Zip File Creation

I have a problem with my method for making zip files:
When going throught the folder it appears to be 'skipping' files.
ZipOutputStream output;
    public void createZipFile(String fileName)throws FileNotFoundException
     output = new ZipOutputStream(new BufferedOutputStream(
          new FileOutputStream(fileName)));
    public void zip(String fileName) throws IOException {
     System.out.println("fileName: " + fileName);
     BufferedInputStream input;
     File file = new File(fileName);
     if (!file.exists())
         System.out.println("No such directory");
     File[] list = null;
     if (file.isDirectory())
         list = file.listFiles();
     else {
         byte[] buffer = new byte[512];
         int in = 0;
         System.out.println("File: " + file.getName());
         output.putNextEntry(new ZipEntry(file.getPath()));
         input = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(file));
         while (true) {
          in = input.read(buffer, 0, 512);
          if (in == -1)
              break;
          output.write(buffer, 0, in);
         output.closeEntry();
         return;
     byte[] buffer = new byte[512];
     int in = 0;
     if (list != null) {
         for (int i = 0; i < list.length; i++) {
          if (list.isDirectory()) {
          zip(list[i].getPath());
          continue;
          System.out.println("File: " + list[i].getName());
          output.putNextEntry(new ZipEntry(list[i].getPath()));
          input = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(list[i]));
          while (true) {
          in = input.read(buffer, 0, 512);
          if (in == -1)
               break;
          output.write(buffer, 0, in);
          output.closeEntry();
     } else
     return;

  • Finder zip file creation fails silently w/large archive?

    I had a large number of files I wanted to burn to DVD, but the total size was just over 5G. No problem - I'll just zip them first, I thought.. I control-clicked the folder containing the files and selected 'create archive' and after some time, a 4.2G .zip file was created. No errors, everything looked fine.
    Problem is, the archive is unreadable. When I double click it a progress bar appears for some time and then I get the message "Unable to unarchive "myfile.zip" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.)"
    Ok, next step: use command line to try it. Opened terminal window and type "unzip myfile.zip". Immediate error:
    "End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
    a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
    latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
    the last disk(s) of this archive."
    Ok, StuffIt? Control click on the archive, select "Open with...StuffIt Expander" - StuffIt crashes.
    Copied file over to linux and used command line unzip utility- same result as in the terminal window.
    Any suggestions? I'm somewhat stunned by this...

    I've been having a similar problem.
    I have an large external firewire drive where I keep my iTunes on and I will at times make an archive of the actual music folder and it has not been able to complete the task. It also seems to hang at different points where the resulting .zip file is of varying sizes so I can't pinpoint it to a specific element. I've used this method for a while now to have a backup and it usually works fine. And I also repair permissions beforehand.

  • Creating a zip file from the contents of a directory

    hi, I am having a problem as the title suggests with a zip fil creation...
    using the basic example zip.java i wished to edit it so it doesnt zip a file fro the current directory but rather a directory i inputted.
    It is able to read the first file then throws out the following error with the code below it:
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: test.jpg (The system cannot find the file specified)
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.zip.*;
    public class Zip {
       static final int BUFFER = 2048;
       public static void main (String argv[]) {
          try
             BufferedInputStream origin = null;
             FileOutputStream dest = new FileOutputStream("C:/Documents and Settings/Phil/My Documents/My Pictures/Work/test.zip");
             CheckedOutputStream checksum = new CheckedOutputStream(dest, new Adler32());
             ZipOutputStream out = new
               ZipOutputStream(new BufferedOutputStream(checksum));
             //out.setMethod(ZipOutputStream.DEFLATED);
             byte data[] = new byte[BUFFER];
             // get a list of files from current directory
             File f = new File("C:/Documents and Settings/Phil/My Documents/My Pictures/Work/");
             f.listFiles();
             String files[] = f.list();
             for (int i=0; i<files.length; i++)
                System.out.println("Adding: "+files);
    FileInputStream fi = new FileInputStream(files[i]);
    origin = new BufferedInputStream(fi, BUFFER);
    ZipEntry entry = new ZipEntry(files[i]);
    out.putNextEntry(entry);
    int count;
    while((count = origin.read(data, 0,
    BUFFER)) != -1)
    out.write(data, 0, count);
    origin.close();
    out.close();
    catch(Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    After investigation i am lead to believe this is because the method returns an array of file and directory names only but not their path and the unqualified names would have therefore be defaulted to the current working directory. Something i understand if this is the case.
    So instead i used the File.listFiles() method to return an array
    of File objects, instead of an array of Strings as shown in the snippet of the changed code below (the changed code highlighted)...but arrived at another error on the second section of highlighted code meaning i cant compile. I cant understand why this is so!
    The error is: "cannot find symbol, Symbol: Contructor ZipEntry (Java.IO.file), location: class.java.util.zip.ZipEntry"
    File f = new File("C:/Documents and Settings/Phil/My Documents/My Pictures/Work/");
             **************File g[] = f.listFiles();***************
             **************String files[] = f.list();**************
             for (int i=0; i<g.length; i++)
                System.out.println("Adding: "+g);
    FileInputStream fi = new FileInputStream(g[i]);
    origin = new BufferedInputStream(fi, BUFFER);
    **************ZipEntry entry = new ZipEntry(g[i]);************
    out.putNextEntry(entry);
    int count;
    while((count = origin.read(data, 0,
    BUFFER)) != -1)
    out.write(data, 0, count);
    origin.close();
    out.close();
    Any help and thoughts most appreciated. Thank u in advance

