Zero KB PDFs

I have a script that batch exports PDF's from the different layers in an Indesign file.
I can export the same file 5 times in a row and out of those 5 times, 2 times will result in a handfull of the the PDF's being Zero KB.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Not the same PDF's are zero KB and not even the same quanity are Zero kb.
Anyone else run into this. I saw a post previously on a different site about someone else's script doing the same thing but with no answer.
Thank you in advance!

I've run into a couple of problems with pdf export scripts. One is that placed pdf or ai files drop off (on the current export and all subsequent exports during the same script session) if you click on any palettes or the control bar while the script is running. It looks from a quick test like this bug has survived into CS6. I will file it again.
All of my pdf export scripts include a one second delay after each export, and I think I started using that initially to address the problem you're seeing. You might try that. For some reason which is now lost to me, I don't use $.sleep(), but rather a function that looks like this:
function delay(ms) {
  var date = new Date(),
        curDate;
  do {
    curDate = new Date();
  } while (curDate - date < ms);
I don't know whether I use that because it worked and $.sleep() didn't, or because I plucked that off the web before I knew $.sleep() existed.

  • Copying zero byte pdf files infinitely between shared computers

    I've just had a nasty experience (which has happened years before in lower operating systems) and is extremely annoying. My Mac Mini and MacBook are set to share files. On my Mini (running 10.7.5) I create a pdf file from a "Print this page" option on a Safari webpage  (using "Print this page" => PDF => Save as PDF). The file shows up ok in the finder of my Mini. Then in another finder window I open my shared MacBook (running Mavericks) and navigate to the folder I wish to copy into.
    I drag and drop the file into said folder on the shared Mac, and an info window appears to show the copy process. There is a progress bar, but the process is never completed, but appears stalled. I go away and come back an hour later. Same thing still happening. I check on my MacBook and the folder is now filled with tens of thousands (literally!) of zero byte files, being added to infinitely.
    Talk about annoying! Then the finder balks at putting these in the Trash. Then the Trash balks at being emptied. I found the best thing is to drag out of the contaminated folder the files I keep, put them into a new folder, and trash the entire folder that has been filled with you-know-what.
    I also turned off TechTool's Trash history option in Preferences, because that would be driven crazy by his process. I checked Activity Monitor, and Finder was shown as NOT RESPONDING several times during this process. Finally got rid of the files. Now I'm using DropBox to transfer files. Sharing web PDF's between my Mac's has become a hazardous experience.
    Anyone else have this experience? Any idea how to prevent it? Or is Apple needing to make a software update for this?

    More likely that Techtool needs to make an update.  Ask Micromat.

  • Change physical size of a PDF?

    I have a PDF  11" wide x 8.5" tall. That is the trim size and I need it changed to 11.25" x 8.75" to include the bleed. Is there a way to adjust the PDF? There are images on the current PDF that bleed off the page.
    Thanks in advance.
    Message was edited by: iniadman12

    It depends on whether the bleeds are there or not.  If they are, the 'crop' box is obviously set wrong, go Advanced > Print Production > Crop Pages which will bring it up, reduce the values in the crop box appropriately and you're done.  If the values are already set to zero the PDF has been produced without bleeds and you'll have to go to the source document and export one with bleeds.

  • Unable export crystal report XI to pdf on window server 2003 SP1

    I have a class asp function to export crystal report XI to pdf file, it is workable at winXP but when i copy it to window server 2003, it exported the file with zero length (file size is 0kb).
    when i try to open the zero length pdf file, it shows the file is already open or in use by another application.
    when i run my export function, i can see there is a new file created at the folder "C:\windows\Temp", when i try to open the tmp file, i get the message "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process", i can open the tmp file after i end the process "w3wp.exe network service", the data in the tmp file is exactly what i need to export to the pdf file.
    At the window server 2003, I have installed the Crystal Report XI developer edition,
    For the web application folder and the pdf export folder, Read, Write and Modify permission has been set for the following accounts:
    1. myServer\Administrators
    2. myServer\ASPNET
    3. myserver\IUSR_myserver
    4. myServer\IWAN_myserver
    5. Network Service
    6. System
    7. myServer\Users
    I think it is the permission problem, but how to set the right permission at the window server 2003 SP1? please advise. thanks

    Hello,
    It is a permission issue. When you export Crystal first tries to write the file to the local TEMP folder and then delete it to see if it has read/write permissions. If it fails to delete the file you need to give the TEMP folder on the WEB server permissions for your application. Check Microsofts WEB site on how to set permissions on shared folders for your ASP application.
    You may want to search in forums also, this looks familar.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Renaming a PDF file.

