Available space on HD - Does this seem right?

I have the 100gb HD in my MBP. I setup Boot Camp to use 32gb since I have several programs I still need on the Win side until I can upgrade all or most to the Mac side. So of the 60+/- on the Mac side I only have 8gb free space. I have only installed Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1 besides the basics. I looked through the folders on the HD and the Library folder contains 36.42 GB of info. Is that right or is there a problem? I checked the size of all the other folders and they seem reasonable, just not this one. Do I have a problem?
Thanks in advance.

You dont know my horror story
I used to hate Apple products my all business and everything on PC. Macs are only for plaeasure for me.
i git mey first powerbook last year.On march I got my new MBP. I installed everthing, updated and stuff. In the morning i got a 1GB memory, i installed it but only i have blank screen no sign of booting up. I took it to Apple store (Virgina Clarendon ) I told them the situation but I'm scaring to give my MBP to them for fix and I getting my self to ready for battle with them. They chaged my MBP with the new one, they insatlled the Ram module to new MBP after one hour new one gone mad to its just keeping restarting, after that black screen with blue and red stripes going up and down.I took it to Apple stor but i was so ****** of because the installation of the stuff taking an hour or something. In Apple store there is a lady georgeous lady offf
They changed it againg and They said we prefer not to install this ram module. That was my first relationship start with MBP. How nice start, but we learned how to communicate, right know I'm trying to not see the bad thing about it. I thing thats the best way.

  • Does This Seem Right?

I'm really dissapointed in my MBP's battery life. I had the PB G4 but due to those lines I returned it. The only problem is that my PB spoiled me for battery life.. I was able to get up to 5 hours.
I'm barely getting 3 on this thing and I have full calibrated it. I have absoluely nothing running except safari, screen is way below middle level lighting etc.
This is my info.....does it seem ok or should I be calling Apple? I've only had it for about 2 days but this is disapointing.
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5413
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1921
    Amperage (mA): -2170
    Voltage (mV): 11032
    Cycle Count: 3

Yes, it is interesting. I tested it again tonight and I still get just a bit more than 5 hours on a full battery. Maybe I am doing something different? When I conditioned the battery I charged it up fully and left it charging for 24 hours. Then, I simply unplugged the charger and ran it off the battery until it went to sleep. Then, I "rested" the battery/computer for 8 hours and charged it again for 24. That is when I ran my test. I got a bit over 5 hours - I think it was 5 hrs and 18 minutes. Tonight, from a full charge, I ran it down again and got just a bit more than 5 hrs. - something like 5hr10min.
Also, I am really not doing much wit the computer while I ran these two tests - I only updated my iPOD (downloaded the Daily Show) and am surfing the web right now. That is it. Most of the stuff I do never gets the drives moving much, so it is all display drivers and not much else except for the tiny trickle charge used to top off my 60 GIG iPOD. Also, maybe the battery will degrade and get worse....rapidly, but I doubt it. I've owned almost nothing but laptops for the past 15 years and this is the best I have seen for battery life.
I like my MBP better evey time I use it...and *detest* those awful cheapo "chicklet" function keys. How can Apple make such a GREAT computer - and I think this is THE BEST notebook ever made - and put those crappy cheap, non-aligned function keys on it? I hope someone from Apple reads these forums and listens. The MBP will down as one of the finest computers of all time if they fix a few minor flaws. And I've decided to do some software development on it and I don't waste my time anything that doesn't look like it's going to be worthwhile.

  • Verizon Online Chat sez the new 500 GB DVR is not available in Plano, TX, does this sound right?

I just got off chat with Verizon about ordering FiOS TV and 3 x DVRs. They told me the high capacity DVR is still not available in my area (Plano, TX). Is anyone in my area using the new hi-capacity DVR ???
    Thanks!

It is available in Plano because we got ours. After receiving the email that we could upgrade we went into the store and exchanged ours out.

I'm getting really slow speeds right now, not even fast enough to use my BTvision. It says I have 1.75 down, but in reality I get less than a 1Mb. Was predicted 4Mb speeds, really unimpressed. Been 9 days since I had it installed btw. Thanks.

Looks as though it should be faster, it feels the same. Speedtest shows the same downspeed as before, too.

  • Showing. I RESET. Works, but doing this every day...does not seem right. What am I doing wrong?.

Classic iPod in Dock, suddenly stops playing. Fully charged, blue play button showing. I RESET. Works, but doing this every day...does not seem right. What am I doing wrong?

No problem, sometime the iPod need a Reset to clear the overflowing cache.
So it's good to Reset once a week or after you recharge it.

  • I keep getting an error code while trying to import a cd to my itunes: Error occurred while converting the file. The disc you are attempting to use is full. removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space.  What does this mean?

I keep getting this error code while trying to import a cd to my itunes: "Error occurred while converting the file. The disc you are attempting to use is full. removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space."  What does this mean?

Well it probably means exactly what it says... How much free space is there on your hard drive where the iTunes Media folder resides? I believe there is also an obscure bug that can occur when software doesn't read the true value of the free space properly, and the workaround is, perversely, to duplicate some content so that with less actual free space the software in question perceives it as more. I've no idea if iTunes is affected by such a bug.

I have added photos from iPhoto into Photo Stream and enabled my iCloud but I can't see any uploaded photos. Does this sound right?

Enable PhotoStream in iCloud first, then add the photos to PhotoStream in iCloud. Of course, you will need PhotoStream also enabled on your other devices also in order to view them.

