Zedboard Xilinx Zync 7000 interface using labview

Hello,
I am doing my thesis in Zedboard for developing an DDR3 memory test and verification. For that I need to implement an LabVIEW dedicated Graphical User Interface base on NI Measurement Studio.
Topic is : Szudy of Algorithmic test setup for DDR3 SDRAM with a Xilinx Zynq SoC.
Here i have done my algorithm in Xilinx SDK. But I need to make a GUI using labview. Which helps to execute these programs. Please let me know how I can do this.
1. Or is it possible to directly access the Zynq SoC using Labview. If yes how?
2. Or if I need to do the coding in Xilinx SDK and How I can run this code using Labview?
Please give me an detailed reply. Since I am new to labview. I m not understanding how to start with. If you have any example design please share with me.
Thanks & Regards,

No you can't develop directly in LabVIEW and deploy that program to the Zync board. NI has their own Zync based hardware platform (cRIO and myRIO) but the tools to target those boards are specific to the NI hardware implementation and won't work with other hardware. Developing an interface for another hardware platform is a lot of work and needs to be adapted for every single flavor of a new hardware platform. And NI does not support this for other hardware.
So your option will be to develop an application with the Zync SDK for the Zync ARM controller and supply some form of communication interface (serial port, TCP/IP, or similar) in that application over which you can send commands from LabVIEW to your embedded application.

  • Communication through RS232c serial interface using labview

i am trying to communicate with a device through RS232c serial interface using labview 6.1....i have tried to run the example "Serial communication.vi" provided in 6.1 and it doesnt work....do i need any special hardware or do i need to configure my hardware to communicate through RS232c...
    thanks in advance
    shri

Seems like I placed a small (maybe 30ms) delay at the end of the serialcommunications.vi structure.. for some reason my PC didn't like running as fast as it tried to go. Also look into the actual serial communication.vi and open the vi's inside it - check that the port setting (0 or 1) are ok, the baud rate (probably 9600) are ok. I'm running with only three wires in my application, TX, RX and Common. The PC may need to be rebooted to enable the com port - or use device manager and see if it says the com ports 0 and 1 are both OK..
Try buildinga loopback plug with TX to RX, RX to TX, and Common to Common and see if hyperterminal (or other serial communications program works - there is also Loopback.VI in the NI library somewhere that can be used. Good Luck!! Dave

    Sir
We were able to solve that problem...but now could you advice as to which DC power supply we should use (preferably avalable in India) so that it can be controlled by Labview (through a gpib/rs232/any other port) to give a square wave of desired frequency/other parameters.

  • Using LabView to serial interface my microscope how I make a user interface to make the stage move by pressing buttons?

I have used LabView very little and am trying to write a program to control a microscope. I want to be able to give it commands such as to get the stage to move left, right, forward, back, and return to zero. I'm having trouble implementing the code into my block diagram. I've been reading LabView 8.6 tutorials for a couple of weeks and I'm still learning. What I know that  is that I need a event structure inside a while-loop for the user interface but I've been stuck.
Thanks for any help! If you need me to try and provide more information please say so.

Alright so my serial port code should be inside a while loop unfortunately it doesn't work whenever I enter a command to move the stage. It sits there maybe I'm missing something.
So let me give you an overview to what happens in my code, so the configure serial port is very crucial. The VISA Write writes the bytes to the port. The first VISA Write takes the string to write command. I connected the second VISA write to make it easier whenever I enter a command, the \r will iniate the command as a whole. Example L\r will move the stage to Left once, ending up at VISA Read then closing. All of this found in separate case structures.
Now the user interface to control the the movement of the microscope is one of my issues, making several attempts to make it work yielded no results. My best work not the best but a attempt is attached, also one of the things with this I'm having trouble with is getting the button to talk to the stage. On previous buttons I worked on I could press the button and light up an LED on the front panel, I thought the same principle would relate to the movement of the stage, no such luck.
I hope I cleared up some misconceptions on my part, I appreciate your patience.

There is probably a way to do it, but it it may be easier to use an X-series board for the job.   They support a new counter capability for count reset on a digital edge without needing to be configured in encoder position mode.  I am not sure exactly how that feature's been implemented however, so maybe it won't make things easier after all.
The plan based on the hoped-for behavior:
    1. Configure an X-series counter for pulse generation based on "ticks" of your clock channel.
    2. Set both initial delay and low time to the critical # of ticks.
    3. Configure for count reset on a digital edge (if possible in pulse generation mode)
    4. Configure the count reset value to be the critical # (or possibly 1 less, if possible in pulse generation mode)
    5. If you want the output to remain high indefinitely, configure the counter task to use its own output as a
pause trigger, and pause while high.
The way pulse generation works is to preload a # of "low time" ticks into the count register.  Then every source edge will decrement the count.  When the count reaches terminal count (0), the counter's output is toggled (or can be configured to pulse).  The register is then loaded with the # of "high time" ticks and the process continues.
You would be perpetually interrupting the count-down process as long as you got your triggers in time.  The count would keep getting reset to the # of low counts, keep decrementing toward 0 without reaching it, and so on.  If ever you did reach 0, the output state would toggle high, then the high state would prevent subsequent clock signals from decrementing the count.
You can conceivably do a similar thing with a 6601, but I'm pretty sure you'd need 2 counters working together to get it working.

