbytes.length);
          ouputStream.flush();
          ouputStream.close();The darn thing worked! So I guess IE doesn't care about content length.
    Hmmmm, do I even need to set the content type? I commented out the line to set content type and.....
    it worked!
    So my new servlet code looks like this and works fine:
          // Send response
          ServletOutputStream ouputStream = response.getOutputStream();
          ouputStream.write(pdfbytes, 0, pdfbytes.length);
          ouputStream.flush();
          ouputStream.close();Of course in my production code I will be setting content type and length because other browsers that correctly implement HTTP will require it unlike IE, at least I think they require it until future testing proves otherwise.
    In conclusion, it seems that IE uses the URI to determine the content type rather than using the response header. So if you want IE to correctly recognize the content type of any target you better use the approriate extension in the URI rather than depend on the response header content type.
    BTW: I was using Tomcat 5.0.14, IE 6 SP1, Win2k Pro SP4, and Acrobat 6. I have not tested this using different configurations. When I have the time I will try and perform more extensive testing.

    That's great. Now try doing a POST to your URL and see if IE still likes it. Or use HTTPS. Or both POST and HTTPS. Or use GET with a really long URL and watch IE crash (This one is probably a buffer overrun). Then try those various combinations on different versions of IE with all the various patches, etc. I've given up and I just tell people to download Firefox.

  • Why we use servlets

    Hi everyone,
    My question may sounds stupid but what I can't uderstand is that why should I use servlets when I can use simple java classes in JSP files. For example, I can include my java classe in JSP page for database handling, why would I ever use a servlet for the same purpose?

    Whereas the JSP scenario might work in this situation, real servlets can come in useful in other cases.
    If you use velocity engine to generate the pages, the page contents do not need to be put into jsp's.
    If you provide binary output (image, PDF etc.), servlets are better.
    Servlets can be used to build frameworks etc.

  • Open Jasper Report in new page using servlet

    Guys,
    Looks very simple but i am having problem making this process work. I am using 11.1.1.4
    This is my use case:
    - From a employee page, user clicks on a menu item to open report for current employee. I need to pass appropriate report parameters to servlet and open report into new page.
    I can successfully call servlet using commandmenuitem and set request parameters and call servlet from backing bean.... but that doesn't open report in a new page.... any way i can do this?
    Another option i tried was that using gomenuitem and setting target=blank but in that case i need to pass the parameter using servlet url which i like to avoid.(in case i need to pass many parameters in future) (also values will be set on page so i need to generate url when then click the menuitem...... so there are some hoops and loops i need to go through) I don't know a way to pass the request parameter using backing bean to servlet... i don't think it is possible.
    Those are the two approaches i tried.
    If you have any better approach...I would appreciate if you can let me know. (i have searched on internet for two days now.... for the solution)

  • Print to PDF - using Snow Leopard (Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose

    i have a PDF form that i created that is used as a custom proposal that my company sends out to potential clients. the form in its editable state is only used internally. we recently upgraded to snow leopard, but prior to the upgrade, we were able to fill the custom proposal form out using adobe reader, and, as you well know, we weren't able to save that edited document as a PDF with the custom form fields filled out. our work around using adobe reader was to print to a pdf using the adobe pdf printer in the printer dialog. with the addition of snow leopard, however, instead of choosing the adobe pdf printer, we were to choose PDF from the bottom left corner, then Save As PDF, and it would spit out an uneditable pdf that then allowed us to email it to the potential client without them being able to edit it as well as have an internal, digital copy for our records instead of having lots of paper floating around (i know this is also doable using security that disallows the client certain editing privileges, but printing to a pdf is much quicker and more efficient, and the pdf security isn't really that secure at its best).
    in any case, i came across this gem of a post here on the support forums that installs another option from the PDF drop down on the bottom left of the print dialog menu that reads Save As Adobe PDF and is supposed to do exactly what i am trying to get it to do...print to a pdf file from adobe reader.

    once i updated to acrobat 9.2 (as the link above suggests 9.1), however, the Save As Adobe PDF does appear in the print dialog menu, but it still gives me the same error that acrobat 8 - 9 gave me while using Snow Leopard — Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save — and as i've already explained, you can't save an edited pdf form in reader (as i am the only one in the office with acrobat) and still keep the fields as you've entered them in. the only work around is to print to a pdf but is apparently having some recent problems.
    using acrobat, however, i know that i can save the editable pdf as a new file with the fields customized as i have left them, but it still saves it as an editable pdf and the print to a pdf option still remains the best option...that way we have digital copies internally that are uneditable that can be printed at any time or emailed to the client.
    how can i do print to a pdf, based on what i've written above, using snow leopard and acrobat and reader?

    A simple way is to flatten the form fields, which converts the field appearances to regular page contents. You can do this with JavaScript or PDF Optimizer (Advanced > PDF Optimizer > Discard Objects > Flatten form fields). A very nice script that adds a custom menu item can be found here: http://www.uvsar.com/projects/acrobat/flattener/

    Is there a way to define target window when redirecting within frames using servlets?
    How to do it in JSP as well?

    Your servlet (or JSP) can't decide where it is going to be displayed. The browser has already decided that when it makes the request to your servlet.
