Yosemite & Word 2008

Trying to keep my computer up-to-date, I installed Yosemite.  Everything seemed fine, until I had to reset my screen saver.  I noticed, at that time,  System Preferences > Security & Privacy indicated my system was using an older version of Fire Vault.  I followed the instructions to update Fire Vault and everything began acting strange.  The file tree is different and all of my documents were moved to a "Users" file.  The screen saver will not stay on the file I indicate.  Word 2008 will not open, instead the office assistant opens and wants to create an identity, then, will not "continue".
Is there a way to restore my identity for Word?  Microsoft does not service the '08 program any longer and insists on having to purchase a newer product.  Safari says I do not have enough memory to download the link I followed this community suggested to update Word.  I have copied my files to a flash drive and deleted a huge quantity of data to accommodate the 'lack of memory' issue and it still says there is not enough memory available.
Does Apple have a program that can create documents, letterhead, billing, inventories, etc.?
Or is there an update for Yosemite that addresses these issues?
Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.
Respectfully,

I back up my documents on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, I did not back up the operating system prior to the upgrade.  Our other MacBook Pro was not updated to Yosemite, I will be able to use it to do my work.
I will make due with Yosemite on this machine and hope Apple issues an update to fix some of the issues I see everyone talk about.
Thank you again for your replies.
Respectfully,

  • Microsoft word 2008 slow save with iMac 2009 and yosemite

I have microsoft word running on 4 different iMacs, all using Yosemite.  My 2008 iMac 2009 iMac  and 2014 retina display iMac all save word docs quickly.  My 2011 iMac saves word docx and word doc documents slowly.   All machines are basically the same.  Memory is not the issue.  I am running same updated version of word 2008 in same configuration.  I reinstalled word on 2011 slow save iMac to no avail.  problem started after upgraded to yosemite.  i have 12 gigs of ram as i thought ram was issue.  Any thoughts welcome. Are others noticing same problem?

There has been a better and free alternative to old versions of MS Word and MS Office since forever. Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 is the latest version of a free and complete All-In-One document processor, spreadsheet, drawing, presentation, database, & formula software, found here: http://www.openoffice.org
It also reads, writes and translates MS Word, saves in many formats, and is pretty easy to use. It's entirely modern and compatible with all the latest Mac operating systems. Good luck.

  • Word 2008 was not work at Yosemite

Yesterday, I upgraded my OS to Yosemite. Though the OS upgrading seemed to be succeeded, I noticed the microsoft word files could not be opened on the new OS. Word App immediately shut down, soon after I tied to open the file, which using the functions of comments or change tracking. On the other hand, the files which did not using such functions were intact. I was using word 2008 version, so I tried to upgrade my word App to word 2011. Unfortunately, problems became worse ! I could not open any word files even the one did not using the tracking function on word 2011!. Finally, I solved these problems to update the word 2011 into the newest conditions.
In conclusion, the newest version of word 2011 seems no problem on Yosemite.

  • Bluetooth keyboard and Word 2008 for Mac after Yosemite

Bluetooth keyboard (apple) on 27 " iMac (mid 2010) won't work in Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac after Yosemite. It is paired and recognized and works normally otherwise.  Mouse works fine, too.

Follow up: After trying a number of different approaches I finally shut off the iMac and let it stay off for several minutes and then restarted it. This is something I had read that another user had tried and had worked for him. To my surprise, the keyboard now works in Word 2008. I have no idea if this will continue to work, or if it might work for any of you, but I would give it a try.
    Process:
    Shut Down your Mac
Let it stay off for several minutes
Power up and check to see if your bluetooth keyboard works in Word 2008.
    Good luck!

