Animation performance with large images -- too large?

I'm working with a client who created an animation using Edge Animate, and we're having some performance problems. The HTML page itself is 3840x1080, and the animation that is causing the most grief is a series of 304 PNGs, each 2592x1080 in size, showing at 10 fps.
IE 10 is the required browser. When this animation runs, many of the frames are dropped, showing the X placeholder image instead. Additionally, there are pauses and stutters and such, presumably as the browser is trying to keep up. I note that when I go in and modify the animation() constructor to use maxFrames: 50 or so, the performance problems go away entirely. It seems like the preloading of all the frames is hitting a memory ceiling.
Question: Is it even feasible to ask the browser to do this kind of work? I'm not a JavaScript/HTML guy, and if I had my druthers, this would be done using something like C++/DirectX.
Any opinions here on optimizing, or approaching this problem differently?
Many thanks,
Dave

Welcome to the family. You're coming into the fold at a bad time, sad to say.
I'd be very interested to know more about your workflow, jc, scanner hardware, acquisition software, etc.
Right now, I'd have to say Aperture is not a tool you even want to consider but I gotta give you my opinion: your catalog shouldn't point to the originals anyway. Do your conversions to a suitable format that will get you the versatility you need without overkill and then offload those huge originals (make at least two copies of your library) for permanent storage with one offsite.
Folks around here speak highly of iView but I've never used it. Portfolio is a longtime favorite and I believe you can distribute copies of your catalog with a free Portfolio viewer (could be wrong about that). You certainly cannot do that with Aperture. Your catalog will use little JPEGs for thumbnails but you can make prints and slideshows from your more reasonably-sized assets like, say, 8 bit TIFFs at 6-14 megs.
Hey, good luck and I hope you get better advice on a wider selection of products.

  • Animated Gif with large base image & small animated part.

    Hello guys
I'm not really sure how to explain that, due to my limited English comprehansion. I will try with images.
I can easily create animated gif out of multiple layers, given each layer is identical, with small changes accuring over time.
But I yet to figure out an animated gif, that uses one large image for the base, and only small part of it is animated.
I always get the animated part working, without the large base applying across all the frames. All it does, is flashes once
the frame is reached and then moves on to being transparent, showing only the small animated part.
For example, this is a GIF made with Galaxy S4, of my friend playing with his phone, imported into PS CS6. On the Galaxy,
after I record the GIF, I can use my finder to touch, mask and freez parts I don't want to move, and leave only small, animated bit.
When I import it to PS, it shows one layer with full image, and bunch of frames with the animation part only.

Problem is, once the image is open with PS, I'm not able to export it to keep it working in the same manner. Given the Samsung's
gifs are 8 to 10mb, it's hard to edit it, to make it more size friendly.
The gif clearly works the way I describe, so there is a setting or method I don't know about.
If PS is not best tool for editing GIF, what other apps would you recommand I use for it?
Thank you for the taking the time to read
    best regards
    Monica

This has been an ongoing issue for me since I switched from Powerpoint to Keynote. Most of the animated gifs with transparent backgrounds that I used with Powerpoint are no longer transparent in Keynote. You may want to search for those earlier threads on this topic...
To summarize: I've had to open up my animated gifs in After Effects and use the Color Key effect to restore transparency, with mixed success.
    Good luck!