    I'll admit i took 1 look at that reply an thought "thats stupid that wont work"...
    then a second look an though "actually, i should work i cant believe i didnt think of that"
    Anyways i tried it and it did work
    How are the duke dollars awarded, cos u should have them ordinary_guy
    cheers!

    Your solution lies in the File.separator constant; this constant will contain the path separator that is used by the operating system. No need to hardcode one, Java already has it.
    edit: when it comes to paths by the way, I have the bad habit of always using the front slash ( / ). This will also work under Windows and has the added benefit of not needing to be escaped.

  • JAR creation failed in Eclipse. error in opening zip file

    When Exporting the project to Runnable JAR file in Eclipse, I have "JAR creation failed", with "error in opening zip file" in details and nothing else.
    I've tried running the new Eclipse environment by starting a new .metadata file. Then, I rebuilt the project - it runs as before.
    What zip file is referred to?

    I imagine it's the "Export destniation" jar/zip. Perhaps it's being
    used by a running application and is therefore locked against writing.
    Have you tried deleting it from the command line?

  • Problems creating/extracting ZIP files, anyone?

    Greetings,
    I am having some odd bugs with OSX in creating and extracting ZIP files.  I’m curious if anyone else has run across this or if anyone has any remedies to suggest.
    The issue is that when I extract a ZIP archive, the extracted files have their creation dates and modification dates changed from the original versions.  For example, I have a directory created in 2010 and all the files were created and last modified in 2010.  However, when I ZIP the directory and re-extract it, many of the file dates change.  Some files have the creation dates changed so to match the last modified date.  In other cases, both the creation date and modification date are changed to something later than both, perhaps the date the directory was ZIPed or the date the directory was extracted.  And some files don’t seem to have the dates changed.
    I have tried various options, such as terminal, and third party programs (BetterZip, Keka, Stuffit, & Archiver to name a few) and they all seem to have some variation of this behavior.  I have tried creating the Zip with one program and extracting with the other, and still this behavior persists.  Different files seem to be affected with each combination of creating and extracting programs.
    Another odd behavior was that I tried password protecting some directories with financial data, and OSX could create the ZIP file with the password, but OSX could not unzip the file with the password it created for some files.  In every case, third party program could unzip the files with the password created in the terminal command.  This seem to happen inconsistently.
    I have tried creating a dummy account and tested it in that account, with similar results.
    I’ve read the man page for the command line version of ZIP to see if there is some -option to preserve dates, but found nothing.  The typical command looks like this:
    > zip -er filename.zip  sourceDir
    > unzip filename.zip
    File types include directories, PDFs, Text docs, Quicken files.  Ive tested other directories too with other file types.  It doesn’t seem to affect every file, but seems unpredictable.  Luckily, I still have the original uncompressed version of most directories.  But I really want to archive some directories and unarchive them when needed.  The dates matter to me because they are mostly financial files and I use the dates to know what versions were used for taxes and other things.  Also, if dates change, then backup programs start replacing the good backups with files with the corrupted dates.
    I’d appreciate any suggestions or feedback.  I there some bug in the ZIP protocol?  Is there some bug in OSX file system that is corrupting the dates with the archive and unarchive process?
    Thank you for any suggestions-
    OSX 10.9.5,
    MBPro 2012

