Hey WD...  Y'all's got a BUG... When I access the MyClod from my laptop running XP with FireFox, I get the thousands of  "sess_*" files written to /tmp, and I get groups of messages of the form Jul 14 22:36:26 WDMyCloud REST_API[23951]: 192.168.1.101 ORION_LOG /var/www/rest-api/api/Auth/src/Auth/User/UserSecurity.php ISAUTHENTICATED [ERROR] Authentication failure for /api/2.1/rest/mediacrawler_status?_=1436938574613

Jul 14 22:40:51 WDMyCloud REST_API[23952]: 192.168.1.100 OUTPUT Alerts\Controller\Alerts GET SUCCESS written to /var/log/user.log. So the MyClod is playing nice with some computers and not others... My guess is this could be happening more than WD knows about and could be producing all manner of mysterious behavior, since not only does it only happen on some machines but it does *not* crash the MyClod - at least not right away.  The main effect is to fill /tmp and /var/log with garbage so nothing can write to them, which will probably affect some things and not others... https://www.youtube.com/embed/2Gwnmb6P-3k

  • Move /tmp and /var/log off SSD and on to HDD

    Hi guys,
I would like to move the above filesystems off my SSD boot drive and on to my HDD in order to reduce numerous small write/erase cycles.
I'm a unix dummy, so if someone can help me out with this, that would be great.
I found a link via google for using a RAM disk, but I do not want to go that route... and also didn't really get what they were doing enough to modify it to work the way I'd like.
    Thanks for any help.
    10.6.7.... Lion next month

I'm not so sure. MLC flash only has 3000 estimated erase cycles. And even a small file like a 20kb log file, if it needs to be erased, will be erased in 512KB chunks. So lots of small writes to the drive will do two things:
    1. With wear leveling, every time that 20kb file is updated or rotated, it'll be written to an unused or least used Flash cell.
    2. Eventually the original location and the "Wear leveled" cells are going to be needed as so 512KB of cells will needlessly be erased for the sake of 20KB.
/tmp isn't so bad, most of my data in there hasn't been hit in a few days.
But the things in /var/log get hit many times a day. Thats a lot of writes.
To be honest, I don't even need logging. I don't recall the last time I read a log! If there were a way to disable logging entirely during boot, I'd even do that.

*Hi Tim. Looks like I do have the developer tools but for some reason maybe not that one tool. So I downloaded your file (thank you so much for allowing me to download it and for uploading it) and put it on my desktop as you suggested. Still no luck. Does that have something to do with it?

  • Aliases to etc, tmp, and var

After using Disk Utility to restore my OS 10.4.11 installation to a different internal volume, I now have aliases for etc, tmp, and var visible in the Finder. Using Terminal command ls -a, I see these three aliases but nothing that seems to be symbolic links. Should I see three symbolic links also or instead? If so, does that mean I have aliases where I should have symbolic links? If so, should I simply delete these three aliases and create symbolic links for the corresponding directories? The system starts normally, so I suppose the aliases are doing the job of the missing links (no pun intended).

    They should be symlinks.
    ls -ld /etc /tmp /var

Notice that the first letter of the permissions field is 'l' (lowercase L), which indicates this is a Unix symbolic link.
And Alias on the other hand looks like this:
    ls -l alias

  • After restore I can see etc, tmp and var.

    I have a G5DP1.8 with 2 internal hard drives.
I cleaned one drive off, then used Apple Disk Utility's restore feature to copy the main drive to the freshly cleaned dive. After rebooting to the new drive, I can see the etc, var and tmp directories. They are no longer hidden. Theey also have a small upturned arrow in the lower left corner as if they are aliases.
How do I make them invisible to the system again?

Use the instructions in this article to hide the folders; steps 4 through 7 can also be done on your hard disk.

  • How to make etc,  tmp, and var invisible

I have the issue described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1979
The only hitch is, it is OS 10.5.8, not OS 10.4. Using Terminal, I get an error:
    "cd: OSInstall.mpkg: Not a directory"
Well, yeah! That's true. OSInstall.mpkg is not really a directory. How do I navigate to the Contents inside this package?

