You can safely ignore some errors that fsck reports....?

I got the following report while Verifying in DU after installing the latest Security Update 2009-001. I took every possible precaution: installed in Safe Boot from standalone download, repaired Permissions before and after, disconnected all peripherals and stood on my head.
I repaired successfully, booted from the Disc. DU, while booted from the disc, saw the error too, so I know it wasn't a spurious error appearing only when booted from the HD. I'm wondering if there's anything here to be concerned about. I have never before had DU report the disc needed repair.
(I also repaired a Permissions error while booted in Safe Mode, before doing any of this. This was strange, since I'd just done a Permissions repair only a few days earlier for the QT Update. I won't get into that now, since I my main concern is the Disc error, and I don't want to overload this post with too many questions).

Both the Pogue, Missing Manual, Tiger, book and this KB article, report "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair" and "Invalid volume free block count " as "benign" errors, to be ignored.
"You can safely ignore some errors that fsck reports when journaling is enabled."
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2028
I've been looking into this on my own, but here's the source of my confusion: 1. The heading of the KB article says it is for 10.3.9 or earlier (the article was last modified August, 2008), but way down at the bottom, 10.4 is listed under "Products Affected." Is this just someone at Apple being sloppy? 2. Both the Pogue Tiger book p.778, and the KB article describe this as an error that can be reported while repairing using fsck. They don't mention errors reported by DU, which is how I got this error. But just to be certain, can I safely assume it would apply to errors reported by DU as well? They are, effectively, the same thing, aren't they?
No strange sounds coming from the HD and everything seems to be fine. And no more reports of this kind coming from DU.

OK. Thanks very much,
My question arose because both the KB article and Pogue discuss these errors only in the context of running fsck. Since you say journaling is automatically turned off when DU does repairs, _does that, then, mean that these errors are only spurious when coming from fsck, not DU, because journaling is enabled in fsck? Journaling enabled is what causes them to appear in fsck?_ Is this why there's no mention of DU for these errors from the Apple KB article and Pogue? And does that mean that *if DU reports them, not fsck,* they are to be taken more seriously, that they are benign, meaning not very serious, but not to be dismissed completely as when they are reported by fsck?
Yes, the errors are benign, but should not be ignored.
I thought the KB article and Pogue were letting me off the hook completely. I see that's, maybe, not exactly the case.
*I never ran fsck.* I did everything from DU, either booted from the HD or the Tiger Installer disc. Fsck only came up because I discovered this KB article and the Pogue excerpt, which made me think that, since fsck is essentially DU, but run from a command line, they applied as well to the errors DU found. I didn't realize that, maybe, journaling enabled in fsck was at the heart of this issue.
As mentioned, I ran DU from the Tiger Installer disc and it repaired the error right away on the first run. I ran it twice just to be sure.
If DU ran successfully but did not repair the problem, then run Repair Disk repeatedly until no problems are reported.
There was no other problem, only the error DU reported, which was successfully repaired.
DU is supposed to disable journaling before repairing the drive. But there's nothing wrong with disabling journaling manually before repairing the drive.
Meaning I can't always assume it will? And, perhaps, it didn't this time and that's why I got the error?
Everything seems fine now; I was just somewhat alarmed, since I didn't understand where this could be coming from. I'd already verified the disc, booted from my clone, very recently.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
    iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases. Or roll back to the previous build:
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
    iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)

  • You Can't Calculate Totals on that!...SO #@!%#! WHAT, YOU GREAT PILE OF !@#

In Access you have an asterix which represents every field in the table. Useful if you want to see all the data in a table for a single record. I've done it a million times before.
So why is it telling me that I can't calculate totals on the *, so I should remove it from the query grid and replace it with the fields I want and calculate totals then.
I DON'T WANT TO CALCULATE ANY #!@%#@!! TOTALS!!
I AM PUTTING THE FIELDS I #@!%$#! WANT - I WANT ALL OF THEM!! I JUST DON'T WANT TO DOUBLE CLICK 30 TIMES WHEN ONCE WILL DO!
It's driving me insane because I'm going through hundreds of Oracle tables and it takes so long to browse to the record I'm looking for and it should work to use the asterix, I've done it so many times before.
How do I override this utterly unhelpful behaviour? Am I stuck in some sort of "Queries will only calculate Totals! mode that I don't know about?
I know, I know, Access is a micro$loth invention, not Oracle, but we have to use an ODBC link to the SQL database via Acces and it's going to kill me.
Unless I slam my PC into my neighbour's head first!
    Any help greatly apprciated.
    Sorry for the rant!

