Yosemite Mail won't finish upgrading

It has now been over 12 hours.
- Removed 3rd party apps
- force quit Mail
- restarted mac
Yosemite Mail just won't finish upgrading

Hmmm... What did you do after safe boot? I assume just rebooting did not solve the issue, or did it?

  • After Yosemite mail won't open

Help!!! I upgraded to Yosemite yesterday and somehow Apple mail won't open anymore. Every time I click on the icon it says, "The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?", I click Reopen, it stays on the Updating mail database base and a few seconds later it crashes again. What is the problem here?

This fixed it! I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite this morning, and had a very pleasant experience for several hours, when Apple Mail suddenly crashed (Not responding).  I tried everything including reinstalling Yosemite, but Apple Mail does NOT OPEN.

    iPhone won't finish upgrading

    Hey there Werleson,
It sounds like your phone was updating and the process will not complete. I would recommend the following article to help troubleshoot being unable to install an update:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
You might need to use recovery mode if:
You can't update or restore because iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's "in recovery mode".
The Apple logo remains onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
The Connect to iTunes screen appears.
See what to do if the progress bar remains onscreen for several minutes
    Use recovery mode
Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.
Turn off your device. If you can't turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time and wait a few seconds for it to turn off.
Plug the device's USB cable into your computer only.
Hold down the device's Home button as you connect the USB cable to it.
When you see the Connect to iTunes screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 one more time.
iTunes should open and display a message such as: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes."
Use iTunes to restore your device.
If you don't see your device in iTunes, follow these steps for Mac or these for Windows.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Yosemite Mail partially launches after upgrade--two different Macs

I just upgraded my iMac and MacBook Pro to Yosemite and in both cases, now Mail only partially launches. I can access the main menus but almost all of the submenus are grey and the main message viewer and activity viewer are missing (the menu options to show them are also grey).
    Common denominators:
    • Both machines have aftermarket SSD drives (Trim Enabler is now disabled).
    • Both machines have more than one internal drive (Mail is located on the boot volume in the standard directories).
    • Both machines have the same email accounts (8-10, mostly IMAP, 2 Gmail accounts, 1 iCloud account).
    • Both machines have LOTS of email. Nearly 4GB of IMAP data and another 10GB+ of On My Mac data.
    • Both machines use the latest SpamSieve 2.9.17.
    • Both were upgraded from the latest Mavericks.
    • Both machines are having trouble using Spotlight to find apps (yes, it's selected in the Spotlight prefs).
    What I've unsuccessfully tried:
    • Reinstalling 10.10 from recovery partition
    • Safe-booting
    • Holding Shift on Mail startup
    • Removing contents of ~/Library/Mail/Bundles (was already empty)
    • Disabling all accounts in System Preferences --> Internet Accounts
    • Rebuilding Spotlight Index
    • Repairing permissions
    • Examining the console logs (nothing logged when I launch Mail)
    • Examining Activity Monitor for Mail and com/apple.MailServiceAgent (both at 0.0 CPU, no other apps draining CPU or RAM)
    Stranger behavior:
I pulled the following files from ~/Library/
         Mail
         Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
         Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
         Containers/com.apple.mail
         Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
After restarting Mail, I am prompted to add an account. I go through that process and it verifies my account credentials. Then the Messages window finally appears. When I click Check Mail, it says I have entered the wrong password (quadruple-checked for accuracy) and won’t check mail. I disabled SSL to compare but the same results.
The weirdest part is that some of the menu items are still grey, most notably the Activity menu option. This is the same behavior I get when I create a new user account and try to set up the email account. Then, after five minutes or so, Mail unexpectedly quits. When I relaunch, I’m back to square one.
The crash report from that looks like:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Absolute path passed into -[MFLocalAccount mailboxForRelativePath:isFilesystemPath:create:]: /Volumes/tonic/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/2011 Archive.mbox'
    abort() called
terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException
Most bizarre about the above message is that the file path refers to a sharepoint (“tonic”) on my other computer. I’ve imported mail from there in the past.
Not sure what else to try short of a backup, clean installation and migration. Ideas anyone?
    Thanks so much!
    -Aaron

  • After installing Yosemite, iPhoto won't finish updating.

