Airport Extreme, Airdisk, and Vista - large file problem with a twist

Hi all,
I'm having a problem moving large-ish files to an external drive attached to my Airport Extreme SOMETIMES. Let me explain.
My system - Macbook Pro, 4gb ram, 10gb free HD space on macbook, running latest updates for mac and vista, external hard drive on AE is an internal WD in an enclosure w/ 25gb free (its formatted for pc, but I've used it directly connected to multiple computers, mac and pc, without fail), AE is using firmware 7.3.2, and im only allowing 802.11n. The problem occurs on the Vista side - havent checked the mac side yet.
The Good - I have bit torrents set up, using utorrent, to automatically copy files over to my airdisk once they've completed. This works flawlessly. If i connect the hard drive directly to my laptop (macbook running bootcamp w/ vista, all updates applied), large files copy over without a hitch as well.
The Bad - For the past couple weeks (could be longer, but I've just noticed it recently being a problem - is that a firmware problem clue?) If i download the files to my Vista desktop and copy them over manually, the copy just sits for a while and eventually fails with a "try again" error. If i try to copy any file over 300mb, the same error occurs.
What I've tried - well, not a lot. The first thing i did was to make sure my hard drive was error free, and worked when physically connected - it is and it did. I've read a few posts about formatting the drive for mac, but this really isnt a good option for me since all of my music is on this drive, and itunes pulls from it (which also works without a problem). I do however get the hang in itunes if i try to import large files (movies). I've also read about trying to go back to an earlier AE firmware, but the posts were outdated. I can try the mac side and see if large files move over, but again, i prefer to do this in windows vista.
this is my first post, so im sure im leaving out vital info. If anyone wants to take a stab at helping, I'd love to discuss. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Just noticed the other day that I am having the same problem. I have two Vista machines attached to TC w/ a Western Digital 500 gig USB'd. I can write to the TC (any file size) with no problem, however I cannot write larger files to my attached WD drive. I can write smaller folders of music and such, but I cannot back up larger video files. Yet, if I directly attach the drive to my laptop I can copy over the files, no problem. I could not find any setting in the Airport Utility with regards to file size limits or anything of the like. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

You can download the setup manual and software that you need.
Look on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme for the Model Number.  It's A.......  something.
Post back with the model number and the exact operating system you are running on your Mac or PC.

  • TimeCapsule (and AirPort extreme too) hangs on large file transfers

    Greetings,
I got a following problem. I had install AirPort connected to my router with copper and extend network with TimeCapsule. TimeCapsule have two USB drives attached, AirPort - one USB. When I am transferring a large file, in a magnitude 2-3Gb or multiple simultaneous transfers of smaller files to/from those USB drives, depending on which drive I am using the AirPort or TimeCapsule get crashed. For plain user it is looks like as of sudden, data transfer stops, led in a front keeps green, and I can not reconnect to the drives. If I powercycle TC or AES everything get back to normal. Are there anyone else experiencing the same issues and if yes, what would be solution ?
    Thank you.

I think we have tried almost every combination of disabling Large Send Offload, TCP offload, IP SEC Offloading, VMQ and Receive Side Scaling possible - in the various places there are - although I will be quite honest - as there are 3 places to do this
for each Server (the related physical and virtual NICs on the HV Server, and also the NIC in the VM) it is possible we may have missed an iteration...
During our testing we have noticed that the symptoms of the problem gets worse the higher the transfer speed is. For example if you transfer to the VM from a desktop with a 100Mbs NIC, there will be subtle lag and a transfer speed of say 10 or so KBs ,
if you use a device with a 1Gbs NIC, you on average achieve 50-70 KBs transfer speeds and the higher the number, the worse the GUI / Server locks up (although the transfer completes just fine).
We also tried throttling the bandwidth via the 2012 GUI - to see if that helped, but none of the changes we made seemed to work, and we did not have time to try the powershell way of doing this.
We did replace one of the VM's NIC with a legacy one as part of our testing today, and now data transfers to the VM from a PC with a 1Gbs NIC run slower at around 30-35 KBs and the are no noticeable GUI freezes, although during the large transfer
it looks like 1 in every 30-40 packets is dropped in a continual ping that runs during the transfer period.
We have done a lot of cable replacing today (out of diligence) but there seems to be no noticeable issue. We also tried and older NC380T dual port NIC we had available and used the standard driver Windows offered instead of an HP one, but the problem
was identical no matter which NIC we used.

  • Copy a small version into a larger file - problem with typing

    Hi,
I have paste a copy of a Captivat file in a 10px (each side) larger file. Now I got the problem that typing animation is not on the correct place. Take a look:
    the original:
the pasted version in the 10px larger file:
Is this a known problem? Is there a way to fix this?