  • Slow Performance with large OR query

    Hi All;
I am new to this forum... so please tread lightly on me if I am asking some rather basic questions. This question has been addressed before in this forum more than a year ago (http://swforum.sun.com/jive/thread.jsp?forum=13&thread=9041). I am going to ask it again. We have a situation where we have large filters using the OR operator. The searches look like:
    & (objectclass=something) (|(attribute=this) (attribute=that) (attribute=something) .... )
We are finding that the performance between 100 attributes versus 1 attribute in a filter is significant. In order to increase performance, we have to issue the following filters in seperate searches:
    & (objectclass=something) (attribute=this)
    & (objectclass=something) (attribute=that)
    & (objectclass=something) (attribute=something)
The first search takes an average of 60 seconds, and the combination of searches in the second filter takes an average of 4 seconds. This is a large performance improvement.
We feel that this solution is not desirable because:
    1. When the server is under heavy load, this solution will not scale very well.
    2. We feel we should not have to modify our code to deal with a server deficiency
    3. This solution creates too much network traffic
    My questions:
    1. Is there a query optimizer in the server? If so, shouldn't the query optimizer take care of this?
    2. Why is there such a large performance difference between the two filters above?
    3. Is there a setting somewhere in the server (documented or undocumented) that would handle this issue? (ie average query size)
    4. Is this a known issue?
    5. Besides breaking up the filter into pieces, is there a better way to approach this type of problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul Rowe

I also have serious performance issues, and i don´t even have a large database catalog, only around 2.000 pictures, the db file itself is only 75 mb big. Done optimization - didn´t help. What i encountered is that the cpu usage of LR 1.1 goes up and STAYS up around 85% for 4-5 minutes after programm start - during that time, zooming in to an image can take 2-3 minutes! After 4-5 minutes, cpu usage drops to 0%, the background task (whatever LR does during that time!) has finished and i can work very smoothly. preview generation cannot be the problem, since it also happens when i´m working in a folder that already has all previews build, close LR, and start again instantly. LR loads and AGAIN i´ll have to wait 4-5 minutes untill cpu ussage has dropped so i can continue working with my images smoothly.
This is very annoying! I will stop using LR and go back to bridge/acr/ps, this is MUCH much faster. BUMMER!

  • Slow Performance with large library (PC)

I've been reading many posts about slow performance but didn't see anything addressing this issue:
I have some 40000 photos in my catalog and despite generating previews for a group of directories, LR still is very slow in scrolling through the pics in these directories.
When I take 2000 of these pics and import them into a new catalog - again generating previews, the scroll through the pics happens much much faster.
So is there some upper limit of recommended catalog size for acceptable performance?
Do I need to split my pics up by year? Seems counter productive, but the only way to see the pics at an acceptable speed.

  • Slow performance with large images working at 300 DPI

I'm working on creating a poster for a film. I have my workspace set up for 24" x 36" movie poster size at 300 DPI. I have an intel i5 2500k processor @ 3.3 Ghz. I have 4 gigs of RAM and I have PS set to use 2/3 that. I have a scratch disk set on a large separate drive. The program runs very slow and takes forever to save or render a resize of any image. I'm wondering if there's a way to decrease the "size" of the images (in otherwords the data so the layers arent ginormous in terms of data) but still be able to work at 300 DPI?

inDesign costs something like two thirds the price of Photoshop, so expensive for a one off job. It's sacrilege to mention it in these forums, but of you have a high end Office version installed, you might have Publisher on your system.  It would do the job easily, and is probably more intuitive to learn than inDesign.  But if your serious about it, inDesign is ten times the program, and the printer won't smile knowingly when you deliver the image file and they ask how it was created.

  • Hyperion Financial Reporting server 9.3.1 - Performance with Large batches

I have not been able to find any help yet, so hopefully someone here can help.
We have several financial reporting servers so that we can schedule reports and have users on seperate servers so that they do not interfere with each other.
The problem is that when bursted batch reports that select 100 - +1000 members from the bursting dimension run, the resources are maxing out memory and if multiple batches with the same large number of (but different members) are run at the same time, we start having failures on the services where they hang or worse the server crashes (one server crashed early this morning).
The Windows 2003 servers are Dell 2950 1x intel core 2 duo 3GHz with 8GB of RAM.
We found that if we set the java memory parms at anything higher than 1.5GB the services do not start, so all 8GB available is hardly being used by the server since the FR services (batch scheduler, print server, reports, RMI) are the only things running.
The batches are bursting the report for each member to a network folder for users to access and for archival purposes.
We may need to get Oracle involved, but if anyone here has insight I'd appreciate the assistance.