It is not that all files that should be hidden are made visible, so the Terminal command suggested by macjack is not the way to go. Only the three directories I mentioned have the issue. I can also use OnyX to show or hide files that should be hidden, but that won't work for these either. They have lost their hidden quality while other hidden files (mach, sbin, usr, for example) are perfectly hidden.
It seems none of you have ever encountered this issue. Maybe you have never done a restore using Disk Utility. I do lots of restores since OS 10.4 doesn't have Time Machine, and restore is the poor man's substitute. I solved this issue a couple of years ago in OS 10.4 by following the steps in the Apple article I mentioned. Those steps do not work with OS 10.5, so that's why I posted this question.
In fact, I found a method here:
    http://pinkmutant.com/articles/toovisible.html
The article was written before OS 10.5, but the method works. I hate to add an extra file to my system however small, but it seems that's the best method I can find to solve this fault in the Disk Utility restore process until Apple either gives us a Terminal command that does for OS 10.5 what the previous article offered for OS 10.4 or they fix Disk Utility so it doesn't make this problem in the first place.

  • ICal doesn't show delegation, and generates date and time error messages in /var/log/system.log

I have a problem with my iCal, when I use my caldav account, I can only see my own calendar on my MBA, on my co-workers MBP it works fine with both my account and his. My co-worker can't see other calendars than his own when he uses iCal on my laptop.
We can reproduce this problem on his computer by setting Location to Automatic rather than Amsterdam, then after deleting iCal's cache files, the caldav account and setting the Location back to Amsterdam solves the problem for him.
It does not solve the problem for me (or several other co-workers). We've been looking at this for a few weeks, and we can not find any clear pattern why certain machines have this problem and others don't.
All machines (both affected and unaffected) are running Mac OS 10.7.2 with iCal 5.0.1
I've spoken to Apple support over the phone (in the Netherlands), unfortunately, they couldn't help with this.
So far we've tried numerous location and language settings, but on affected machines nothing appears to solve the delegation problem (which we assume to be connected to the error messages iCal generates)
Starting iCal yeilds the following error messages in /var/log/system.log:

  • Apache and My SQL won't start when server starts, error in /var/log

    OS X Server 10.4.6
Everything looks OK, but when I restart the server, Apache does not restart.
The var/log/system contains the following line:
SystemStarter[965]: Apache web server (1002) did not complete successfully
    /etc/hostconfig contains the following lines:
    MYSQL=-YES-
    WEBSERVER=-YES-
What is the standard OS X boot sequence that should start it? i.e. what script gets executed during boot?
If I start by hand (Server Admin), it runs fine.
    _mike

Check /var/log/httpd/error_log after a restart, it will probably have more info about what went wrong with Apache.
Both Apache and MySQL use startupitem scripts located in /System/Library/StartupItems.
The fact that they start up fine manually, several seconds later, probably means that some prerequisite isn't quite ready when they try to start. A quick kludge that will quite probably work would be to put like a 10 second delay in their scripts with the following line at the top of the StartService section:
    sleep 10

  • Again: Can't make \var, \tmp and \etc invisible

    hello together,
there is a hint on how to make "\var, \tmp and \etc invisibles" invisible in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=676830

    Hi Martin,
I can't help a lot; my stupid Script Editor and AppleScript have also changed. AppleScript just seems to get flakier and it's more than I want deal with much. However, I'll tell you what I found out, even though it's the opposite of a solution.
My Script Editor won't let me save a POSIX file reference either. I can tell you that you can change (file "MyHDName:private:var") to (folder "MyHDName:private:var") and you won't get the error. Of course that's not what you want since it's the symbolic link and not the directory to which it points whose visibility you want to change. I now also get the same error with the command that you posted but the following produces no error for me:
tell application "System Events" to set the visible of (POSIX file "/var" as alias) to false
Of course you can't save it but you can run it. However, you can save it as a shell script that uses the osascript command:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to set the visible of (Posix file "/var" as alias) to false'
However, this is ultimately no help either because you don't have privileges as a regular user to change the properties of this symlink. Since it's not a "do shell script" command, you can't invoke administrator privileges as far as I know. You can't change the ownership or permissions of a symlink from the command line so the only thing of which I can think is to enable the root user and login as root and run the command. It seems that in order to make AppleScript secure, Apple has made it almost useless as an administrative tool. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable and less frustrated with AppleScript will know how to get administrator privileges.