I just installed Yosemite, then my iPhoto application wouldn't open until I updated the database. So I clicked update and it has been over an hour, but the upgrade can't get beyond 7/8 finished.

I've had the exact same problem. Installing Yosemite on my MacBook Air and the subsequent iPhoto upgrade went smoothing. But on my IMac desktop machine I am experiencing the same issue of the app failing to finish updating the database; I also get about 7/8 and then the spinning beachball. I've restarted the computer and shut it down and then restarted, neither worked. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Version 29 won't finish upgrade

I did the upgrade from V 28.2 to V 29.0. When the upgrade gets to the Compatibility Check it just hang. Never stops. It doesn't even appear in Task Master.
Thinking I might have picked up something, I did a System Restore, then did my normal virus routine. MalwareBytes, Panda A-V, Spybot, etc, all good.
I uninstalled V.29 and reinstalled 28.2. Worked exactly as expected. Blew through the Compatibility Check and started fine
    I'm running XP SP 2

    Hello,
Please update to the latest service pack available and all updates available for XP and then try a clean reinstall for Firefox to see if it helps as outlined below.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Yosemite mail won't allow me to add a gmail account to it. Help?

After downloading Yosemite, I changed the password to my school gmail account. Shortly after I realized that Mac Mail would not allow me to send or receive messages. I deleted the gmail account off of my mac mail, and tried to add it again later in order to circumvent the problem. It did not work, as I now cannot add my gmail account back on. Accounts immediately replies "Unable to verify account name or password", or "cannot discover the account settings for the mail server ---." Any advice??

    Hi njs72,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are not able to re add the email account to Mail. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite, mail no longer works

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Yosemite this am.  Now Mail won't upgrade and I cannot access it.  The error message says Mail is damaged, tho it worked fine until I upgraded to Yosemite.  Can anyone offer assistance?  Many thanks.

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Then re-install the OS.

  • Mail won't upgrade in ML

After installing ML Mail will finish upgrading the database, progress bar just sits in place for hours but doesn't time out.  Anyone else had this issue?

Actually I found this thread more helpful
If it is hanging on the 'upgrading database' portion please see this discussion and the solution posted by registerednderd at the bottom of the first page.  It worked for me at least to get past the 'upgrading database' hangup and then to import the old messages.

  • My itunes store, app center, safari and mail won't work after upgrade

I am very dissapointed in the new maverick upgrade. My app center, itune store, safari, and me mail won't work with the new upgrade. I called the help desk and they had me uninstall and re install the upgrade. he said i should have everything backed up cuz I will lose everything, but nothing was lost. It worked for a day, but now it doesn't work at all. it just gives me the hourglass circle symbol and finally times out. A couple of times  my computer gave me an error code that i wasn't connected to the internet, even though I could use chrome no problem. Another error code I got was that I wasn't signed in, but I am. Any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite Mail, Spotlight,Mission Control and App-Store don´t work correctly. Is it possible to return to Mavericks?

Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite Mail, Spotlight, Mission Control and App-Store don´t work correctly. Is it possible to return to Mavericks?

If you have an external drive with an OS X Time Machine backup, then do restore of your last backup. If you have an external drive  with a bootable clone of your previous system, you can boot to that clone and re-clone the OS X on your external drive back to your Mac's internal drive.
If you do not have either of these available, then the reverting/restoring process becomes much more complicated and involves purchasing an external drive and backing up your current system to that drive, then erasing, reformatting your hard drive and now your only options to installng an OS X version is doing a clean install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, then upgrading, again, to either OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion. OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer available for download and Apple has not made OS X 10.9 Mavericks available in any other form to be able to redownload and install.
Maybe it would be better to explain in detail your issues with Yosemite to see if any of us here can help you with your difficulties.
I am not running or using Yosemite, so I cannot help you with your Yosemite issues,