    Hi Robert
I have come across similar issues where the reports take much longer to run as part of a batch than it does when accessed direct via the workspace. Our issue was that Financial Reporting was not dropping the connection to Essbase. We were using windows os and had to add a few DWORDs to the registry:
    1. Open the registry and navigate to Local Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters
    2. Add new DWORD Value named TcpTimedWaitDelay, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 30 (this is the number of seconds that TCP/IP will hold on to a connection before it is released and made available again, the default is 120 seconds)
    3. Add new DWORD Value named MaxUserPort, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 65534 (this determines the highest port number TCP can assign when an application requests an available user port from the system, the default is 5000)
    4. Add new DWORD Value named MaxFreeTcbs, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 6250 (this determines the number of TCP control blocks (TCBs) the system creates to support active connections, the default is 2000. As each connection requires a control block, this value determines how many active connections TCP can support simultaneously. If all control blocks are used and more connection requests arrive, TCP can prematurely release connections in the TIME_WAIT state in order to free a control block for a new connection)
I think we did this to both our essbase and application server and rebooted both afterwards, it made a dramatic improvement to batch times!!
As a personal note I try not to have too many batches running at once as they can interfere with each other and it can lead to failures. Where I have done this before we tend to use windows batch (.bat) files to launch the FR batches from the command line, if time allows I run a few batches to get a reasonable estimate of the time to complete and in my .bat file I add a pause of around that amount of time in between sending the batch requrests to the scheduler. Admittedly I've not done it yet where the number of reports in a bursting batch is as many as 1000.
    Hopefully this will help
    Stuart

  • TableView performance with large number of columns

I notice that it takes awhile for table views to populate when they have a large number of columns (> 100 or so subjectively).
Running VisualVM based on CPU Samples, I see that the largest amount of time is spent here:
    javafx.scene.control.TableView.getVisibleLeafIndex() 35.3% 8,113 ms
    next is:
    javfx.scene.Parent$1.onProposedChange() 9.5% 2,193 ms
    followed by
    javafx.scene.control.Control.loadSkinClass() 5.2% 1,193 ms
I am using JavaFx 2.1 co-bundled with Java7u4. Is this to be expected, or are there some performance tuning hints I should know?
    Thanks,
    - Pat

We're actually doing some TableView performance work right now, I wonder if you could file an issue with a simple reproducible test case? I haven't seen the same data you have here in our profiles (nearly all time is spent on reapplying CSS) so I would be interested in your exact test to be able to profile it and see what is going on.

  • MII Performance with Large XML

    HI,
We are facing performance issue while parsing XML of large size of around 50MB.
Initially XMII was crashing due to "out of heap memory error". However, with some changes the problem has been removed. But
now, we are facing an issue with time taken by the Payload to execute. Its taking more than half-an-hour to execute the transaction.
The solution tried so far has decreased the time to half-an-hour. earlier it was taking more than one and half hour to process.
We have tried parallel processing by asynchronous call to the transactions
Is there any way to further reduce the time of processing?
Further, is it possible to find out which parser is used by MII internally for XML SAX or DOM Parser.
    Thanks
    Amit

    Hi Amit,
Just some tips to improve performance of BLS.
    1. Use Xpath whenever possible.
    2. Remove unnecessary repeaters performing on BLS.
    3. Check the Like to Optimizing BLS Performance.
Optimizing BLS Performance for XML Handling in SAP MII
If you are storing the data in database. just pass whole xml to query and insert data using bulk insert.

  • Apple TV slow performance with large iTunes library

We have a rather large (movies + music) iTunes library and the appleTV is performing very poorly... Are there any suggestions how to improve wake-up time, menu response time or performance overall? Will it help to put our music on a separate HDD and turn that off when we want to use the appleTV? Anything else?

