Yosemite Mail performance problems

I upgraded to OS 10.10 Yosemite this morning. When I opened the new Mail application, I noticed some significant performance problems.
I organize all my emails by conversation (i.e., they display by thread), and I like to expand those conversations on occasion. However, whenever I choose the menu command to expand all conversations (View-->Expand All Conversations), there is a delay between 15-30 seconds for the conversations to expand.
Switching between mailboxes incurs a 2-3 second delay before the mailbox I'm switching to appears in the viewer pane.
Flagging and unflagging messages incurs a 10-15 second delay before the message is flagged or unflagged.
I tried the usual things to fix problems with Mail. All of my mailboxes have been rebuilt, and I also manually re-indexed my mailboxes. I'm running a MacBook Air with a  1.7 GHz Intel i7 processor with 4 GB of RAM. All my mailboxes are run on a Microsoft Exchange Server (which I realize might be the whole or part of the problem, though I didn't have any issues with any other OSX versions before).
So, my questions: is there a general performance problem with Mail in Yosemite? And if there is, will Apple release a fix?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Restart the computer. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. Any custom stationery that you created may be lost. Ask for instructions if you want to preserve that data. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Yosemite Performance Problem

    Hello,
I have a Macbrook Pro Retina (late 2013) running Yosemite (I updated using the Appstore) with a lot of performance problems :
I can't write a text without frame drops
Showing the notification center takes a long time than usual
Opening finder is a hard task to do, it keeps showing parts of the window
I have a problem with the heat of the Macbook Pro, it doesn't go below 50° even if I'm not running anything at all while the ram the used at 80% all the time.
I can't open mail and chrome at the same time, it makes the macbook completely useless
... I can't do what I'm supposed to do using this Macbook Pro anymore...
Do you think that everyone is having the same problem ? is there any solution to downgrade to Mavericks ? I hate unfinished software, I feel like I'm using A copy of Android or Windows on a Mac,
    Regards,
    Reda,

You have a botched installation probably due to a defective Mavericks installation that you updated. Since downgrading to Mavericks requires that you erase your hard drive, what you might try is to reinstall Yosemite using the Recovery HD:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Yosemite and mail - BIG problems with memory leak

Our small company has had significant problems since upgrading (?) to Yosemite, which by all we could glean from Apple would be a relatively bug free install. At random times, usually while composing an e-mail, the mail program will just spike in memory consumption, going from a couple hundred Mb of RAM consumption to over 70 Gb in just 3-5 minutes. This obviously causes the entire machine to come to a standstill and the mail process needs to be killed. A cascading problem is that when this happens any other programs will also become non-responsive, and they also will need to be killed, often at the loss of work. I've talked with the support people at Apple and disappointingly they seem to be unaware that this is an issue, or more likely they are aware of it (I mean, just do a search of "Yosemite mail memory" and see what you get) and want to downplay that the release has been a HUGE failure for MANY people. After about 20 of these application memory events since upgrading over this past weekend at our company I would like to see where Apple is on fixing this. BTW Apple, your user base is fairly sophisticated with computing, and having your online assistants continue to try and point the problem at the users - who are all having the EXACT SAME ISSUE - is alienating your user base. I've been using Apple for over 20 years and this is the worst release you've ever had. I think you're well on your way to becoming Microsoft in 1994, we need the old Apple company back.

I have the same problem and after a few days I am thinking seriously about abandoning Apple mail and .... going back to Outlook, I do not like MS, but may not have another option. Any suggestions.
I am amazed that Apple does not give any information about the problem. It does look like they are loosing their touch and appear to be following the Microsoft and Blackberry path.
Within a small company like mine, another few days of this and it will be impossible to keep it.
Hate to say it, but for the first timewith Apple I miss the old OS, it did not look as good but at least it worked..

  • Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail - any solutions?

