Yet another AVI question

......but this one is a bit different...My avi files play just fine....
Im running OS9 on a G3 MT with QT 5pro and DIVX 5. About a week ago i did some HD cleaning (always trouble) and i dont know what i did, but now, mpg files, and the like, autoplay, run, and close completely nomal, but when i open an avi file, it comes up as "untitled", it will not autoplay, and when closed, it asks me if i want to save changes that i never made....again, only with avi files....
basicly driving me nuts...
I did not mess with QT prefs or extentions, cleaning only what i felt was old, harmless stuff...QT player prefs are set to "autoplay movies automaticly when opened"
I am a longtime, intellegent mac user but this really has me stumped...
any ideas are appreciated, and upgrading is not an option..
thanks
  Mac OS 9.2.x

Oh, also, Im posting this in Desktop Environments rather than laptops because a) I done so in the wrong tab and b) The solution is for CLI and X c) And Im doing the same thing for my desktop. Mostly a).

  • Yet Another Workflow Question

Ok I too, like many others here, am new to the Mac (thanks to Apple's I'm a Mac, I'm a PC ads that my wife couldn't get enough of). I have done some searching around and I see that there are quite a few iMovie workflow questions out there. I have not quite found what I am looking for however, so I thought I would make my first post tonight. So here it goes...
I have 3 different ways I capture video:
    1. Canon Vixia HF10 (HD)
    2. Canon Powershot (SD)
    3. Blackberry Storm (SD...I know it isn't a good phone)
I record everything to SD cards. I am wanting to know the best way to store my raw video for editing at any time. Do I copy the AVCHD file structure (for the Vixia) and .avi files (for the other non HD) to my hdd, or do I just import into iMovie '09 and let it reside there, or both? I noticed that iMovie had an archival option (which appears to just copy the AVCHD structure to my hdd), which is why I ask. I want to always keep my raw video in case I decide to go back later and create a new video.
After I have the raw video archived, I would like to know the best way to use iMovie. Depending on where I end up storing the raw video, should I keep the imported video in iMovie once I am finished with a project, and then reimport it at a later date if need be? Or, do I leave it in iMovie as events? I guess this all rely depends on the first question...where do I store the raw video for archival purposes...
Finally, when exporting my iMovie project, should I store that in more of a, pardon the Windows reference, "My Videos" folder with a original size, web optimized size, and ipod optimized size? Thus, keeping the actual exported version of the project separate from the raw video?
I hope I have asked the right questions here. I appreciate any and all help I can get!
    Ron

Welcome Ron to the  iMovie boards..
very interesting : 'switchers' care sooo much for 'storage strategies' ..
the by Apple intended workflow/concept for iApps is:
any 'photocam' related material (still or movin') comes-in via iPhoto, and is stored in an iP Library (=you can tell iP to create 2/many Libs, if you prefer to organize manually....)
any 'camcorder' related material HAS to be imported by iM - why? because, iM has some internal routines to make such material editable (codecs, thumnails, stuff....). the same material as 'file by Finder' does not import.. in most cases!
    storage..
iP stores in its Library (local/internal HDD and/or ext. HDD)
iM stores in Events (local/internal HDD and/or ext. HDD)
to make Projects/Albums accessible to any iApp, you should keep your fingers off that structure.
    Erasing Events 'kills' projects.
allthough, once 'shared to media browser' there's a 'copy' of your project WITHIN the project file. (= the socalled Media Browser is no single Folder somewhere hidden in the system)
there's this Spacesaver feature to erase any Event content which is not in use in any project to keep Events lean.
use the Archive feature from within iM to keep things easy and convenient.. if you miss a single file of the SDcard file-structure, the whole card's content is kaputt ..
    summary:
    • use iApps as intended.
    • use iP for cameras, it stores 'raws' (the avi too)
    • use iM for camcorders, use Archive to store raws..
    • purchase a dozend of HDDs to store your material..

  • Yet another standby question...