  • How to use labview to talk to PC ELITE IEEE 488 Interface

    Hi,
As with any hardware, this board should come with its device driver. The device driver allows you communicate with the device from your application.
Also, the device driver needs to provide Language Interface files. For example, NI-488.2 (NI's GPIB driver) provides header and library files for Visual C, .bas files for Visual Basic and VIs for LabVIEW. Each of these allows you to call the GPIB function from any of these programming environment.
You should check the documentation of you board and determine what Language interface files it provides. Look in their website for any LabVIEW drivers.
If the driver does not provide LabVIEW drivers, you can still use the driver if it provides a dll where you can call the driver function. In labVIEW yo
u can use the Call library node to directly call dll functions.

  • Can I interface a normal DC motor with a computer using LabView?

I am trying to find a DC motor that can be interfaced with the computer using LabView. Is that possible? If so, HOW?

There are many ways to control DC motors from LabVIEW. National Instruments provides plugin motion control boards like the PCI-7342 that are capable of controlling 2 to 8 stepper or servo motor (DC) axes. Additionally you need a drive for power amplification.
You find lots of very good information about controlling motors from LabVIEW with NI motion control hardware under this link:
    http://www.ni.com/motion/
The NI motion control boards have lots of high level features like position control, interpolation modes, contouring, onboard programming and so on. Your request is very brief so I can't tell if this level of control is oversized for your application or not. If you simply want to turn a DC motor on or off there will be cheaper methods to accomplish that.

  • PCI Express interface control using LABVIEW

I've made my own PCI Express card which is meant for data transmission from external device to PC through PCI Express intergace.
Everything is being controlled by FPGA chip.
My qiestion is, how to make Labview be able to recognise the device and send data through PCIe interface?
Thanks you very in advance for you help.

    Hi
    Meghan,
    Thanks for your reply!
    Basically, this is a signal
acquisition system. The main part are ADC which is connected to FIFO memory and
then to PCI Express pins. Cyclone from ALTERA is meant to control all the
    processes.
Something similar you can find here:
http://www.knottsystems.com/cyclone.aspSo, all the system is located on the PCI
Express card which is supposed to communicate with a PC through PCI Express
    Bus.
There is a program inside the Cyclone which makes all the necessary
packages according to PCIe Specification for the data transmission through the
    Bus.
So the problem is how to get data into the PC using
    Labview.

  • I Need some info about interfacing the PC or laptop to Spectrum analyzer using Labview

we need to control  the spectrum analyzer using an interface   that will    be   developed  using  Labview  .
Spectrum analyzer will be connected to tha PC using RS 232C and the waveform observed will be seen in the PC interface of spectrum analyzer.
Pls send some info regarding dis.

Using a spectrum analyzer with LabVIEW is a pretty common application, my first program 15 years ago did this. What we need to know to help you though is what model spectrum analyzer are you planning on using? Most of the ones I'm familiar with use the GPIB interface rather than RS232, but that isn't a major issue, the spectrum analyzers command set is the important one. There are a lot of LabVIEW drivers available for a larger number of analyzers, here on the National Instruments' site. Although most use the GPIB interface (or ethernet), they can be used as a starting point to develop an RS232 driver if one isn't available, assuming that there is a driver for the model that you have, or a closely related one (manufacturers frequently use similar command sets within a model type).
So, what type analyzer are you using, and what types of things are you planning on doing with it?

  • How do i open and control other programs using labview?

I'm presently trying to use labview to try to open and operate another program, but having much difficulty. The external program i'm using is called the Foundation program.
This Foundation program will use VHDL programming to create a virtual chip and then synthesising it.This program will then simulate the output of this VHDL program to verify that it is working as desired. Then the last stage is to download the whole VHDL program into a FPGA chip using a xilinx cable.
All this need to be done using a labview program - to open the Foundation program and then extract the saved file and then to execute the download command to cause the VHDL program to be downloaded onto the FPGA chip. How do i go
about doing all this? What is the first step i must do.Also all this have to be done thru networking..looks like its too difficult..I really need help.
    grays

I haven't done VHDL so pardon my ignorance.
LabVIEW can call external DLL via "Call Library Function" or C programs via "Code Interface Node", both located in "Advanced" function.
If your program is a DOS program, use "System Exec.vi" found in "Communication" function. If you need to format your DOS command prior to sending it, use the "Format Into String" function in "String" function palette.
Lastly, if you're trying to extract data, assuming it is text, use "File I/O" functions. If the data is binary, use "File I/O -> Binary File VIs".
Hope that answers most of your questions.