Sorry to butt-in, we have a 2.6TB iTunes library. Music and Photos are kept on the AppleTV all else is streamed. We use a Lacie 4Big Quadra attached to a iMac G5 streamed via Airport Extreme.
The only delays we get are for the Lacie coming out of sleep mode (takes about 45 seconds), which sometimes results in an on-screen message of File Format not compatible (which just means "not found"). Retrying the selection starts the streaming. I expect the iTunes library streams the Movie/TV programme to the AppleTV which buffers it for delivery. This could be the delay you're experiencing, maybe 15-20 seconds before it starts to play - is this what you mean?
As our library has grown we've noticed no significant performance drop-off.
Possibly it's a network issue, have you run the network diagnostics on Apple TV ?

  • ALV performance with large number of columns

    Dear friends,
I have created an ALV grid which has approximately 225 fields in it using Classes an not REUSE fms..
After the ALV grid is first displayed if the user scrolls down to the next page it takes significant time to display the data in the next page.. The documentation says that the ALV grid only caches the data upon display (After first display of a page and before the ALV grid data is refreshed it works fine).
Is there any mechanism of caching the entire ALV grid data before/after the method set_table for_first_display is called??
Helpful answers will be appropriately rewarded..
    Cheers

  • Linux AMD64, JDK 1.5_03: slow performance with large heap

Tomcat app server running on jdk 1.4.2 on 32 bit Linux configured with mx1750m, ms1750m, runs fast. Returns 2MB of data through HttpServlet in under 30 secs.
Moving the same app server to 64 bit on jdk 1.5.03 configured with mx13000m, ms10000m, the same request for data takes 5-20 minutes. Not sure why the timing is not consistent. If the app server is configured with mx1750m, ms1750m, performance is about 60 secs or less.
I checked java settings through jstat. -d64 is the default. Why would increasing the heap cause such slow performance? Physical memory on the box = 32MB.
It looks like it's definitely java related since a perl app making a http request to the server takes under a minute to run. We moved to 64bit to get around 1.7GB limitation of 32bit Linux but now performance is unacceptable.

I Aggree, a AMD 64 with only 32 MB of memory would be a very strange beast indeed, heck, my graphics card has 4 times that, and it's not the most up-to-date.
Keep in mind that switching to 64 does not only mean bigger memory space but also bigger pointers (on the sub-java level) and probably more padding in your memory, which leads to bigger memory consumption which in turn leads to more bus traffic which slows stuff down. This might be a cause for your slowdown, but that should not usually result in a slowdown as sever as the one you noticed.
    Maybe it's also a simple question of a not-yet-completely-optimized JDK for amd64.

  • ITunes Performance With Large Libraries

I've got over 150gig of data on iTunes, and like many others, I find that iTunes is very slow. I'd just like to know exactly why this is so, and if it's anything that Apple can fix. I remember iPhoto had a similar problem some time back, and Apple released a newer iPhoto that didn't seem to care how large the library was anymore.
Mac Mini 1.42Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1gig RAM, both OS and iTunes Library on external firewire drive

My iTunes library is about 250 gigs (gosh, how did that happen?). My previous computer was a 12 inch G4 powerbook, 1.8xgHz, I think. My library is stored on an exteral USB 2.0 drive, however OS and and iTunes were on the internal boot drive. It was slow. Not unbearably, but noticeably. I switched recently to a MacBook Core 2 Duo, 2gHz, 2 gigs ram. Now, it's fine. It appears that either, a larger library requires a more muscular processor or, the latest version of iTunes does.
As to whether it's anything Apple can fix, no one here would know. Given that iTunes runs fine on current equipment, I'm guessing Apple is not going to be spending a lot of resources on making it snappier on older equipment but I'm starting to speculate which violates the TOS so I'll stop now.