    Hi gurus,
Please help to resolve the quiz. I have completed manual physical standby installation. It is up and running. I then decided to install Grid Control and to use Data Guard for the standby creation. I've successfully installed GC, deployed all agents, I can see my previous standbys, life is good in short. Now, when I am trying to create the second standby for my production database using the Data Guard I stuck on a logical question:
On the step 3 of Data Guard standby creation, there is a note, saying:
The instance name (also referred to as the SID) must be unique on the standby host.
Yeah, fair enough. But i can't understand what should I do next? I have:
    db_name YELLOW - primary prod
    db_name YELLOW - standby prod 1st
    and i need db_name YELLOW - standby 2nd
But I can't create it on the same server where the first standby resides.. What options do I have? Do I need to create the second standby on another server? Do I need to kill 1st standby? Is there any way to avoid this conflict? I am confused. I have no equipment for TWO standby servers... I thought I can install there up to 9 standbys.. But it seems to be a problem.. And definitely, I cannot give my second standby other name than YELLOW as all my applications are strongly tied on db_name...
Friends, please clarify this if you can. I am kinda lost in here..
    Thanks as usual,
    Maria

    well, that's a good question! :)
because I don't have spare server for the standby. the question is not about: 'should I or should not put more than one standbys in one server' , but more about: 'is there any way to put two standbys with the identical db_names in one server'. I know that I probably sound unprofessional, but I just wanna know.. If the answer is 'no way', I will kill the first standby then and recreate the second one using DG with the correct name.
    Thanks for writing to me,
    M.

  • Yet another CENTERing question

Yes, I've looked through tons of the centering questions
already posted here, but couldn't find precisely what I need to do.
Basically, I'd like to have the center section a fixed (or minimum)
width and the two side sections liquid. I know how to do this with
tables, but am learning CSS (have built a couple sites already) and
would like to do this in CSS. There must be a way!
Here's the comp of the layout:

I'd like those edges to expand with the browser window and
the center section to remain in the center regardless of window
    size, does that make sense?
    Help!

  • Yet another .avi import thread...

I've been doing this for years, on all kinds of software, and I'm stumped.
Old .avi files - GSpot says they are RAW l420 and no codec is required. PE9 will not import them.
One is small, about a 10 minute clip, and I opened in in QT, File>Save, and PE9 imports it just fine when it's an .mov. The other is 2 hours, QT will only load the audio, and exports same, which PE9 accepts, but does me no good.
So, after converting to .avi, .mov, and .wmv, I still can't get the 2 hour video to import. I've used QT, Nero, VLC, Movie Maker to try to make it save as something PE9 likes, but I can't find it. The closest I came was getting a VLC export out which VLC played as video only, and Nero played as audio only.
Any ideas? Re-capping the original is not an option, this VHS tape walked years ago.
    Thanks,
    Jim

SUPER finished, making a 26 GB .avi into a 110 MB .avi. Video is just black and audio is silent, but it does open and play...2 hours of black silence.
    SUPER settings:
    AVI-DV-mp3.
    Video settings: 720x480 3:2 29.97 29040 HiQ and Stretch.
    Audio: 44100 2 channels 96kbps default.

  • Yet another photo question -- better to stream or sync?

I plan to purchase an ATV this weekend and need help choosing between the 40 and 160 models. Though I've read dozens of posts, I'm still confused whether streaming or syncing photos will work best for me. My understanding is that I will only need the 40GB if I stream (ignoring other HD uses).
My photo setup: I currently have about 10,000 pix stored on a NAS drive and add to them weekly. My itunes runs on a PC (sorry) and I manage photos with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.(I do not have Photoshop Elements). Network is hardwire 100MB.
    My goals:
    1. To view my pix on ATV with the least additional workflow relative to my current habit of downloading and managing images in Lightroom (i.e. need to transfer or rename files to view them in ATV, etc.)
    2. To have the best possible viewing performance (i.e. no lag, easy to find pix, etc.)
    3. Spend as little as possible (i.e. no new software, 40HDD)
How does streaming compare to syncing given my needs?
    What size drive?
Thanks in advance for the help. Sorry if the answer is obvious.
    Ken

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
In most cases setting up your itunes as a syncing or primary library is a better option, it gives you much more functionality. What you should remember is that even in the role as a primary library you do not need to sync all your content as you have the option with a primary library of syncing or streaming your content.
This doesn't apply to photos though, so if you set itunes up as a primary library you must sync your photos, if you set it up as a secondary library you can only stream them.
Question to ask yourself is how many of the photos will you want on the tv, I have about 14,000 photos but only have about 4,500 on the tv. Many of my photos were taken on digital cameras as far back as 1995 when photo file size was quite small hence I have about 4 GB of photos on the tv.
I sync very little else and 4 of my 5 tv's are 40 GB and the other tv doesn't really have anything different on. You do use a little space for temporary storage of purchases and rentals you make via the tv, but I rarely ever have more than 10 GB of such content at any one time.