  • Prroblems with vi and /var/tmp

    Hello all,
    I have the enxt problem:
    - I execute vi <file_name> and i receive the next error:
"/var/tmp/ExsXa4cE" No such file or directory
I changed the permissions to /var/tmp and /tmp
I recreate the ln of /usr/tmp
And I continue receiving the same error
    Some one can help me?
    Thanks in advanced

Hi, What is the permissions on /tmp. vi editor opens up file in a buffer which uses /tmp/.
check the persmissions on /tmp and also /tmp is a world-writeable, sticky bit directory.

Anyone notice that after the 10.4.8 update, that var, tmp, and etc are showing up on Netinstall images? This used to be a problem up to 10.4.3, but it appears to be back.
    Anyone else having this problem?

  • Merge /opt and /var filesystem.

We have Solaris 2.6 running on one of our production Servers(Sun E450).
For some reasons we need to merge /opt and /var partitions, so that we can free one slice for our use. What are the suggested methods in which this can be done with minimum downtime ? Also I would like to know the repercussions if any ?

    Hi Ernesto,
Please check the timestamp for the crash files under /var. Delete the older ones as even the OS support group may not analyze any older crash dump files.
    Or
Move these crash dump files to new location where you have enough space.

  • [IDS CS3 WIN] .tmp and .idlk files not getting cleaned up

I'm using a C# Soap client with CS3 Server on Windows. My script is opening a template file, importing a tagged file, then saving an ID document and generating a PDF file. The script closes the document before quiting, but I'm seeing a trail of .idlk and .tmp files left behind on the server.
Example: I'm starting with the following files... importTemplate.indd and importTest.txt. The script opens importTemplate.indd, imports importTest.txt and creates importTest.indd and importTest.pdf, then closes the document.
For testing purposes, these files are all located in the same location. What I see in the directory after the script has run (successfully) now includes the following:
    tes493.tmp
    ~importtemplate~uvw2ve.idlk
    ~importtest~borbth.idlk
    ~importtest~myhstu.idlk
I am closing the document with the following:
    app.documents.item(0).close(SaveOptions.no);
I could understand if the document wasn't getting closed that I would see one .idlk file, but why 3?
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

    Hi again
does the '3 days ago' actually set the time? so '1 week ago' would be valid too?Ah, was afraid you might ask that
'3 days ago' does "set the time" as you say. '1 week ago' might work, but the man pages are not particularly helpful on what works and what doesn't. The find man page refers you to the cvs man page, which says:
However, cvs currently accepts a wide variety of other date formats. They are intentionally not documented here in any detail, and future versions of cvs might not accept all of them. But that gives an example of "1 hour ago" being valid, so I tried a few variations
wacking whole directories scares me... especially since there are live directories in here that I think shouldn't be deleted... can I take this part out?Yes, you can leave out the complete second "find" command if you wish. But applications shouldn't leave files or folders lying around in /tmp or /var/tmp and expect them to still be there when they come back!
excuse my ignorance what language is this? This is the Bourne Shell or more accurately bash. You can try reading the man page, but if you're interested I think you'd find an introductory shell scripting book a lot more readable!
My weekly hasn't run since Nov 18th but the Monthy and daily both say Dec 1st!!!No problem. My weekly hasn't run since Nov 15th. It will eventually get run, after about a week of cpu time (not sleeping).
Now that the periodic scripts are managed by launchd, rather than cron, they do eventually get run. Unless you are running a busy server with hundreds of users, rotating the log files is no big deal with today's typical disk sizes.