Sorry, there's a credit crisis doncha know! ;)
In the Access/ODBC/Oracle query design view you can create a query by linking fields in tables and then choosing fields you want to output in the query results. At the top of each table is an asterix which uses all the fields from the entire table in a query and outputs the data from all the fields. I'm looking through various tables to find useful fields and using one particular record as my example so I get consistent data output.
Now, I can look in the actual linked tables and see what they contain, but I want the data for a single record, not the general table contents and there are hundreds of thousands of records. So I'm using the query design to search for the data for a single record and using only one table per query. But if I double click on the asterix to indicate "Use All Fields from this Tabel" I get the "But you can't calculate totals on that!" message. If I add them all individually I get an "Illegal use of LONG data".I once looked at Access, many moons ago. Didn't like it.
However, from what you describe, it would seem that you need to somehow join the tables as you're doing, but also apply some restrictions on the data so that you're not trying to retieve all the rows back. As for it's error complaining about the totals, I would expect something like you've got an aggregate function in there and things aren't being grouped together. Either that or there's some "setting" somewhere that automatically tries to total things, which hopefully you could turn off. The best thing is to take the error message/number and lookup what that means via some website/documentation that lists Access errors and how to resolve them.
You'll be lucky to find anyone here who will know (or care about) Access.

  • Why You Can't Load Some Images On Your 5th Generation ipod

Why You Can't Load some images on your 5th Gen ipod.
    - OK here is the scoop: I could not load some images on my 5th gen ipod and yet other images would load no problemo. Images were JPEG, jpg, PSD (all approved image types for the 5th gen ipod)
    - After doing several tests like restoring the software on the ipod, reinstalling itunes I still could not find the problem, then I noticed as soon as I would open an image in Photoshop CS2/CS3 that was otherwise loading on the ipod no problemo, when I would save that same image in Photoshop the image would not load in my ipod.
    - So after playing with several settings in Photoshop I found the problem:
-In Photoshop go to File handling:
    -Image Previews:
    - And click on:Never Save
You do not want to save a photo with a "Image Preview" when saving any file type that you want to load on your 5th gen ipod. it would seem the ipod will not accept any images with a "Image Preview" embedded into the file, JPEG, PSD, jpg etc.
I hope this will help some of you because I just waisted a whole day to find this out the hard way.
    Cheers,
    Mac Fans
    BTW I use a Mac Pro/Intel OSX Tiger 10.4.9

Also I just found out when you are saving an image in Photoshop uncheck the " Embed Color Profile" box.
So do not embed your images with a "Preview" and DO NOT embed a "Color Profile" when saving images in Photoshop or the images MAY not load on your ipod.
    Have Fun

    In the Elements Organizer 13
The key to all this is to click on/select/highlight the Album that you have created in Local Albums.
Then make sure that the Sort By: (in the row below the highlighted "Media" header is set for Album Order.
You should see a number at the top left of each of thumbnails.
Then, click on the thumbnail that you want to move, hold down the click, and drag the thumbnail to the wanted new location
in the line up of thumbnails.
Often I had to press down hard on the drag.
Please let us know if that worked for you.
Also, in Edit Menu/Preferences/Keyword Tags and Albums/Enable Manual Sorting Options, I set all for manual.

  • What's the ultimate function of replicating progrommes to icloud because you can always download the programmes that you want to backup in icloud from apps without icloud

As we can always download the programmes that we want to backup in icloud from apps directly without icloud, then what's the ultimate utility of uploading programme files to icloud?
    thanks a lot!