  • I am trying to use Labview and RP1210 compliant hardware to connect to a truck J1939 bus and receive messages.

I am trying to use Labview and RP1210 compliant hardware to connect to a truck J1939 bus and receive messages.
Specifically I am attempting  to read data frames using the RP1210_READMESSAGE .   am able to configure the hardware and send a message to the J1939 bus. .    I think I have not configured something correctly.  I can use the RP1210_SENDMESSAGE and see the message I have sent on the bus using CANalyzer   When I use the RP1210_READMESSAGE   I get the timestamp from a message and the return from the function sends back the correct number of bytes (the number matches the number of bytes I sent out plus four bytes from the timestamp).  What I am having trouble with is actually receiving the data. I have had the same type of behavior from two different hardware (Vector CANcase XL and Nexiq USB Link), so I don't think the issue is vendor specific.
Has anyone been able to make the RP1210_RECIEVEMESSAGE function work correctly?
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks
I have already tried that.  The links are the NI RP1210 wraper. The problem I am having is using labview to interface with the RP1210 layer.  The RecieveMessage char*fpchAPIMessage this is the output which is a pointer to a cahracter array.  In this variable I can receive the timestamp of the message but not the message.  The retun showns the correct amount of bytes are aviaable (18 for a 8 byte message) but I can only get the 4 byte timestamp  I think I have to dereference this pointer to view the data.  I am not sure how to fix this.

  • How can I have an english interface to labview if the package is in german

    Hi ,
I'm a student that makes a project in Germany using labview ... the problem is that my german is not that good , and the labview is in german so here is my question :
how can I have an  english interface to labview if the package is in german (labview 7 )
    Any help would be apprecieted.

The only way to really have everything in English is to install an English version of LabVIEW.  You may want to talk to your local NI sales representative about the possibility of getting a different version.

  • How can i use labview.tlb to control Labview from an external application?

    Hi,
I've been told by a labview engineer that i could use the file
labview.tlb located in the labview install folder to control labview
from an external application (in my case, a C# app). I'm using Labview
6.1 under Windows 2000. This article confirms that:
    "ActiveX and LabVIEW"
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/5401BE584FBAEECE862567C2006D36C7?opendocument
But i've not been able to find out how to use this file to achieve
what i want. I just want to be able to open/close labview, open/close
    a vi, start/stop a vi, hide/show a vi from a C# application. The above
web page talks about activex but i really don't see the realtion
between activex and that labview.tlb file.
    Is there so
mebody around who knows how to use that file? Why does NI
tell us that it's possible to do what i want to do but doesn't explain
how (or hides this info very well)?
    Thanks

Thanks for the link, i actually already found this link before. I've
found yesterday how to use Labview.tlb, just add it to the references
of the project, it was probably too easy for me at that time:-) But
now, i'm still stuck as there is no doc about using the interfaces and
classes of this activex to control labview.
The example given on your link is made is C++ and for some reasons,
the wrapper generated for Labview.tlb when i added it to my c# project
doesn't seem to expose the same
interfaces and classes as the one used
in the C++ example. I therefore can't use the C++ example in C#.
I've tried to do something like:
    LabVIEW.ApplicationClass a = new LabVIEW.ApplicationClass();
Just this line causes labview to launch but then immediately throws an
exception: "Query interface for interface LabVIEW._IApplication
    failed".
Does somebody knows how to use that control in C#/VB.NET ?

  • How can I install (download) a Labview FPGA code onto Altera FPGA chip using Labview FPGA module?

    Hi there
Guys i'm a very new labview user (PhD student), my project is about ( design and implementation of a high speed-yet sophisticated system using Labview environment then install this project's code (using Labview FPGA module) onto Altera-made FPGA chip).
so kindly, can any body help me in this?...is there any way to connect labview with Altera FPGA?...please anything would be said 'd be of great benifits
    thanks a lot in advance.

as previously mentioned, labview fpga only supports national instruments targets utilizing xilinx fpgas. the hdl generated by labview fpga is encrypted and cannot be used to synthesize a design outside the labview fpga design flow.
however, if you must use labview for your project, it might be possible for you to design the system in labview and use one of the labview embedded modules ( http://www.ni.com/embedded )to generate c code which you can then port to systemc and compile for the altera fpga. i'm not saying it will be easy, but it should be possible.
