ZFS compression(lzjb) on Oracle Database Files

Hi all,
We have just run few tests with Oracle Database files and using the lzjb compression on zfs with Solaris 10 would bring great space savings. Im looking at 2-3x fold compression ratios on Oracle files. Now, I am aware of slight CPU utilisation (2-3%) on our case, which is nothing compared to benefits.
Raises a few questions tough, are the any cave eats to know about? Why should I NOT turn compression on for Oracle files? From the Oracle Whitepaper I gather that compression is suggested turned on for Archives, but no mention for others.

All you need to do is install windows and then oracle 10g.
after the complete installation,shutdown the database.
Now overwrite your previous datafiles including control files and you are done.

Is there a way in a program unit of a form to convert an ORACLE database file into TXT format? When the file gets created, I want to use the text file in a distribution list for sending email. My code in the program unit is:

Table THE_IMO_EMAIL is a temporary table. The temporary table gets deleted everytime before records get inserted into it. There is only 1 item in the temporary table.

After the COMMIT I want to copy the contents out of the
THE_IMO_EMAIL into a TXT File.
How do I do this? What parameters do I need to use? Should I do this in another program unit?

"DATABASE FILE" what is this? an RDBMS file and you need this in ASCII format. I am lost.

Import Oracle Database File Error

Hi Experts,
I got an oracle dump file somefile.dmp today. i dont have any details regarding the dump file but the size is nearly 1.5GB.
I just thought to import that file to my existing Database in local server, the local oracle server details are
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
CORE     11.1.0.7.0     Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.1.0.7.0 - Production                                          But when i tried to import the dump file, i received the following error
IMP-00037: Character set marker unknown
IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfullyCan some one help me in this?

DataParser from a set of .cvs files to oracle database

Hello all,
This is my first post here, so I am not sure whether this is the right section of the forum, but anyway..
I need to do a parser that reads cvs files from a set of directories, create a dataset and then a database. I did this as I exported the database to Microsoft Access File. Now, my question is whether it is possible to export it to oracle database file.
I am using C# for the source code. The parser will be run almost every day.
Any help would be appreciated. I have a deadline for the project soon :)

The situation is the following. I am done with the parsing. I just have two separate classes - MdbExporter and XmlExporter that export the dataset that has been created to a .mdb file or xml one. Here is an example of the MdbExporter class:

Oracle Database backup via ESX/VMWare

We are hoping to migrate our SAP systems to Virtual machines running 64bit Linux/Oracle.
We currently use Veritas Net Backup on our HPUX boxes for all our SAP backups, but as we want to go the ESX route it would be nice to perform automated backups (and restores) at the physical server level.
What backup options are there for backing up SAP on a virtual machine?
Is there a backint connection between Oracle/SAP and Veritas Consolidated Backup?

I did this kind of compression within migration project before.
I performed index compress first and then export -> import with table compress.
One thing you should take care, delete nocompress flag from TARGET.SQL (created by program SMIGR_CREATE_DDL, program SMIGR_CREATE_DDL created pure non-compression objects for these considered non-standard tables). For table columns > 255, we should not delete this flag.
Regarding to the index compress in source system, please check the following notes:

I want to use ZFS filesystem compression on a history database with read-only tablespaces. What is the best way to get the datafiles compressed?

I have 5 history databases that total about 2.2 Terabytes. They use about 15 filesystems, but I can start with 2 that are isolated to only one database. I have asked for ZFS compression to be set on the filesystems, but since these are read-only tablespaces, I do not think any compression will happen. Can I simply offline, copy and rename the files from one filesystem to the other to make the compression happen?

just rsync the files to a compressed Zpool. do this using shadow migration, and you only loose access to the data for a few seconds.
1) make new dataset with compression
2) enable shadow migration between the new and old
3) change the database to use the new location
4) watch as data is automatically copied and compressed :-)
the the down side, you need extra space to pull the off.

VB6 source code cannot connect to Oracle database after compile to file.exe

I have a problem about VB6 connect with Oracle database. It can connect as normal when run on VB program. After compiled to file.exe and execute, it cannot connect to Oracle database. What's going on ? Please advise? Thank you.