    In Adobe Reader X...when I rename a pdf file that is on my desktop, and upload it to a report it appears on the report with the previous name.  I want it to appear as I have renamed it.  Please help!

    Yes thank you......It is a real estate 4 page document that I need and have uploaded into my real estate listing, and that I have scanned from the file option to save on my desktop in pdf file. I then rename it by removing the last 5 zeros and pdf from the name I have previously  chosen in the printer Control Center 3. When I rename the file on my desk top it looks OK,  Then I go into the MLS real estate website and upload it after I locate it on my desktop.  It uploads fine and shows the filename at the left of the doc which is OK except the 5 zeros and pdf are there again.   I named the file ...12 Gardenville-pcd pdf.  and want it to appear that way after uploading, but it apears as 12 Gardenville-pcd pdf 00000 pdf. the way it came from the printer to desktop and before I renamed it.
    Sorry I couldn't reply sooner  Also yesterday a gentleman from Adobe Paid tech support (though I didn't have to pay) was able to take care of this problem, and I was able to successfully upload  a renamed doc, but when after I tried  to accomplish it on my own I was not able to succeed in doing so.
    Thanks,
    Joebif.

  • Fop printing returns 0 byte pdf files

    Hi,
    Spent the whole day trying to get a PDF document out of APEX using Fop, but no luck sofar. Interestingly "fop" in Dutch means: tease, fool, trick, hoax, badger, vex, swindle, hoodwink
    I've tried OC4J/Apache Fop:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/configure_printing.html#05
    I've tried Cocoon Fop:
    http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html
    Both OC4J and Cocoon work fine when trying their sample pages.
    I've setup the Apex print server parameters pointing first to the oc4j printserver and then to the cocoon printserver.
    This is as far as the documentation gets me. How do I get a document produced? Here is what I did:
    I created a form with a sql_query report, entered some query (select * from user_tables) and enabled PDF printing.
    Both OC4J and Cocoon produce a zero byte pdf document.
    I wonder if the printserver a being called at all since no activity is logged in ...\cocoon\WEB-INF\logs\cocoon.log
    How do I find out what is going on. Is Apex calling the print server at all? What logs to check, any additional info to be sent to logfiles?
    Another strange behaviour. When I turned on printing for an existing report region the print link has the following URL:
    http://ngdwsrv/pls/apex/f?p=107:2:278743463863218506:FLOW_XMLP_OUTPUT_R3825265334087776571_nlThis results in : 404 The requested URL /pls/apex/f was not found on this server.

    Hello!
    Help me, please!
    I need to print reports in PDF.
    What I did:
    1 I installed Apache Tomcat 6.0.14
    2 I installed Cocoon 2.1.10
    All works fine! http://localhost:8080/Cocoon opened OK
    3 I copied fop_post to \apache-tomcat-6.0.14\webapps\cocoon\ , now I have apache-tomcat-6.0.14\webapps\cocoon\fop_post\sitemap.xmap
    4 In apex I choose : Oracle BI Publiser - Standart Support
    print server host address 192.168.1.112
    print server port 8080
    print server script \cocoon\fop_post\
    Now I make simple report consists from 1 column from a simple table like emp table, and choose.
    Output format - PDF
    Report Layout - Default Report Layout
    Apex is English.
    I read that can be problem if I'll write use point in (example) 0.5 and everywhere I used 1.
    When I run the programm and click print button I have error message : Acrobat could not open 'a[1].pdf' because is either not a supported file type or because
    the file has been damage ......
    I saved this file and opened with text editor but there was nothing and size of this file is 0 kb.
    PLEASE, explain me where is problem and how to solve it?
    Thank you!!!

  • Acrobat will not Activate. Ever, Ever? Ever.