    OK, sorry did not read it correctly.  Read the first sentance and quit.
    No, Bridge is just a browser.  You can extract more than one file at a time in Win. Explorer.  You have to do them individually, but can run multiple extractions at the same time.
    There are other zip/unzip programs out there.  I know the the CS6 beta a number of users could not open it with WinZip and used alternate product just fine.

    These exceptions occur when opening JAR files (since they are renamed ZIPs). Most likely the file cannot be ffound because you have classpaths setup incorrectly

  • Failed to create zip file - did not free space

    Hi,I tried to zip the inside of my camera folder and naturally did not have enough space.1. Creation of the zip file failed.2. Shows me that there is no more room left on device, i.e. the space was not freed.3. Can not locate the zip file it tried to create (it did not appear in the same folder as "camera" and can't find it anywhere else either). Can anyone help, please, can't copy files anywhere because no space left and don't want to delete anything. Thanks in advance,Dario

    In regards to your original problem, but I can see two solutions without Link. 1, get an SD card and transfer some content over. The phone has finite space and this is the only way you can access storage from a computer without Link, so it is then only way to back up files (did I mention that is important yet?). 2, download Ghost Commander from the app world. It is a vastly more powerful file browser that can allow you to see your device storage particulars. I have none idea where a temporary ZIP file is located however, so this is not choice #1.

  • Unable to unarchive ZIP file Error - 1

    Every time I try to archive a ZIP file, i get the message "Unable to archive (Error - 1)" How can I fix this?

    I have to agree, the most likely scenario is a bad file. As I mentioned earlier, I don't think there are any Mac utilities for attempting a repair. "Repair" is somewhat vague. If a file is bad it is missing data, and likely this data is critical to the running of the file. If you could repair this file (say, on a PC) you still might end up with a corrupt movie file which might refuse to play. Even if the movie plays it might end early or something.
    Could this possibly be part of a multi-part archive set? The file extension is totally wrong for that but the "05" suggest more than one of something.
    I have also read there are some obscure utilities that do flavors of zip that can't be opened on Macs.

  • Download Helper, even with paid converter upgrade, gives "Invalid Capture File" errors and will not record audio, with "File Creation Error - Unable to rename/copy audio file" Error.

    Download Helper Screen Capture worked to capture video if the default "no audio" option is active. But, no audio. The "speakers" or "microphone" audio options are confusing....the audio to be captured is from the video, so what do you choose? With either "speakers" or "microphone" selected, the captured file has poor audio and no video. Re-capture efforts (speakers) get "Invalid capture file error" and "File Creation error- Unable to rename/copy audio file"
    The paid upgrade of "Converter" doesn't work.
    Instructive documentation - not very good.
    Suggestions - Need time delay between initiation of "Record" and starting the video to be recorded.
    Could use timer tracking of the record process.
    Are there operating system limitations? (Have Windows XP Pro)

    That is an issue for the developer of that Download Helper.

  • I can't update Fiefox since update 10.o1 or 10.02. Every time I try to I get the same message, "7 - ZIP File is missing" I don't know how or where to correct this problem. I'd really appreciate any help that corrects this problem. Thanks sovery much,

    Missing "7-Zip File"
    Hello,
    I haven't been able to update Firefox since 10.01 or 10.02 because every time I try I get the same message the "7-ZIP File" is missing. Then the update fails. I've submitted this problem to Mozilla Firefox and, got an immediate reply of " they are researching your problem".
    Well, you can tell how long that has been. Is there anything I can do, or any where I can go to get the file I need?
    Any constructive help would be very much appreciated! I'm not sure If I'll ever be able to find where this is located. But I do appreciate help just the same.

    It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
    Disable your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes installing work.
    Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 11.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
    *Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.
    Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

    Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