  • Yosemite compatibility with microsoft word 2008

I had held off on upgrading to Mavericks because of the issues surrounding the compatibility with Microsoft Word 2008. I am a student and need to use Word to do my work as well as having all of my current documents, including my thesis, in 2008 format. I don't want to risk losing the information or the ability to do my work and I was wondering if there is any information about whether the issue of compatibility with this version had been fixed. I don't have the means to buy a new version of Microsoft but would very much like to be able to update my system since I am still using Mountain Lion.

  • Word 2008 for Mac: Hyperlinks

I am using Word 2008 for the MAC.  I would prefer to use pages but pages cannot save active hyperlinks as a pdf file.  at least I do not know how to do that.
I am creating a large document for a genealogical history of many people.  Each person has two separate pages.  One page has basic data.  The other page shows the media available for that person, with hyperlinks to that media in a separate folder.
I wish to save the document as a pdf file with active hyperlinks.  The media file is unchanged.  Both file and folder will be copied to a DVD for distribution.
The document is fully populated with hyperlinks.  Some hyperlinks point to bookmarks within the document.  These are no problem.  Some hyperlinks point to files in a separate folder.  These are no problem until I create the pdf file and copy it to a DVD which is the distribution copy of the file.  Now, using the hyperlinks requires the end user have and use a browser.  I would like to eliminate that need for a browser and have the hyperlinks work just as they do on MY computer within Word.
Can this be done?  And if so how?
    Thanks

Pages '09 has links to bookmarks, T.O.C., other external Pages documents, URLs and email addresses.
Pages 5.5.2 has links to T.O.C., URLs and email addresses.
Both retain the links in either Exported or Printed PDFs. Neither are useful for distribution because they require the recipient have a compatible Pages on a compatible Mac or iOS device, which in the case of Pages 5.2.2 includes only people running Yosemite, so very incompatible.
Both can have included media such as images, graphics, video and sound but it is not retained in pdfs.
You can use an exported pdf as the basis of your project. Adding links and media to the pdf using Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  • Microsoft word 2008 crashes abruptly when trying to use track changes

    Hi,
I believe this may be related to recently downloading Yosemite:
Every time I try to use Microsoft Word (2008) with "track changes" on, Word shuts off abruptly.
Has any one else had this problem?  Is there a way to fix it?
I've already tried Disk Utility - disk & disk permissions repair.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • I can't type in my Microsoft Word 2008 anymore on MacbookPro, how do I fix this?

I have a MacbookPro from 2009 and my Microsoft Word 2008 won't let me type or use any keyboard functions on the page. I still have full use of my mouse/cursor. I also just recently updated to Yosemite. Help!

This just started happening to me, too, about an hour ago. I updated My Macbook Air 2013 to Yosemite a day after it came out, and I use Microsoft Word 2008 quite frequently (several hours a day), yet this just started happening.
TEMPORARY SOLUTION: I find that if I completely quit Microsoft Word and reopen it, I am once again able to type.
It's happened to me twice so far tonight. This second time I noticed that it was right after I copy and pasted something, then changed it to double space. Have you noticed anything similar?

  • Pages'08 vs MS Word 2008

I have been using Pages'08. I find it great. It's very straightforward and user-friendly. It works wonderful especially when I incorporate some pictures in my paper.
However, it's such a pain in the neck that I have to export to .doc or .pdf every time I finish my work;nevertheless, I've been using it because it's the best word processor ever as far as I know.
Now we have MS office 2007(?is it right?) for Mac. Even though I really hate MS stuff, if MS word 2007 works as well as Pages'08, I would switch to it.
How many times I cursed my self when I saw my Pages file in my external hard drive when I needed to print it out at other places?

Yes, I know that a lot of things can be done with Word, already in 2004. However, I still have a feeling that one has to struggle more to make things work in Word.
Correct me if I'm wrong in this, but Word 2008 still does not snap objects to alignment lines? It still does not support advanced typography (except very basic ligatures)? It still does not support Services, does it?
Word 2008 does a lot of things that Pages does not do, and there are a lot of things that you can do, if you only sit down and take your time in Word 2008. However, the amount of functions in Word 2008 makes it more difficult to find the things you actually need. For many of us. Depending on the individual needs of course.