I notice that Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail. After running for some hours, I noticed there were 6 emails in my Gmail account that had not synced over the past hour.
In the meanwhile, for safety's sake (don't want to miss emails!) I'm back to Mailplane. But I wonder if anybody knows of a solution to this long term problem first introduced in Mavericks. Works fine in iOS Mail though.
    Thanks,
    doug

I don't think we'll ever have a "best of both worlds" Doug. I've used Gmail since the week it launched the first beta in 2004, and it's always been a bit of a love-hate relationship for me (mostly love). With the demise of the Google Notifier for Mac, I went with Mailplane, but even it has problems. Like when I see my iPhone update with new mail and I'm looking at Mailplane and it won't update at times with even a forced refresh. I often have to close/reopen it to see new messages. But, it's hard to live without my Google Calendar only a tab click away, one of the primary reasons I use Mailplane, that plus changing view zoom sticks with Mailplane and won't with Gmail.
For years I've thought Gmail labels were the perfect filing solution, but over the past few weeks I've been analyzing just how much I really use that feature, and for me...it's not all that much. I think I could simplify my life by putting everything into appropriate folders (as in all other email apps). Apple doesn't realize just how much money they're losing by not allowing people to use private domains with iCloud mail...which I would do in a heartbeat just because it would work perfectly with Mail.app. I would pay even more than I currently pay Google for this solution with Google Apps Business. So, I'm actually on the verge of moving my private domain to the best email service I can find and then using it with Mail.app. The problem here, of course, is I'll lose the best spam control on the planet (Gmail). So, as you say, there simply is not a "best" solution for all these things. I'll at least try a new email service first with some other domain to see how I like it before moving my primary email.
Lastly, the other thing that incenses me is synching of flags between iOS and Apple Mail. It works fine between Gmail and iOS Mail, since all I care about is whether a message is starred/flagged or not.  But using Apple Mail, when I flag a message it will not show as flagged in their own iOS Mail, which is incomprehensible, given they built both apps.
If you find a great solution or discover anything new...please post it here, Doug. Thanks.

  • High processor use and blank messages in Yosemite mail

    Hello
I am noticing very high processor use from Yosemite Mail, and I am also having problems with blank messages.
Under Mavericks, I had a problem where I double click on a mail message to open it.  The message would flash on the screen for a moment and then disappear.  The message in my inbox would be marked as read.  I could then open it again and read it normally.  Over time, I tracked this down as having to do with Mail doing anything else when I requested to open the email.  For instance, if I delete a message and then immediately try to open the next message, the problem would occur.  If I waited 5 seconds or so, then opened the next message, the problem would not occur.
Now, under Yosemite, I find that if I open a message quickly after performing another task, the message window is blank and never fills in.  I can close that message window and open it again, it may work, or it may still be blank.  I have found where certain messages appear to be stuck and will open blank until I open a different message and then come back to the problem message.
I have also noticed that Mail under Yosemite appears to use very high percentages of processor time.   Checking the activity monitor, Mail is third behind WindowServer and kernel_task for processor usage.  And I have another question on the community about my system running hot with the fan spooling up and down constantly under Yosemite, something that almost never happened under any of the previous OS's going back to Snow Leopard.
Any idea what is going on with the Mail app in Yosemite?  I was excited about Mail finally advancing in capability, but it seems to have come at a cost.....  Come on Apple - Mail needs to catch up with Outlook!

I also have this problem since Yosemite upgrade. Infuriating because I can't just read incoming emails anymore. It seems to be specific to one email account and doesn't necessarily cause a problem with others. When this happens, (showing the content for a second then disappearing), there is a segmentation fault reported in the error log.
For me, this is a category one critical business problem. If I can't read and reply to incoming email reliably on my computer, I will need to switch to another system or device that can.
24/10/2014 14:51:34.839 com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent) The _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit key is not available on this platform.

Good news is that the email app does seem to work a bit quicker than before using Mavericks where it could hang for 10-20 seconds for no particular reason.
Hope this can be fixed or a workaround posted soon.

  • Performance problems with Leopard 10.5.1

    Hello,
I use an iMac 24 Alu 2,8Ghz and upgraded to Leopard. There are some major performance problems and bugs in the recent version of Leopard:
    1. While accessing USB devices, the display speed, windows moving, animations etc. slow down
    2. Adobe CS3 Photoshop 10.01 and Flash CS3 are sometimes extremly slow. I tried the recent demo packages from Adobe:
2.1. The Photoshop dialogue "save for web" slows down the system completly, and this problem stays when quitting Photoshop. A restart is neccessary then.
2.2. Flash CS3 movie preview is very slow and stuttering. It's so slow you cannot imagine how the real movie flow will be.
2.3. Recent Flash Player 9,0,115,0 with hardware acceleration enabled doesn't really work with QuartzGL enabled Leopard: The movies slow down a lot. Try www.neave.tv for example.
    3. Safari, Mail and other bundled software hang sometimes. You have to force quit them then. It doesn't matter whether QuartzGL is enabled or not. This especially happens to my system if it is online for some hours.
    4. A lot of Apple applications doesn't seem to work with 2dextreme enabled. Why this? Apple supporters told me in Leopard there will be a much better 2dextreme support. Also Quartz2dExtreme in OSX 10.4 worked with all applications and i guess it's the same feature like "QuartzGL" in Leopard. So Leopard isn't finished here. It would be nice if Apple could make it's own software QuartzGL compatible.
    5. Very often the desktop slows down or lags. This is the main reason I often still witch to Windows XP PC to do work in a faster, less annoying way.
    6. Safari crashes randomly sometimes. It is unstable still. Also it crashes more often if you resize/move the window a lot, so I guess it is a graphics extension-related problem.
I hope you people from Apple will fix these annoying points and optimize your new system in the next update release.
    Best regards