    Hi there,
I would suggest that you use a screen capture utility such as Snagit to capture your Request Membership box and then insert this into your Captivate slide as an image. This will then enable you to accurately position the graphic and should address the typing problem.

  • Large file problems with an external FAT32 formatted drive (solutions???)

I have an external hard drive that was from my PC and formatted as NTFS so it was read only on my Mac. I formatted it to FAT32 so that I could read/write to it from both my Mac and PC.
Now, because it is formatted FAT32, I can only have a 4GB max file which has proved to be a pain to me. Is there not a format that satisfies both platform with unrestricted file sizes?
    Thanks in advance.

Well, the answer is: not easily.
NTFS, EXT2, and Mac HFS can all be read and written by Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, with appropriate software. You should probably settle on what you are going to use most, and use that as your preferred filesystem.
For example, if you were going to use the Mac mostly to deal with the disk, format the disk using HFS+. On Windows, buy MacDrive and install it to read/write the Mac-format disk. If you are going to use Windows most of the time, then install MacFUSE and NTFS-3g on your Mac (http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/). et cetera.
There's nothing in the way of a really good cross-platform filesystem. ZFS may eventually become that (one might hope), but that's still not quite there.

  • Large file folder with question mark is flashing on screen.

Just turned on computer for the first time and a large file folder with a question mark is flashing on the screen. I am unable to do anything and have restarted and it does the same thing.  Please help!

It does this when it can't see the operating system. You didn't give much information but I'm assuming it's a brand new mini and you aren't using any external drives for the operating system. If that's the case then yes, reinstall OS X. Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the chime, hold down the "C" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your Mac to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
If reinstallation isn't possible, or if the problem continues after reinstallation, then you need to exchange it for another, because something is keeping the operating system on the drive from being read.

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

  • Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X. Reset to factory settings and worked for 2 days then lost connection and remedied by unplugging power supply. Anyone else having problems?

Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X in less than one week. Fisrt time, reset to factory settings and fixed problem. Has occurred 2 additional times and connection re-established by unplugging AP extreme. Anyone else having these problems?  Do I have a bad router?  Thanks.

I definitely think this is a Mavericks issue.  My iMac running Mavericks is the ONLY system in the house that drops the network randomly while all other systems never lose the network.  No idea how to resolve this, but here is the workaround I'm posting:
I've had the 'network drop' issue with my Airport Extreme for the last 2 months.  It reconnects when I pull the ethernet cable and plug it back in.  I've tried downgrading the AE firmware, resetting to factory, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally threw in the towel and created a script that monitors my network connectivity and restarts my interface if it senses it has dropped:
    #!/bin/ksh
    while true
    do
      yup=`ping -c1 -t2 www.google.com|grep from`
      if [[ -n $yup ]]
         then echo "Internet is connected!"
      else
ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en0 up
            echo "Down at `date +%m%d%Y%H%M%S`">>./dropped.out
      fi
      sleep 5
    clear
    done
I know its a workaround, but its saving me the headache of constantly pulling my cable and putting it back in!
    Good luck!

  • Airport extreme(n) and airport express (b/g) problems

    hi,
i have for a few years an airport express (b/g). the airport express is connected to my cable modem.
i also have a newer airport extreme (n) which was still in the box but i want to use (as it must have a bigger range ?). in fact i want the extreme to reach my playstation 3. (the connection from ps3 to express sometimes drops as its signal is too weak)
if i also connect the airport extreme to the cable modem, it shows with apps like "airradar" (on my macs) or "wifitrak" (on my iphone) that the strenght of the airport express is higher than my airport extreme. even if i set the extreme to 5ghz. both express and extreme are placed near each other. am i doing anything wrong here ?
below devices need to be connected.
    1 macbook g4 (b)
    2 macbook pro (n)
    2 mac pro (n)
    1 wii (b)
    2 nintendo ds (b)
    1 ps3 ?
with other words i need some advise in how to set up both a airport extreme and express network on the same cable modem.
    thank, michiel

question: i below what should i do ?
    1) put a cable from my cablemodem to the airport extreme bs;
    2) put a cable the airport extreme bs to the airport express bs.
Yes on both. Your network configuration would look something like the following:
    Modem > (Ethernet) > \[WAN port] AEBSn \[LAN port] > (Ethernet) > AX
do i have to reset the modems and are there any setting i should be aware of ?
Yes, it's always a good idea to both reset both base stations and, after doing so and before configuring them, perform a complete power recycle of your network equipment.
    So in this case ...
o Power-down the modem, AEBSn, AX, & computers. (Order is not critical.)
o Reset both the AEBSn & AX. (Again, order is not critical.)
o Power-down each base station after performing a successful reset.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 10 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-up your computer(s).
o Use the AirPort Utility to reconfigure both base stations as required.