Backing up to iCloud is an alternative way for apple customers to be able to save data apart from contact, calendars, notes, etc. Now it might be pointless to you and to me, but some customers do not have computer to back up to or have their CD's that they import those songs from, so they need to save it.
To me backing up to icloud is only for 8GB iphones, any other devices will take up more than the free 5GB icloud has or you buy more storage, so it does not make sense to me or some people.

  • When I use Tab Groups, can I have some tabs that are always open together with a group, and just switching the groups that are besides the "always showing" tabs?

I like to have some tabs always open, like for example the facebook page, while others I need only occasionally, like Ebay / Work / Fun (which I could put into Tab Groups). So I was wondering if it is possible to have the following configuration:
Always open Tabs (e.g. Facebook, Myspace) and then next to that ONE of the Tab Groups (e.g. Group Ebay Stuff and Group Work Stuff and Group Fun Stuff)
or alternatively have TWO Tab Groups open at the same time, like Group A and Group B, and then switch to Group A and Group C, then Group A and Group D, then Group A and Gourp B again.

Hmm, well you can right click a tab you want always open and click "Pin as App Tab". I personally don't have much experience with Tab Groups, I'm just learning how to use them.
    Hope this helps!

  • Admin account can't perform some operations, that another admin account can

This is a little complicated to explain:
A friend of mine wanted to have 2 accounts on his brand new MacBook Pro 15" unibody (Mac OS X 10.5.6). I have set up them for him (let's call them account A and account B, at his request both with admin features) and installed some utilities (e.g. Perian, Flip4Mac, MPlayer, Skype etc...), all these in A. But he started to use B and already performed all the settings from his old computer (hours of work to set up everything) and he said, that the A account he wants just for seldom usage. I haven't seen any problem in this account priority switching, because I thought, that since they are both admin accounts, it doesn't matter. I was very wrong though:
    - all the applications, installed in A account always show before launching the warning, that the app was downloaded from the internet - normally you see it just once, but here it shows up always. Very annoying.
    - the worst part is that some operations always fail in B account, but perform normally in A account - Exporting movies in QT crashes in B, works in A
    - Setting up PDF preferences in InDesign works in A, doesn't work in B (it sees Acrobat settings, but doesn't allow to work with them). Interesting part is, that InDesign was already installed in B account but works perfect only in A...
First step what I did in effort to fix this issue was repairing permissions (boot from installation disk, no good), then I erased the B account and performed repairing permissions again, but again still the same.
Is there any way how to force system to treat the B account (now the only account at the computer) as fully valid admin account, that can perform all the operations, that were able in A account?
I really wouldn't like to go back and start from scratch.

It looks like it's just a seriously corrupt account.
Make a new one, and see if it all works there.
We could probably track down the cause, but it would take a LONG time, and it would probably just be quicker to make a new account and transfer files, emails, etc.

  • What to do when you can't access some purchased content?

I bought a couple of books for my kids through an app in 2012. At some point, the app asked me to "upgrade" to a new version of their app, which I did. In doing that, I lost the books I had purchased. I have tried to restore purchases, and they say there is nothing to restore. The original app I was using is no longer available in the app store. I have contacted the publisher of the app, and they just told me to re-download them from the app store, but these were in-app purchases, so they're not in the app store. What do I do? Is there any protection for consumers in this instance? How do I either get my content or my money back?

You can't do much more than requesting, using the Request Page you found. Depending on the movies, it could also be the studios holding back the release in iTunes or other platforms.

Nope, it was a Verizon Wireless Store.  I went in there in the first place because I trusted the Company for their professionalism, but I've been let down badly.  I posted my story on here because I'm hoping to be able to get the attention of someone from Customer Service.  It seems like the only way you can actually speak with a live person who knows what they are doing, is when you stop paying your bill on time.  After you pay your bill, they transfer you to a poorly trained "rep" that has no authority to handle anything important. I'm actually a pretty patient person, but when it takes someone over 45 min mostly just to keep me on hold, and then tell me they can't help me, I'm not really impressed with their idea of customer service.