Thanks for you answer. I repaired in the way as described above. There were some errors, some file index was wrong (don't remember exactly the phrase), now the DU reports the partition was successfully repaired / the volume appears to be ok.
The crashes in Safari are gone, but all other described problems still exist. Adobe CS3 is not really usable for me.
By the way, in iMacSoftwareUpdate 1.3, which was replaced by OSX 10.5.1 update, there is one extension called AppleVADriver.kext that does not exist in the OSX 10.5.1 update. Is it an important extension?

  • Recently forced to update Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) from Mountain Lion to Yosemite. Performance is awful. Is there any way to change back/downgrade?

(Sorry if this isn't the correct category)
I have always been a fan of Apple and almost always love Firmware updates. OS X 10.9 and 10.10, however, I do not like.
I recently spent a lot of time going through all the troubleshooting steps Apple Support makes you go through before I called them to get my problems fixed as quickly as possible (no point wasting both our time). I had encountered scepticism in the past that maybe my problems were because I was running 10.8 and so to prove that it was in fact a hardware problem, I updated. AppleCare finally agreed to replace my logic board (for a second time) which fixed the performance problems I was having. The process took hours and I ended up being right the entire time.
I originally had my own little reasons for not wanting to update but decided I would try Yosemite since I didn't really have much of a choice at this point. I have now given it a good month and have concluded that this OS version is completely useless to me and near unusable.
A small list of the more annoying problems:
Photoshop crashes and/or needs restarting constantly
my Wacom Tablet doesn't function properly (or at all
my computer lags when I open Dashboard or App Exposé
I get the spinning beach ball for a good five seconds at times almost exclusively when using a feature of my computer such as Finder, Pages, iTunes, etc.
computer feels like it is lacking in specs
Additionally, there are a dozen little things about the way Yosemite behaves and looks that I find hard to ignore. I WOULD ignore these things if my software worked properly.
Yes, I did try reinstalling programs and drivers; no it didn't help.
I paid for a computer running Mountain Lion because I knew I could do my art on it, play the games I wanted, and do word processing the way I liked. Is there any way at all (no matter how long or difficult a process) to downgrade back to 10.8? And specifically without voiding my warranty?
I really don't want to be forced back to buying Windows but I spent a lot of money on something that is now not functioning in a way I can use it ):
    TL;DR
had 10.8. needed to update to 10.10 so AppleCare would believe that I had hardware problems. Hardware is now replaced and I need 10.8 back without voiding my warranty.

    GrandMasterB wrote:
My problem is the laptop came with Mountain Lion on it and I spent 2.5 DAYS in recovery trying to redownload the OS to install.
    snip
That took about an hour and after the recovery finally opened I was prompted with downloading "Lion" instead of "Mountain Lion" I proceeded. It installed overnight. Now my Macbook has Lion on it and the only way to get Mountain Lion back is in the App Store for $20....
This does not make much sense if the Laptop had Mountain Lion on it from new. Internet Recovery downloads the current version of the OS that the machine was built with, are you sure that you did not upgrade to ML from Lion?
If you did you can redownload Mountain Lion for no charge.