  • Very Slow performance with large files

Using iTunes with my AppleTV I've been in the slow and painful process of digitizing my dvd library and when converting the LOTR (extended edition) trilogy I ran into a problem post-conversion. They play fine in Quicktime 7.3.1, I can add them to the iTunes library but when attempting to edit any information within iTunes and attempting to save iTunes freezes for several minutes before working or crashing (odds are around 50/50). If I just add the file to the library and try to play it the movie doesn't show up on the AppleTV either which is even stranger.
Output format of the movie: MP4/H.264, native 720x480 resolution, 23.97fps, 2Mbps video stream, 128k audio stream(limit of winavi).
    Output Size: 4.4GB
    Length: 4hours 24minutes
Software versions: iTunes 7.3.1, QuickTime 7.3.1
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2(current patch level as of 7/15).

Is possible than iTunes have 4 Gb folder limits. I'm trying put a little of light over the problem because iTunes Help don't said.
    Cheers

  • BPC Performance with large number of dimensions's members

    Hi,
I would like to know if there is a limitation on the number of members in one dimension. This dimension, named PROJET, is often used in expansion on our input schedule reports (to retrieve the projects which belong to the entity entered in the current view).
With approximate 2500 members in this dimension, the report takes about 4 minutes to be expansed (or even open).
We have 8 dimensions with few to 300 members. The PROJECT dimension is the biggest in terms of members's number.
Thank you in advance for your feedback !
    Helene

    Hi Helene,
With 3,000 members you should not be experiencing these problems, if your report is designed properly.
I'm running BPC 5.1 SP8 on SQL 2005, with a dimension containing 22,000 members. Client PC's are typical (XP, Excel 2007, 1 or 2 gig RAM).
Using EVDRE and this dimension expanding on the rows, most reports & input schedules can expand & refresh in the range of 10 to 30 seconds.
The faster times are when I use a row expansion memberset using dimension properties, such as Active="X". The slower times are when the memberset is hierarchy-based, such as BAS.
If you're using a dynamic template (one using EVEXP for the expansion) then you should start over using EVDRE. It will be much faster, particularly if you optimize your row expansion.
It's often a good idea to add dimension properties specifically for the purpose of optimizing the report expansion, if the dimension has thousands of members. I sometimes go as far as to add properties which mimic the hierarchy (MyLevel2, MyLevel3, etc) just for this purpose.

  • How can I create a stop animation video with single images in Premiere Pro?

Let me start off by saying I am 100% new to pretty much all Adobe software as of about 3 weeks ago. I have been doing a lot of googling these past few weeks. With that said, I will do my best to explain my question.
I am making a stop motion animated video.  I am not using several photos to create the look, but rather single photoshopped images that I have deleted the backgrounds out of. Basically the video is single charms "crawling" or flying in individually from off screen into a circle, there is a story explaining what each charm means. I started in After Effects, but had issues with audio... am I right in my understanding that you cannot preview the audio unless you use the preview feature? So my solution was playing a guessing game, rendering/exporting, importing it to Premiere Pro, taking notes and then heading back to After Effects to try to re-do the timing. Obviously this was not working too well.
Then after doing more googling and clicking around I figured out you could layer images in Premier Pro and make them move just as you would in After Effects, which is great! There are two things hanging me up...
    1. I used the wiggle effect in After Effects. For the life of me I cannot find or figure out an effect or preset similar to this in Premiere Pro. Is there such a thing? Or do I have to create rotation keyframes? (I think I'm using keyframes correctly).
    2. Making the images stop-motiony and not smooth.
My question is... any suggestions on how to re-create the wiggle effect easily in Premiere Pro? Or is there away to create the effect in After Effects and then import the image into Premiere Pro and still be able to change the position and timing?
Please help! My deadline is tomorrow by the end of the work day!
Please forgive me if these are silly questions... go easy on me, I'm soo new! Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for the reply!
I read that... but it doesn't preview the whole thing? It only previews a few seconds and then loops. I tried to figure out how to change the preview settings, but I can't seem to get it to work.