  • Snow Leopard won't print graphics in Word 2008

When I updated to Snow Leopard and Office 2008, everything seemed to work perfectly, open, and run well. However, my .doc files previously created in Office X that include graphics from the draw program will print ONLY text and text boxes--no graphics. I get the same in compatibility mode (.doc), when I "save as" to DocX format, and when I try to save as a PDF--text floating in a sea of non-graphic white. I sent the file to my husband's computer running Leopard, and it prints perfectly. Similarly, if I open Word 2008 and create a fresh, native docx file with graphics, those graphics DO print. So this seems to be a Snow Leopard problem with compatibility Word files using graphic elements (nothing fancy--just flow chart stuff.) Any ideas anyone? I am a small educational publisher and do NOT relish the thought of redoing a boatload of work in another program. Help!

As near as I can tell, the printer is not the problem. I have tried three different printers, all with the most up-to-date drivers, and even tried Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, which should bypass all of the above. The graphic elements that worked perfectly in my previous system simply disappear in Snow Leopard. My workaround is to send them to an "older" Mac NOT running Snow Leopard, then convert them to PDF files, then print from Snow Leopard, and all is well. Absolutely frosted! I have publishing deadlines to meet!

  • Pdfmark code in MS Word 2008 doc doesn't seem to work properly to create Named Destination

    Hi all,
I've been having trouble with creating Preview-compatible Named Destinations in Acrobat 9.x (see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/770470?tstart=0).  Distiller, on the other hand, appears to create compatible Destinations, so as a last-ditch effort, I tried to go back to my original source file (Microsoft Word 2008 document) to use Distiller's pdfmark functionality, to see if maybe I could finally get a PDF with Preview-compatible Destinations.
Following instructions found elsewhere on this forum, I went into Word and inserted the following field into a test location in my document:
    PRINT "[ /Dest /testdest /View [ /XYZ null null null ] /DEST pdfmark"
This field code is supposed to then cause a pdfmark to be inserted into the resulting PostScript and/or PDF files.  Distiller is supposed to understand this and turn it into a Named Destination called "testdest."  However, it doesn't seem to work - I don't see the pdfmark code in the PS file, and the PDF file doesn't have any Named Destinations in it.
I'm using Acrobat 9.x on Mac OS X 10.6.5, so I tried this two different ways:
    1) Using the "Print to Adobe PDF" workflow (which replaced the "Adobe PDF Printer" from previous OS/Acrobat versions) - this automatically generates a PDF via (presumably) an API call to Distiller... and
    2) Using the "Print to Postscript" workflow to generate a PS file, which I then ran through Adobe Distiller.
In neither case did I end up with a named destination in the PDF file, as I was supposed to.  In case #2, even the Postscript file didn't have a pdfmark embedded in it.  Thus, I'm assuming that perhaps this is particular issue may be a problem with MS Word 2008 rather than with Acrobat... but I'm hoping someone might have a clue as to how to fix it.
I welcome ideas on how to get Word 2008 to properly output pdfmark code, so that Distiller will pick it up and properly embed a Named Destination into the PDF...
    Thanks in advance.
(If anyone has ideas about the Preview-compatible problem, linked above, that would also be great!)

You're suggesting that it was never fixed from Word 2004 to 2008?  Possibly.  I wonder if it's fixed in Word 2011?  Anyone know?  But is it really a Word problem, rather than a Distiller issue?
I appreciate your offer, though I do have access to Word on Windows (2003, I think), so I could try Distilling there... I only worry about formatting, since there are minor differences (e.g. font kerning, etc.) between Mac and Windows that are subtle, but sufficient to create formatting issues for very long documents (e.g. pushing figures onto the wrong pages, etc.).  That would be a rather big problem.
The question remains whether this is an issue with Word or Distiller, though... and whether it's fixed in Distiller X and/or Word 2011.
    Adobe, care to comment?
I'd really love to find a proper Mac solution, if one exists... it would be rather a slap to Mac users if a solution doesn't exist.