  • Yet another ramdisk question

What I am trying to achieve is to load the system  into ram, then turn off the hard-disk: ( hdparm -Y ). I want to do this in the hope to extend battery time. I want to make it in a way that I can choose between normal and powersave mode during boot up ( grub ). In the powersave mode I would only use the console ( no X ), mostly programming, ircing, nothing memory/cpu intensive. I thought about mounting a usb-pen drive where I can save my work, and during boot, i could resync the work directory with the hdd. I have 2gb of ram, which I think is enough to handle the task. I only need help in how to set up the system to run in ram, the other stuff i can figure out. If anyone have done something similar or you can help me reply. Thanks.

When I raised a question on the www.linuxquestions.org forum about offloading some apps into RAM, one of the moderators suggested that I take a look at how Puppy Linux works. You might want to look into this. Apparently Puppy Linux can load itself entirely into RAM with each session, then copies critical data, including your configuration files, onto your hard drive when you shut down.
You could play around with Puppy Linux to see how it works, and you could probably get some good ideas from the scripts that are used to do all this.

  • Yet another scripting question

Could some kind soul who understands bash scripting well enough explain to me a way to do the fallowing:
I have a directory containing video files, i'd like to convert ALL of them to mkv format with mencoder. The easiest way i can think of would be (if possible) using a small script that lists the contents of the DIR, then runs the command "vs" on each file. vs being an alias i setup for "mencoder -profile default"
Currently i have to do it manually like this:
    vs filename-01.avi -o filename-01.mkv
What i'd like to do is have a command or 2 that runs vs on each file one at a time, and has the -o option of the same filename but with mkv in place of avi,
Also can anyone reccomend a good book for learning this sort of thing? I plan on taking a bash scripting course soon, but its been pretty booked for the past few months.

I use that to extract mp3 from flv files, I think it can help you.
    # !/bin/sh
    for fichier in *.mp3.flv
    do
    ffmpeg -i "${fichier}" -f mp3 -vn -acodec copy "${fichier/.mp3.flv}".mp3
    rm -f "${fichier}"
    done
    exit 0
all my flv are name something.mp3.flv ,
I search for them, assign one to the "fichier" variable (file in french) and dump them to "${fichier/.mp3/flv}".mp3 --> this takes the original filename, cutting the .mp3.flv and replacing it by mp3, I delete the original, rinse and repeat.

  • Yet another Score Question

At the risk of overloading the usual kindly suspects with score questions, is there a simple method to easily convert an entire arrangement already done in 4/4 time (with 16ths feel) .. to 8ths over a cut time feel with double the number of bars?
Musicians in rehearsal yesterday said they would find it easier to be reading 8th notes over twice as many bars.

    Hallo spirit,
First: merge the regions per track (and count the number of bars of that merged region)
Second: Drag the end of the region until the region has the double lentgh while pressing the option key, confirm the dialog: stretch(shorten/lengthen)
Third: you may change the time signature in the time sig editor.
You're lucky that your track is in straight 4/4, otherwise you would loose your mind with logics handling of tim sig changes (sorry about that comment - please Apple, improve the time sig editor and global track!!)
    Cheers Eddie

  • YET ANOTHER SIMPLE QUESTION

Sorry i couldnt find the answer in the book, mainly because i didnt know where to look,
im writing a if statement and if the a counter is on a multiple of 8 i want to it to do a specail operation.
What is the symbol for a multiple of a number i thought it was & or ? but they dont work, any ideas?
    kelvin

Perhaps you have just jumped from the sea of C ..
But it doesn't work this way Java ... the expression to be evaluated has to give a result of boolean (true or false).
Way to help yourself here would be in 2 ways :-
    1) Go back to some basics .. do some reading (shudn't take more than
a hour) and would be fairly easy too.
    2) In this case, capture the output of C%8 in variable and then check the value of that variable (to be equal to 0) in the 'if' expression.
    Hope this helps ...