  • TS1292 reItunes card says "not activated correctly"... went back to stopurchased, they say it might take 24 hours. Does this sound right? where

I'm trying to REDEEM an itunes gift card.
I get a "card not activated correctly" message.
I go back to the store where purchased, I'm told card was activated, and to just wait 24 hours because Apple's networks are probably busy.
    Does this sound right??

A brief and probably non-helpful answer: I know of no way to eliminate your large amount of duplicates other than by repetitive, tedious manual effort.
*There has got to be a simpler way.*
I hope you're right, but I don't think there is a simpler way.

It's about a 2.5G file. How fast is your connection? There should be a progress bar in the App Store next to the app. You should also see a progress bar on your computer, depending on the OS.

  • DiskWarrior: "not enough contiguous space"? -What does this mean??

Having issues, cannot reboot, after software update. Grey screen + Apple comes up, but no wheel and no further booting.
I'm able to boot from the DW CD.
Hard drive capacity is 74.41GB/ available space 21.81GB.
Graph of hard drive shows 5% out of order.
I rebuilt the directory which shows NO changes to the number or contents of files and folders... BUT...
"There is not enough contiguous free space for a fail-safe replacement of the directory. It is highly recommended that you create 132 MB of contiguous free space before replacing the original directory."
So what does this mean? Contiguous free space on the hard drive or in RAM?
(The hd doesn't seem to make sense, since it shows over 21GB of available space.)
I've ordered a new 1GB RAM module which should arrive Friday, but should I install this when the computer won't even boot on its own?
Help! I'm stuck and don't know what to do next. I have no idea how to go about creating 132 MB of contiguous free space.

DW is telling you it needs 132MB of contiguous — i.e., unfragmented — hard drive space. Apparently you don't have it, because all your free hard drive space is fragmented into segments smaller than 132MB. With nearly 21GB of free space in all, that's very surprising. It suggests that the files using space on your drive must be much more fragmented than is common in OS X, which defragments most files automatically without any input from you.
Ideally, what you would do to defragment everything on your drive, including the free space, is clone that drive to an external hard drive, and then clone the external drive back onto the internal drive. The second step in that process would erase the internal drive and then write everything back to it in unfragmented form.
But to do that, you'd have to be able to start the Powerbook up from a source disk that contained a cloning utility and enabled you to use it. The simplest way of doing that would be to have an external drive divided into two partitions: one small partition with an OS and a cloning utility (and perhaps other disk utilities) installed on it, so you could start up from it, and another larger partition of a suitable size for cloning the internal drive to: i.e., about the same size as the internal drive, or at a minimum, 10% larger than the amount of space that's actually used on the internal drive. If you don't already have such an arrangement, you're in no position to create one now except by going out and buying an external Firewire hard drive.

Niku: Thanks for the quick reply, Don. Thanks also to Miriam and the intrepid b noir. I'll take your collective advice and resist the temptation to click on their suggested link. I'm also going to try to try to tell Boxee about it. I say try, because I'm still not too good at navigating around their site.
I'm also in the process of dealing with a message that allegedly came from UPS. The problem is that Earthlink said not to open it because it contained a virus. I would ordinarily have ignored such a message, but it is a fact that the package I mailed to myself in December never arrived, and the message UPS sent (I finally did open it) mentioned that it had been sent in December. Therefore, because of the December mailing and because of Mac's strength in dealing with viruses, I took a chance. That enable me to read the message, but I couldn't open the attachment that came with it. Now I waiting to see if UPS answers my message (No, I didn't supply any valuable personal information). If they don 't answer today, I'll call to see if such a person works at UPS.

Seems like Adium is taking a ton of memory ..I'm getting my other gig tomrrow so I guess its nothing to worry about but, Im just a wierdo when it comes to system process's.

I have seen safari go up to as much as 300+ MBs and iTunes hit around 200+ MBs.
That is completely normal, don't worry about it. As you can see mine is quite lower, but it will eventually rise after extended use.

  • Does this look right? (see photo)

look at the connection piece for the power charger. The two end parts (and other places) are black. Does this mean I need to go to the Apple store to get this replaced somehow?
in the past, I have experienced burning myself when I touched the charger...
it currently smells really weird. it has a smell of metal (but stronger) along with the smell of something rotting.
the computer has trouble charging. The charger itself works on my mom's Macbook2008, but not on mine. It works only about 33% of the time, and it is becoming annoying. Even when it is charging, one touch to the charger and I need to spend at least 5 min trying to get it charging again.
This is a early2011 MBP. Are there similar problems out there on other MBP's of the same type?

I would take that computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get it diagnosed just because of security, and it's dangerous to have the MagSafe in that status, more when you have problems charging the MacBook

I've been restoring a new iphone to my icloud backup and it's been taking hours. It's already been 15 hours and it keeps flashing between 30 to even 48 hours longer. I already stopped it last night and restarted but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions???

  • Available clock?  What does this mean and how to increase it?

I have been trying to find help with iDVD. I use the onestep DVD function and when it captures movie there are two clocks. In the Creating your Onestep DVD window, on the left is the captured clock (I assume this to be the amount of video captured), the right side has a avaiable clock (it started at around 20, now it is down to 9:04). What is this right side "available clock"? Will iDVD stop working after it reaches zero? How do I get it back up to 20:00, is this like used space on the harddrive used? If so how do I delete video already captured.
Any advise to help me with this? Thanks,

What is this right side "available clock"?
It's how much more video iDVD can capture AND encode to your DVD. Both take quite a bit of space.
By default, video imported during the OneStep process is deleted from your hard disk when your computer is restarted.
So restart and see if that works.