  • How do I convert from metric to inches in Microsoft Word 2008?

    Hello,
I'm trying to create a poster on my Macbook and am using Word 2008. Right now it's in the metric measurement and I want to convert to inches, how do I do this? I've tried the help and searching online and found how to do it on a PC but can't figure out how to do it on a Mac.

Okay my sister figured it out. You go to Preferences and click the General tab and then at the bottom it is listed in measurement and you just switch that to inches and click okay.

  • What happen to the scrolling arrows in word 2008?

There used to be arrows on the side for me to scroll up and down.  What happened to them?  I'm workinig in Word 2008 with Lion.  All the scroll bar has is the double arrows which will give you the "previous," or "next page."  I don't want the next page, I want to be able to scroll line by line.  I just don't see anyway to do this.  Note: I DO have a scroll bar, just not the single arrows that let you scroll line by line.  I also don't want to move the curser by using the arrows because many time I want to keep my place.
    Thanks,
    Jason

I use a trackball with two buttons.  Excuse me for a second for this is not actually directed at you:  WHY THE **** DID THEY REMOVE THE BUTTONS!!!!!
Sorry bout that.  What gets me is that they kept the double arrows for scrolling the page.  but you can already do that by clicking on the bar.  So they have one redundant option but took the other one out completeley?
Also seems like something that an update could fix easy.
People say to just scroll with the bar, but when you are dealing with 250 pages, then you can't move the the pages any small amounts.  No
WE REALLY NEED TO SCROLL LINE BY LINE!

  • Network home folders, collaboration sharepoint and Microsoft Word 2008

I'm hoping someone who knows how Microsoft Word 2008 works on network volumes can shed some light on our situation.
We run a small managed network with about 15 leopard clients and a leopard server. We've got two sharepoints, a "homes" share for network home folders, and an "Office" share with our shared office document folders.
Several times a week, users will encounter a situation where Microsoft Word 2008 will claim that a file is open by another user, or that the file can be opened in "read only" mode, even though the file is not in use. Naturally, the problem cannot be replicated when I am present.
    ### My Hypothesis ###
My users are in the habit of quickly borrowing machines from other users to pull up documents in the "office" share by using the "connect as" button. So, for example, userA is logged in to her machine (and is thus connected to the network home folder on the server). userB comes along and borrows her machine -- without logging out, will connect to the shared office folder, pull up and edit/print a document, etc. We're not currently auto mounting the office share.
I know that Microsoft Word creates lock folders located in the .TemporaryItems folder at the root level of the "office" share. The folders are named "folder.xxxx", where xxxx is the userid of the account that created the lock folder. Everyone uses a network account, so everyone has a unique userID. If I list the .TemporaryItems folder using the CLI, i can see lock folders that are several days or a week old. So Word doesn't seem to be cleaning up after itself immediately, at least not always.
So my question: when userB connects to the office share on a borrowed machine (logged in to the client machine using the network home folder of userA), is it possible that word will now create lock folders for userB, and will be unable to clean up lock folders created by userA?
Anyone have other ideas for investigating the "file in use" problem?

Switched user back to the network home folder and adjusted the MS Word preferences so that the autorecovery files would be stored on the local client machine. There doesn't seem to be a comparable setting in the Excel preferences.
My initial testing suggests that this has reduced how often this problem occurs, but has not eliminated it. I tested by repeatedly opening and closing a couple of different word files in rapid succession -- i was able to replicate the "file opens as read only" problem occasionally.
I've talked to Apple server support about this issue. While they were helpful, they didn't have an explanation or solution for this problem. There are a number of postings in the microsoft mactopia discussion boards site where people report similar problems.