    STILL HAVING issues with Acrobat closing for no reason after about 8 seconds, also when converting to PDF in Word 2013 I get error statement that Acrobat is not activated. Also keep having to delete the OBEE folder every day to use CC. Ridiculous!!!!! Well known and well documented through out these forums. FIX IT ADOBE!
    I spent 2 hours on the phone with Adobe "no speak english" support and no solution.
    Im running Windows 7 with CC subscription.
    Steps I have followed from Adobe that do not work:
    First Try on support call:
    Signout of CC
    Delete OBEE
    Delete Local and LowLocal Acrobat pref folders
    Restart system
    Opn PS CC and follow steps to activate/signin
    Open Acrobat and see if it works. It does not.
    Second try on support call:
    Remove all of the CC apps
    Run CC cleaner on all apps
    Restart System
    Install all CC apps
    Open Acrobat and see if it works. It does not.
    Third try on support call:
    Delete Windows 7 user Admin account and create a new one
    Go through all the steps above from second support try
    Im thinking the only way to fix this well known and well documented problem is to start posting links to alternative PDF software solutions and maybe drop my companies 20 CC licenses and ALl of the Acrobat licenses

    "Note: The information below is based on the Classic version of Windows XP."
    I'm on a Windows 7 machine, tried the XP solution you suggested. No change, Acrobat still closes and not activating. I did not have acrobat previous to CC subription. I did have IT completely gut my PC and reloaded the entire machine today, loaded CC, installed the apps, opend PS and accepted the agreement, opend Acrobat and it closes within 8 seconds so same B.S.
    I am going on 4 months of this problem, usually Adobe can get it figured out, but after a quick search on these forums you can see its clearly a problem that has been ignored.
    And this doesnt help me convince my company that we should stay with Adobe products. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2027946/researchers-zero-day-pdf-exploit-affects-adobe-read er-11-earlier-versions.html
    If anyone else has falling into the Acrobat BLACKHOLE here are some ADOBE ACROBAT ALTERNATIVES: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2096946/5-cheaper-alternatives-to-acrobat-for-pdf-editing.h tml

  • How can I reset the xy zero point to a different spot in my PDF? Possibly via a plug-in?

    I would like to reset my zero point to aid in measuring and aligning elements in PDFs. Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop will let you do this but not Acrobat Pro. Any ideas? I also use Pitstop Pro but can't seem to find anything in there that can help other than the measure tool.

    You can't. The coordinate system defining the position of page elements is a fundamental property of the ISO PDF standard.

  • Delete leading zeros for a field on the pdf form

    Hi,
    i know it is possible to delete leading zeros via abap coding in the interface.
    But is it also possible to this directly on the pdf form - scripting or a setting?
    Thank you
    Kind regards
    Manfred

    I believe you can set this up as a field display pattern (if you use LCD 8.1 or something like that).
    Or you can script that out. In formcalc you can easily process characater by character, test if that is zero and remove it.

    The problem is, I never considered pages 0 through 99. The script works perfect for 138-140 TEST 10_WORKER.indd. It creates PDFs named:
    MyTest_138.pdf
    MyTest_139.pd
    MyTest_140.pdf
    If the document name is 098-100 TEST 10_WORKER.indd, It creates PDFs named:
    MyTest_98.pdf -  should be MyTest_098.pdf
    MyTest_99.pdf -  should be MyTest_099.pdf
    MyTest_100.pdf - This is perferct
    And of course, the double 0s, 008-010 TEST 10_WORKER.indd
    MyTest_8.pdf -  should be MyTest_008.pdf
    MyTest_9.pdf -  should be MyTest_009.pdf
    MyTest_10.pdf -  should be MyTest_010.pdf
    Why doesn't it use the first 0(s) in the name? 0 is a digit and every RegEx tester I've checked it with includes the zero.
    Any assistance with getting this script to use the leading zero if there is one would be greatly appreciated.
    Also, if there is a way to export each PDF from a multipage document which doesn't start with a number, it would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks in advance
    Danny

    The zeros aren't there because they never were there. Your loop starts at 0 and that could be a page number. To pad your page numbers to three-digit numbers, replace this line:
    myFilePath = myFolder + "/" + "MyTest_" + (my_suffix + myCounter) + ".pdf";
    with this one:
    myFilePath = myFolder + "/" + "MyTest_" + (my_suffix + pad(myCounter)) + ".pdf";
    and add the following function somewhere at the end of your script:
    function pad (n) {
        return ("00000"+n).slice(-3);