  • Airport Extreme Airdisk's REALLY SLOW all of a sudden

I have my media hard drive connected via USB to my Airport Extreme. It serves all the media for my iTunes libraries etc. It's been working flawlessly for months, but now all of a sudden, it's cripplingly slow.
I've been trying to transfer one 800mb video file all night and it keeps saying "21 hours" and only transfers a few kb every minute or two.
I've restarted my Airport Extreme, disconnected and reconnected the USB HD and restarted the ADSL modem the AE connects to the internet through. I've also tried a variety of different files.
    No difference.
Any thoughts? I know I could completely reset my AE, but if a restart won't fix it, then I doubt a reset will.

chirhodesign, any update on the situation?
i'm helping my friend overseas with this exact same problem. she just bought a new hdd and as a shared network drive via airport extreme it's EXTREMELY SLOW, maybe around 100kbps transfer rate. we're pulling our hair out trying to troubleshoot this.
does anybody have a possible solution?

  • Set up roaming with Airport Extreme N and Airport Express N

The Apple pub "Designing Airport Networks" states you can connect an AirPort Extreme Base Station or a Time Capsule using Ethernet to create a roaming network.
I need someone out there to confirm that I can create a roaming network using an Airport Extreme N and an Airport Express N. Remember the two will be connected via Ethernet. All I want to do is walk from end to end of my (very long) house and have my laptop connect to the strongest signal. However, most publications and postings here seem to always focus on installing two Extreme Base Stations (not an Extreme and an Express).

OldNGray, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes you can do that. When you connect 2 base stations via Ethernet, you can easily create a large wireless network regardless of the manufacturer or model of the base stations.

  • Can't Setup WDS with Airport Extreme "N" and Airport Extreme "G" & Express

    Hi!
I'm trying my best and have done this stuff with the last model Airport Extreme "G" models, but cannot get my new "N" model to setup WDS. I log in to the new Airport and start configuring, it gives me the option to setup WDS, but it doesn't detect the Airport Extreme "G" model nor the Airport Express I have. The only way I can get them to be recognized is to configure them all identically with the same network name, password, etc. and have each hard-wired into an ethernet plug. Sort of defeats the point of going wireless. In the new Airport Utility, how do I get it to recognize the remote base stations? In the old Tiger Airport Utility, it used to configure the other airports for you. The Leopard one doesn't seem to do that. Any help?
    Thanks in advance!
    Corey

OK-so after more than a month of having to put up with my Airport Utility popping up whenever I started my computer or came home and joined the network, I finally had the time to sit on hold with Apple and work with a Network Specialist--had to get the ticket "Escalated" first. What the problem turned out being was I set up the Extreme "N" o use WEP (Transitional Security Network) because I occasionally have friends with older PCs coming by that need old WEP instead of WPA. The net specialist helped me walk through the whole setup (from scratch) with the Extreme "N" as my main base station (like I wanted) setup using WPA/WPA2 Personal for password encryption. The older Airport Extreme "G" and the Airport Express do NOT support the WEP (TSN) mode, so they couldn't join the network properly--thus the constant error from the Extreme "N" that no WDS base stations could be found.
Hope this info helps people in the future! I haven't seen anything around that says Extreme "G" and Express don't support this newer Transitional mode. Even the ever-so-helpful Apple Tech didn't know why that new Transitional mode was invented.
    Thanks for the reply, dhanneman.

  • Setting up airport extreme card and airport extreme base station

I have an ibook G4 about 3 years old with osx10.4.10 recently installed. I have recently bought an airport extreme card and have also bought an airport extreme base station.
There seems to be a problem with the set up of the card. It does not seem to find any wireless networks at all, including the base station. The base station seems to be working as I went through setting this up with Apple phone support and we managed to do it by connecting the laptop to the base station with an ethernet cable.
I think the problem is with the card. I think I need to reinstall and set up the card again from scratch, but can't figure out how to do this -aiport utility and airport setup assistant don't seem to help here as they take you straight to the stage of setting up a base station. I seem to remember when I originally installed the card for the very first time (before attempting to set up the base station) that it did find other wireless networks, so I don't think there is a physical problem with the card.
Any suggestions on getting the card working appreciated.
    Many thanks

Hello bblairlondon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
First, verify if OS X "recognizes" the card, by using the System Profiler utility. Select the AirPort Card option under Network in the column on the left. The "Wireless Card Type" should be "AirPort Extreme (nxnnnn, nxnnnn)."
If no card appears, I suggest that you double-check your AirPort Extreme Card installation by using the following Apple Tech article: iBook G4: CIP Instructions
If the card does appear, then try the following ...
    Reset the PRAM
    o Shut down the computer.
    o Turn on the computer.
o Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
o Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    o Release the keys.

I have the new iPad. Even with airplane mode on, my battery life is extremely limited. Is there a problem with the battery? I used to have the ipad2 and had no such problem.

What is your brightness setting & how many apps are open?
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
