Move /tmp and /var/log off SSD and on to HDD

Hi guys,
I would like to move the above filesystems off my SSD boot drive and on to my HDD in order to reduce numerous small write/erase cycles.
I'm a unix dummy, so if someone can help me out with this, that would be great.
I found a link via google for using a RAM disk, but I do not want to go that route... and also didn't really get what they were doing enough to modify it to work the way I'd like.

I'm not so sure. MLC flash only has 3000 estimated erase cycles. And even a small file like a 20kb log file, if it needs to be erased, will be erased in 512KB chunks. So lots of small writes to the drive will do two things:
1. With wear leveling, every time that 20kb file is updated or rotated, it'll be written to an unused or least used Flash cell.
2. Eventually the original location and the "Wear leveled" cells are going to be needed as so 512KB of cells will needlessly be erased for the sake of 20KB.
/tmp isn't so bad, most of my data in there hasn't been hit in a few days.
But the things in /var/log get hit many times a day. Thats a lot of writes.
To be honest, I don't even need logging. I don't recall the last time I read a log! If there were a way to disable logging entirely during boot, I'd even do that.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

I wrote the following with a lot of detail, intending to give it straight to Apple... but I don't think they have an option for that. Let me know if I'm wrong. Also, excuse my numbering scheme - it was trimming out my spaces and I wanted to preserve the layout somehow. =[
This all starts with my MacBook having been on for is that, when I open my MacBook and it comes back from sleep, I see the usual black screen. It brings up the unlock dialog, but that disappears almost instantly. Neither moving the cursor nor pressing keys brings it back. However, sleeping the laptop again and then reopening it shows the dialog normally. However, after then, I've noticed the following other symptoms after that point (until restart):
1) Gmail Notifier (in the menu bar) stops updating, even when "Check now" is clicked manually. Restarting the program doesn't fix this.
2) Screensaver doesn't come on automatically or with hot corner, only when "test" is pressed in the screensaver preference.
3) Not closing applications before logging out or shutting down produces an error (after a delay of a couple minutes) about the OS not being able to close the applications. However, they all appear to be closed (no white dot, right clicking on them doesn't show "Not Responding"). At that point, opening the programs and closing them manually seems to prevent the error message for that program. Then, ... (see next item)
4) Even if all applications are closed manually beforehand, it doesn't shut down or log off. A few observations:
a) Everything but the dock goes disappears.
b) Dashboard/expose/desktop hot keys and keyboard shortcuts still work.
c) Clicking a dock item brings the menu bar back, but doesn't reactivate Finder (or show the desktop icons, consequently).

I'm having this exact same problem, except I don't use GMail Notifier. The being unable to log out, shut down, or restart issue I've had intermittently in the past; the broken screensaver is new.

My Macbook Pro hang and cannot log off in Lion 10.7.1

Ocassionally, I log off my Macbook Pro early 2008, running Lion 10.7.1. This never be a problem in SNow Leopard
But now, when I hit log out from Apple Menu, my Mac just hang on the gray screen having mouse arrow on the screen. Mouse can be moved using trackpad, but it just hang there
I have to press power button to force shut down and reboot.
Why this stupid and annoying problem occurred? Fix please

part of the reason it hangs a little may be because of the new Resume feature in Lion try quiting all applications before logging out and see if that changes anything my only other solution is my login hang/freeze fix which can be found at this link

Sounds like either the Display or Graphics chip, that will not be cheap to fix. Because it is a 2006 and getting on in years, it might be best to move whatever you want to keep over to your newer iMac using Firewire Target Disk Mode and let it rest in peace.

Session time out and automatic log off

I have been using JSC for a while but I am not JSC guru.
I want to implement automatic logoff when the session timesout. I know that I can set session time out in tomat web.xml file. but I cant understand how to check if the session time is out and logOff the user.
When user logs in, username is stored in the database, so when the user logoff the username has to be deleted from the database and he should be redirected to the login page. I want all this to be done automatically when session times out(i.e if the user is inactive for specified amount of time).
Any help is greatly appreciated. Please reply ASAP, i need to get this working by tommorow.

by commenting above line in initttab file would stop messaging, is this would have any adverse affect on the database. As its a production server, so i am really taking time to resolve it. Your suggestions are welcome. If there is no harm in commenting the above line then i would go forward to comment that line.

Sometimes my screen starts to move on my iMac. It's like it's trying to turn the page and it gets off center and the mouse doesn't work when it happens. It usually lasts about 15 seconds or so and happens often.

Sometimes the screen on my imac starts to shake like it it trying to "go to the next page". When this happens it usually freezes up for 15 seconds or so and the mouse doesn't work.

Have you tried a hard reset of the iPod to see if that helps? To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, work through each of the troubleshooting suggestions in this Apple support document as necessary.

Slow Transfer and Downloads with new SSD and Fresh OS

I have a brand new Solid State Drive and maxed out the RAM in my Mid 2010 15 inch MacBook Pro. The new hard drive made all the difference in the world. But having never done a clean install since the start, I was having issues with some of my older applications. I decided to clear the hard drive and reinstall the OS and discs for Final Cut Studio and my Adobe products. Everything runs smoothly, but only now, when I try to copy from a external drive, whether FireWire or USB it takes exponentially longer to transfer. Same goes for downloading content from a FTP server. Basically anything that is generating new files/data onto my hard drive. This wasn't the case until I re-installed the OS (Had Mavericks before and after the install).
Any idea what this issue might be?
My hard drive is a Samsung Electronics 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 512 SATA Solid State Drive MZ-7PD512BW

my thoughts were that with Trim command support disabled, when you’d reïnstalled OS X and your apps and personal files, that your SSD might have gone over 75% full, at which point SSDs’ performance start to slow down. (Without Trim command support, the SSD needs to be “told” manually to reuse space which has been freed up by deletion.) If that is the cause of your current slowdown, then you wouldn’t start noticing a difference until your SSD has run out of previously unused space; at that point, a Trim command would be run on the SSD to make available that previously used space. In the interim, I guess that you could try selecting your SSD in Disk Utility, then select the Erase tab, then press the Erase Free Space… button to see if that would work as a manual substitute for a Trim command. Alternatively, you could try creating dummy files to purposely fill up your SSD nearly to capacity, and then delete them to see if the Trim command will make available all of the space for all of the previously deleted files (i.e. not just for the deleted dummy files).

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

HT1414 I tried to do an update in the settings mode and now my ipad is frozen with a black screen with itunes app in the middle and showing to plug in the charger. Nothing is happening and tried turning off device and still nothing.

You are in recovery mode, you need to restore it through iTunes on your computer. Follow the article you linked from.