  • Yet another tubes question

Sorry again, but do the iPod Nano tubes feature any sort of indentation for the click wheel or are they just as inadequate at providing click wheel functionality as the various third-party products I have seen?
    Thank you for your time.

The nano Tubes have a thin layer protecting the clickwheel although the clickwheel can still be operated with this covering.

  • Yet Another Playability Question

Although I hate to add to the list:
Does anyone know whether there is any kind of software that can analyze a home-made disk (or image) to warn of potential playability problems (on players)?
Very seldom do I have any problems in the encoding or burning process (which is done separately at 1X speed). But if I distribute say, 10 copies, invariably 3 or 4 of the people I make them for will have trouble playing on their players. It won't be the same players each time either. I've also had disks that played fine at first - then would hang up a few months later played back on the same player.
I'm using Verbatim -R media and have even tried their archive quality, but without any improvement in the success rate.
Before I send them out, I try them on my computer and my two players, but that obviously isn't sufficient. So if there is some app available that would ID potential problems, I would get it unless it was prohibitively expensive. Thanks.

Ouch, a 70% success rate. I am not aware of a program that checks for potential DVD conflicts- it would be a near impossible data-base as new players come to the market. There is software that will analyze bit-rates and that may point out a potential problem I suppose if you notice you are getting bit-rate spikes on the DVD: http://www.digigami.com/mpressionist/
But here's the kicker, if it comes back with something then what are you going to do? Meaning are you doing this for friends and family? In which case I suggest that friends and family get different DVD player!!! In my experience, the cheapest thing Wal-Mart has will play anything I throw at it; it's the expensive players that are fussy. If you are doing this as a source of income, you need to upgrade to DVDSP (DVD Studio Pro) part of the Final Cut Suite. Why? DVDSP will allow you to control your bit-rate. As example, I never set an average bit rate above 7mbs. I usually never go above 6.5. And DVDSP will allow you to use compressed Dolby audio (iDVD uses uncompressed audio). Uncompressed audio will fight for bandwidth against your video. And compressed audio is what most players are "expecting" to see.
Besides stepping up the authoring, you could try a few things. First, keep all your assets consistent. If you are using iMovie as your editor, make sure all your video& audio is to the same specification. Don't mix an MP3 with an AIFF file, try to convert the asset prior to bringing it into iMovie. To further "equalize" the file, I would export out of iMovie as a self-contained DV movie- NOT a MPEG 4 or any other flavor of compressed movie ( a DV file will be 13GB/hour) and bring that file into iDVD. Once the disc image is created, burn at a middle of the road speed. If your media burn choices are 1x, 2x, 4x, then burn at 2x. If your choices are 4x, 6x, 8x then burn at 6x. The whole 1x burning arouse from earlier burners/media where burning at 1x was preferred. Now-a-days, the burners and the media are made to be faster and burning at the slowest speed may actually increase the number of burn errors thereby increasing the chance that some players may not play the disc. Keep in mind that all burning contains errors, and all players have error correction- we just want to keep the errors to a minimum.
    Hope something there helps,
    Mike

  • Yet another syncing question...

Hello. My wife and I have two separate accounts on the same computer, and I have set iCal to sync our calendars via .Mac. I was wondering what settings I should use in each account for syncing. I currently have the sync set to "automatic" in both accounts, but when, for example, I add an item to my calendar, it is not updating in her iCal. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I have the same setup as yourself and have not had any problems syncing iCal. I have the following setting on each account (using the same .mac account)
System Prefernces > Internet & Network > .Mac - go to sync tab and make sure Syncronize with .Mac is checked & that iCal is selected for both accounts. Also check that the frequency is the same (Such as everyday) - it could be a timing difference.
In iCal > preferences > General - make sure that syncronize using .mac is selected at bottom of page (cannot remember if this gets automatically selected by doing the 1st step or not).
Once verified that all settings are correct, I would add an event to your iCal and manually sync with .Mac - switch over to your wifes account and manually sync with .mac - hopefully that does the trick
    Good Luck