  • Leading Zeros won't display on a PDF form

    Hey, I am using Acrobat 7.0 professional on my Windows XP system. I have a PDF that was sent to me by someone known. This PDF is already fielded (meaning, I can type in my name and other relevant info in the form). However; I am trying to populate info on this PDF using an online data collection tool. Therefore, I deleted all the original fielding from the PDF and fielded it again using the naming conventions that match with the online data collection tool variables. After doing so, all other information is populating very well on the PDF but the values with leading zeros are not populating on the PDF. When I double click that field to check the properties and go to the "Options" tab, I see the value with leading zero that is being extracted from the online data collection tool; however it is not displaying it on the form. Moreover, if I try to modify any of the properties of that field; the value with leading zeros suddenly appears on the PDF Form.
    Could anyone please assist me to identify as to what is causing the values with leading zeros not to populate on the PDF form...
    Any help would be much appreciated...
    Thanks!

    Well, that was my guess. It may be that it is there, but you can't see it. There have been some issues of the information in a field not always displaying correctly. I have not experienced it, but remember such happens. You might want to search the forum. Bill

  • Exporting PDF to Print - Zero Bytes

    Hi All,
    I am trying to export my brochure design 104 pages. A4 size. It is a furniture brochure so you can imagine there are hundreds of linked files.
    Once I have selected Export PDF for Print as I usually do with my flyers and posters, I select the option I believe I need, including the output for bleed markings .etc. but the file does not seem to be exporting.
    When I locate my exported PDF in Finder (Mac) Explorer (Windows) it shows the file there but with Zero bytes as the size, I try to open the file and it says the file is empty.
    Has anyone seen this before or am I doing anything wrong?
    Does InDesign show the progess of the Export? I cannot see anything in InDesign but I'm thinking it could take some time to Export as the file must be very large.
    Any help and advise is appreciated as always
    Kind Regards
    James

    Hi Peter, thanks for your prompt response
    I am using CS6 now, is there anyway to view background taks?
    I have attached a screenshot of the error I am now receiving....

  • I spent half the morning and thus farI am trying to get Firefox to open a .pdf file but it not only downloads the file to my desktop but also dozens of zero-killabyte page images.

    I spent half the morning and thus far this afternoon working on a Firefox problem and have only managed to screw it up so bad that when I try to access a web page containing a .pdf file it not only downloads the brochure but also dozens (literally dozens!) of zero-killabyte page images to my desktop. I have tried trashing Firefox and downloading fresh versions but I still get the same results. I have tried to find and trash the Foxfire preference pane, thinking that would solve the problem, but haven't been able to locate it.

    You have Acrobat Pro on your system. It will try to open PDFs, and of course it will fail. You must uninstall it. Then, you will need a PDF reader. So install Adobe Reader. That seems quite simple, but perhaps something is wrong. If anything goes wrong with these two steps (1) uninstall Acrobat Pro (2) install Adobe Reader, then please let us know the details.

  • Smartform convert to PDF dump - divide by zero

    SAP Version 4.7 Enterprise
    hello all,
    i am trying to do somethign rather basic that is discussed in these forums many times: convert Samrtforms output to PDF. i used the suggested forms but came across a unique (i think) error. my problem is that when i run the CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF function i get a core dump with the error "divide by zero". reading the core dump i see that there appears to be a font issue in the form:

    i am trying to do somethign rather basic that is discussed in these forums many times: convert Samrtforms output to PDF. i used the suggested forms but came across a unique (i think) error. my problem is that when i run the CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF function i get a core dump with the error "divide by zero". reading the core dump i see that there appears to be a font issue in the form:
    Code: Select all
    055610   * non-proportional font
    055620   * if charwidth is not equal the default PostScript charwidth,

    055700     PERFORM PDF_APPEND_STREAM USING '0 Tw'. "#EC NOTEXT

    055790     ELSE.
    055800   *   OTF character spacing is wider than PostScript default

    055840   *   a negative value moves charpos to the RIGHT!
    needless to say this works perfectly when printing to paper. i am not using any non-stnadard fonts. the fonts are Arial with sizes of 6, 8, 10 and 12. any ideas? FYI, the code to call the functions is below. cheers,
    james