  • Seeburger EDI Adapter with terrible performance problems

    Hi,
we installed seeburger edi adapter on PI 7.1 and we have terrible performance problems:
We have a mail sender adapter polling a mail account.
Till the message is visible inside integration engine it takes sometimes 1-2 minutes or longer.
We already tuned the j2ee-engine and checked the DB-indexes (there are some OSS Notes) - no success.
We think that the problem is inside the DB-tables of Seeburger an that some indexes are missing (Oracle DB).
    Any ideas?
    Thanx
    regards
    Wolfgang Hummel

    Hi,
I think in PI 7.1 SAP installed their own Java-VM (compatible with Sun 1.5) - is it true?
Do you have the same performance problems inside the adapter?
The adapter is like a black hole and it take sometimes one hour till you can see a message inside the integration engine (sxmb_moni).
    Regards

  • Yosemite Mail displays image attachments as question marks if attachments also contain a pdf

We have 11 macs running Yosemity in our company and I have the following problem with Mail since upgrading.
If an email is created in Mail and both images (jpg) and pdf's are attached to that mail, the recipient will see the images displayed as question marks, but the pdf show as icon as it should. This is only on mac. Other clients see the attachments properly.
This also appears to be the case when receiving email from others using outlook. When the email contains both images (even in signatures) and pdf files, the images displays as question marks and the pdf display as icon or previewed as normal.
    Any suggestions?
Displaying remote images in HTML emails are ticked, but this is attached images, not remote images.
When sending the pdf only - displays correctly
When sending the images only - displays correctly

I found a solution here and it worked for me. It doesn't go back to old messages that are already in your inbox and correct the issue, but any new messages that come in will show images:

  • Images with embedded hyperlinks do not function in Yosemite Mail

    I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2 on a 2012 iMac.
I send out a newsletter with images and hyperlinks embedded in those images. You click on an image, and your browser takes to to a specified web location.
In Yosemite, Mail allows you to embed hyperlinks in an image... just highlight the image, press Command K and enter the link.
The link even shows up when you hover the mouse over the image, but...
No users of Yosemite that receive my newsletter can click on an image and activate the hyperlink.
This worked fine in other versions of OS X.
Any help here would be appreciated.
I'm at a loss to understand why one of the most important and basic programs in Apples OS X, has such a glaring flaw.
    Thanks
    John C

There is an issue with Cmd-K in Mail when used with certain URI, which may explain why some have not encountered a problem.
If the link you are pasting contains characters that need to be "escaped" (such as the hash, #), Cmd-K strips the escaped characters, and replaces them with the naked character.
    Cmd-K converts
    this 'escaped' link:  http://foo.com/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fMapping+Audit+%232
into:  http://foo.com/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=/Mapping+Audit+#2. Because # is a reserved character in the attributes, and is no longer escaped, the link will fail.
Directly pasting the escaped link into Mail, without using Cmd-K, will work fine. But that won't help if you want to add a link to an image or other text.
Best to change the the name of the linked item, if possible, so it does not use a reserved character.

  • Maverick Mail Printing Problem: prints email header on separate page from body of email.  Why?!

Maverick Mail Printing Problem: prints email header on separate page from body of email.  Why?!

For what it's worth, I can report exactly the same problem.  I just recently converted from Outlook for Mac 2011 to Mail.  I did the conversion while running Yosemite.  I like pretty much everything about Mail EXCEPT that it take 2 pages to print a 1 page email!!  The header appears on the top of p.1, followed by a blank space.  The message begins at the top of p.2.
If you scale it down, you can get the message to begin to appear on the bottom of p.1, but clearly, Mail is inserting BIG SPACE between the header and the message.  Changing the display fonts for Mail had no apparent effect (except that the font DID change, of course)....still a BIG SPACE between the header and the message.
Coming to Mail for the first time, I would have assumed that this was just a quirk of Mail, but am I understanding that some of you Mail users out there USED TO NOT have this problem??  I think it's pretty clear that it's Mail that's causing the problem, not the message, because I went over to my old Outlook and printed the same couple of messages with no such space between the header and the message.  So Mail is inserting a space into the print formatted email message that is NOT there in Outlook's print formatted same message.
Be really nice to get rid of this problem, but my Apple Care free support has expired.  Not sure I want to pay for something that's generic to Mail!!  Anyone else made any progress on this?

  • Yosemite Mail crashes multiple times a day

Has anyone else been running into Yosemite Mail app crashing often, like multiple times a day? It leaves crash dumps you can get to via Console app. Most dump filenames end with cpu_resource.diag, some with just .crash or .hang.
I just installed Yosemite a few days ago clean on new disk and then used migration assistant from a Mountain Lion system. I'm on a Mac Pro 2008 with 16GB ram. Also happening, but to a lessor degree on my wife's Mail app under Yosemite on a Mac Pro 2010 with 32GB ram. Both are latest 10.10.2. This didn't happen in Mountain Lion. Have not added nor deleted any mail accounts since moving to Yosemite.
I've rebuilt the Envelope Index files in <user>/Library/Mail/V2/MailData a couple times already but does not help.
The cpu_resource.diag dumps look like Python is going deep into some recursion and then the system is killing off Mail. Luckily in all the crashes, Mail has already saved the email i was working on almost to the last word.
It has crashed when i was editing an email and it has crashed when i was using another app and all the Mail app windows just disappeared.
I just turned on send stats and data to Apple and developers hoping the repeated crashes will get seen at apple.
Anyone solve this? Any clues are most appreciated.
    Peace,
    Dan

    Hi Linc,
I've seen your name before on support threads that have helped. Thanks.
I've been a unix systems engineer since late 70s, just so you can tailor your responses or not to be concerned if you have something very technical for me to do. Also a iOS developer, network, software and hardware engineer.

    Things to know.
There were hundreds of pairs of the lines "GSSAPI Error:" followed by "Failed to start the SASL connection" before above extract which were identical except of course for the time log entry part.
Personal info changed to protect the innocent or whatever.
MAIL.HOSTNAME.COM is anonymized from my own Mac OS X Server Mavericks on local network that is dual homed DNS setup.
Below is the entire crash log that is referenced in last line of console grab above. Looks like a bug in the JS JIT compiler maybe? But that wouldn't jib with the log entries that are about SSL errors. Now that i see the SSL errors and it is to my server, i might try a reboot of my Mavericks server. But i will wait until i hear back since perhaps there is something else to try on Mac OS X Server to see if fixes this problem. Most likely not though, since there are a bunch of "hang" and "resource" crash logs too, all in the system area; crash logs in my user lib area are all "crash" type and looking at a few have different failures.
No more human text below dashed line below.

  • Yosemite Mail Imap and Gmail

Since upgrading to Yosemite, Mail has been constantly synching with the gmail server - it may stop for a moment but starts right back up. I know this because I have the Activity window open. Consequently there is often a significant lag between clicking Send on a new message and it being sent, or new messages being downloaded.
    I've:
Zapped Pram, repaired permissions, disk is ok, Deleted the account, deleted all the accounts, rebooted, rebuilt mailboxes, everything I've read online in the last 2 weeks.
The only odd message I see in Console is the following and there is one for each folder.
implementation_added_client : failed to add client for path /Users/stoner/Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]/Vendors.mbox/CDW-MacWarehouse.mbox/60263398-70AA-40D0-A33C-4D27997F5A7B/Data
Can anyone offer any advice on what the problem might be and how I might fix it.
    Thanks,

Mail app constantly synching with iCloud server after upgrade to Mavericks

No solution here, but I have either the same or a similar problem. Apple Mail with Gmail (IMAP) used to work fine with Mavericks.
Now with Yosemite most emails load ok, but some show the spinning wheel and "Loading..." message forever. These messages never load.
I also have Thunderbird and it loads and shows these messages just fine. The messages that don't load in Mail are simple plain text messages so it's unrelated to complex attachments and such.
Clearly something is broken in Yosemite that wasn't broken in Mavericks.

  • Mail search problem

Prior to upgrading to Yosemite, mail search results allowed me to find where a specific email was stored in my folders.
When I would click on the folder into in the upper right hand corner the specific folder location would be highlighted.
In the example below you can see my search criteria and the resultant message with the specific info about which folder contains the message, in this example "FLASHLIGHT & BATTERIES". Since I upgraded to Yosemite I can no longer find the folder for a specific email by clicking on folder name.
    Any ideas? Thanks

I have this exact same problem. After upgrading to to the new OS X I can no longer search my email. Not by email address or name or keyword. Nothing.
VIPs while still tagged as VIPs no longer show up in the VIP section either. Says I have NO VIP mail despite having 4 unread in my mailbox.
Spotlight doesn't worth either so I wonder if they are connected? My computer will index if I restart it. But if it goes to sleep it wipes the indexing and I can no longer search my email or spotlight again.

  • Yosemite mail client doesn't have bounce option

In Snow Leopard (i know, it's been a while), there was a great feature in the MAIL APP called "bounce" that would essentially tell the sender they sent email to a bad email account.  This really helped with eliminating Junk mail.  There doesn't appear to be a way to do this in the new Yosemite mail client.  It was such a great feature, why remove it?  Hopefully i'm missing something.
    THanks,

    Not there.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
